Kathy,

You might be intersted in the book, "School Days in the Wallowa's". It has lots of stories about the West Virginia families who lived in that area. I can give you information on how to get it.

If you look up Byron Miller from my family tree, James U McCrae, you can see some of the pages I posted. In addition I have pasted many pages from the book to other relatives.

My grandmother was Nina Miller -> Byron Miller, m. Annie Laura Sarrett, etc.

Linda Bauck

Am searching for any info on Lois Pinegar born about 1903 & her sister Margaret born about 1905 in Montana. Their father William Pinegar died in 1906. Their mother Marie (maiden name Hanprichs) married Ellsworth Wiley, her 3rd husband, Nov. 10, 1908 in Wallowa Co. They appear there in the 1910 census. Their half sister Helen Brahm (from their mother's 1st marriage) appears in that census under the name Pinegar which is an error. The family does not appear in the 1920 census unless Ancestry's index isn't working. Ellsworth Wiley died Aug. 8, 1923 in Wallowa Co., appears in the Oregon death records with wife Marie listed as next of kin. My interest is in the stepdaughters, don't have married names. Since the family was still in Wallowa Co. in 1923 it's possible they married there. By 1930 Marie had moved to California, & wasn't living with any family.

Elmer Levi Rucker son of Thomas Levi Rucker

An article was published today in the Everett, WA Herald about a man in Fairbanks, Alaska who found some photos of an Elmer Rucker in Wallowa County in the early 1900s. The article is below. I'm guessing there are still Ruckers in the area as Elmer and family were living there in 1930.

Here you go....

Published: Sunday, February 5, 2012
Found photos may show Everett's early pioneers
Next >>

Everett's Bethel Rucker in about 1905.

Photos courtesy Daniel Lum
This photo with the caption, "Great Granddad Elmer Rucker (on right) and Great Uncle Lee Warrock (on left) in Wildwood, California – 1905,'' was found at an estate sale by Daniel Lum, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Photos courtesy Daniel Lum
This photo with the caption, "Granddad Rucker and his freight wagons – Minam Hill – 1906,'' was found at an estate sale by Daniel Lum, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Photos courtesy Daniel Lum
This photo with the caption, "Mr. and Mrs. Slip Prir at Rucker Place in Enterprise Oregon, Hauling water during World War One – 1915,'' was found at an estate sale by Daniel Lum, of Fairbanks, Alaska.

Everett's Wyatt Rucker in about 1905.

By Julie Muhlstein, Herald Columnist
advertisement | your ad here

Daniel Lum didn't go looking for Everett history. And quite possibly, the Alaska man didn't find Everett history.

Nonetheless, he's sharing treasures he found. Lum has great hopes for old photographs that turned up in a box he brought home from an estate sale. He wants to return them to their rightful owners -- the ancestors of pioneers pictured in the photos.

Family and history matter to Lum, a 38-year-old Alaska Native of Inupiat heritage.

"I find history fascinating," said Lum, who is from Barrow in northernmost Alaska but now lives in Fairbanks. "I found the photographs amazing because of the size of the logs. I had a strong respect for those guys in the pictures."

Lum contacted The Herald a week ago because of a name he saw on three early 20th century photos that were buried in the box. The name is Rucker.

All it took was a Google search of "Rucker" for Lum to see "rucker mansion everett wa" "rucker tomb" and "everett wa."

He went to the sale a couple months ago, but didn't dig through the box until recently.

"These two little alabaster sculptures I wanted for my wife were in this box," Lum said. "I took the sculptures out, but didn't go through the box. Then we were cleaning up our garage, and I decided to look through this box. On the bottom mixed with old newspapers were three photos.

"They're magnificent," Lum said.

They certainly are. One picture, labeled "Wildwood, California 1905," has the name "Great Grandad Elmer Rucker" written on the bottom. It shows yoked teams of oxen pulling a wagon loaded with one massive log. Two men in hats stand proudly in the picture.

Another photo, of a couple on a horse-drawn wagon in treeless farm country, is labeled "Rucker Place in Enterprise, Oregon. Hauling water during World War One 1915." The third picture, "Freight Wagons Minam Hill -- 1906," shows horses pulling loaded wagons on a forested hillside. It also has "Grandad Rucker" written on it.

