Sarah Jane Culleson Sloan was my great grandmother. That was her Christian name. I do not know her given name. You will probably not find any records on her. The records office for the Osage Nation in Pawhuska, OK burned down a long time ago. She was full blooded Cherokee. A little known fact is that a Cherokee chief tried to buy her from my great grandfather. They were married on the reservation. Her husband was from Pennsylvania. I'm sorry I couldn't be more help. Sarah Sloan

Yes I do. How are you related? My Pearl Sherfield was the daughter of James Sherfield and Barbara Ellen Farris. Is that the Pearl of your interest? If this is the Pearl let me know & I'll find it this weekend. As far as I know her siblings were Asher, Zora, and Willis (his twin William died in infancy). I think I only have a picture of Ola Mae as a baby. I never had much contact with the Sherfield side of the Family, just uncle willis. A good source of information re: the Sherfield side is Pat Irvin. Her GM was Minnie Baker (Sherfield) Minnie was married to Asher.

Indians full citizenship 1924, photo Calvin Coolidge, Osage Indians, Whitehouse, who are the people in the photo?

On June 2, 1924, President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill granting Native Americans full citizenship. Coolidge posed with four Osage Indians in front of the White House to commemorate the event.

The Whitehouse Photo
http://memory.loc.gov/learn/features/immig/images/osage.jpg

My great grandfather is in this photo and it has been passed down to us that his life story and as well another photo of him in full native dress, along with this photo from the Whitehouse, was published in a popular magazine of time, perhaps in the same timeframe of the signing of the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924.

I am trying to locate the magazine article that published his life story. I have searched Time magazine's online database and did not locate an article discussing this Whitehouse photo, only articles pertaining to the signing of the act.

Anyone with Osage history, please tell me the names of the individuals in this Whitehouse photo? The National Achieves did not label anyone in the photo, other than Calvin Coolidge.

The illusive magazine photo that had been passed down to us by stories, was recently discovered in the papers of his wife Rebecca Wentz' family. So we know it exists, we just can't find the name of the magazine it was published in, or the text of the article that went with the picture.

Julius Antonio Rivera

born July 4, 1875, in California, per the social security death records

died August 30, 1957, Los Angeles, CA

The 1930 Federal Census, incorrectly spelled his last name

1930 census
Julius age,54, age first marriage, 23, born California, father born US, mother born US
Rebecca age 58, age first marriage, 27, born Kansas, father born Germany, Mother born Germany,

1930 United States Federal Census

Name: Julius (Riviera)Rivera
Home in 1930: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California
Age: 54
Estimated birth year: abt 1876
Birthplace: California
Race: Indian (Native American)
Relation to Head of House: Head

Spouse's name: Rebecca, Birth Date: 8 May 1871, KS

Household Members: Name Age
Julius (Riviera)Rivera 54
Rebecca (Riviera)Rivera 58

williamverllittle@yahoo.com

Little Wentz Family Site
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~williamlittle/littl...
I have information that the mother of my great-great grandfather George Washington Tevis (or Tivis)was Osage. He was born in 1823. His father was French with the original surname of deTevillis. I have also seen George recorded as John Washington Tevis and Tivis. There is much family lore connected to this, of course, including a belief that she was the daughter of a chief. (That tale may have grown taller on down the line as they say.) I do have a photo of my great grandmother wearing some of the Native American artifacts. This family may have settled around Alton, Illinois.

I am thrilled to find this forum as I have been stuck on this for several years now. Would there be any resource that could help me with the small amount of info I have? Also, I'm wondering if anything in the picture might give a hint or confirm the Osage connection.

Thanks in advance for any help available.

Misha
How exciting, I just checked my posting and there was your reply. Thank you so much. My g.... parent names were John and Mary Haynie, so its possible the names listed could be relatives.
Can anyone help me with my search for my father's Osage roots? I've been told my father (Earl Keel/Keal) had a younger brother named Leland. The brothers were 2-3 years apart in age. They would be around 77-79 years old today. To my knowledge there were no other siblings. My grandmother was born and raised on the res and was full blood Osage. She married my grandfather who was Puerto Rican and they lived in Oklahoma City for some time around 1954. Any information would be appreciated no matter how small.

Brad Randall

Her brother Ed Penn was a large portly, good-natured fellow."

Note: Conner and Penn were married in 1874. Angelina would pass away 5 years later.

Hi! At this point I am just desperate. I don't know if you can help me or not. My great grandmother and her brother Albus or Alvas Sullivan was born in Indian Territory. Her name was Idella Ida sullivan. Idella and her brother were raised in Buckner's childrens home in Dallas Texas. I have thier records from Buckner and it states that there parent's were R. L. Sullivan and Nancy McCullough. Idella's death certificate says that her father's name was Robert L. Sullivan. The orphanage paper's does not say exactly where they came from, just indian territory. It doesn't say what happened to the father but does say that the mother died in childbirth. Do you happen to have a sullivan / mccullough tie in your line?
Thanks
Dalina

Here is some info I have on PENN which is likely connected to Edward Penn.

Winfield Courier, July 10, 1874: Bill Conner, a Little Osage Chief, married Miss Angie Pyne (Penn), of Osage Mission last week.

Antoine Penn (a French Canadian) died in 1853 after a measles epidemic broke out at the Osage Mission, where he was buried on April 19. He was about thirty years of age. He had married an Osage, Pelagie Mongrain, in 1842. A daughter, Angeline Penn, was seventeen months old at the time of her father's death. Angeline Penn Conner died in 1879 during her daughter's infancy.

For the year 1878-William Conner, age thirty-two; and Angeline Pen or Hum-pa-to-kah, age twenty-six,-received $3.40 in cash for the first half-year and $3.50 for the second.

William Conner remarried Adeline Newman and had one son, Woodie Conner, who was born in 1882 and died in 1931.
