Re: CONRAD STULTZ THE MYSTERY MAN - OF MD AND PA

Other than the Tax Lists the first reference, in Adams Co., PA, for Conrad is an ad in the Adams Sentinel, dated May 8, 1842, headlined "Pennsylvania Riflemen!" It is signed Conrad Stultz O.S. and orders members, "...to parade at the Inn of Alexander M'Grew two miles below Mumasburg on the Hometown road."

The family of Nicholas Stultz came from Carroll Co., MD and in a document (retainer agreement) found at the Adams Co. Historical Society he seeks information about his father's pension. On February 18, 1852 he engaged David McConaughy (an attorney) to, "...recover the claims to pension... Bounty lands and dues, in the right of the service of my father Conrad Stultz in the war of the Revolution - who died 12 years ago - both in Carroll Co. Maryland." We refer to his father as Conrad Stultz [The Elder].

There are a number of references to Nicholas in documents found at the Carroll Co. Historical and Genealogical Society. Two refer to his father's will and one to a auction sale of his father's property in Carroll Co., MD. A Conrad Stultz [The Younger] is also recorded in the document but no relationship is noted.

In March, 1842, Conrad [the younger] married a Matilda Leas, "...from Carroll County, MD..." Conrad's, possible brother, Grandville Stultz moved from Adams Co., PA to MD for a time after his marriage.

Nicholas's grandfather, also called Nicholas, is named in his grandfather's will who lived in Fredrick Co., MD.

Since his father and mother lived in Carroll Co., MD I must assume that Nicholas lived with them in MD. I recall a mention that Conrad [the elder] came to MD from Lancaster Co., PA. It is possible that Nicholas was born there.

I have some recollection of Conrad coming to Adams Co., PA before his father and mother. I just can't find the record.

Still the question remains, Is Conrad the son of Nicholas?

Thanks again for all your help. Jack Novicki
Hi edmorrill33 (Ed?):

I took a look at some of your old early posts and found one with the name Ed addressed to you. Hope I got it right.

Thanks so much for you efforts. After Conrad moved to Adams Co., PA and his POSSIBLE father and mother Nicholas and Catharine Stults followed him from Carroll Co., MD to Adams Co., Pa there were Stultz family members flocking around Adams Co., like flies on an old hamburger. Sadly, nothing concrete has shows up to prove that Conrad is really their son.

All the peripheral evidence makes me, in my gut, know that he is their son but I have nothing to prove it. Conrad was born in 1812 and I have not found anything in the Maryland records, as yet, to connect Conrad and Nicholas and Catherine. It is possible that he was born in Lancaster Co., Pa. Haven’t got to working there yet. The poor children list is a new one on me. Thanks for the look-up. Nicholas, Catherine and three other Stultzes are buried in the Old Lower March Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery located at the in/edge of Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA. Conrad and some family members are buried in the Chamberlains Cemetery near Cashtown in Franklin Township, Adams Co., PA. They are a good 10 miles distance from each other.

Again, thanks for your efforts. If I can help you in any way please let me know.

Regards, Jack Novicki – pajznovici@aol.com
In 1850 Conrad and Nicholas are in Hamilton Bann Twp Adams county. Given Conrad's birth of March 1812 he should show up in the tax record when he is 21 or about 1833-34.
1834 is the first time Nicholas shows up in the tax record for Hamilton Bann. He shows up all years thru 1842. Some times as Stoltz,Stults and Stulz. Conrad first shows up in 1837 as a single man and is single and in the taxes thru 1842. There are no other Stultz families in Hamilton Bann. based on the info you have and the above I would say Conrad is the son of Nicholas.
Other ineresting items. In 1840 Frederick Stoltz showed up as single. In 1836 in the poor children's list were EIsaiah 11, catherine 8 and Granville 6 Stultz. Nicholas didn't own land in Hamilton Bann but he normally had from 2 to 4 horses
Catherine married James W. Flenner 10 Apr 1851.

You may wish to contact Mrs Mary L. Clegg Schmoker of Phoenix,Az about the Stultz family. I don't know if she is still living.

