We have been cleaning out old pictures at Grandma's again...she is still in good health for almost 95, for those of you who are wondering. (Betty Gaynell Sweeten Poole, b. 1907) I would love to give these to descendents of those photographed. Names I have found this time:Dessie Parish, Sol Notubbie, Grover Nored, Dolly and Vivian Lax, Helen and Jackie Skaggs , Mrs. Anderson Indian Friend, Anna Pearl R. Elizabeth Mershon and Pauline Masterson in the same picture, Hershel and Hubert Smith, Percy Benham (?), Lilly Lester's girl, Harvey Heart, James Harlgrobs (?) from Antlers, George Purtoff and wife, Gorden Wright, Oscar Willingham's kid, James Dale Artre, and the Robinson family, George, Cora, Voyd, and Doyle. Most of these would be from the Moyers area between 1907 and 1940. Please e mail me only if you are descended from (or you are) any of these people. I don't know anything about their genealogy except Parrish and Lester , so please don't ask, but would love to find homes for these pictures.

Hello Pushmataha Board,

I am looking for a grave site for John Wesley Bright and other family of his, as J. W. died in Antlers OK on Feb. 19th 1906. I am also wondering if there might be an obiturary in the local newspaper of 1906? Was there a newspaper being published in the county at that time?

John had moved to Okalahoma after his wife died in Lamar County Texas in 1904. I am thinking that maybe he went to stay with one of his children. He was a Ccivil War veteran.

Thank you. Dorothea

My name is Billy Sanders I graduated from antlers HIgh school in 1960. Basically all my roots are in that part of the country. However I did not know this until I started the Family search. I grew up in a little place called Calhoun, Okla in the forties and fifties and went to school there for 8 years . the school only went to the 8th grade and then the highschoolers were bused to Panama. I missed that ride because my parents moved to Howe Ok for 2years and I finished highschool then after we moved to Antlers. We did not know there was a world out there. most of us in Calhoun did not go much of anywhere until we got grown. any way back to my search I am interesting in finding out all about Mary Phillips Impson amd Josh Impson and the Phillips that live there. My younger sister Edna married Ed Neese back in 1961 and I would love to make contac with someone who knows her children. I would love to hear from them any one with any info can E-mail me direct at itybtyblu@att.net Thanks and Happy Huntin Blu
She is buried in Antlers Cemetery.

Born: 3 Oct 1877 in Texas
Died: 15 May 1966 in Antlers, Pushmataha, Oklahoma

I would like very much to get a copy of the obit & perhaps any other leads. It appears she spent most of her life in Antlers so I'm guessing there should at the least be an obit & maybe a church reference.

I am seeking information on the death of Mollie (Bishop) Jones born Sept. 30, 1871, in Harpersville Shelby County AL. Her parents were Joseph B. and Mary (Partridge) Bishop. With her parents, Mollie moved to Parker County Texas and sometimes Pushmataha County OK. Mollie married Andrew Clarence Jones born abt 1873 in Snow Hill Wilcox County AL. His family had moved to Bazett and Kerns in Navarro County Texas about 1878. Clarence and Mollie moved back to Spearman Shelby County AL about 1887. They had five children (see attached census). Mollie reportedly passed away in Rattan Pushmataha County OK but I do not have a date or place of burial. Before her death, their children were placed in the custody of Mollie's sisters who were living in Texas -- I have attached the file for two younger daughters placed in the care of Roxie, her sister whose last name changed to Freeman. Any information would help. Thank you very much.

The Oklahoman
09-17-1905
p.3/14

VICTIM'S BODY IS PLACED ON TRACKS

Telegraph Operator at Antlers Slugged and Office Is Robbed

ANTLERS, Okla., Sept.16-(Special)-

While Pat Hearn, night telegraph operator at the Frisco railroad
depot, was alone in the depot early Thursday morning two young
men came to the depot to have some trunks checked. When Hearn
went to check the trunks he was hit on the head with a blunt
instrument. He fell to the ground and the robbers placed his
body across the railroad track. Hearn partially regained
consciousness and crawled off the track and onto a truck where
he sank into an unconscious condition. In the meantime the
robbers ransacked the ticket office. They secured $21.70.

A passenger train arrived and when the members of the train
crew went to the depot they found Hearn lying on a truck
almost dead. The robbers made their escape and went toward
Atoka.

Sheriff Wilson and a posse are pursuing the robbers and are
close on their trail. The posse found where the robbers
secured breakfast Thursday morning. Hearn is in a critical
condition and was taken to a Paris, Texas hospital Thursday
afternoon.

***posted for genealogical purposes only; no relation***

I have two photos taken professionally of students in front of their school with their teachers. The school is a very impressive large brick building. It may not be the Clayton school, but I feel fairly certain it is in Pushmataha county. If anyone is compiling a photo history of the area I could make you a copy.

What was the economy in Pushmataha county based on in the 1920's? My father spent his boyhood there, and I am curious about what life was like at that time. Were there lumber mills there? What kind of mining was done there? Does it continue?

