His obit probably won't tell you much. What I could find, will look again later.

Simon Peter Harmon married in Marion County, 12 June 1909. There were five marriages in Marion Co., on that date. Brides were Lela G. Foss, Alice Loella Green, Ethel Harrison, Margaret E. Kilburg, and Elizabeth Tabert.

The 1910 Census for Salem Ward 7, Marion Co, OR, enumerated 20 April.
Peter Harmon, age 53, born in Wisconsin to both parents born in Pennsylvania, second marriage for "0" years, carpenter/house, owned his home at 1463 Fir St.
Ella G, age 32, born in Ohio o both parents born in Ohio, mother of 2/neither living.
Margaret 13, (all children born in Wisconsin to both parents born in WI)
Adra G, age 9
Eunice I, 4
(Eunice born in Wisconsin, so Peter moved sometime 1906 or after to sometime before June 1909.

The 1920 Census for Salem Ward 7, Marion Co, OR, enum. 12 January. Owning at 1475 Fir Street.
Peter Harmon, 63, born in WI, laborer/lumber mill.
Ella, 40, born in OH
Adra, 18, WI
Eunice 14, WI
Elmer 7, OR
Elda M, 1 6/12 (born about June 1918)
--Adra was 9 in the 1910 census in April, she is only 18 in January 1920. So, it "appears" her birthday is between 12 January and 20 April 1901.

The 1930 Census for Salem, Marion County
Ellsworth Dearing, age 34, Born in Colorado to father born in Maine, mother in CO, laborer/sawmill
Ella A. Dearing, age 51, born in OH to both parents born in O, house work/ private family
Elmer C. Harmon, age 18
Elda M. Harmon, 11
James M Mendenhall, father-in-law, 82
Rachel J. Mendenhall, m-i-l, 77 (parents of Ella).

-------------------Pearl Margaret Harmon-----------
Not finding Margaret with the family in the 1920 Census, I found a "Pearl" Harmon was married 20 Nov 1917 in Marion Co. to either a Clarence N. Forette or Ralph Weddle
--The 1920 Census for Jefferson, Marion County, identifies Pearl Weddle as being born in Wisconsin to both parents born in Wisconsin. She was 23 (1896/1897). She and Ralph 31, born in Oregon, had a daughter Frances, 1 2?/12. Census enumerated 5 January.
--The Oregon Death Index identifies Pearl Margaret Weddle born 12 Sep 1896, died 12 Feb 1988 in Marion Co, spouse: Ralph.

The 1930 Census for Salem, enumerated April 10th. Renting 1510 Bellevue St.
Ralph W Weddle, 41, gang foreman/steam railroad
Pearl M, 33
Frances L 11
Marjorie E 7
Barbara J 3 5/12. (born about Nov/Dec 1926)

The 1900 Census for Prairie Farm, Barron County, WI
Harmony(as written and transcribed), born April 1858 in Wisconsin to both parents born in PA, married 5 years.

I found your online family tree and see you have found his records in the US Census. Your tree is well done, as it appears your research in various book repositories.

I only found one four-page "book" that has VERY remote information on the church in Oregon. You need a LOCAL researcher for detailed research into this area.
--The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness does have volunteers in Marion County; but, none appear to do the detailed work that you would require: http://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htm . If you do venture an attempt, read the guidelines first.
--The Marion County, OrGenWeb: http://orgenweb.org/marion/ has a volunteer listing. It also has commercial researchers. One, Beverly Przbylski is a member of a professional genealogy group. Which has better qualifications than most that charge for services. I have helped several over the years that have paid for research, and I've proven the research was "fraudulent". So be careful if you decide to pay for research.
--It does appear his time period in Oregon was very limited, so there may be virtually nothing on him in Oregon. So, I would seek an unpaid volunteer in Marion County to test the waters before expending any cash.
--I, and the other "researcher" live in Washington State, too far to be effective.