My name is Deborah (Debbie) Noel (formerly Strausbaugh). A few years ago my brother Neil Strausbaugh contacted Ned Little and Sandra Davis re information on our family. He is unable to locate the information and I was hoping that someone help me trace back to the area they came from and at what point they arrived in the US (son's school project). I would love to see pictures as well. Thanks for your time.

Hi:
I looked for a daughter of Nicholas and Catharine STULTZ named Luanna without success. They did have one named Hannah who was born around the same time. I was wondering did you see the original entry or a copy of the handwritten entry or was it a transcription of the church records?

If Luanna was a transcription error and should be Hannah it would explain a lot. Luanna could have died in childhood and that is why she did not show up in any other record.
Hannah is buried beside Nicholas and Catharine STULTZ in the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania (On Line).

Thanks again, Jack Novicki
No, there was a blacksmith shop on S. Washington Street owned by members of the Culp family. There was an archeological dig on this site circa 2006 prior to the area being developed. In the 1880s, the Mundorf family became associated with this enterprise through marriage. I found an article on the dig some years back but cannot now locate it. I believe the Mundorf associated with the shop was Jacob McClellan Mundorf. He married Emma Culp. I do not now which Culp family she was from. There were several on S. Washington St. during the Civil War.

Anita C.

Prospect Hill Cemetery, York Co. - York County Archives Cemetery Update

This is also being posted on the York County board.

On September 8, 2009, I started transcribing the approximately 30,000 photographs I have for this cemetery. Since it may take me up to two years to completely transcribe all the photographs, I have decided to update the web page frequently instead of waiting until I am completely finished. I am currently planning on a weekly update, but I know there will be times where you will not see updates for maybe months at a time. It is impossible to work on this non-stop.

I have created a new page for Prospect Hill.
To view photographs -
http://usgwarchives.net/pa/york/1picts/cemeteries/prospect-h...

To view the transcription of the photographs -
http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/york/cemeteries/picdesc/pro...

About 450 photographs were previously transcribed for this cemetery. Those photographs are available here -
http://usgwarchives.net/pa/york/1picts/cemeteries/prospect-h... or if you prefer text only -
http://files.usgwarchives.net/pa/york/cemeteries/picdesc/old...

Good luck with your research!

Kathy Francis
PA USGenWeb Archives
Adams County - http://usgwarchives.net/pa/adams/
York County - http://usgwarchives.net/pa/york/

Yes, they are published transcriptions in the Maryland German Church Record series
Luanna b/ 11 Feb 1819
with Jacob and Catharina Otto as sponsors
in Mount Zion Luth/Ref Ch, near Keymar, MD
from MD German Ch Rec, Vol 16, pg 92

It is very possible that the handwriting was misread. I did think Luanna was an unusual name for that time period.

And Keymar is very close to the Adams County, PA border.
===========
www.MidMdRoots.com
Copied from my response to Sujiwan on the Peters board:

I have Jacob Peters (son of George Peters), born 1717 in Switzerland, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1732, died in Northampton Co., PA, in 1788. He married Elizabeth UNKNOWN abt 1759 and had two sons, John Ulrich Peters (1760-1842) and Henry (Heinrich) Peters (1764-1846).

John Ulrich Peters married Catarina Schlebach, and they had the following children:
Catharine (m. Christian Rice)
Susanna (m. Daniel Rice)
Barbara (m. John Rice)
Hannah (m. Peter Guise)
Heinrich/Henry (m. Nancy Mowery and Elizabeth Crum)
John (m. Susanna Group)
Maria (m. John Mowery)
Eve (m. Jacob Group)

Henry Peters married Lisabeth (you say Elisabeth Schnerr), and they had the following children:
Johannes (1787)
Maria Machtalena (1789)
Elisabeth (1791-1816) m. to Jacob Hartzell
Hanna (1792)
Henry (Heinrich)(1794)
Jacob (1796)
Maria (Polly)(1798)
Sara (1800)
Solomon (1802)
Julia (1803)
Daniel (1806)
Jacob (1807)

I also saw Sujiwan's post about my Peter Rice connection, and I too discovered the three Peters sisters married to the three Rice brothers.

There are also multiple connections between the Hartzells, the Rices, the Peterses, the Schlebachs, and other families.

