I was told that my great grandmother was Comanche-she was supposedly stolen in a raid by some settlers in a little town named Harkeyville in Texas in the late 1800's-they named her Truelove and she married my great grandfather. I don't know if anyone can help me but would appreciate any information. Thank you, KMogg

JOJO LANE is my deceased father's cousin. He is buried in the Little Washita KCA Indian Cemetery in Fletcher, OK. Birth: 12-4-1887 Death: 8-6-1972. I am trying to find more information about him and the family and what tribe he was from. His father was Hayden Lane. Jojo was married to Irene Pahcoddy at time of death. Her parents are also buried in this cemetery. His step sister is Marie Lane Realrider who died 5-10-2007 was married to Austin Realrider. His headstone says he was a father and a grandfather and I would like to connect with these people. I visited the cemetery this summer but was unable to do any other research at that time. Thank you for your help.

On the allotment list of 1879-1901 I found my great grandmother Petra Senoya. Other names are listed with her:
Alice, Armstrong/James, George Caervera, Jacob, Louise/Matila, Petra/Maud, Thomas, Aldava (or Aldove). With Aldove their is a list of three bands he followed:
Esananaka, Pahoddy, Carpio.

I found one listing on rootsweb with Esananaka which showed Greymountain. Greymountains daughter Juanita married my grandfather Amador Torralba after Petras death (obviously at a young age).

Anyone know the direction I go to find specifics of the relations of the people on this allotment list? For instance was Aldove the father and the rest his family?

Does anyone know where I can find out about the name of those three specific bands?

Thanks so much for your help.

Linda Durham-Grindel

I am looking for any information about the Cache Creek Indian Mission located SW of Apache, OK. It was formed in 1889 by the Reformed Presbyterian Church. The missionary from at least 1899 to 1920 was William Carithers. The mission started the Mission Cemetery located aroung the corner from the mission. It has a white stone arch which says "Comanche Indian Cemetery 1934" on the arch. My interest in the mission and the cemetery stems from my Gr.Gr. Grandmother, Jane Hazelwood and Gr. Grandfather, Pat Maguire who were buried in the Indian cemetery in 1906 and 1907 althought they were not Indian. The story I have is that Jane was involved with the Mission helping the Indian children. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Her husband dug it up, on Indian Mountain, in Wolfforth, TX. She was stupid and did not know, it belonged to her tribe. Bad things happened to her family and she died of a unusal disease. Her husband just died and her son has cancer. Her daughter died from a freak accident. Can someone help us?
My son thinks I am insane but I know Indian tradition. My daughter is Cherokee and we may go out to the pit but I think I need a Sharmam. Please advise....
Sarah Oscie McCracken was a notary public in Oklahoma during the 1901 land rush. I understand that this was in Kiowa and Comanche Country. (now Comanche, Cotton, Tillman, Caddo, Kiowa counties).

Sarah was my grandmother, and I want to know more. I would love to find any documents she notarized, maps, photos, etc but I don't know where to start!

After the Land Rush she returned to Arkansas, married Samuel Reveley, and had 6 children.

Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
I was adopted as an infant. My birth father was 100% apache, but I do not know what band or sub-tribe. For my senior high school project I am trying to find out if it is possible for me to get on tribal roles. Does anyone have any information that might help me where to start?

Soundex code is N540

As any Nunley, Nunnelee, Nunnally etc family researcher knows, this surname spelling can change in each generation or be miss-spelled by census takers, census indexers, and even family members.
Over the past 15 years, I have gathered every record I have ever found on an "N540" but they are pretty much still not identified..........primarily because I kept getting pulled back into researchng my other ancestries.

HOWEVER! My 2005 resolution is to find and identify any and all N540 that lived in the Indian Territories, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and/or Oklahoma Territory before 1930.

Please send me your N540 and together we can reunite these family lines.
Kathye [Payne] Upham

That may help. If anyone knows anything of this, please let me know.

Greetings!

Although my appearance betrays my European ancestry (Pennsylvania Dutch and White Russian), my father’s forbearers included East Woodlands people who were most likely Lenape (a/k/a Delaware). My professional pursuits to date have limited me to my own turf (my PhD in is Pennsylvania studies), I am trying to learn more about the First Americans of the west.

I know that the Navajo and Nide (a/k/a Apache) were Athabascan, just as the native portion of my ancestors were Algonquian. Are the Blackfoot also of Athabascan stock? When I noticed the tortoise totem, which was also the totem of our Unami people, I thought perhaps they might have familial connections with the Algonquians as well, similar to that of the Cheyenne.

I thank you for any contributions to my poor but growing knowledge of the American west.

John

(Dr.) John S.
It has been passed down for several generations how my mothers grandmother was a native american taken from her family and raised by a white family. I have searched her out and found information on her parents (the white family) but when I look them up where her name should be in the list of children I get child female. How can I go about finding out if she is truely a native american. She does look native american in the picture that I saw of her when I was young but I want to know for sure. I want to put proof to our family story and learn all I can about my ancestors and their struggles. I just do not know where to go from here. I do not have her original name just the white name. Susan Mannor (Manure), she married Timothy Vincent.

