Surnames: Purcell, Pursell
The 1880 Census for Lower Butler Creek, Umatilla County, OR
Andrew Purcell, (transcribed as Pursell), age 38, farmer
Anna M (N?), age 33, wife
Nelson W, age 4, son.
--The census was enumerated on 1 June 1880, so Nelson could have been born in 1875 or 1876.
Your data for a divorce in 1887 could help in your search. But, that was back in 1887. Any Superior Court record for the divorce might be in permanent archive. A divorce record today, of course would identify children and their care/visitation, etc. You could "try" to obtain the actual divorce record, but, I wouldn't expend much time on that.
For Nelson. I searched for ANY person whose name began with "Nels", born in Kansas, plus/minus 2 years of 1876. There were 31, one living in Oregon. None had a mother born in Canada. So, where did he go? Possibilities: He died. He had a different first name in 1900, thus not being found. He had a different last name...a great possibility. He and his mother went back to Canada...but where?
A genealogy society "might" help, but your search is in:
1. Divorce Records
2. Death Records
3. Cemetery records? I'd not waste time looking for those until you had information that they died. Not many cemeteries are transcribed, so, they might be there and you'd never know.
4. City Directories? "IF" one is available for that area, it "might" show the Purcell's as living there. Then, it might show Anna as living there, but not much more than that.
You need local help to start.
