I was interested in finding a young Webb man born about 1907 plus or minus of Indian heritage in Payne County Oklahoma that lived in Kansas City Mo or Kansas in Dec of 1933. I thought maybe he could have been from the Otoe tribe of Oklahoma so I was interested in his history. Thanks, Peg

Hi - was able to get to Perry (Walnut twp was transferred to Noble County in 1907) county seat. I began with the beginning and checked the marriage records first for Benjamin F. - none.
then to the library there and looked thru the funeral home
records - no Johnson in 1900. They are by year so started
with first record in 1898 thru 1905 - no luck. rechecked
their records for the Cemeteries - Grace Hill in town and
Fairview and Shelton, both near Walnut twp. no luck.
Another possible place would be Guthrie, county seat of
Logan. It is probably 12 miles So of Walnut twp., still
closer than Stillwater. If I get there to see a cousin
soon, will check their records.
theo
Because I wasn't satisfied with what I'd found, or not found, I went to our newspaper files for that time, and found the marriage notice. However the paper spelled her
last name Uland, Etta Uland, not Vland. Using that, I found an Etta Johnson buried in Zion Cemetery, Cushing. I
next went to the 1900 census, and found Ulands in Cushing,
with a B. F. Johnson, 21, stepbrother and A. E. Uland, living with their parent/s.
Walnut township is clear across the county from Cushing,
and your B. F. (also 21) is indeed living - with probably his sister - next door to his brother. Walnut township is
closer to Perry, in Noble County, than Stillwater, Payne Co.
I checked what records I could but nothing. I suggest you
write to Noble Co for help on this. If I get to Perry in
the meantime I'll check their files also.
Re Dorothy Van Vraken Johnson, again she'd be buried closer
to Walnut township - but have found no record on line. I
did check Perry Cemetery, Grace Hill, and nothing on line.
Going directly to the Cemetery records would be best. Hope
fully Noble Co Genealogy group can help.
Believe we've eliminated some things. theo

To bring you up to date with what I've found - negatives, but still important. Payne Co does not have a list of its
sheriffs - that I cannot believe. But have checked where
they ought to be and nothing. I can go thru old minutes of
the court (3rd floor, courthouse annex) but need to leave
that until Jan and then I'll see if I can manage it. I went
to Ripley, but nothing - the PO and Police seem to be the town. I did learn that there was an elected Sheriff for the county, and each (most?) towns had a Marshall. This person could function as a Sheriff if necessary; he was paid by the County as a Sheriff for whatever work he had
done (arrest, usually). But I couldn't find town officers for Ripley. lots of dead ends.
Talked to an 'old-timer' who thought she remembered
her Aunt talking of a Ferguson girl she went to school with, but no particulars. I went on to the Cushing Library
which is closer to Ripley than Stillwater, altho all Payne
Co. Went thru many files, and nothing. I checked marriage records for Payne and Lincoln co's (so far) but nothing
for Flora or Jessie. Logan would be my next choice.
Will go to our library next Tues and should have time to
get the obits for Theo & Emma. would you send me your email and I'll send copies of them. theo (tmyoast@yahoo.com)

I checked the 1900 census and the Ferguson's lived in Paradise township - and are buried in the Marena Cemetery. Those two facts tell me the Harmony church must be the Methodist church in Marena - disbanded before late 1920's. Marena was a thriving little town in the early days of Payne Co. I'm not sure when the PO was closed. Will check in the Marena book at the library today to see if it was ever called Harmony by that writer, but feel confident that is the church. It would have been located at the junction of the present day roads of 44th and Hackelman or Karsten Creek. Today a lot of that surrounding land is owned by Oklahoma State University. I believe the church was on the NW corner. More later. theo

Theo, Thank you for the look ups. If you find an obit of Theodore or any more info about him being a sheriff, I would
greatly appreciate it.
Theodore Sheridan FERGUSON (31 Oct 1869-24 Mar 1945) and his wife, Mary Emma PUGH, (9 Apr 1872-3 Mar 1948) are both buried in Ripley Oak Park Cemetery, according to Find A Grave.

