Hi Steph,

Although I have seen this film, it is not one in my collection so I don't have the information sheet that was typically included in each movie can. As I recall, Jay is a distant relatives on my mother's side. I guess Jay should be about 44 now. It was typical for my great aunt, Emily Frith, to use family members in her films. I will try to make contact with that party of my family to see if it is possible to communicate with Jay.

Is there anything in particular that you were wanting to know about the film?

Regards, Jim

Thanks for the info. I would like to say that I am positive that the teacher in the picture of the board and bat school was Bertha Johnson. I have both a copy of her teaching certificate and other pictures of her. She likely taught from 1891 until she married Jason Rand Oct 24 1891. Lucy Rand took over her duties. Lucy was the granddaughter of Edward Feak. His daughter Elizabeth was married to Martin Van Buren Rand. Lucy was 16 at the time.
If you go to this web sitehttp://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~westklic/hrhistory.h... and click on photographs and then Rand family, these pictures have been posted by Jeff Elmer. There is also info and photos of other Hood River families.

I received the list of names from Perry Wells' granddaughter Charlott. She had a copy of the picture with the names on the back including Bertha's.

On the 1880's a man by the name of Hans Lage donated land for a school, but after the school, a log building was constructed a survey was taken and it was found to actually be located on Edward Feak's property. Beings it was already there and in use Feak deeded it to the school. His daughter Lucy was the teacher there. Eventually the "board and batten" school known as the original Pine Grove School was built and that ended the Feak Log School. This school was located on property now owned by Mrs. Faith Ackerman across from Walter Wells& Sons packing house, on Mason Road in the Pine Grove district.

The picture everyone is talking about is the 1891 photo of the students at the "board and batten" Pine Grove School.

It does not appear that anyone by the name of Johnson was the teacher at that time, according to the names I have on the photo that belonged to my grandfather, who was a class member.

The class was: back row: Carrie Boardman, who was the teacher, Marie Mohr, Roy Jackson, Tillie Mohr, Anna Mohr, kBill Boardman, Laura Lage, Mabry Jackson, unknown, Perry Wells, John Henry Mohr, Orin Johnson, Front row: Minnie Paasch, Elsie Wells, Mary Brobst, Frank Boardman, Peter H. Mohr, Lizzie Paasch, Fred Paasch, Elmer Boardman, Byron Robinson, Burnette Duncan, Peter J. Mohr, Ed Lage and Warnie Wells.

The Boardman children were probably the children of the teacher Carrie Boardman or at least some other relative.

As it was only a one room school there would have only been the one teacher.

I HAVE COPIES OF ALL OF THE OBITUARIES FOR MADISON, HIS WIFE, AND MOST OF HIS SIBLINGS. I ALSO HAVE HE AND HIS WIFE'S LAST PICTURE, TAKEN ON THRUSTON ROAD IN LANE COUNTY. THEY MOVED TO LANE COUNTY OREGON WITH SOME OF THEIR CHILDREN, AND BOTH PASSED AWAY HERE. WHEN THEY DIED, THEIR BODIES WERE TRANSPORTED BACK TO HOOD RIVER, WHERE ONE OF HIS GRAND CHILDREN HAD PURCHASED PLOTS FOR THEM. I ALSO HAVE COPIES OF PHOTOS OF THEIR GRAVESTONE. I AM HIS GGG GRAND SON, THROUGH JOSEPH LELAND HART. WE ALSO HAVE MOST OF THE HISTORIC HEIRLOOMS PASSED DOWN, INCLUDING HE AND JULIA'S ROCKING CHAIR. MOST OF THE INFORMATION I HAVE OBTAINED ON THEM, I GOT FIRST HAND FROM FAMILY OF HIS YOUNGEST CHILDREN, BACK IN THE LAST 70'S AND EARLY 80'S.

