Checked marriage records in Oklahoma and found a Lance Wikstrom marrying Cecil M. Cunnigham (suspect this is probably a typo and could be Cunningham) filing marriage license Feb. 22, 1928 in Creek County, Oklahoma. This could be your guy.
thegenhelper

5-10-2013

Unfortunately there are no public databases of Oklahoma deaths that I know of where you could do a search of the Wikstrom name to see if the people you were specifically interested in were dead. If you wanted to submit a claim for a death form to the Oklahoma Department of Health, for $15.00 per name you could request each of their death certificates, if you are related to them. knort4 Researcher

I'm looking for the relatives of Lula Mae Smith. She lived and died in Oklahoma. She had a daughter born in 1934 Emma Lou Long who later changed her name to Virginia Louise Mason. She was married to a Jim Smith. I do not know my great grandmothers maiden name but I do have a picture of her parents. I do not know there name. If any of this sounds like it matches your family please contact me. The person with the Pink panther is Lula Mae. The black and white photos are her parents...any information would be helpful.

Yep.....and have all that info too. Sorry you went to all the trouble.
Lance's gr-mother was a cousin to my gr-gran-mother & I was hoping to find living relatives but, in my travels down the ancestral tree, I lost Lance & his wf. & am just dying to know what happened to them!!

I know Eloise wound up in CA as did her gran-father Elmer Lane(d. 1961) but, it's the years bet. 1922 & 1930 that have me baffled...AND what happened to Elmer's wife Leona Lane?? And, how did Eloise go from marrying Albert Moore in 1934 to being Mrs.Herbert Welsh living in LosAngeles 1940!!
And if my research is correct, Eloise may have married several more times & was last known as Eloise Jakubiec of Las Vegas May 23,1995.
And the beat goes on... :)

btw..thank you

I appreciate all the responses. I already had birth dates, but I was looking for actual on-line birth records so that I did not have to order the birth certs from Oklahoma state Health at $15 each (that's pretty expensive). But I have ordered my mother's birth cert. Thank you all for helping.

Oklahoma did not become a state until 1907. Oklahoma began filing birth records in October of 1908. It was not mandatory, however, that these records be filed until 1917. Because birth records were not required in years past as they are today for identification, the filing process in many years prior to 1940 are sketchy. Since many individuals are still living that were born in the 1920's & 1930's, it protects their identity from theft by not posting these on online.

http://www.ok.gov/health/Birth_and_Death_Certificates/Birth_...

Can't find a City or County named "Chauley" in Arizona or her place of birth, Arkansas either.
I tried other spellings for Chauley, based on the 1940 census and as it is handwritten, it looked similiar to Chaulcy, Chauloy, Chanloy, Chanlcy...
Frustrating isn't it?
There was nothing for a city named "Chauley" in any of these states either.

Are you sure of the city name, spelling and state? Birth and death records are difficult to read as they were handwritten, and sometimes transcribed incorrectly.

What is the name?
In celebration of 4th of July I am posting information about your Revolutionary War ancestor, Ludwig, or Lewis, Hering (Herring).

There is a site named HeritageQuest which is a subscription site. I do not have a subscription but I do live in a metropolitan area with a library that does have the subscription, and makes it available to library card holders on their home computers. I found the pension application from the widow of Ludwig Hering, and I could see that it included the names and birth dates of children. However, it was very difficult to read. By doing a Google search I found the following information online. There are several abbreviations, so it might take a little time to get it all read. However, note this birth: Samuel Hering, b. 28 March 1802.

This is from the book, "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Applications".
HERING, Ludwig or Lewis Herring, Anna Maria, R4924, PA Line, sol m 3 Apr 1783 in Berks Co PA to Anna Maria Brochen or Broch, sol d 23 Sep 1836 in Venango Co PA where he had lived 30 yrs having moved there from Berks Co PA, wid appl 26 Apr 1838 Venango Co PA & she later reapplied 27 May 1842, children were; Christian b 9 Jan 1784, Henry b 12 Jan 1786, Chatarinna b 29 Sep 1788, Sophia b 18 Sep 1790 Daniel b 13 Oct 1792, Ludwig b 14 Nov 1794, Heman b 24 Oct 1798, Samuel b 28 Mar 1802 & George b 1 Jan 1805 also shown were; Nancy Deetz b 22 Mar 1815, & Nancy McCalm b 26 Mar 1818, the son Henry was of Venango Co PA in 1838, in 1856 the son Daniel was of Franklin, PA in 1840 sol's sis Christiane was aged 75 & was the wife of Godfrey Dreher who was aged 83 & they were of Schuylkill Co PA

And now to a couple of census records:

1850 Ohio, Blanchard, Hardin County
Samuel Herring, age 48, b. I found the 1850 census for the correct Samuel Herring and will include it in a future post. He and his wife, Eliza, had 7 sons before having a daughter. They named her Rejoicy!

