Irene Leah Sutherland

Irene Leah Sutherland was born in Loup City, Nebr., on Dec. 11, 1920, to Joseph and Mary (Svafrajda) Stobbe.

Irene passed away in Tillamook on March 15 at age 89.

She married Vaud E. Sutherland on Nov. 29, 1941, in Denver.

During WWII, Irene worked on B-29 bombers as a riveter. After the war, she and Vaud moved to North Plains. Not long after they moved to Silverton, then to Beaver and finally to Pleasant Valley south of Tillamook, where they were long-time residents.

Irene was known as Mom to numerous foster- and shelter-care children. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. She always kept in touch and took good care of her family. Irene will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by sons Jerry and David Sutherland of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters-in-law Mary Ann and Christa Sutherland of Vancouver; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Irene's family would like to send a special thank you to her daughter and son, Maggie and Andy Leinbach for the wonderful care they gave her. Also thank you goes to Susan Strawn and all the rest of the wonderful hospice crew, as well as Mary Dean.

Memorial contributions in Irene's name may be made to Tillamook County Hospice. Arrangements are in care of Waud's Funeral Home in Tillamook.