Brightstarr, "H. FERGUSON" is probably Samuel H. FERGUSON. The CW regiment on the gravestone corresponds with census records and other info for Sam. This is the same info as on Find A Grave. You referenced mathematical.com, Dean Pruitt's website. He's a descendant of Theodore and Mary PUGH. Dean sent me a copy of an article from the Stillwater Eagle Gazette dated 19 Jan 1894 which reports the suicide of a "Mr. Ferguson" in Plumb in eastern Payne Co. Names of family members were not given. The dates are also consistent with the gravestone dates.

Margaret Ann HUGHES was Samuel H.'s 2nd wife. The info for her on Find A Grave includes info about her parents and husbands that apparently aren't on the stone. I corresponded with the poster of that info. She said she obtained the family data from cemetery and funeral home records.

Theo, as long as you're researching, maybe you could resolve another question. Margaret FERGUSON is listed in the 1900 census in Payne Co. with a granddaughter, Jesse M. FERGUSON. I suspect Jesse may be the daughter of Flora D., daughter of Margaret and Sam. Can you find anything about them?

If anyone has access to, or has seen, Samuel H. FERGUSON's Civil War pension file, some of these questions may be answered there.

Again, thank you all for your help.

John S.
I volunteer weekly at the Stillwater Public Library in the Genealogy room and today had an opportunity to look for
answers to your questions. I found what you had, Margaret 'Martha' is bur at Ripley's Oak Park Cemetery, but in the Ripley Funeral Home there is no listing for Samuel.
I got half way thru the weekly newspaper in 1894 for Stillwater area but no mention of Samuel. Will continue
next week and finish the year - hopefully will be a notice
in the paper about him. So far I've not located a listing
of Sheriff's for Payne Co - that also I'll work on next
week. Can also get obit for Theodore - should tell more.
theo

Looking for any info on descendants of Samuel H. FERGUSON, b. 1836 in TN, d. 1894 in Payne Co, supposedly by suicide. His son, Theodore, 1869-1945, is said on several websites to have been a sheriff in Ripley. I haven't found any documentation of this. All censuses show Theodore to be a farmer or farm laborer. Does anyone have a list of Payne Co sheriffs?

Sam and his wife, Margaret (HUGHS/HUGHES), are buried in Ripley, according to Find A Grave.

Any help appreciated.

John S.
Thank you so much Carol!
This is what I was looking for. :)

My dad always told me his grandpa (Elonzo) had left his grandma (Nancy) and the kids and they moved to Oregon, and nobody knew what happened to him.
I have been helping with indexing the 1940 census, and found Elonzo in 1940 still with grandma Nancy and my grandpa Cecil living next door.
So the family tale was wrong, or they were talking about Elonzo's dad, whom I still haven't been able to find.

Again, thank you. I do appreciate your time. :)

I have been also helping on Find A Grave. So hopefully I am helping someone as much as you have helped me.

Chris

Searching for any information regarding Earl Taylor Fairchilds 7/7/17-5/1/1993 service in the US Army! Enlisted out of OKC,OK 9/14/1942 discharged 10/1945 Rank listed as Immaterial branch warrent officer. Earl was the son of Bertram H. Fairchild and Olive Miranda (Taylor) Fairchild, was living in Montgomery Cnty, KS at the time of enlistment. Grew up in Enid where I believe he graduated from college. In 1946 he married the love of his life Mary "Eleanor" Fairchild of Bishop, Tx a school teacher with a masters from Baylor Univ. After living in different areas like Chorpus Christi, Tx and Tulsa, OK for a while they settled on a beautiful farm 5 mi. north of Ripley, OK on HWY 108 known to everyone around as the Fairchild Farm with the well known Fairchild Pond that was always open to anyone wanting to go fishin' They remained there until Earl's death in 1993 and then in 2003 Eleanor finally sold the property to move closer to town. I would really like to know if anyone can tell me what company he would've been in and what his roll would've been while stationed overseas? I know that at some point during his enlistment he was either stationed or passing through Egypt with his troops as I have a picture of him and 2 other soldiers all in uniform sitting on camels right in front of the sphinx. Also, looking 4 any and all info so if you have anything besides service plz send! thanks!