Each rugged scene is a testament to the intrepid farmers and loggers who settled the West. In Everett, though, the mystery of the pictures is not yet solved.

Bill Rucker, 71, is the grandson of Bethel Rucker, an early and prominent Everett pioneer. "I've never heard the name Elmer," the Everett man said last week.

"My grandfather was alive until I was 5 years old. It has only been two generations," Bill Rucker said.

The name Elmer also stumped David Dilgard, a history specialist at the Everett Public Library.

"Boy, I've never heard of one. I don't know an Elmer," Dilgard said when asked about the pictures. "I don't know what other branches of the Rucker family were back in Ohio," he said.

Before 1900, Bethel and his brother, Wyatt Rucker, came West from Ohio with their widowed mother, Jane Rucker. They went first to Tacoma, and then in 1889 to Everett. The father, Wyatt Rucker Sr., had died in Ohio.

According to Dilgard, Jane Rucker and her two bachelor sons acquired land in what is now Everett's central business district.

"Somehow, they bought all of Everett, the downtown part of it, from a guy who was here," Bill Rucker said. "That might have been Swalwell."

Snohomish was the established town in 1889. In a 1999 Herald interview, Dilgard said that Everett's two early landowners were the Ruckers and the Swalwell family. By 1892, Dilgard said, the Rucker brothers were involved in filing a plat for the main section of Everett, which was incorporated in 1893.

Today, Everett's Rucker Avenue is named for the pioneer family. The house known as the "Rucker mansion," on Everett's Laurel Drive, was built in 1905. Bethel Rucker lived there as a newlywed with his bride, his elderly mother and his brother.

After Jane Rucker died in 1907, her sons had a massive pyramid-shaped tomb built at Everett's Evergreen Cemetery. The private mausoleum holds the remains of Jane Rucker, her husband, whose body was moved from Ohio, and other family members.

Any connections between the Everett family and Elmer Rucker, the giant log, the oxen or horse carts are unknown.

Even without a clue about Elmer Rucker, Dilgard is heartened by the efforts of a man in Alaska.

"That's just great that he would do this," Dilgard said. "It's such a beautiful gesture, for somebody to go that far."

Lum is determined to find the right Ruckers.

"I don't know who the Ruckers are," Lum said. "Grandchildren should have these pictures."

Julie Muhlstein: 425-339-3460, muhlstein@heraldnet.com.

There is a WWI draft registration card dated 5 June 1917 for a Frank BALLARD who gave his address as Wallowa (city), Oregon. He was born 25 September 1896 in Dry Creek, West Virginia. He was single and worked for the Oregon-Washington Railroad and Navigation Company. (He seems a little old to be graduating from high school, but maybe men didn't go to school continuously then, like they do today.)

I also see an Oregon Death Index listing for Frank BALLARD, who died in Wallowa County on 4 May 1918. Findagrave.com tells of a Frank BALLARD buried in the Wallowa cemetery with the dates 1894 to 6 May 1918. The findagrave record

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=ba...;

also shows his death certificate which says the dead man was the asst. depot agent for the OWRRN, that he was born in Dry Creek, WV, his father was A.B. BALLARD, his mother was Nancy WILLS, and he was age 24 years, 8 months and 2 days old at his death on 4 May 1918, and he was buried on 6 May. The informant was A.B. BALLARD (presumably his father) of Grossman, Oregon.

The 1920 census of Wallowa county shows Andrew B. BALLARD and his wife Nancy, both born in WV.

It's hard to imagine another Frank BALLARD in Wallowa about this age.

The cemetery just east of Joseph is the Prairie Creek cemetery.

"Oregon Burial Site Guide", page 866, says of Pine Creek cemetery in Wallowa County:
Township 2 north, Range 46 east, section 27.
"The burials of father and son are located along Pine Creek Road on the west side of Pine Creek about 3 miles northwest of Zumwalt at the crow flies or likewise 3 miles southeast of Greenwood Butte as the crow files. Thomas Maynard, died 6 February 1886 and son Thomas J. Maynard, died 7 April 1887, are buried here. Rebecca Jane Maynard, the wife and mother, died 20 December 1891, is buried in Prairie Creek Cemetery."

I don't actually see it on this map, but my best guess is that is the area they mean:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Greenwood+Butte,+OR&hl=en&...