This is probably the family of your Solomon Peters (son of Henry Peters, below):

I have Jacob Peters (son of George Peters), born 1717 in Switzerland, emigrated to Philadelphia in 1732, died in Northampton Co., PA, in 1788.
Thanks! Yes, I meant Miller. (I keep confusing him with another ggg grandfather in another line). Are the Gregory's in your line also? I seem to have hit a brick wall with Charlotte. One census indicates her parents were born in England but I'm not sure if this is accurate since the others say PA.
Jeremiah Culp operated a carpenter shop at 141 York Street, just east of the Lutheran church, during the Civil War, specializing in “Wallpaper, Paperhanging, Undertaking, Caskets & Coffins.” His carpenter shop was used as an operating room (the carpenter’s bench made a good operating table) during and after the battle of Gettysburg and frequently had a pile of arms and legs outside under the window. Sorry, not a blacksmithshop to my knowledge.

Just began researching and found your post. My Grandfather, Martin Luther Culp was a 16 year old Corporal in the Union Army(Warren's Independent Cavalry) and was with his father Jonas and 8 year old brother Rueben at the dedication.

Rueben later recalled meeting Lincoln afterwards and shaking his hand. Luther in later life High Constable of Gettysburg (1881-1882) moved to Escondido, Californbia and would recite the Gettysburg address at 4th of July celebrations.

We are seeking a positive link, proof, hint, or anything showing the possible relationship between Nicholas Stultz (b. 16 MAY 1785 PA/d. 16 JUL 1865 PA) m. Catharine Crumb (b. abt. 1789/d.25 SEP 1863) and their possible son Conrad W. Stultz (b. 26 MAR 1812 MD/d. 11 NOV 1894 PA) (m. -15 MAR 1842 Adams Co., PA) Matilda Leas (b. 18 OCT 1818 MD/d. 20 SEP 1885 PA).

All the information we have leads us to believe that Conrad is the son of Nicholas & Catharine. His age is OK. A child of his age is noted in the MD 1820 US Census of Nicholas's family.

He was one of the administrators of Nicholas's estate but no mention was made of their relationship. All the other children of Nicholas renounced their right of administration noting their relationship.

All other information indicates that Conrad was Nicholas and Catharine's first born son, but we have no conclusive proof.

Conrad was a "doer". He commanded in 1842 a troop of the local militia called the "Pennsylvania Rifleman", in Adams Co., Franklin Township, PA.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Jack and Peg Novicki

Re: CONRAD STULTZ THE MYSTERY MAN - OF MD AND PA

Thanks so much for the info on Luanna. I have done quite a bit of work on Granville but for some reason never thought about a possibility of Conrad being born in Lancaster. I always thought he was born in MD. Conrad was born 26 March 1812 so the 7 year gap between he and Luanna could have been when his parents were in Lancaster. Well back to work...
Regards, Jack Novicki

The only Menges in 1820 in York and Adams county are in York co. Jacob in Codorus, Jno in Paradise, Peter in W. Manchester and Peter in Dover. According to the Adams County newspaper Republican Compiler When John and Elizabeth were married by Rev. Mr. Ruthrauff she was from Straban Township. The only Menges in Straban in 1836 is Jacob Menges.I believe he is the Jacob that died 8 Feb 1837 in Menallen Twp probably in the home of one of his sons. This Jacob was 59 when he died making him born ca 1778 or about 20 when he married if He is Elizabeth's father.
Peter of West Manchester also seems to have adults of Jacob and Elizabeth's age in his home in the 1800 census if...
Fyi Leimbach is Leinbach, Linebach and Linebaugh at various times in York.FYI Ancestry.com has a family tree that says Elizabeth is the daughter of Jacob and Christina.

I didn't find much but here is what I found Catherine b. June 18 1820 of Mt.Joy Twp when buried 28 May 1894 at Christ reformed Cem. in Union Twp.
Charlotte married Solomon Miller not Peters. See 1850 Mt Pleasant census where Catherine is in Solomon Miller's home with Charlotte as his wife. They married Aug 15, 1844 as recorded by the Sentinel newspaper.
