Kim Smith. Sorry for your stumbling point. I will put her name down and do my best if I can. I myself have a road block. My shortage is with Solomon Quapaw born in 1868 and married twice 1st to Minnie Captain and 2nd Sig-dah Quapaw. Have no idea who his father is, I got this Charley Quapaw Blackhawk age67 in 1903census and a John Quapaw age45census in 1903 too, could they be his father? If you can see also into this much will be appricated. Also your last name is Smith? My great garandfather(Henry Smith) was married to a Nancy Smith and I have nothing further than her. Thanks, Jonathan G. Woods P.S are you sure she noy related to the- Waters?

Hello, I am in need of some help locating information on my family. Rosa or Rosie Rainwater was a member of the Quapaw Tribe, which was part of the Sioux Nation. However I have been unable to locate any information on her. She was married to Ulysses Grant Williams, and had a daughter Bessie Mae Williams in 1896. Ulysses Grant Williams remarried in 1900 (so I can only assume that something happend to Rosie) however I have no proof of this. According to what I can find, Bessie was born in Illionis (MT. Vernon) or at least that is what is noted on the census. It also states that Rosie was born in Indiana. If someone has any information on this please help me out. I have photos of Charlie Rainwater and Jimmie Rainwater not sure what connection they are to Rosie. Thanks,
Kim Smith

The Isaac McCoy that you are referring to is the adopted son of the missionary Isaac McCoy. He and his wife are buried in the Fairview Cemetary in Shawnee, OK. I am the great-grandson of Daniel McCoy, Isaac and Mary (Thorpe) McCoy's son. I am Sac and Fox and Ottowa Indian. I live in Oklahoma and am a member of the Sac and Fox Tribe which was Mary's tribe.

Sorry, I don't have a lot of information on Isaac except his daughter, Rhoda, who married Tom Miles and lived in Shawnee. His wife was Mary. I understand he had a sister that stayed in Franklin County, who died in Kansas City. Isaac McCoy had an allotment in Lincoln County (possibly, I still am researching this, but he was a missionary to the Sac & Fox tribe in Oklahoma, so it makes sense).

Hi, I have been trying to trace the Imbeau side of my family back and have had no luck. Melissa Brewer and Louis Imbeau are on the rolls and are as far as I have been able to get. My family seems to believe that we should go back to Saracen (many different spellings). Saracen was a half-blood chief who's father is belived to be a French soldier named Francois Sarzin. Anyone know anything that could help?

According to an article that I recently read by Kathleen DuVal, Jean Baptiste Duchassin of Arkansas Post(d. aft. 1793)was married to a "Marianne", who was likely Apache(Lipan or Plains Apache). The article is INDIAN INTERMARRIAGE AND mETISSAGE IN COLONIAL LOUISIANA.
Professor DuVal also notes that while a number of French families at Arkansas Post had dealings with the Quapaw and could speak their language, that few if any Frenchmen there had Quapaw wives(Michel Bonne being one exception and his was his second wife, not his first, who was also Lipan or Plains Apache in origin).

Curious to know what the best way to find out who owned land on the West side of Seneca, Missouri. Back then, it was known to be in an Indian Territory, Quapaw Lands.

Since I can not find them on the 1880 Missouri Census and the old farm is West of Seneca, I am going on the theory that Spencer and Nancy Neil (Neal) may have been living in Indian Territory at the time till their death.

Beth
BethHolcomb@cox.net

I am working with newspapers from Stockton California in the 1880's. I came across the following news item I thought someone might be interested in, even for history's sake:

The Stockton Independent, Stockton, Calif.
November 23, 1881

Scar Face Charley
The Lava-Beds Fiend Settles Down
[St. Louis Dispatch]

D. B. Dyer of the Quapaw Agency, Indian Territory, accompanied by D. G. Williams, was in town to-day. My Dyer is well-known as one of the most successful Indian Agents in the employ of the Government, and his Agency is one of the largest and best-managed in the Territory.

“How are your pets getting along?” we asked.

“Very well,” replied Mr. Dyer. “They are taking to civilized ways very rapidly, and are much more tractable than you would think. They all wear citizens’ dress now, and are the most industrious farmers you could imagine.”

“What tribes are stationed with you?”

“The Quapaws, Peorias, Miamis, Otteways, Wyandottes, Senecas, Shawnees and the remnant of the once famed Modocs.”

“How many of the Modoc remain?”

“About one hundred. They are quiet and docile, and are not at all like the fiends of the lava-beds, Scar-faced Charley, Captain Jack’s old partner, is the Chief now, and a better-behaved old farmer could scarcely be found. “The last Agent removed him, but I have him his place again, and his people are pleased. He has settled down, and there is not a more faithful Indian”

“How many acres of land have you under cultivation?”

“Nearly 10,000. We have 1,500 Indians altogether. The Modocs alone attend to 400 acres.”

“What is their condition?”

“Very satisfactory. We have three day and two boarding-schools, the latter accommodating two hundred pupils. The teachers are white ladies and gentlemen, but I have a few Indians employed in that capacity. The old bucks and squaws are very anxious that their children should go to school, and they all appear to like to learn. We have fifteen policemen, and the community is just as orderly as any country settlement. No serious trouble has occurred during the year, and none need be feared.”

“Are the Indians as still mixed as they formerly were on the subject of marriage?”

“That’s the Chief’s trouble. They still have an idea that one wife is scarcely enough, and they cling to the old practice of pu9tting away a wife when they grow tired of her. We are gradually stopping this. If this matter were corrected I should be ready to boast about them.”