I am related to William Marks who married Francis Caroline Leasy in Lagrande, OR 1862 (ggrandparents). Really interested in making contact with a member of this family or someone in connection or knows about this reunion and exchange information. They may live in Portland, OR as this is where the original information came from.
I have covered, Polk Co, Union Co, Benton Co, Linn Co, Marion Co, and Multnomah Co for someone who is aware of this past reunion and possibilities of future reunions.
Thanks, joyce
Thank you for looking. There may have been a family bible at one time, or my grandmother got Isabella's death date from James and Isabella's son Joseph Edwin Lord. I found there was a probate case in Wallowa County for James Newton Lord, but the Clerk could only locate the recordings in a ledger and not the actual case file documents. I may have to plan a trip to go there in person and see if it can be located.

I truly appreciate your efforts.

Hello...
I am writing you in regards to a school picture posted on the Wallowa County site. It is the Maxville School. Could someone verify this was taken in 1927? I believe my mother and her sister are in the picture as they lived in Maxville from July of 1926 to May/June of 1927 and attended school there. Their father worked for Bowman-Hicks Lumber. Their parents both died within 5 months of each other. The mother in childbirth, the father in a railroad accident. The youngest children were taken to an orphanage in Portland. Mother was 10 at the time.
Their names are in the list of Surnames -School list. The mother was buried at Promise cemetery. Who could I contact that can tell me about the school list names and whether the records would give any genealogical information, such as...parents names/dates of birth/last school attended.
The family surname was Clayborn. Their brother Willie married an Olivia Birchfield and Floy/Flossie, mother's sister married a man named Prince. They both were later divorced.
My mother had pictures of a Sunday school class taught by a "Mr.. Slaughter, who also helped the family after the parents deaths. I have tried for years to piece this family together and learn about the parents deaths and details about the disposition of the family after the deaths. I located a cousin in Wallowa, in 1956, Herschel Jones and his wife Fay, who were able to give us some information.
I am looking to find someone in the area that could possible do some research, both in county probate records and the newspaper for anything that might have appeared regarding this family and the tragic way they died.
Thank you for any help you could give me.
Sincerely
BJ Hainz

great - I've documented all the 1900 through 1930 Promise census' - amazing how these families (with little exception) either were related before leaving West Virginia - - or married into the families once they were in the Promise country.

Be glad to share any stuff I have - - if you have any specific questions, or stuck on stuff..

My great grandparents are George Washington Carper and Delilah Phipps - coming west orignally around 1890 - their youngest son, Walter Ashley Carper is my grandfather - Lula Barton my grandmother - she and her parents and grandmother came about 1905.

Kathy

Yes, I am researching Millers, Thompsons, & Combs families. All of them came from Raleigh County, WV in the mid to late 1890's.

Miller family:
1. Thomas Chester & Candace (Combs) Miller were my g-g grandparents.
2. Byron & Anna Laurie (Sarrett) Miller - brother of Thomas & niece of Candace Combs.
3. Benjamin & Abigail (Miller) Hawley - sister to Thomas & Byron.
4. William & Lucretia (Miller) Combs - Lucretia is a sister of Thomas & Byron, William is a brother of Candace.

Thompson family:
1. Robert Henry & Louisa (Webb) Thompson - my g-g grandparents (in WV when 1900 census was taken, but in Promise area by 1901).
2. Perry & Julia (Scarbrough) Thompson - brother of Robert.
3. Albert & Jeanette (Thompson) Daniel - sister of Robert & Perry.

There are other extended family as well. If you are researching any of these families, I would love to hear from you.

Stacy Eaves

It's been six months since your posting, hopefully someone in Wallowa County sent you the needed information.

The Bureau of Land Management: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/Logon/Logon_Form.asp
has land patent records for land issued under the Homestead Act.

It shows James N. Lord obtained 128.668 acres of land on March 5, 1896. The land was located in Wallowa County, Township 2-N(orth), Range 46-E(ast), Section 3. One part was located in the West half of the South West quarter. Another was in the SW part of the NW Quarter. The third piece was located in the NW part of the NW Corner. Putting them altogether would constitute the land area.

The BLM records also show the Heirs of James N. Lord, obtained 160 acres of land on 6/28/1901. This land was located in a different location. Using the method shown below. Their land was near the historical town of Eureka.