I am searching for more information on 3 of my great grandparents that are buried in Pushmataha County. My great grandparents, James M and Sarah Catherine "Cat" Ashley are buried at Antlers City Cemetery. Jim and Cat moved from Jackson Co., AL in 1879 to AR. They lived in Hot Springs County until they moved in 1910 to OK, first to Hughes Co, Jim d. in 1926 and Cat died in 1948, at the age of 93. I know some of their children lived and died there.

My great grandfather, Ezekiel Cherry Crisp died Dec. 31, 1922 and is buried in Jumbo Cemetery, along with his daughter Evelena (Lena)son, William Mansil, and a couple of baby grandchildren. Any info, or any "new Cousins" related to these folks, would be great!

Sacred Harp in Pushmataha County?

I'm not sure if this type of query goes on here, since it appears to be primarily a genealogical board. But I couldn't find any other boards for asking county-related questions. So here goes:

Last night at a local church singing, my Dad and I sang a duet using a song from the Sacred Harp (an old a cappella shape note song book). After the singing, a man from one of the churches initiated a conversation with me about Sacred Harp singing. I soon found that he had grown up in Antlers, OK, and remembered attending some Sacred Harp singings in the area. As a young man he moved away in the 1950s. From the discussion, I found that he remembered attending singings in Rattan and Cloudy (Pushmataha Co.) and Broken Bow (McCurtainCo.). He thought the singings were held in Baptist churches in these places. He did not think any were held in Antlers. These singings were evidently still being conducted as late as the 50s. I would like to collect historical information about these singings and the people who sang at them.

Does anyone have any information, memories or contacts on this? Thanks.

Robert Vaughn

I have just located cemetery records for William Edgar, 1866-1931, and his wife Ella Edgar, 1886-1953 in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. Ruby Edgar Vandagriff 1912-2000 is buried in the same cemetery with her husband Clarence Allen Vandagriff, 1904-1980. William and Ella Edgar had 4 daughters that I know of; Thelma, Ruby, Stella and Ruth and I believe they were all born in TX. I have very little info on this William Edgar family, however I believe he was born KY or TN and I would like to talk and share info with anyone out there that knows of this family.

Pushmataha County Historical Society needs your help. We are gathering photographs of school buildings, names of teachers, photographs of school groups, memories and history of early day schools. Due to the court house fire in 1933, the county court house has dependent school teacher lists beginning with the 1932-1933 school year until they were consolidated. Independent and consolidated schools kept their own records.A newspaper search is underway for names of teachers but will be incomplete as they are only sometimes mentioned. If you know who taught where and when, please let us know. You may send us copies of photographs at PCHS, P.O.Box 285, Antlers, OK 74523; email a scan to me at the above email, or drop by the Depot on the second Tuesday and I'll scan your photo. Your help is most appreciated. We hope to have this book done this next year for Oklahoma's 100th birthday. Thank you for your help.

His Creel family lived north of Cloudy and they went to visit Grandma and Grandpa Stephens when they lived on the "Old Adams Place at the foot of a mountain." Would anyone know where the "Old Adams Place" was located and who was this Adams family? Thanks, Etta Stephens Withers

For those interested in the surnames above, who were originally from Lamar and/or Red River County, Texas before living in Pushmataha County, you may be interested to know about a book published in 2000, which contains info about these various families, among many others. One of the others is Freeman, one of whom married a Simpson, and the Simpson couple lived in Pushmataha Co. The book is an area history -- covering an area in Lamar and Red River counties in TX and these, and possibly others had connections to Pushmataha County. If interested, I can give you the website showing the names listed in this book.

Latimer and Pushmataha gravesites for Logan

Mary Susan (McBride) Logan, b Dec 1851 in Arkansas, disappeared from the census after 1920. At the time she and husband, William E. (b. 10 Dec 1848, MO), were listed in Buffalo township, Latimer Co, OK. William moved to Albion, Pushmataha, some time between then and 1930, as that is where he lived as a widower. We have been unable to locate any information on their deaths or burials. We have checked for death certificates at the State, consulted with a professional genealogist in the area, and searched the Genweb and other cemetery sites as well as we could. Since we haven't located William in Pushmataha, we think there's a possibility that he could have been taken back to Latimer to be buried near Mary.

In hopes that some one on this list is a "cousin," or an intrepid hunter who may have seen one or both of them, or may have yet another suggestion. Thanks.

