Bless you for your willingness!
I am looking for:
Peter Ridinger 1793-1842 married Catherine Shriner. He may have been born in either York or Adams County. Know he died in Maryland and were Lutheran.
Isaiah Caskey 1803-1867 married Anna Margaret (Peggy)probably around 1820 or so. They lived in/around Cumberland in Adams County and also were Lutheran.
Isaac Caskey abut the same age as Isaiah...may have been a brother? He had a daughter Diana Anna or Deanna 1839-1915...no idea of his spouse. Diana married 1863 George Washington Sandoe.
Any info on thses people would be most helpful.
Thanks

Surnames: STORTS, STURTZ, STOTZ, STOTS, STOTTS, STEORTS, STORTZ, STAUTS
Looking for any version of STORTS, STURTZ, STORTS, STOTZ name from 1750 to 1820 in area around Gettysburg, PA or Hagerstown, MD or nearby VA. Any help appreciated. See notes on STORTS DNA PROJECT attached below.

Other possible name spellings

STEORTS. STAATS, STAUTS, STORTZ, STORTZE, STOTS, STOTZ, STOTTS, STURTZ, STEORTZ, AND MORE

PROJECT GOALS

The STORTS DNA project through Family Tree DNA has the goal of connecting the related families from Germany who were in America by the 1700s with various spellings of the name including STORTS, STURTS, STOTZ, STEORTS, STORTZE, STOTTS, STOTS and others. My ancestor was George STORTS / STEORTS / STOTS born around the Hagerstown – Gettysburg area in 1769, died 1851. in Jane Lew, Lewis Co. (W)VA. According to family notes written in 1907 George’s father was also named George (possible middle name), from Germany and a Revolutionary War soldier.

A well documented line with a possible connection was John Jacob STORTS born 1763, whose family came from Germany in 1750 with spellings of STOTZ, STURTZ, and STORTS and included Peter, his son Johannes Christian, and his grandsons Johannes George and Christian STORTS II the father of John Jacob.

Another Revolutionary Soldier was Frederick STORTS who died in 1783 or 1784 in Bedford Co. PA, now part of Fulton Co. PA. His will mentions nephew George, and nieces Charlotte and Mary, children of his brother whose name was not stated. Mary was married to Frederick’s stepson Peter Swarzwelder.

Another possible connection is John STORTS who was living in Washington Co. OH near Marietta by 1820. The various families lived mostly in PA or nearby MD or VA.

Please contact me if you are interested in participating in the DNA project, want to share information or know of a family who may be connected. The DNA test involves a simple swab sample from the cheek. It is through the direct male line so subjects for the test would have the last name of STORTS or some version of it.

I also looked in the book Early Families of Frederick County Maryland and South Central Pa but neither of these two families are listed there.

In the Adams Co Church Records of the 18th Century the record is as follows

No Coons are listed

The book states In the July Quarterly an account was given of the families migrating from Somerset and Bergen Counties, New Jersey, in 1765 and later to York (now Adams Co)Pennsylvania. The statement was then made that as many as 150 Dutch families(including a few German) from New Jersy, and doubtless a thired of them from Somerset, were included in this westward movement. A closer inspection of the preserved baptismal record of the Reformed Dutch church established by the pioneers of these families at Conewago, Pa indicates that at least 167 families were represented in that church.

Tabulated Known Conewago Families According to Male Parents

Fonteyn, (or Van Tuyn), Charles Serrell, Thomas
____________________________________________________________
March 2, 1783 Conewago, Pa Baptistms

Fontyn, Thomas and Annatie--Hoogtely--Neeltie.

The other Fonteyns listed are
Annatie, Antie, Charles, Elizabeth, Elizabeth Smock, Genny, Maria, Nelly, Saartie, Sarel, Serrel, Serrell, Wilhemus (Wilhelmis), Hoogteling,

Fontyn, Annatie, Antie, Arreantie, Catlina, HIskia, Maria, Neeltie, Sara, Scharel, Sharel, Syttie, Thomas

The book basically gives their Baptism dates.

I can scan these pages if you would like to email me at audquinn173@aol.com.

Betty,

Somehow I was not sent an email that you had asked for help with your ancestors. I just happened to check here when I was replying to another person. Unfortunately, this book is only through 1800 so it does not list your ancestors. I check for both Ridinger and Caskey. I also checked the book Early Families of Frederick Co, Maryland and South Central Pa but no listing for these surnames.

Good luck in your search,

Audrey

Thanks Audrey for your reply...keep hoping someone, somewhere, will have a tidbit of info. I suspect the Ridingers originated in York County...just a gut feeling, probably coming from Germany at some point. The Caskeys I first thought to be Irish but have since decided must also be German...primarily due to their associations with other German descendants! Keep on hoping.
