I am researching the family of Sylvester Bell Elder (1847 - 1921) and Rebecca Freed (1848 - 1909). The emigrated from Ohio to Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon just prior to 1900. They had ten children together.

One of the children was Eli Orville Elder born 18 June 1868 in Van Buren, Ohio and died 08 November 1947 in Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon. He married Mary Arabell Nicely on 07 April 1895. They had seven children together.

I am trying to locate Eli Orville Elder's burial location. So far I have had no luck and he is apparently not buried in the town's only cemetary.

Thank you,

Jacqueline

Hi Jacqueline:

The family lived in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co., Idaho for many years, which is where Mary Arabell passed away June 12, 1943. Is there a possibility that she is buried in ID and so was he? (They are listed there on the 1920 & 1930 census and in directories thru the 30's and '40's.)

There are several volunteers for Kootenai Co., at Raogk:
http://www.raogk.org/idaho2.htm

Another option is to order his death certificate from the archives:
Oregon State Archives
800 Summer St NE
Salem, OR 97310
503-373-0701 ext. 1
Fax: 503-378-4118
reference.archives@state.or.us

You can send an email to the above address for additional information.

I hope this helps.

Pat,
I read your previous postings and see much of Stephen's family were in this area, and some had connections to Walla Walla.

In a previous answer to your postings, Laura Nelson gave you a good website for posting enough information. If you have more information for this search you need to post it. Don't ask for "any information about", without giving what you may have already obtained. I learned more about the family from your other postings.

I found the Walla Walla hospital information and then read your other postings.

I found Stephen married Mary Elizabeth Huested March on 25 March 1879 in Chico, Butte County, CA. The 1880 Census enumerated June 1880, for Kimshew, Butte Co, has Stephen March born in New Brunswick, age 23, identified as being single. This "could" be an enumerator mistake, or the person providing the information...OR, by that time he and Mary had separated? Was "Maude" born near this period of time or later? Or, as possible, the marriage date could be wrong in the records.

He died March 6, 1900, just before the 1900 Census. But, his wife and child can't be found in the census.

I HIGHLY SERIOUSLY doubt the Elizabeth March, death 13 June 1948 in Union County is the correct person. Another wild goose hit by the shotgun. This person wasn't fully identified by name, i.e. MARY Elizabeth March. If Mary Elizabeth March's husband died in 1900, she "possibly" remarried. The death record had NO identifiers such as date of birth. The 1930 Census showed an Elizabeth J. March in Union County, born 1874. This person was married to Harvey A.

Now, if you have more information... Do you have the DOB for Mary E. Huestad? Do you have their marriage certificate, if so, any DOB, or Place of Birth for Mary? Where was Mary when Stephen died? Were they still married at the time, do you know their marital status? Do you have any information on Maude, Date of Birth would be great. Did Maude get married? Any information on her?

The REASON for asking about Mary and Maude is to identify if Stephen was in a family unit with them, thus, he "might" have been buried where they lived.
Laura, I was happy to hear from you again. Thanks for the tip about checking the Walla Walla newspapers for an obit. I'd like to know if he and Mary Elizabeth were still together. The hospital information said he was married but we don't know if it was still. Mary. Maude died here in Butte County and Stephen's brother, Edwin, gave the death information. She had only recently come back here from Oregon. It's a mystery and I'm really curious to know what happened to them.
Pat

Thank you for the quick answer to my query. The questions you raised are exactly the ones I'm trying to find answers for. Stephen does show as "single' in the 1880 census but I have the copy of the marriage certificate in 1879. A brother, who also came to Butte County,California, also identified himself as single but was married. I have no idea why they would have done that. Stephen and Mary Elizabeth's daughter,Maude, was born here in California in 1884 according to her death certificate. Any way, I'll keep looking and I thank you for your suggestions.
Pat

Hi Pat:

You might want to try Washington State for his obituary as the Walla Walla newspaper covered many of the happenings and deaths in Eastern Oregon.
Send an email and they will reply within 2 weeks. Be sure to include his place and date of death.
http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx

I know that you have the information on Maude, including her death certificate and place of burial, so I am guessing that the only info you are seeking in this post is on Stephen.

I hope this helps!
Laura

I'm looking for information about this great uncle of my husband. He was born in England and died in the Walla Walla Hopital in Washington but his residence is listed as Oregon. He was married to Mary Elizabeth Huested and had one daughter, Maude. I would be interested in any information, especially burial site or obituary. Thank you.

Re: Umatilla Indian Reservation - Question

Hello Beth:

I'm afraid just because Samuel Neil and Mary Box were living on the Indian Reservation doesn't prove much of anything. Samuel was a farmer and may or may not have owned the land he was farming. I don't think the Reservation kept the occupants strictly to Indians. In the 1910 census they were still living in Umatilla Co., although in a different precinct, and Samuel was then a gold miner.