Hi, I have several things going on today so cannot post all that I want to send.

Your Herring line not only includes a veteran of the Civil War (Union), but also a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Ludwig Herring (also seen as Lewis) served in that war from Pennsylvania. His father’s name was also Ludwig, who came in from Germany, I think in 1742.

I am sending a link to Search Family Trees, starting with the name William Henry Herring, grandparents of Leslie Herring of Lincoln Co. OK. They came into Lincoln County before the 1910 census.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I do need to warn you that mistakes can often be found in this kind of information. If you click on the name, Clarence Leslie Herring, you will find that the person showed Leslie’s name as Lester and stated he died before 1996. No source is sited. I wonder if she mixed him up with the Leslie Herring b. about 1924, who lived in McCurtain County. The father of that Leslie was also named Clarence, but the maiden name of the mother of the McCurtain Co. Leslie Herring was Freeman. That Leslie died 1995 in CA. They are not the same person.

The Othel Herring is shown in the census record as male rather than female, so I think he was Leslie’s brother. Enumerators can make mistakes even on the sex listed. One of my aunts was shown as male in the 1900 census, but was correctly identified as female in 1910. The name Othel/Othal came from 2 different families. There was an older Othel Herring who was Leslie’s uncle from his father, and there is an Othal C. Crail who was Leslie’s uncle from his mother’s side.

When I have time to post more information, this will probably make more sense, but you can be looking through all the names at the above link. I have been looking for obituaries that might help clarify relationships, so far without luck.

You are fantastic! I ran the names of the children by one of my aunts (my grandfather's daughter), and she said that she did remember hearing that her father had a sister named Othel and a brother named Roy. So, this has got to be the correct information. She was very happy to learn the names of her father's mother and father (as was I). I cannot thank you enough. Any further information you come across would be so wonderful. Thank you so very very much! Your help with this has been such an amazing thing. THANK YOU!!!

I enjoy family research and live in OK, so I am glad to provide what information I can find. Some of this I have already sent to you, but it helps sometimes to review.

The Social Security Death Index information for Michael Ellis Herring shows that the number was issued in Oklahoma, so we know he lived in OK at one time. Your first post indicates his birth name was Leslie Herring, and his family might have been from around Chandler, which is in Lincoln Co. OK.

The parents of the Leslie Herring, Lincoln Co. born about 1926 were:
Clarence Leslie Herring and Gertha Mae “Gertie” Crail, who were married 5/02/1913, Lincoln Co. OK.

Numerous members of Leslie Herring’s family can be found in Lincoln Co. Go to findagrave.com and click on cemetery search. Fill in Parkland Cemetery, Oklahoma, Lincoln Co. Leslie’s mother, Gertie, died 1941, her burial information can be found, as well as his grandparents, William H. and Manda J. Herring (I think there is a photo of their double stone.) There is also burial information for a brother, Johnny Herring, and a sister, Fronia Thompson, as well as burial information for several of his uncles and aunts. Findagrave gives the address of Parkland Cemetery as Agra, but the Oklahoma Cemeteries site give directions indicating it is near Chandler. It would be a rural cemetery, somewhere between these two towns.

I have tried to find information re Michael Ellis Herring in more recent years to see if I can find a link between him and this Lincoln Co. Herring family. Naming patterns can sometimes be important. Although certainly not proof, they can be a clue. So, beginning with the 1920 census, here is what is shown as brothers and sisters of Leslie Herring.

1920, Lincoln Co. Union township (Union Twp is just north of Chandler.)
Clarence L. Herring, 29, MO
Gertha M., 25, MO
Freddie L., 7
Roy I., 4
Annie M., 2
Norma M. (couldn’t be sure of first name), 2 mos.

1930 Pawnee township, Lincoln Co.
Clarence L. Herring, 39, Mo, MO, IN
Gertie M., 36, MO., U. S. U. S
Freddie L., 17
Roy E.,14
Millie M., 12 (this should be the Annie M. of 1920)
William M. 7
Everett L., 5
Lessie, 2 yrs, 7 mos
Othal C., 1 yr, 10 mos.

