I have been researching Camp Adair. I have possibly, your answer. When Camp Adair as being built, they moved family plots to the west side of Fir Crest Cemetery. They named the two sections "English" and "Smith" after the two largest cemeteries that were moved. BUT, there were many other small family plots that were placed inside these two. You should be able to search these two for the names you are looking for

A big thank you for the obituary of Samuel Guilliams; it provided a great clue for a long-standing brick wall by giving Roscoe, the son's, location in 1915. We "lost" him after the 1900 census. Usually obtaining obituaries involve many messages and letters to libraries, museums, and genealogical societies with occasional hefty fees, so please consider yourself thanked about 4 times for a prompt and direct solution to my problem. I hope you get favors equal to the ones you give! I am in Anchorage at the National Archive, let me know if I can get you anything there. Cordially, Grace in AK

This is some information from this site

http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMC4XK_Smith_Cemetery_Mon...

Long Description:
Located just to the north of the English Cemetery, and West of the Fir Crest Cemetery, this is another relocated cemetery. It's original location was on the James Smith DLC, across from the town of Lewisville. Lewisville was located about 2 miles north of the existing town of Airlie. The relocation was conducted by Miller-Sherman Funeral Home of Junction City. It's also known as the Lewis Cemetery, as that family cemetery was placed here too. The Liggett Cemetery was also moved to Smith on October 14, 1942. Records are kept under the direction of Farnstrom Mortuary, Independence, Oregon. The approximate number of graves is 250.

He and his daughter, Amoretta Boche, whose obit and death certificate I already have, were buried in the cemetery then called the K P, for Knights of Phineas or similar. My understanding is that those burials were moved to the current Smith Cemetery, across from Fircrest. I would like the newspaper account if there was one, of clearing the old cemetery for the Army to install a base and of any remarks about an existing cemetery record used during the relocation. Neither of these burials appear in the current Smith record as near as I can tell.

Ancestry isn't working right at the moment. I sent you a message through Ancestry--with my email address. Answer that and I will send the death certificate via email. It does say K of P cemetery, Monmouth. I think you are going to have to get someone at the Polk genealogy/historical society to do some work for you. I didn't see this last message about other family members. Can get death certs next week--probably Tuesday--when I am in Salem. I don't have access to Polk County obits.

I discovered her father is not on any local cemetery list either, Samuel Newton Guilliams, b. Dec 1842 in IN, died 13 Sep 1915 in Monmouth. I would be interested in what cemetery it says on the death certificate, I don't need a copy, just which cemetery. It may say K P, which stands for Knights of Phinias, the one that was moved to make room for the Army camp. If you wish, I would like his obituary; that's only if it is easier there than in Monmouth. I want it to see if the obituary writer acknowledges Ross and happens to mention where he was. This will call for a tip or some gas $$! Cordially, Grace

If you are looking on a state-wide index, her brother Roscoe, also Ross, was last seen in Wasco county, where the estranged wife of James Seaton ran off with him to a logging camp in the Kingsley District of Wasco. They had a child together, about 1898, who may not be with them later being a relative passed him off as theirs. A real soap opera. Anyway, Ross was 29 in 1900, born in IA in 1870 and I never found him again. So if it is an easy search statewide, see if he turns up. If he does, I would like a copy of whatever you find. Ancestry could not read the card well enough to carry the record forward. It is filed under ?? and the film is really ???! Don't put a lot of effort in this as I think they went "underground." She would be under some arrangement of Lucinda "Lucy" Watson Seaton Guilliams! The card has her as his wife, but divorce from James Seaton was finalized about 1912. How far do you drive to go to Salem? Thanks, Grace

I doubt there is a stone being it appeared groups of Boy Scouts walked all the cemeteries. Her married name was Boche which one responder asked about so watch this board; I will post as soon as someone finds it so there is no duplication of effort.
I was going to offer to go to the State Archives while I was in Salem today, but couldn't find her on the Oregon death Certificate Index at Ancestry. There others with that last name in Polk County, but she isn't listed--I looked through every Guilliams name in the index that died in Oregon. Look up the Polk County Historical Society--moving the cemetery to build Camp Adair was a big deal and they may have more information. I might have time to look for a death certificate at the archives in the next few weeks--sometimes they just don't get indexed and when you look through the folders for the date, there they are!