Couldn't tell if you are trying to prove Native American descent or not, but you will have to do more research on the subject. Perhaps find obits might help?

Gloria

This is the only person in the 1880 Oregon census that fits the birth description, but the husband is listed as a laborer. They divorced in 1890 in Umatilla Co., which shows up on this website:

Oregon State Archives Index Search
http://genealogy.state.or.us/

Have you tried for a marriage record between Amanda and Essex Bowen?
The Oregon Death Index shows
Elizabeth M. Edmonson died "08 0 1945". The 0 in the center is O for October.

I find a Gene Boley GenBol@charter.net having a family tree with information on Lucille Marie Edmondson. She was born 23 Dec 1898 in Oregon. She married Eston J. Boley (born 18 April 1899) on 20 April 1919. They had three daughters:
Kathryn Royene Boley, born 20 June 1920, died 10 Dec 1959
---Married William Rhodes 2 Dec 1939.
---Married Harold Gerking 1947.
Mary Louise Boley, born 23 May 1922
---Married William Mallon, 2 children
Dorothy Jeanne Boley, born 4 April 1929
---Married onald Embysk.
--Gene has Lucille death in Dec 1983. The Oregon Death Index shows 18 Dec 1993.

The Walla Walla Union Bulletin, March 6, 1966:
Mrs. Eston J. (Lucile) Boley was named woman of the year by the Auxiliary March 1. She holds her membership through her daughter, Mary Wallen, a World War II Army Nurse.

I often find Umatilla County residents having obits in the Walla Walla Union Bulletin. You could try to obtain them via:
The Washington State Library has a free research service, the ask-a-librarian program, where they will look for information in the archives, in this case the newspaper microfilm for an event, such as an obituary. They will look up to an hour and send you the results. Contact them at: http://www.secstate.wa.gov/library/ask.aspx . Depending on the amount of requests, it could take up to a couple of weeks.

Ron Bestrom

Thank you very much. Mystery solved. George Washington Moore is the man in the photo. The 1880 census you posted is definitely the correct one for Amanda and her husband. George Moore was a neighbor of Amanda in Lost Valley in 1870. Everything else seems to add up too. That is except for the cancer doctor dying of cancer stuff my Grandfather told me. I'm not sure how I am going to break it to him. He has been telling that story for years.

Thank you for responding. I'm not sure it will help, but this what I have.
In the 1870 census Amanda Howard is 14 and living with her parents and siblings in Lost Valley, Lane County, Oregon. I was told that Amanda walked across the Oregon Trail as a little girl but I haven't been able to find the exact date yet.
I can not find her in the 1880 or 1890 census so I assume she was married to the doctor then.
In the 1900 census she is married to my g.g. Grandfather, Essex Bowen. According to the census they were married in 1895. They as well as my Great-Grandmother, Merthi Bowen, were living on a farm in Lost Valley. I was told that the farm was purchased with money Amanda received from the doctor. Amanda continued to live on or near the farm in Lost Valley until her death in 1937.

Grandmother, Amanda Jane Howard, who was born in 1856 in Missouri. The man is only identified as Amanda's first husband. The only information I have for him was that he was a cancer doctor who died from cancer, probably about 1890. Any information or advice would be extremely appreciated.

As far as I know his name was David Clark Baker, born about 1858 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and he was married to Minnie Arabell Ricks. They had one son that I know of, Lawrence Everley Baker, born in 1901 in Umatilla County, Oregon.

Does it sound like this could be your great-grandfather?
Wow! Thanks for the information. It seems that Lawrence and his siblings had a pretty hard start in life.

My information on Lawrence E. Baker comes from his delayed birth certificate (I ordered a copy from Oregon's State Archives). It gives his parents' full names (David Clark Baker and Minnie Arabell Ricks) and his own full name (Lawrence Everley Baker) and date of birth. Of course, because it was a DELAYED birth certificate some of the information might have been from his own recollections from decades ago.

I do know he was living with his cousin Clyde McDonald Baker in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania in the 1920 census.

With regard to Daniel/David, he does turn up in the 1910 census for Umatilla County, Oregon; as you say, he is divorced, and working as a hired man on a farm. Do you know what became of him, when or where he died, etc.?

I have information on the Baker family line back to Dr. John Baker, the great-grandfather of David/Daniel. Let me know if you'd like a copy. (I could send a copy of the delayed birth certificate for Lawrence too.)

Thanks again for the information!

