Obituary: "Mrs. James Clark Copeland ...
Our community was thrown into a fever of excitement last Saturday when word was brought to town that Mrs. Clark Copeland had died about 8 o’clock that morning.
Martha Copeland was born in Alleghany Co., Pa., Feb. 24, 1858, died at her home near Jennings, Kansas, January 14, 1905. She was married to J. C. Copeland February 27, 1873. She leaves a husband and seven children. Two children preceded her to that better land. They came to Kansas in 1878 and have resided in Decatur County since 1879.
Mrs. Copeland was a large fleshy woman weighing 425 pounds. She had not been feeling well for some time, but was not considered dangerous and died quite suddenly, in fact before they could get a doctor. The Echo joins with their many friends in consoling them in this their hour of affliction."