From the book:
---------------
Title:
Charles W. Smith's Pacific Northwest Americana : a check list of books and pamphlets relating to the history of the Pacific Northwest.
Authors:Smith, Charles W.
City of Publication:Portland, Or.
Publisher:Oregon Historical Society, Binfords & Mort
Date:1950
Page Count:388
Baptists. Oregon. General Association.
Proceedings of a convention to organize the Oregon Baptist General Association, held with the French Prairie Baptist Church, Sept 25, 26, and 27, 1857.

The Social Security Death Index shows Jesse Taylor, SSN 519-01-5933, issued Idaho, "Last Residence" Salem, Marion County, OR. "Last Benefit", Salem Marion County, OR. Born 29 Jan 1913, Died 1981.
---The "Last Residence" and "Last Benefit" are NOT indicators of where someone actually lived or died. Both depend on information provided by others to the Social Security Administration. Both have been known to be keyed to benefits paid to a surviving spouse, or back in 1981, to a person providing burial benefits. A "Last Residence" could have been provided by a local funeral home. Although the information "might" be correct.

The Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness for Marion County:
http://www.raogk.org/oregon3.htm
IS your best contact for information. A LOCAL genealogist can identify other resources, City Directories, County Recorder for recorded documents, liens, deeds, etc, County Assessor for property. Also the local phone book.
According to the Oregon Death Index at Ancestry, he was born 22 January 1909 and died in Marion County 1 August 1986. For more information I will need to go to the State Archives in Salem to view his original death certificate. It is possible the City of Salem's library might have an obituary. I am going to Salem on tomorrow and will try go get his obit, then we can go from there. According to the Social Security Death Index, he did live in Salem, Oregon. Hopefully someone will volunteer to get an obituary for you. There are no listings for the name Melkild in the telephone directory for this area.

James Wells, December 12, 1884. The cause was a difficulty of long standing and seems that in the eastern states Finch had seduced Wells' half-sister. Wells came to California and located at Ripon and Finch followed and obtained work in the warehouse; at one time he boarded and lodged with the Wells family. Just previous to the shooting it was reported to Wells that Finch had threatened his life. Wells at this time was teaching the Ripon schools on the main street, located where now stands the First National Bank. About 4 o'clock on the day of the murder, Finch was walking towards the schoolhouse and some of the men on the street remarked, "Now there'll be trouble." As Finch came near the schoolhouse Wells came out of the building and walked up to Finch. After a short talk, those watching the affair saw Wells draw a revolver and shoot at Finch four times. Two of the shots took effect and Finch was taken into John T. Bloomer's store. He was attended by Dr. B. M. Bainbridge but died shortly afterwards. As two of the witnesses of the murder John B. Matthews and Thomas Fredericks ran to the scene, Wells exclaimed, "I am sorry I had to shoot you, boy, you have been following me for years. You seduced my sister and this morning you insulted my family." Sheriff (Thomas) Cunningham hearing of the murder by telegraph hastened to the scene, arresting Wells and bringing him to Stockton jail. Wells was indicted by the Grand jury for murder, and his trial came up February 25, 1885, in the Masonic Hall as the old courthouse had been condemned as unsafe. He has sold his little house in Ripon to pay his attorneys, James A. Louititt and Wm. Dudley. The prosecuting was represented by the district attorney, Ansel Smith, assisted by Joseph C. Campbell. The jury went to their room on the evening of February 28, and the following morning reported that they could not agree, standing seven to five for acquittal. At a subsequent trial Wells was acquitted."

-----------------------

Red Bluff Daily News, 8 Feb 1921
Rev. James Wells Taught In Many Schools Of County
The funeral of Rev. James Wells who died at his home in Manton early Monday morning, will be held at Manton tomorrow at 1 o'clock. Mr Wells was 76 years, 9 months and 7 days old at the time of his death. He had been a resident of Manton and vicinity for thirty years and had taught school in many other sections of the county. He was a man on high ideals and a splended citizen. Mr. Wells is survived by three children, Ellen Arnol of Manton, E. A. (Ernest) Wells and Mrs Vilas of Modesto. The children have all been with him during his illness of several months. Beside the children there are surviving two half sisters and a half brother in San Joaquin county, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild.