--Eric

King.
Mrs. Baker was born in Cleve-
land, Ohio, February 14, 1850, and
was justly proud of the fact that
she was the niece of Henry
Stowe, whose wife was Harriett
Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle
Tom's Cabin."
Crossed Plains in 1887
Mrs. Baker attended boarding
school in Cleveland and in 1865
was married to Jack Baker, an
officer in the Union army.
They crossed the plains in 1877
during the Indian war, arrived at
La Grande and came to Pendle-
ton soon after. She resided here
at 215 Beauregard street until
five years ago when she went to
Huntington. Mr. Baker died 20
years ago.
Of seven children, all are living
save the late Mrs. Cora Hoskins.
They are: Charles Baker, Stan-
field; Worl Baker, Pilot Rock;
Ervan Baker, Pendleton; Mrs.
Roy Spike, Boise; Mrs. P.C.
Hunter, Huntington; Mrs. R.A.
Leonard, Portland. There are 13
grand children and 14 great
grand children.
------------------------------
In the Pendleton East Oregonian, 28 September 1917, page 1, column 1:

PIONEER PENDLETON
MAN PASSES AWAY

JACK BAKER WAS PERSONALLY
ACQUAINTED WITH PRES-
IDENT LINCOLN

At the age of 83 years, Jack Baker,
a pioneer resident of Pendleton,
died last night. His advanced years
caused a general breakdown and he
had been declining for some time.
The funeral will probably be held
some time Sunday but definite ar-
rangements have not yet been made.
The body is in charge of Ralph Fol-
som.
Mr. Baker was born in the state of
New York, January 13, 1834. He
was married to Miss Mary E. Stowe
in the state of Ohio, January 9, 1865.
To them were born seven children,
three sons and four daughters all of
whom are living and who were with
him at the end. He is survived al-
so by his widow, 13 grandchildren
and one great grandchild.
Jack Baker was left an orphan
when a small boy and made his
own way in the world since that
time. He served as an apprentice
miller and during his life worked in
flouring mills in Colorado, Washing-
ton and Oregon.
He served in the Union army as a
sergeant from 1862 to 1865 and was
personally acquainted with Presi-
dent Lincoln. He was a pioneer of
Oregon, having come to this state in
1878. During the greater part of the
time since then he has been a res-
ident of Pendleton. Nearly a quar-
ter of a century ago he joined the
Methodist church at Echo and had
been a faithful member since. His
many friends, made during a long
residence in this community, will
mourn his passing.

Hi, Judy!

I wanted to say "Thank You" for the information you found! I do have to make one minor correction... The first Sam Neil for 1880 is actually a cousin to my Samuel Neil. The rest of the information is correct for my Sam Neil. /smile

It took alot of looking, and sorting these two out. Sam Neil from the first one in 1880 was a son of Nelson Neil, who was a son of Jesse Neil... Spencer Neil's uncle. This Sam also married an Amanda and raised children in Missouri. If I remember correctly, Nelson also had a son name Fidelo. This Sam Neil is also a few years older than Spencer's son. I want to say he was born in the early 1840ish, where mine is born in the 1850.

It has driven me nuts how this family dubulicate name, but if you were to go and look at what I am sure is Nancy Hill's grandmother, Nancy Royalty Hill; you will find that she may had a possiblities of 3 or 4 granddaughters name Nancy Hill.

I have also track down one of Nancy Royalty Hill's son living on another Indian Reservation in Nevada, Reuben Mason Hill. This family has been rumored and we have pictures that show they were very dark and have very distincted feature for a Native Indian; I am left to wonder about the two different Indian Reservations... Even today you will find some of those feature have been passed down to my own grandmother and uncles and cousins...

Thank you again for the information! I really do appreciate what you have found!!!

Beth~
bethholcomb@cox.net

I am looking for any information on the Neil (could be spell Neal) and Hill family living in Umatilla County, OR.

After doing much research, I am finding quite a lot of the family ended up in this county starting as early as 1869 with William James Neil and his wife Rosanna. But also his uncles and aunts are showing up as moving into the area at a later time:

1) Samuel B. Neil, uncle
2) Mary Louise Neil Box, aunt
3) Matilda and her husband George Box, aunt/uncle were in Umatilla county for a short time.
4) Nancy Cordelia Neil who married R. L. Oliver

Thank You,
Beth

BethHolcomb@cox.net
BAKER, CYNTHIA MAE STOWE- death record / obituary

Cynthia Stowe Baker, my grandfather's cousin, married Arthur J. Baker in Wauseon, OH on Feb 9, 1865. I recently found family notes that tracked them to Pendleton, Oregon. Cynthia Stowe Baker was born in OH around 1848. Can anyone help me by finding her death record? I believe they had a son Charles Baker. Thank you!