To read more about Scar Face Charley, visit this site:
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/tribes/modoc/modocindi...

To read more about the lava-beds, visit this site:
http://www.nps.gov/labe/

I am trying to collect any information concerning Cynthia Davis (b 1809) in Independence Co Arkansas. I have been researching her life, and don't have any information concerning her parents. I realize that the birthdate for her is a keen clue, as she was born in Arkansas prior to white settlers recorded to be living in that part of state. This leads me to believe she must be a Quapaw Indian, (all the territory of the state of Arkansas was held by that tribe at her time of birth.) So far, this is all I have to go on, and if anyone has other information that will help me please do.

She married a man by the name of Holloway Stokes, since she was on the census at 1830 in Jackson Co Arkansas as his wife. Jackson Co banks up to Independence Co, and at her birthdate, may have even been Independence Co.

Cynthia Davis is my gr gr gr grandmother. She was living in Nevada Co, Arkansas by the 1880 census and at 71 she was a midwife.

If this information has any caught your eye, and you could help any with finding out more about her lineage, please email me.

Jeanette
Thanks for the well-wishes-- but after 15 consecutive days of RAIN, none of us are in very good humor-- or shape!

In reply to your questions-- it wasn't until after 1906 that any of the the land in Indian Territory was freed up so that it could (legally) be sold to non-Indians. The reason that people flocked to Indian Territory was that they had heard the stories of plantations with three story brick homes being open to anyone with enough guns to hold them when the land was opened in the old eastern Indian Nations- and were hoping for the same thing here.

But this time the Indians were not being shoved further west-- only that the tribal ownership to the land was being dissolved and ownership was vested in the individual tribal members, which means that "outsiders" no longer needed a government-to-government treaty to transfer title to their land. Since none of these Indians had ever held land in their own names before, in many cases all that it took was a pint of whiskey and two witnesses to an "X" on a piece of paper for the Indian to set his entire family out in the road (it happened!).

Yes- the enrollment list was to the schools that were opened after statehood in 1907.

jc

Jerri,
Thank you so much for the information. I was hoping that you could answer another question. I do not really know anything about Indian affairs and how my ggrandfather would have moved to The Indian territor. Was this land taken from the Indians and Land grants given to Whites? I am so clueless about the Oklahoma history.
on the Gen site link you sent to me there were three books listed. I must try to check in to them.
The list you sent to me had my grandmother and her brother and sisters. Was this an enrollment list to a school.
Thanks again for all your help.
Hope all is well for you
Jeanette

Jean-
Ottawa County has a very good genealogical society and also a website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~okottawa/

In my library I have mostly Indian records, but also "Cemeteries of Ottawa County", and "Early School Records Of Ottawa County"- vol #1- 1912/1915.
The school records shows:
B.
jerri, Thanks for the reply. If you know of any agencies that would have more information on the Grahams or people of the area. (library's in the area?) Could you give me some names of them? My father and his mother moved from the area when he was a teen and they are both gone now, so I cant ask them about the area and what townships or cities are there.

Jeanette
Your document is the Index to the 1900 Indian Territory U.S. census (see attachment below). Line 54 shows the Graham family information (as of 1 June 1900): names, month and year of their birth, their age, how many years married (3), number of children born to this mother (1), where they were born, where their parents were born, occupation, (etc).

On a personal note that I thought was ironic-- in 1946 the census enumerator whose name is shown on that page became MY father-in-law!

Jerri (formerly "Dragoo") Chasteen
Claremore
Jerri,
Thank you. Very educational. I won't show this to dad. It will only make him sad. The family must of had some NA blood somewhere as they used their sweat lodge, ect. But they are marked as white on all census records that I looked at. Hopefully someday, I will be as good at research and knowledgable. Thanks BJ

By the time the Colony post office was established (1896), the area that became Washita County at statehood (1907) was no longer "Indian land".

The land not taken up by the Indians (see http://www.rootsweb.com/~itcheyen/ to learn the difference) was distributed to non Indian emigrants by "Land Run". In fact, John Seger had established "a colony" of these non Indian emigrants (mostly German) in that area, which was the source of the name.

Colony was located in the northeastern section to Washita County. If you will click on the map at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cherokee/okmap.htm and locate Washita County (white area), then look at the relationship of that area to the red area of the map (old Cherokee Nation) you will see how mistaken your father was. Washita was in the area designated as "Oklahoma Territory"- and the Cherokee Nation had been in "Indian Territory". If there were Indians still in that area in 1940, they would have most likely been either Cheyenne or Arapaho.

Jerri Chasteen
Claremore
Forgive me for being so forward, you seem to know ao much about Indian territory and dates. my father is so positive that he lived on Cherokee lands in the 1940's. He is nearly 80, but says that he thinks it was near or in a little place called Colony, Ok. His sibblings are all gone and he says his grandmother told him they were Cherokee. Any help with this are would be much appreciated. The family lines are Stephenson and Wilkins of Ok.,Tx and Carolinas. Thank you, BJ

My Great Grandma was said to be a Quapaw, 100%. She married an Irishman named Harrington..They lived in Missouri and I am wondering how to get info on her family..MY only living relative that has information, will not part with any,He told me that he did not wish for any of us to lay any claims against the tribe etc..I do not have intention or desire for anything other than some kind of history that I can share with my kids and grandkids..I am still trying to find her maiden name form some of our old documents..so far not so good, other that she lived to be 107.....So guess I am looking for Harringtons that might know something....will post more as I find it....kinda vague right now..sorry