Susan & John Logan, Maryland
joyfulrev@sbcglobal.net

FITZGERALD, ROBBINS, KISTLER

I'm searching for info on my g-g-grandmother, Martha Josephine FITZGERALD. She was in the Pushmataha Co. 1910 census of Antlers living with her son Robert D. FITZGERALD (38), his wife Lola B. (33), & their children Alfred (14), Luther D. (13), & Walter Dall (6). She was the 69 year old widow of Alfred McElroy FITZGERALD w/her own income (maybe a Civil War Pension) & was born in North Carolina. Her maiden name was KISTLER. Her children had all been born in Mississippi & Texas. I've found a photo of her daughter Sarah "Maggie" Margaret FITZGERALD (Mrs. Wiley ROBBINS) standing by a 4 ft tall grave monument that read, as far as I can tell, Martha FITZGERALD April 10, 1848 to Sept. 2, 1914. I think it might have been taken in the 1930's. I suspect she died in or near Antlers & would love to be able to confirm it. Robert's family was in Finley in the 1920 census w/out her, of course. I've not been able to find them in the 1900 Indian Territory census although all of Martha's other children & their families were in Coalgate in the future Coal County and Atoka County, OK. I believe they may have lived in Love County, OK for a while in the 1890s.
I'd be very interested in finding out more about Robert's family, too. In 1920, Robert's son Alfred (24) was newly married to Jenne (16) & living 2 families away from his parents in Finley. Thank you.

Valentines Day in Moyers

Since the February postings seem to be lost right now, I am going to tell you again about Valentines Day in Moyers, Pushmataha County, OK . This information is from my grandmother, Betty Gaynell Sweeten Poole. She was born in Kasoma in 1907 and will be 94 in April of this year (2001). She said, "We used to have big Valentines parties at school. We'd bring cookies. We made some Valentines, we bought some. We sent them to each other, mostly to the people you liked. We made them in school. we spent most of an afternoon. Red hearts, mostly. We always decorated our classrooms. If you had a sweetheart, you'd always give him one, and he'd give you a pretty one. Mama would go into Antlers and bring 'em home and put'em on the table, and we'd fight over 'em. (She means with her siblings.) It was mostly for children. My parents didn't give each other Valentines." Then she told me about the Valentines Dances at the school, especially after the brick school was built. All the teenagers went, and all the adults and famlies, too. "We used to have fiddlers, men 'round the country. They played the fiddle. They used to play for dances. We took all the kids. They'd have cake and coffee and cookies. Mama would make heart cookies and decorate them with red frosting. We'd dress up in our Sunday best." I pointed that Valentines Day is in February and it must have been cold going out in your party dress. She let me know that their Sunday best was "not nekkid like the girls now!" It included ruffles and high necks and long sleeves and skirts, all on outfits made by her mother. If your family lived in Moyers, they probably went to these dances and ate my great grandmother's heart cookies with red frosting!
I am looking for information about Henry M. King born in GA abt 1865.
He was married to Daisy/Daisie Elmore. They had 5 Children: Jewel, Lizzie, John, Bert, and Mary Ann.
I have found the family on the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census. After 1900 Daisy seems to have moved to Haskell Co and taken a job as a servent. Henry worked int he sawmill and the kids are with him.
Sometime between 1900 and 1910 Jewell disapears and Mary Ann is born (Nov 29, 1907) Mary Ann is my grandmother. The family on her side is all gone. My uncle didn't know anything about her side of the family.
The 1930 census isn't loaded on heritage quest yet for OK so I am unsure what happened between 1920 and 1930.
I cannot find a death record of Henry M King. Mary Ann marries John Pfeffer possibly OK. This is her second marriage. Her first marriage is to a Whitney?
There is a family story that Mary Ann was part Indian, but I cannot confirm this through census records as they list her as white and her parents are white. I am wondering if the mystery lies with my great-grandmother Daisy leaving the family between 1900-1910. Also Mary Ann was born in McCurtain, Haskell, OK but she lived in Pushmataha co. Daisy is in Haskell Co. I am wondering if perhaps Daisy had an affair with an Indian and took off, had Mary ann, then sent Mary to live with Henry and siblings.
Thank you for any help you can give me.
Cindy Johnson
Timothy (b 1888, in Arkansas, d. 1971 in Clayton, Pushmataha, OK) is buried next to his second wife,
Lela (Moore) Logan in Al Stephens Cemetery.

His first wife was Lula Bell Moreland, and she was alive
in 1931. We believe that she died and he married Lela
between 1931 and 1934.

Any help in finding Lula Bell Logans burial place would be
appreciated.

Susan Trapnell-Logan
Obit / info William Ellis 1860 AR - 4/18/1920 Antlers, Pushmataha Co, OK

I am looking for an obit for William Ellis, died 18 Apr 1920, I believe in Antlers. He was born 1860 somewhere in AR. Any help or ideas will be much appreciated.

According to LDS Pedigree Resource File William Ellis was son of Isaac Ellis (1836-1892?) and Sarah Starnes (1833-1929).

He married Aubie Camp in 1898 in Lamar Co, TX. She was born abt 1878 in MS (possibly Tuppelo, Lee Co, MS). I am also trying to find out when she died. Did she remarry? Did she have children with William Ellis?

My husband's uncle (also a Camp) is in his 80's and remembers his Aunt Aubie and that she lived in Antlers, but doesn't know when she died. He believes that William Ellis was a trader, and was in and around Antlers from the early 1900s or before.

Are there any cemetery books for Antlers? Does anyone know where these people are buried?

Thank you for any replies and information.