Below is Earl's enlistment record found on ancestry
ARMY SERIAL NUMBER 38268941 38268941
NAME FAIRCHILD#EARL#T######## FAIRCHILD#EARL#T########
RESIDENCE: STATE 73 KANSAS
RESIDENCE: COUNTY 125 MONTGOMERY
PLACE OF ENLISTMENT 8459 OKLAHOMA CITY OKLAHOMA
DATE OF ENLISTMENT DAY 14 14
DATE OF ENLISTMENT MONTH 09 09
DATE OF ENLISTMENT YEAR 42 42
GRADE: ALPHA DESIGNATION PV3# Undefined Code
GRADE: CODE 8 Private
BRANCH: ALPHA DESIGNATION BI# Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA
BRANCH: CODE 00 Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA
FIELD USE AS DESIRED # #
TERM OF ENLISTMENT 5 Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law
LONGEVITY ### ###
SOURCE OF ARMY PERSONNEL 4 National Guard in Federal Service, after 3 months of Discharge
NATIVITY 84 OKLAHOMA
YEAR OF BIRTH 17 17
RACE AND CITIZENSHIP 1 White, citizen
EDUCATION 5 1 year of college
CIVILIAN OCCUPATION 594 Foremen, construction
MARITAL STATUS 6 Single, without dependents
COMPONENT OF THE ARMY 7 Selectees (Enlisted Men)
CARD NUMBER # #
BOX NUMBER 1312 1312
FILM REEL NUMBER 6.78# 6.78#

I am a (new) volunteer in the Genealogy Room at the Stillwater Public Library. I did find James B. Hamilton
b 6/20/1897 d 5/18/1950, bur in Fairlawn Cemetery, Cushing.
I checked the Stillwater newspaper for an obit for 1 week
following the date of death with no results. We do not have
the Cushing newspaper on microfilm in our library; I suggest
you contact the Cushing library for a search.

Thank you so much for your help.

I don't believe that is the correct listing as Georgia is in the 1930 census with A. L. Kimple:

1930 Payne Co. Oklahoma Census; Source Citation: Year: 1930; Census Place: Henry, Payne, Oklahoma; Roll: 1925; Page: 7B; Enumeration District: 17; Image: 377.0. Ancestry.com census Images; 151 / 155
Lane A. Kimple, 69, age 25 at 1st marriage, IoPaIL, farmer; Georgianna, wife, 58, -- at 1st marriage, MoVaMo

So he is not the one who died in 1918.

I appreciate your help.
Karen

I found out about Theodore "Toby" through an obit that I found. I was the one who actually set up his memorial on findagrave. I have recently run across a lot of information on the Greene family, except I can't find out what happened to Theordore Greene, Jr.... son of Toby. Nor have I been successful with Eva Maude Greene. I really appreciate all of your help.

Robert

Thank you for your help. :)

I will take your suggestion and write the libraries to see if they may have information.

I put in the request for a picture of the headstone for him, and a volunteer found and photographed it for me. The picture is of him and my great-grandmother. I also asked them if maybe his new wife was buried next to him.

Again, thank you for your time and response!
I am a volunteer in the genealogy room of the Stillwater
Public Library. I could find nothing in Payne Co. Another
source I use for myself is findagrave.com. There is a J. W. Underhill d 12/11/1897 bur in Cashion Cemetery, Cashion,
Kingfisher Co OK. The stone shows he was 35 yrs, 6 mo.s and 26 das old. Also that his wife was Daisy. Could this
be yours? theo

I am a volunteer in the genealogy room of Stillwater Public Library. There was no obit in the Stillwater NewsPress for
that date nor the following week. I suggest you write the
Cushing Public Library, or even the Yale Public Library to
see if either one has Cushing newspapers for that time period. I did go to findagrave.com and he is listed there,
with a picture of he and a woman.

The Yale Cemetery is called the Lawson Cemetery - it lists
Georgia Anna Kimmel b 1869 d 8-15-1956, wife of A. L. Kimmel
d 10-31-1918 and in the book, it says, in parenthesis (last
name may be Kimple). Sometimes the person copying the name
from the tombstone misreads it, for whatever reason. Perhaps that is the explanation here. I just spotted the kimmel group as it was only 4-5 lines above where kimple would have been. I suggest you write the Yale Public Library, as they have a genealogy room and might have records for their area that we do not have.