I have the obituary of Amoretta "Nettie" S. Guilliams in which it is stated she was buried in the cemetery moved for the Army camp, presently Smith and/or Fircrest. She does not appear in either. I would like the death certificate to support my entering her in Find A Grave even if in fact she was not moved among the other burials or the record was not carried over. I realize that non-genealogists are involved in moving cemeteries and perfection is sought but not always produced. Death Certificates are being transcribed by volunteers but I think they have not gotten to 1910 yet. Thank you for your help. Grace in AK

Ana Angelica Badillo English --Obituary

The Headlight Herald, Tillamook, OR
December 4, 2012

Ana Angelica Badillo English

Ana Angelica Badillo English, 89, graduated from this life in her home in Dallas, Oregon, on November 20, 2012. She was surrounded by her family during her final days.

Ana was born on September 14, 1923, in Caguas, Puerto Rico. She was the seventh of eight children born to Gregorio Badillo and Secundina Carrasquillo.

Her mother died when Ana was five, from complications of childbirth. Her father passed away when she was 11. She lived with relatives until she was able to go to boarding school where she sang in the high school choir. Her life in Puerto Rico was very austere; no electricity, cooking over coals, and sleeping in a cot rather than a bed. Despite the primitive conditions, there was a strong sense of community. She recalled the neighbors turning up their radio so she and others could sit outside and listen from the sidewalk.

Following graduation, at the age of 17, Ana moved to New York City to live with family. She also spent time with family in Chicago prior to settling in Los Angeles with her brother Tom and his wife, Janice. Ana attended junior college and worked for Lockheed-Vega during World War II where she was a “Rosie the Riveter” on the wing assembly of the B-17 Flying Fortress.

While working at Lockheed-Vega, she met Gordon Comstock English. Shortly after they began dating, Gordon was inducted in the Naval Reserve and went to work for Pan American in the Bay Area. Realizing they were meant for each other, Gordon proposed, and they were married on August 12, 1944, at the Wee Kirk of the Heather chapel, at Forest Lawn, in Glendale, CA. They began their married life together in South San Francisco, CA.

Expecting their first baby, Gordon Jr., they moved back to the Southern California in 1945. Three more children, Virginia, Nancy and Gregory were born in California. Gordon and Ana relocated the family to Dallas, OR in 1964 where they became active members of the community.

Ana loved children. She was a den mother, church volunteer, member of the Dallas Women’s Club, and served as a bi-lingual instructional assistant in the Dallas and Central School districts. Ana and Gordon were hosts to several foreign exchange students throughout the years. She also spent many years providing child care for several children of family and friends. She loved being “Nana” to her grand-children and great grand-children along with Jandi Lucas, great niece and caregiver.

Over the years, Ana and Gordon travelled to Puerto Rico on several family trips. Ana enjoyed returning to the land of her youth. Over the years, Ana and Gordon traveled to St. Maarten, St. Thomas, Hong Kong, Spain, Great Britain, Canada, and Mexico. They also made regular visits to family and friends in California and across the United States.

Ana was preceded in death by brothers Francisco, Herman, Thomas, Ubaldo, and Jose’; sisters Virginia and Carmen; and grandson, Joshua.

Ana is survived by husband, Gordon; sons Gordon Jr. (Virginia) English, and Gregory (Joellyn) English; daughters, Virginia (Rick) Kirk and Nancy (Johnny) Kinder; eight grandchildren; six step grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, November 27th at 11:00 a.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church in Dallas. Interment was in Salt Creek Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church in care of Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center who is in charge of arrangements.

Richards Family

I am researching my husbands Richards family. Clarence Leroy Richards and his wife Mattie Ella King had several children in the Hill County, Texas area. Billie Ray, Albert Wayne, Edward Theodore, Hattie Faye and Verna Maye. Their oldest daughter Patsie Laveada was born in Terry County, Texas. They lived in several places around Texas but later moved to the Polk County, Oregon area, mainly Dallas.

Clarence was born in Paris, Texas. He was the son of Edward Doyle Richards and Hattie Victoria Mooneyham. I am told that the Mooneyham's have strong native american roots and had walked the trail of tears. I am still trying to prove that.

Mattie's parents were Theodore N King and Viola Maye Knoy. She was born in Eden, Texas. Theodore N Kind died when Mattie was quite young, and Viola Maye had to dig the grave herself on the farm where they lived. She later married John Snitcker and John adopted Mattie as his own.