I sent the 1940 census in a previous post. Note that sometimes there are mistakes in names, especially middle initials. Also I see that the family had an older son named William M. but also had a young son, Billy.

I did a Google search for Michael Ellis Herring and this entry came up. Roy E. Herring, age 56 (I think this might have been from around 2010.) Names shown as relatives or associates: Michael Ellis Herring, Leslie Marvin Herring, Ethel G. Herring, and Cynthia R. Herring. There is no further explanation of relationships. In another document I learned that Roy E. Herring and Leslie Marvin Herring are brothers. Could these be sons of Michael Ellis Herring? I think that the middle name of Roy E. Herring might be Everett. Leslie Herring of Lincoln Co. OK had brothers, Roy, and Everett, and of course there is the name Leslie.

In a later post I will send additional information of the earlier generations with a link that you can follow.

I would love any information you can send about this Lester Herring. I do know that that is not my grandfather's name, but if census records could be incorrect, then it may be. Thank you so much for all the energy you have put into this for me.

Sultana Rodgers is a very unusual name. A Royal Navy officer named Rodgers who served at Constantinople in 1918-20 married a Russian woman whose name I could look up. Their daughter was born in Constantinople and named Sultana. The Rodgers parents settled later in Australia.

At last the 1940 Oklahoma Census is indexed and searchable.

I found a Lester Herring, age 14 (b. estimated 1926), living in Lincoln Co. This is the same person as the Lessie Herring in the 1930 census, b. about 1928. But that is the way census records go.

You indicated that the man you were researching was born in OK, possibly around Chandler. Chandler is in Lincoln County, so this might be the RIGHT one.

I am posting his immediate family from the 1940 census. If you recognize any names, or if you would like me to post the additional information I found in census records, please respond to the message board.

Clarence Leslie Herring, age 49, b. MO
Gertie Herring, age 45, b. MO
All children were born in OK
William, 17
Everett, 16
Leslie, 14
Othel, 11
Fiona, 9, female, not sure of spelling
Johnnie, 7
Billy, 5
Rita Mae, 3 months.

I believe that at least of couple of the younger ones are still living. Othel Clarence Herring can be found in the online white pages, age 82, living in Chandler, Lincoln Co. OK

Rita Mae married Loy Lee Tanner, 9/01/1960 and is shown as currently living in the area of Agra, Lincoln Co. OK.

Clarence L. Herring married Gertie M. Crail, 5/02/1913, Lincoln Co. OK

The ggrandfather of this Leslie Herring was Hezekiah J. Herring who fought on the side of the Union, from MO. His physical description: age 23; height 5’8”; complexion, light; eyes, blue; hair, light; b. Vanango Co. PA.

I felt bad about what was apparently the wrong Leslie Herring with my first posting. Do you want me to send more about the family of this 2nd Lester Herring?

I have no information about his parents or grandparents. After speaking with my Aunt (one of his daughters), I learned that she never knew her grandfather's name (he was only grandpa). I am very very interested in the information you found and would be truly grateful if you could share any of it with me. Thank you so very very much from the depths of my heart!!!

Most of the free Social Security Death Index sites have discontinued showing the SS number. However, by doing a Google Search for the name Michael Ellis Herring I did find one site that has the SS number. Scroll down to the name Michael Ellis Herring.

http://www.death-record.com/d/n/Michael-Herring

In the 1930 Oklahoma census I found a Leslie Herring living with his mother in the home of his grandmother, Rowena (Roena) Herring. Leslie’s age is shown as 6 years, but census records are often off on ages. They were in Garvin Co. OK, but most of the time they were in McCurtain Co. OK, near Broken Bow. I learned quite a bit about the family of this Leslie Herring. His parents were married in McCurtain County, so possibly that is where he was born.

It might be that you have the information about the parents and grandparents. But if you think this might be your Leslie Herring, and need the information, l will be glad to post what I found.

my grandfather Michael Ellis Herring

My grandfather was born Sept. 7, 1926 in the state of Oklahoma (possibly Chanler?). He died August 23, 2010 in the state of Washington. He was born Leslie Herring (no middle name). He had his name legally changed to Michael Ellis Herring at some point. I know that he was born a twin and that his twin died at a very early age (although this was not really spoken about). I am trying to find his social security number so that I can run it through the National Indian Registry. I remember stories he told about his mother being full Cherokee Indian. I would really like to know his social security number, if anyone can help me.
