If your ancestors are not on the Dawes Rolls but you knew they were Indian; the Choctaw Plantation Slave Holding Indians of Ms. and parts of Ala. were given a choice that they could stay in their homeland if they got off of the rolls; they wound up losing their land anyway. There were 5 families and Chiefs who are listed in the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit BUT there are many Indian (White names also but Indians) who are listed in the treaty. These are called the Armstrong Rolls. The are available on microfilm through the Nat.l Archives and also through AGLL probably, the local library's American Geneological Lending Library, I think.
They are also in a book compiled by Betty Wiltshire Cox : "Choctaw and Chickasaw Early Census Record" and you can request a lookup, 3 at a time, from Salt Lake City (SLC) and put on the envelope "attn.: Dawne Hole" as this gal searched for 2 days for this old Texas gal and found it! The address is: Correspondence c/o Family History Library / Attn. Dawne Hole / 35 N.W. Temple St. / Salt Lake City / Utah 84150
Found my ggggrfa in it but he was from Claiborne Co. Ms. although Port Gibson (which is the county seat of Claiborne Co. and where the family lived) was at one time the Capitol of the Choctaw Nation. frances P.S. If you don't mind list mgr. please post this under Choctaw also.