If you have any common ancestors, I would love to compare notes!
Erin

How can I find out who owned the house at 165 Clay St. East in Monmouth in 1946-1947. My family rented this home during this time period and I believe the owner perhaps sold it in 1947. I believe the house was built in 1910 perhaps by the same 1946-47 owners.
Any help that you can provide will be appreciated!
Susanne

No, I'm not related to Effie. Her 2nd husband, Jessie Permenter, was the son of James Neal Permenter and Rosette Combs. I've been tracking this family, trying to connect James Neal up to the "big" Permenter tree.

Just thought I'd help you out with your search on Verna Ruth (Cooder) Waldow.

Hi Alice,
Thank you for posting up a reply. My father was 4 when his mother (Verna, Effie and Charles Cooders first child)died. There was a ton of bitterness on my grandfathers side and all my dad remembers is that he had a grandmother named Effie Permenter in Salem Oregon. My research on here has lead me to believe it is the same Effie May Cooder who later married Jessie Permenter in 1943 in Washington. This would explain the negative search results of Effie Permenter in 1940 because she was still a "Cooder". It doesn't explain why I thought perhaps the remains of my grandmother were sent to Effie Permenter in 1940 since Jessie and first wife were still married. hmmmmm...maybe my father is getting his facts mixed up...maybe in fact remains were sent to Effie as a Cooder, and later he discovered her last name was Permenter. That could be a possibility... none the less still trying to find my Grandmother Verna Ruths Remains....and where Effie and her first husband are buried. :) THanks again. ~Sarah

Found a death record for Verna Ruth (Cooder) Waldow in the Ancestry database, California Death Index, 1940-1997.

b. 24 Dec 1894 in OK
d. 27 Sep 1940 in Alameda Co., CA

Mother's Maiden Name:
Moore

This should help move things along for you!

Effie May Moore married Charles C. Cooder about 1893, according to the 1900 census for Payne Co., OK. Effie and Charles have a 4-year old daughter named Effie enumerated in that census. I suspect this is Verna Ruth, as she appears in the 1910 Marion Co., OR census with Effie and Charles.

Charles Cooder appears in the Oklahoma Territorial Census, 1890 and 1907. He is enumerated in the 1890 Census in Kingfisher Co.

Effie appears in the 1880 Greenwood Co., KS census with her siblings and her mother, Susan, who was born in Canada. Census indicates that Effie's father was born in Pennsylvania.

Charles is enumerated in the 1930 census, but by 1940, Effie is enumerated as widowed, head of household. I haven't found a death record for Charles Cooder.

Hope this helps!

Thank you do much for finding this marriage date for me. You do bring up a valid point about 1940 cremation ashes being sent to Effie before she was a Permenter. :). All my info and what I know is all hear say and not valid facts. It is very possible they were sent to Effie before she became a Permenter. What I do know for fact is that Effie became a Permenter after Verna was married. Thanks again :))) would you happen to know Effie's maiden name or birth name?

Sarah:

I cannot find Effie in the 1940 census, even searching without a surname (limiting by Michigan birthplace and dob 1869 plus/minus 5 years).

Does your cremation info give you a street address?

I see that the name of Effie's Permenter husband might be Jesse?

I have a Jesse Permenter who was in Polk Co., Oregon in 1940. His wife, Clara Jane Bales Permenter, died in 1941, so it is possible that he remarried, but I have not been able to verify a 2nd marriage. Jesse died in 1958.

The Oregon Death Index record for Effie indicates her husband's name was Jesse. I also see that there is an entry in the Oregon Marriage Index, Marion County, for a marriage between a Jessie Permenter and an Effie Permenter. Probably a bad transcription on the part of Effie's last name.

Have you ordered a copy of the marriage license?

Alice Permenter

Abraham Bolejack and James Dickey lived next door to each other with adjacent Donation Land Claims. We did a survey of the Thomas Dickey and Abraham Bolejack claims for the current owners, and found some of the original trees marked in the 1850s. Our survey can be found at the Polk County Surveyors Office website here: http://apps.co.polk.or.us/tiffpilot3/tiffpilot.exe?FN=//10.2...

We also did research at State Archives and found a couple of estate division cases for both Bolejack and Dickey.