IN FACT, HE DID FIGHT AS A CONFEDERATE, BUT LATER IN THE WAR LEFT DURING THE NIGHT WITH HIS WIFE AND BROTHER AND WENT TO KENTUCKY BY WAGON. THEY SETTLED THERE FOR A WHILE, AND THEN CAME TO HOOD RIVER, OREGON. FROM THEIR, SOME OF HIS CHILDREN STAYED, BUT HE MOVED WITH HIS WIFE AND YOUNGEST CHILDREN TO LANE COUNTY, OREGON. HE AND HIS WIFE BOTH REMAINED THERE UNTIL THEIR DEATH, AND THEIR BODIES WERE TRANSPORTED BACK TO HOOD RIVER FOR BURIAL. DURING HIS TIUME HERE, HE OPENED A LODGE UP THE MCKENZIE RIVER. OUR FAMILY STILL OWNS AND LIVES ON SOME OF THE ORIGINAL LAND HE BOUGHT HERE IN LANE COUNTY. THEIR HOUSE WAS TORE DOWN A FEW YEARS BACK. UP UNTIL JUST 10 YEARS AGO, I STILL SPOKE WITH FAMILY THAT KNEW HIM PERSONALLY, AND ONE THAT EVEN HAD THEIR ORIGINAL PHOTO ALBUM AND ATTENDED HIS FUNERAL. I ALSO HAVE ALL THE OBITUARIES AND A PIECE OF THE FURNITURE THEY BROUGHT FROM NC TO KY TO OREGON.

AN INTERESTING NOTE, WE ALSO HAVE A PICTURE OF THE BLACK COUPLE THAT KEPT HOUSE AND WORKED THE FIELDS FOR THEM HERE IN OREGON. APPARENTLY, HE HAD SOME CHANGE OF HEART, AND ALLOWED THEM TO LIVE IN THE HOME AS EQUALY, AND EVEN EAT AT THE KITCHEN TABLE WITH THE FAMILY.

You identified Reuben was in Hood River in 1918, so I'm assuming you have access to Ancestry.com, or already have his World War I Draft Registration Card (from the images online).

But, let me add some questions/comments from this card and other data:

The WWI Draft Registration Card shows Reuben Garfield Howard was born on February 20, 1882, and was 36 years of age. (I find the actual year on these cards off by one year about 50 percent of the time). Spouse Bertha May Howard.

The 1910 Census for Hartford, Ohio County, Kentucky. Enumerated May 1910.
On the same census page is the couples/families of Bud/Josie; Lawrence/Jane, Sylvester/Alverta, William and Sarah (Sarah being the mother age 60, mother of 7, 6 living. and:
-Reuben, age 28, born in Kentucky to father born in Tennessee, mother in Kentucky
-Bertha age 17 (1892/93), married less than one year, no children
The difference in age is 11 years on this census, enumerated 5/1910

The 1920 Census for Bend, Deschutes Co, OR
Reben (As written on the census) is 39 not 29. That matches the age difference from the 1910 census, given the dates of enumeration. This census was enumerated on 13/14 January 1920. It appears he was a laborer, in "sewers for city"
Bertha 26 (1893/94)
John W, age 8 (1911/1912), born in Kentucky
Loretta, 3 3/12, born about September 1916 based on enumeration in January, born in Oregon.
--Based on the enumeration dates of the 1910 and 1920, Bertha appears to have been born between January and May 1993)

The Kentucky Birth Index 1911-1999 has a John W. Howard born 10 March 1911 to Bertha Webster (Maiden name) in Ohio County.

1930. The person found in Frenchglen, Harney County was listed as "JOHN", not "Jack", both parents born in Kentucky.

The Social Security Death Index shows a John W. Howard, born 10 March 1911 (matches Kentucky Birth Index), died 8 January 1973. This index does not identify where he died. His Social Security Number was 541-14-3000, a number beginning with 541 was issued in Oregon. You can obtain an exact image of his application for his SSN from the Social Security Administration. This image will show his parents, his address upon application, his type of employment, etc.
--This "somewhat" proves John was in Washington from the initial registration of Social Security to a point before 1951 that John was in Oregon. He may have applied for his SSN in the mid-forties, then moved, or lived in Oregon to at least

The World War II Army Enlistments database shows a John W. Howard, born 1911 (but in Kansas), living in Deschutes, Oregon, enlisted on 19 August 1942 in Sacramento, CA. He had Grammar school education, a farm hand, single without dependents, 67 inches in height, 138 pounds.
--This "appears" to be the correct person; BUT there is NO PROOF this person is the same as being searched.

A family tree of Chrishill7759, living in New Jersey, has pictures of Howard members, to include the tombstone of Bud Howard. He is buried in the Rosehill Cemetery, Piedmont, South Carolina. He was Elisha Shadrack Howard, born 1864, died 1934 in Greenville County, South Carolina. She identified "Ruben Garfield", "Bertha Webster", "John W", by date of birth, but no date of death or other information. She identified the sister as "Lorktta Howard", born 1916, no further information. She "might" have more information, just not posted online. In that regard, I sent a message through the service for her to read this thread.