Finding the location of the land:
Go to: http://www.esg.montana.edu/gl/trs-data.html
Enter Oregon State, the township, range and section number from above. Submit.

The new window shows location information for nearby places. Note the Dry Salmon Creek mouth at 1419 meters; Haskin Butte, 1753 meters; the town of Lewis, Oregon is 3140 meters away. Once you've looked this over, find and click on "Switch to TerraServer"

Once you get to the map(Aerial), click on the largest blue box for size above the top left corner. Then click on Topo Map, above the top right corner.

This topo map is divided by red squares, these are Sections. A Section is 640 acres in size, length about one mile. You'll see Lewis, OR, about center. Now, go to squares from Lewis to the right. There is a "Creek" written in blue in that square. Left click on Creek with your mouse. Then in the next window, do it again.

Now in the center of that square is a red colored "3". That is Section 3 where his land was located. You can see Haskin Butte to the north and west. Clicking on "South" (bottom center) will show Salmon Creek.

Now, in this red square, divide it mentally into quarters. For his land, as identified:
1. One part was located in the West half of the South West quarter. On this square, the bottom left corner would be the South West Quarter, so he owned the left half of the corner.
2. Another was in the SW part of the NW Quarter. So this land was in the top left corner, the bottom portion of it.
3. The third piece was located in the NW part of the NW Corner. This land was in the top left corner, the top left portion. So, basically, his land was the western part of this Section.

I would look to Lewis, Oregon, for information on his death and burial place. In that period of time, it was still not unusual to find persons buried on their property. Since his heirs attempted to keep the land, that may be true. Or, he could have been buried in/around Lewis. Isabella, if died in 1889, she may or may not have been buried in the same location.

Lewis "Had" a post office, but that is historical records. There doesn't appear to be much, if any, populated area at this time.

The 1900 Census finds
Joseph Lord, born Sep 1877; William Lord, born May 1879, both living in Imnaha Wallowa Co, OR. Are these the "Heirs?" By 1910, they are still in the county, also with family members living in Imnaha and Pine Creek, Oregon.

This region is pretty sparse in population. This makes the research harder.

The Oregon State Archives are not JUST State archives, they are of every county in the state.
Wallowa County Death Records at the state archives, no help here:
http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpwallowa/death.html

Probate records...a potential here:
http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpwallowa/proest.html
also: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpwallowa/procase.html

Coroner Inquest Records at the County Clerks Vault:
http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cpwallowa/coroner.html

Other records:
http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cphome.html

Based on a couple of things, I doubt you will find an obituary.
--In that period of time, true obituaries were written by reporters on the rich/famous/imfamous or victims of accident or crime. Funeral homes published Death Notices, usually more of an advertisement than an obituary.
--Second, "if" he died on/near his land, it was of "considerable" distance from LaGrande. People, even today, do not want to pay for an obituary in a newspaper where no one would have known the deceased. Anyone that would have known him in the area, would have known he had died.
The LaGrande Observer began publishing in 1896.
--The Oregon State Library has microfilm copies of a number of newspapers; but none in the area needed.
http://www.oregon.gov/OSL/GRES/GenealogyResources.pdf?ga=t

The holdings of the Wallowa County Public Library System did not indicate any newspaper microfilms in the collection.

A 1999 published book, Genealogy of the Lord Family: which removed from Colchester, Conn, identified James Newton Lord, married Elizabeth "Rhinehart". He is a stock raiser in Oregon, living there (as is supposed) in 1879. The date of the other book identified was published 20 years before his death (1879).

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA

Hi,
An Isabella Lord b. 1858 was mentioned in the "Genealogy of Benj. Cleveland of Canterbury, Ct.", Horace Gillette Cleveland, Chicago, 1879, Volume 106, p.220. Source: American Genealogical-Biographical Index.

A James Newton Lord b. 1837, Illinois, stock raiser in Oregon was mentioned in the same book Volume 106, p. 222.

You can request this book from your local library and ask them to do an inter-library transfer to your local library.

I couldn't find where they died either. Vital records weren't required in Oregon that early and they don't appear in the Oregon Historical Records database.

I'd contact the Wallowa County Court House or local government and see if they have any of the records that go back that far. In our local county, the early death records are kept in our local court house.

I don't think you'll find them in Oregon Archives because the death records start at 1903.