----------------------------------

Baptist home missions in North America
By American Baptist Home Mission Society

INCLUDING A FULL REPORT OF THE PROCEEDINGS AND ADDRESSES OF THE
JUBILEE MEETING, AND A HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE
AMERICAN BAPTIST HOME MISSION SOCIETY,
HISTORICAL TABLES, Etc.
1832—1882.

Page 598
Nevada
Virginia City, Jas.
The Salem Public Library will look up obits for you for a fee of five dollars. The local paper, Statesman Journal, will provide it online for a small fee as well. If you search under obits, then archives, you can get a couple lines of the obit for Dorothy for free, which lists her parents, at least.
You might try looking for your Gronlund family in Clackamas County, it looks like they lived around Carver and Oregon City. Also, search in the Oregon Historical Records Index at http://genealogy.state.or.us/ That lists several naturalization records for Gronlunds.

Hi Amy,
I found a Jess C. Taylor who married Lucille Gifford in Eden, Jerome Co., ID 4 Dec 1933. Source: Volume 2, p. 160, Brigham Young University Idaho, http://abish.byui.edu/specialCollections/ .

I was surprized that I didn't find anything else on him and his wife Eileen.

The Marion Co., Oregon marriage records are filed in various places. You can see where they are stored at Oregon Archives, http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/ . Successful Searching!

They had 3 children Stanley, Marilyn, and LaVonne. Both Ted and Helen died in the 1980's. I am researching the Pelster family, with Ted's sister Minnie Pelster Burchell being our line. She died in 2008, and now youngest sister Edna is only one left. If you have any information please let me know. I have some family pictures to share.

Newsom family in Oregon near Mt. Angel and the answer to the question on Nusom Road

The Donation land claim and the residence parcels of two members of the Newsom family were located west of the Pudding River River near Mt. Angel Oregon and in section 17, although their land parcels overlapped adjacent section boundary lines of 3 other sections. The DLC you mentioned was 320 acres,so half a section. An easy way to envision this is a rectangle, half mile by a mile wide.
Based upon viewing the surveyors map of 1852 it would seem that the road name evolved from the surname of the occupants, Newsom, and their large cultivated parcel in the early day.
The approximate location of the residence of D. Newsom appears to have been generally between Prarie Creek and the Pudding River and more specifically very near or at the intersection of present day N Howell Prarie Rd NE and Nusom Road NE (on today's maps). This location is identified by conversion of the legal description of the donation land claim range township section information, and comparing this with the matching 1852 surveyor map to confirm the site.
Interestingly, The surveyor map shows the residence and the cultivated farm parcel of D. Newsom and also J. Newsom.

The present day Nusom road does not run directly east west and runs somewhat diagonally at this location. My guess is this is due to the evolution of the road from running across the private cultivated fields.
The 1852 map shows a north south wagon road running near exactly north-south for a distance of about four and a half miles just west of the Pudding River and terminating at the home, the residence, location within his land, of D. Newsom. From this point that road then runs near due south 4.5 miles where it intersected a wagon road leading to Howell Prarie running east-west.
Driving south from the 90 degree bend of today's Saratoga Drive NE thence south along N Howell Road NE to Nusom Road would put your vehicle driving over these two land parcels of Newsom members and very close to both historical residence locations. The land today is agricultural and cultivated, and the parcels seem to have been split to various owners and-or certainly various crops.
Hopefully my description helps you to identify the parcel location to some degree. An easy aerial view is on google maps, for example.

I went through the cemetery plot book and found Leander, but not James. I will take the picture this evening when it is a little cooler. I also found the following other Browns: Elsa, Emory, Lucy, George, Glen, Nadine, Lee and Martha, all near Leander. In other parts of the cemetery: Lloyd, Elizabeth, Dorothy; Martha, Charles, Giles; Jane Alice, Eldred; and in the Catholic part: Wesley & Zelpha. Martha & Chas. were the owners of a historic home in Stayton that is being restored. Take a look at http://www.brownhouse.org/
