I am seeking the NY bar association would be a possible source but do not know where to start that search.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Happy New Year's to my fellow genealogists.

John Lewis Nickel --Obituary

The News Guard
Lincoln City, OR
December 15, 2009

John Lewis Nickel

John Lewis Nickel of Lincoln City died Nov. 24, 2009, in Salem Hospital of an undiagnosed illness. He was 79.

John was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Hillsboro, Kan., to John H. and Tena Loewen Nickel. He attended schools in Hillsboro, Kan., and in Shafter, Calif. He attended Bakersfield College before transferring to The University of California at Berkeley. His BS degree was in entomology and he received highest honors in science upon graduation. He was Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year.

After a seven-year absence from formal studies, John returned to Berkeley for graduate work on the GI bill, and perhaps still holds the record of going from a BS degree to a PhD in just 21 months, again with honors for outstanding work. He taught at UC Berkeley for several years before leaving to pursue his interest in world hunger. His international work gained him many honors, including two honorary doctorates: one from the University of Berlin and from The National University of Colombia.

During the Korean War, John was drafted into the Army as a conscientious objector, in the tradition of his Mennonite background. He received training as a medic who does not carry weapons. Upon completing basic training, as a private, he was assigned to Walter Reed Medical Center research team, working on insect-borne diseases that affect soldiers on the battlefield - primarily hemorrhagic fever.

His passion to use his skills in research and management to alleviate world hunger was great. He was employed by the U.S. State Department and the Rockefeller Foundation and lived in underdeveloped countries for 30 years. Upon retiring, he worked for 15 years as a consultant for the World Bank, the German Aid Organization and the Interamerican Development Bank. The basic research done by this team of scientists have kept more than 400 million people from starvation, and has helped some countries, including India and China, to be exporters of rice, wheat and other food crops.

John is survived by his wife, Evy Warkentin Nickel of Lincoln City, whom he married in 1951 in Shafter, Calif.; two children, Carol Carter of Danville, Ky., and John Anthony "Tony" (Audrey) Nickel of Mount Hermon, Calif.; grandchildren Courtney, Clayton and Johanna; three great-granddaughters; sister Clara Sweet; nephews Ron and Phil Nickel; and nieces Cora Nickel and Karen Grim. He leaves to mourn his passing many other family members and friends.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14 at St. James Episcopal Church in Lincoln City.
The News Times
Newport, OR
Wednesday, Nov 4th, 2009

Jay W. Hahn

Jay W. Hahn, 58, of Newport, Ore., died of cancer on Oct. 31, 2009 at his home.

He was born May 9, 1951 to Jean and Lillian Hartstrom Hahn in Portland. He grew up in Portland and graduated as a pattern maker from Benson Technical High School in 1969.

As a young man, he traveled the country by riding the rails. His talents and charm lead to many interesting jobs during that time, including working with a traveling porpoise show.

He worked for nine years as a diesel mechanic and lead man at Freightliner Sales and Service. In 1985, he married Karen Anne-Marie Murphy, and they moved to Newport.

While working for Spiro Landscaping, Pacific Communities Hospital and the Lincoln County Road Department, he developed and later ran Tip Top Services, Inc. The company performed tree removal and excavations, and there wasn’t a piece of heavy equipment or a tree that he could not command.

He let his hands lead his life. He was known for salvaging trees, including managing the removal of a 90-foot Redwood blown on to South Beach in January 2007. His home is a testimony to his ability to turn trees into detailed, functional art.

He also built a shop and filled it with antique machinist tools. He could deconstruct any machine and return it to working order. He was in the process of building a line shaft.

He will be remembered for his dry wit, love of the written word, passion for sharing knowledge and his girlfriends. He willingly lent his help to individuals and the community, notably helping with the Newport Skatepark and the play structure at Yaquina View School.

He is survived by wife, Karen; son William; daughter Erin (Eric); sister Julie (Glen); brother Roger (Cindy); grandchildren, Carolyn and Bobby; nephews, Derek and Adam; and cousin Thom (Connie).

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at The Sylvia Beach Hotel, 267 NW Cliff St. in Newport. Memorial donations may be made to Oregon Coast Community Forest, P.O. Box 149, Newport, OR 97365.

Affordable Burial and Cremation in Newport is handling arrangements.
The News Times
Newport, OR
Tuesday, Nov 10th, 2009

Mark Alexander Treon

Mark Alexander Treon, 56, of Waldport, Ore., died of cancer on Nov. 6, 2009 at his home.

He was born Feb. 21, 1953 to Joe and Marguerite Treon in Pensacola, Fla.

Before moving to Oregon, he lived in the Philippine Islands, California, Nevada, the Marshall Islands, New Jersey and New Mexico. Above all, he was an artist, and in his capable hands, raw clay transformed into ceramic mugs and bowls, oriental lanterns, huge vases, and human faces and forms. He enjoyed the cool rainy weather, especially when he was in his studio firing his kilns or working up a lump of clay. He was a gifted craftsman who could turn lumber, glass and metal into a piece of furniture, a room, and studios filled with light.

He was compassionate and had a good sense of humor, a wry wit and a philosophical mind. He was an example of the power of service and fellowship in his community.

In the last year of his life, with his wife, Jessica, at his side, he visited France and Holland and Hawaii. Despite his ever-growing physical pain, he visited art museums he dreamed of, kayaked in the Pacific, and caught and released a 180-pound marlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Marguerite Treon.

He is survived by his wife, Jessica Woodul Treon; brothers, Bob (Tessie) Treon and Phillip (Janet) Treon; aunt Ann Bagley; cousins, David Bagley and Alex Bagley; and several other family members.

A celebration of life will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, 1353 Hwy 101 in Waldport. Those who attend should bring their examples of his pottery (marked with the owner’s name and phone number). His ashes will be scattered in the Pacific Ocean at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Suzanne Brown Student Aid Fund of the Lincoln County Oregon Music Teachers Association, 4796 NE Johns Ave., Lincoln City, OR 97364; Seashore Literacy Center, P.O. Box 730, Waldport, OR 97394; or Yachats Youth and Family Activities Program, P.O. Box 151, Yachats, OR 97498.

Affordable Burial and Cremation in Newport is handling arrangements.
