4117 Butler St. Pittsburgh, PA 15201 is located east of the downtown Pittsburgh in the neighborhood of Lawrenceville. It is east of the 40th street bridge. The Allegheny Arsenal was at that site in those times. In 1862 there was a great explosion at the Allegheny Arsenal that killed many women who worked there. Yes mostly women worked during the war. The 4100 block of butler street during the early 1900's was a lively wonderfully rich part of Polish and Irish Immigrants. In that area even today Polish immigrants still come to that area. Growing up near there I remember the how many stores were in that area where the store owners spoke broken English. I have a lot of information about families who lived in that area. My husbands family who is Irish and polish lived there and worked in the steel mills below Butler Street. You may contact me if you have any questions.