Thank you so very much for this information! I'll have to "wade through" it for awhile. I'm assuming this is the Cynthia M Stowe that married Arthur Jack Baker on Feb. 9, 1865 in Wauseon,OH.. (I have a copy of their marriage license.) There is some misinformation: Her name, her birthdate & marriage date. And...most people know that Harriet Beecher Stowe's husband's name was Calvin Ellis Stowe, not Henry Stowe. This is no fault of yours; I realize that you gave me this info straight from the sources. I only knew of one child, Charles Baker, so this helps a lot. Thanks!

Thanks, again! I just picked up your new reply. This helps to put the family together. It seems strange to me that she is named May E. Baker. Many people went by their middle names back then - as did her husband Jack. Thanks!

Hi Sue,
In the future when you post a query it is very important to include more information. A volunteer needs to know where to start (name, birth date and place) to ensure the info found is applicable to YOUR person.

I found a Cannon family in 1900 living in Long Creek, Grant Co., OR.
Abraham D. Cannon, b. MO, July 1844, marr 22 yrs, farmer.
Mary A. Cannon, b. IL, Nov. 1842, wife, had given birth to eight children but seven alive in 1900.
Effie P. Cannon, b. OR, Nov 1880, single.
Edna L. Cannon, b. OR, April 1883.
Earnest H. Cannon, b. OR, Dec. 1885.
Glenn L. Gilchrest, grandson, b. OR, Nov 1897.

I assume this is the correct family because an Edna L. Bayless in 1930 was living with her husband, Charles F. Bayless and chldren in Hood River, Hood River Co., OR.

But then there are two Ernest Cannon's who died in Oregon.
Ernest Cannon died 20 Sept 1950, Umatilla Co., Spouse=Willene, per death cert #10284. Source: OR Death Index 1903-98, www.ancestry.com.

An Ernest H. Cannon died 10 Sept 1967, Jackson Co per death cert #12916. Source: Same as above.

Before I do any further searching, I'd like to know which Ernest Cannon was yours.

Yes it is.

I have my grandmother's birth certificate.
Her name was Marie Leona, born January 21, 1905.

she passed away on March 29, 2007 , age 102 in Omaha Nebraska

Here is the story that my grandmother and her sisters told.

Minnie was born in Bonita Mo,

She was married before Daniel to a man named Price.
they had one daughter, Anna --

She then married Daniel.
They had 3 children.

Lawrence E Baker (are you sure it is Everly and not Ernest) my grandmother always claimed she name my uncle for him.

Claude (I don't know his birthday) - no one know what happened to him, the family story is that he was killed trying to hop a freight train.

Marie Leona. (1/21/05)

Minnie and Daniel were divorced whan Marie was 5 or 6 years old. I think Lawrence stayed with his father, and Claude and Marie with their mother.

Minnie remarried a man named Hart. they had two daughters.
Emery Rose and Alberta. When Alberta was about a year or two old, the family was near Rawlins Wyoming. The two babies were sick, and so Hart and Minnie sent Claude and Marie back to their father in Oregon.

Daniel then took all three, Lawrence, Claude, and Marie to live in an orphanage in Walla Walla. I don't know what happened to the two boys while they were there. My grandmother always claimed that the orphange separated the boys and the girls. She was never allowed to play with her brothers

Marie was sent to live with a family in Helix, Oregon as a hired girl. I think the family name was Gilette.
Don't know if you are still on these boards, but I think you may be talking about Daniel Clark Baker.

He was my great-grandfather.

Umatilla Indian Reservation - Question

Hello! First, I would like to say please email me at BethHolcomb@cox.net since this is my aunt account and do not want to mess up her settings. Thank you for your understanding!
-----------------------------------------------------
I have found recently, that a distant uncle and aunt were both are on the 1900 Census as follow:

Reservation, Umatilla County, Oregon, District 182

residence: Umatilla Indian Reservation
Umatilla, Oregon

Samuel B Neil and Mary Louise Box are listed #22 household

My curiosity has the best of me.. but would white folks be living on reservation? or is this the proof I been trying to find that they were Native Indians?

I do know in 1870, that the brother to both of these above, William James Neal and his wife, Rosanna; were also both living in Umatilla County, Oregon in Walla Walla Precinct; #157-#143. Post Office: Cayuse ((in the far left corner of the paper I have, PageNo. 21))

**The family would interchange the name Neil and Neal quite a bit. Please do not let this confuse you any. /smile**

What is this trying to tell me? or am I thinking all wrong about this family being Native Indians despite the stories we heard... I can provide more information if needed later!

Again, please email me directly at bethholcomb@cox.net since this is my aunt's account and I do not want to mess up her settings! Thank you for your understanding!!

Beth~