You can also contact your local library and ask for the inter-library loan of the La Grande Observer, Union and Wallowa Counties' Newspaper and then ask for the microflm reels that cover their death dates.
It looks like to me, according to the listings on Findagrave, that Elizabeth (1858-1945), Thomas (1885-1971) and Herbert (1887-1962) where buried at the Enterprise Cemetery, in Enterprise, Oregon. They are not pictures of the headstones but you can request them on Findagrave. Good luck.

The following is bits and pieces of full articles that have been sent to us from:
The Oregonian-newspaper 5 May 1895 page 3
and the
History of Union and Wallowa Counties 1902 book pages 580-581.
1st is John Fleming he was born in Perry County, Illinois July 1857. He married a Elizabeth Gwillin on 23 December 1884 in a unknown place. They had the following children:
Thomas W., Hebert L..,Homer R., and Harriet E.,
John was killed by a John Baslm in Enterprise over a cow on 29 April 1895. His remains rest in the oddfellows and Mason's cemetery in Joseph.

We would like to find out if there is a headstone located there for John Fleming that we could request a photo of. We would like to find headstones for the rest of the family but have no idea when they died or where they were buried.

Re: Promise, Wallowa County

Interesting question...also a very difficult question.

First, your posting identifies no names. WHO are you seeking to find in this area that arrived by train from 1890 to 1910? If this is one family, then you MUST identify WHO exactly you seek in order to find WHEN exactly they first arrived. The WHEN is so very important, an arrival date also strongly dictates what route they may have taken from initial departure to arrival. Also, there is a consideration on what route THEY may have taken to visit other family first. As example, did they travel from West Virginia to Pennsylvania to pick up parents? etc.

Looking over your other postings, I find:
Benjamin Pleasant Hawley from West Virginia, in Promise, Wallowa Co, Oregon in 1900. I suspect this is the family you seek? Some factors on the family. I often wonder why after so many years in one place, such as the Hawley family, after having so many children, that they suddenly moved from West Virginia to a wilderness area of Promise, Oregon.

Now, the wide gap in potential years, 1890 to 1910. This gap greatly influences the potential routes they may have taken due to the basic availability of train routes. Even ONE year could influence the routes taken. Even in the SAME year routes changed. If they traveled in July, there may have been more trains on more routes than in January, due to heavy snows in the passes. Even today, Amtrak changes their routes, sometimes on a yearly or even seasonal basis.

Other factors: The completion of railroad lines to various cities. IF they went to Promise, OR, they probably didn't travel by train all the way there. They may have traveled to the closest hub, perhaps Spokane in Washington or Boise in Idaho, perhaps down to Clarkston, WA/Lewiston, ID, THEN by wagon.

I looked at the two links posted by the other. Neither had any information relevant to your research.

Some Oregon Rail History:
http://www.pnwc-nrhs.org/oregon-rr-history.html

"IF" this Ben Hawley is who you are researching, it appears he married Abigail Abby Miller in 1896, in West Virginia, but then I also see the marriage as being in 1869(numbers reversed on one of the records?). The 1900 Census finds them in Grouse and Promise Precincts of Wallowa Co, OR. The youngest child was born in March 1896 in West Virginia (Erie T). So, it appears they moved sometime between that birth and the 1900 census.

So, to find out what route they took has MANY factors and will take a lot of work. First to find out exactly when they left West Virginia, who arrived and when. Then attempting to identify what trains were actually arriving in what nearby location.

The Bureau of Land Management http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/
has a database of land obtained under the Homestead Act:
http://www.legendsofamerica.com/AH-Homestead.html
The BLM shows Benjamin P. Hawley obtained 160 acres of land on 2/28/1906 in Wallowa County.
First click on "Search Land Patents" (background is green), then enter your zipcode. Enter "Oregon" and "Hawley". Clicking on his name will give you more info on the land. Under the tab of Legal Land Description, it is shown as being in Township 4-N(north), Range 42-E(east), Sections 23 and 26. If you don't know where this land was located, repost and I'll give you instructions.

Ron Bestrom

Ole (Nordaune) Johnson was my Grandfather, married to Anna who came to this country in 1901 from Norway. They went to Minnesota when arriving, then to Nevada, then Wallowa County. There was an Ole Johnson in the La Grande area, which is now Union County, could be your relatives.