Known to have lived on reservation (but not sure which) when he was born in 1941. Parents killed and he was placed for adoption. Grandmother tried to adopt @ 1945 but wasn't able. We have no records - just a name. If you can help, please email me. Have sent many requests to KIOWA Nation without response. Thanks much for any help.

My Grandfather was a member of a Tribe in California. "Ben" sent me paperwork that was lost with our belongings in a Military move. I did not know "Ben" well as he and my Grandmother had divorced before I was born. My Father said he was 2nd in line for Chief . He was a Chiricahua,Apache. He had written we belonged to the Rose Bud Sioux. He
listed my 5th Great Grandfather as COCHISE, My 4th Great Grandfather as SITTING BULL and my 4th Great Uncle as GERONIMO. My Father stated that there was a black man taken into the tribe and became a great warrior that is also in my line.I would like to know "Ben's" proper name and what
tribe in California he belonged to . I can find nothing on his parents at all. If you can help me I would deeply appreciate it . This is all the information I was given. I thank you.

Pamela

I am working on my husband's maternal lineage. I have a testimonial from a cousin dated 8/9/92. She interviewed a 1/2 sister of his great grandfather who was 97 at the time of the interview and living in Lawton. I have not been able to verify any of the information and hope there is someone who will respond to this message with information that will help -

Great grandfather was named James K. Polk supposedly born in 1886 in Decator, Texas (from family Bible) to a Mary Potter (aka Mowee Pottaweh). Mary is reported to have been a 16 yr old 1/2 Comanche and 1/2 Cherokee and living with the Wichita tribe. She left her 12 year old son at a Decator, Texas school (supposedly an Indian school) and never returned. The Superientendent of the school was named Williams. James K. Polk remained at the school and was raised by the superintendent and his wife adopting their last name. He is reported to have worked as the Sheriff in Burke Burnett, Texas in the 1930s as well as in the oil fields. He married Alice Bond Williams divorcing in 1934 and remarried with 2nd wife unknown. He and Alice reportedly met at an Indian School hayride.

Am looking for ways to get more information about my family. We are from a family long established in Oklahoma & Arkansas. Parents always told us (my sisters & I) that we are part Scots, part French, part Comanche, and part Cherokee. We were also always told we must not tell anone, or we would not be able to pass for white and get jobs, etc.

My sisters are now 59, and I am 64. Since we were in our late 20's/early 30's, we have been listing our racial information as required by the US gov't as "native american", but we really don't know our history, as our parents always refused to discuss the subject with us.

We are not looking to claim and benefits or assistance. We have all done well in life. (I am a 1967 MPA grad from the University of Oklahoma, and have served as a Director of the Saskatchewan Public Service Commission, founder of the Alberta Ecology Corps, and so on.

Basically, we want to know how to find out more about our Comanche & Cherokee heritages, hopefully some of our specific geneology (if possible...our parents are both deceased), and to become more connected to our people before we die.

Any suggestions as to how to accomplish any of this would be very welcome.

Thank you,
Lloyd de Vore

I am trying to find out about one of my relatives named Quanah Parker Crisp. He shows up about 1880- 1890, on my mothers side. My Great Great Grand Father was Jeff Lindley who was one of the early large ranchers in and around Quanah, Texas. My maternal Grand Mother was Sally Lindley Dunham, born somewhere in southern, Oklahoma. She would not even mention his name are tell us anything about him. You could tell that she had strong Indian blood in her from her features. When I came back from VietNam and got out of the service I had the great priviledge of living and working on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation in Dulce, New Mexico. My best friend and brother [ not from my family ], closer than their are was a Lighting Dancer and Pipe Carrier with the Lakota Sioux. He helped me find peace and understanding of who my true Mother, the earth and true Grand Father are. please help me if you can. Thank You, Jeff Bramblett

Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could verify the meaning of the word Cananea, which is a town in Sonora, Mexico. It was originally established in the 1800's by Apaches and from a Spanish translation from a website it states:

According to data gathered in the place, the Cananea word comes from two voices apaches: " dog " that meat means and " enfa " that horse means.

Cananea is said to mean "horse meat" but there is disagreement on this translation. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Terry

My G-Grandparents were, Albert B. Duncan b-11/1867, TN., & Anna Laroa Piercy, b-05/1877, TX. They were married 11/22/1896 in Indian Territory, Southern District (Oklahoma). At that time they lived in "Hickory." They are listed in the 1900 census, "State: Indian Territory, Country: Chickasaw Nation." I got this info from the Oklahoma Historical Society, just a few days ago. They and their kids are listed as "white," but, my mother says Laroa was an Indian. My father says his mother, Laura Belzora Purves/Purvis b-1881, was an Indian, related to Quanah Parker. Ring any bells? Thanks, Glenn

My Grandfather, dead now more than 25 years left his heritage behind him and went into the world passing himself off as white. I try to understand why he did this, but I don't.

His name was Thomas Kenneth Brown. He died in the '70's at Lake Mead, Boulder City, Nevada, and was a Kiowa - Apache.

If anyone can give me a direction to go to attempt to locate my lineage, I would appreciate it. My children need to know where they came from.... Thanks.