I can't find anything more on John.

Ron Bestrom

He might have been a seasonal worker for Friday. Many were in those days. The Friday Ranch was located at what is now Sunday Drive and Neal Creek Road, actually between the Pine Grove Districk and small community of Odell. The Friday Ranch was either next door or part of what would become the farm of the well known evangalist, Billy Sunday.

I looked through the websites offered by the other "poster" and found nothing to lead to this Tom Lee, or potential help there.

(I guess my first question would be if you are related or have any information on this person. In your other postings, I see World postings, stats and accuracy ratings so that throws me as to your connection).

You may have family or other data that would significantly help in research of this person. If you know when and where he was born that is prime information. If you know where he might have been for the 1900 US Census that would help in identifying him in later census. If you know any names of his siblings or parents, that would also help. Just the name "Tom Lee" finds thousands.

You narrow your search to the period of 1910 to 1920 in the area given. Do you know the name of this apple orchard for which he worked, or the name of the employer? There are many times that a census enumerator does not write well and a transcriber makes errors mis-identifying a name, so he might be in the census, but "hidden". Without additional information as to his age, where born, etc, that makes it difficult for a bonifide researcher to find him. I also checked the land purchases under the Homestead Act and found a Thomas E. Lee obtaining land in 1911. So, if you know his full name, that might also help in finding him.

Ron Bestrom

My great uncle & aunt, Walter Gerry & Virginia "Jane" (Woodward) Gloyd operated a boarding house for a short period of time in Hood River in the very early could have been before their daughter, Marion Olive Gloyd, (born May 11, 1901 in Portland, OR) left home for New York City at age 16, in 1917. It could also have been after 1917 & before Walter's death in 1938.
I doubt if the Gloyd's owned a boarding house; I imagine they rented out rooms in a house they rented.
They had already tried their hand at homesteading near Silverton at Scott's Mills, operating a prune orchard near Tigard or Newberg and ended up living in the Prederman home on Mt. Tabor as caretakers. He was a dreamer, not a business man or farmer, though may have thought he was.
Barbara (Dunkelberger) Beck Hess
5316 SW Erickson Avenue
Beaverton, OR 97005
barwayhess@aol.com
503-641-1009
Re: Filmmaker Emily Benton Frith

Jim: How nice to hear from you. I saw from Emily's obit that she traveled extensively, but there was very little about the circumstances surrounding her marriage in China. Do you know how long she was married, and what happened to her husband?

I apologize for this rather long post, but I should explain my interest: (1) I am looking into whether Emily maintained a friendship, if any, with with a relative of mine who worked for her father, and (2) How and why Emily started to make films.

Please feel free to respond to jgerber@wclv.com.

My relative, Joseph Emil Huber, worked for Wilber Benton, Emily's father, at Benton's Drugstore in Peoria, from at least 1887 to 1906. He, like Wilber before him, attended the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. He later became a physician and practiced in Peoria. He died at the age of 50 in 1917. Wilber was one of his closest friends and was a witness to his will.

In fleshing out what happened to Wilber, I found his 1930 obit, which mentioned his survivors, including Emily. The Bentons are buried at Springdale Cemetery in Peoria. When I found "Emily Benton Frith" on Emily's grave, but no husband buried nearby, I was curious, and this led to the search for Emily's obit. Searching her name on the internet, I discovered the films. There was no substantive information about the company or how and why she decided to produce films.

Emily and her brothers no doubt knew Joseph (1866-1917), and his wife, Mary (Mamie) Walker Huber (1867-?), who married in 1896. I believe Joseph and Mary met when she was hired at the pharmacy around 1891. After Joe's death in 1917, Mary remarried about 1920 to John E. Bowden and moved away from Peoria, but Mary's trail has dried up.

Ultimately, I am wondering if Emily kept photos, diaries or correspondence that might reveal contact with either Joe or Mary.

Emily's films remind me of some I saw in grade school in Peoria. It must have been fascinating having a great-aunt so well-traveled and no doubt full of stories.

Thanks again for any light you can shed on the above.

Jackie

Hello, I noticed your posting regarding Emily Benton Frith. Looks like you were able find her obit. If you need any more information I could probably help. Emily was my mothers aunt, and an important figure in our lives when I was growing up. As a kid and young man, I always took an interest in her film making. When she left me her library of personal films, copies of many of her "Frith Films" educational films, assorted cameras, projectors, etc.

Regards, Jim Carr
