The family tale is his parents were married in Oklahoma their names were Edward Morrison and Martha "Mattie" Dickens. They moved to Ky or Ohio from there. I am guessing Edward had siblings in Oklahoma or maybe uncles, I am back to 1745 with my tree, originating from Isle of Lewis but I am missing alot of siblings along the way, so maybe someone has a match. I have looked and looked but canot find any recources for records in Oklahoma. Thanks for any help!

Hello, Folks! My name's Ralph Barlow ... and my Grandpa's name was also Ralph Barlow. He was a manual training teacher and track coach at Okmulgee High School back around the early 1900's.

I remember very fondly many visits to Okmulgee for Christmas, or a summer vacation. My Grandpa Ralph passed away in 1957, but my Grandma Hazel lived a good many more years in their home in Okmulgee.

Does anyone on this chat site remember the Barlow name in Okmulgee? My grandparents were also friends of Mr. & Mrs. Fenton Watson, and Mrs. Reba Fallon, and they were members of the Methodist Church.

I am looking for information on Charles Ehrlich, born abt. 1888, or his wife Nora(h) McPherson Carter Ehrlich, born abt. 1890. Nora was my great-great-grandmother.

According to the census, Charles and Nora lived in Hartshorne, Oklahoma in 1920. A letter from Nora's son-in-law states that they later moved to Henryetta, likely just before November 1927, when Nora died.

If anyone knows of a resource that might list the date and location of Nora's or Charles's deaths, I would be grateful.

I am researching Rebecca CAMPBELL mother of Margaret DAVIS. The Davis family moved to Morris, Okmulgee, OK probably around 1920. They owned a five and dime there.
Rebecca CAMPBELL died in Morris in 1930 and was buried in the Sand Springs Cemetery. Would like to have the death date and burial place of Margaret DAVIS. Margaret was the wife of Charles W. DAVIS. Margaret and Charles had at least two children, James and Lela. I also have information to share. Thank-you, Pam.

Most people doing research in the Okmulgee, Hughes and McIntosh counties don't realize that depending on the year depends on what county your family actually lived in. Hoffman was at one time part of McIntosh County but later became part of Okmulgee County.

Township 9N Range 13E, and the portion of Twp 8N Rng 13E north of the South Canadian River were originally part of Hughes county, but were annexed by McIntosh county on Aug. 27, 1914.

The western half of Township 12N Range 14E became a part of Okmulgee County in 1919

So Hanna and and Hanna Township appear in the 1910 census of Hughes County, but in McIntosh County in the 1920 census and later years.

And a portion of the 1910 census of McDaniel Twp of McIntosh County
(including the towns of Grayson and Hoffman) is located in Okmulgee County in the 1920 census and in later census years.

Thanks to the hard work of Cassandra Martin I am updating the Hoffman cemetery page with photo of headstones and a cemetery Survey. Cassandra did this in memory of Susan Emma Bennefield. There are photos and more family info on Susan Emma Bennefield on the Cemetery page and on the McIntosh and Okmulgee county websites. I want to thank her publicly for all of her hard work.

I would like to invite anyone in McIntosh, Haskell or Okmulgee counties to to do a cemetery survey in memory of their family or loved one.

If you have any names or photo to add to the Hoffman or any cemetery in the above counties please feel free to email them to me at leeshlynch@gmail.com.

Thanks
Shelley
I am searching for information on my grandmother's family. My great grandfather, George Hoffman APGAR and his wife Mollie TERRELL APGAR were living in Okmulgee Co. in 1916. This is the earliest date I can document. They were originally from Crawford Co, IL. I believe they followed mollie's parents Benjamin F TERRELL and his wife Emily Weger TERRELL. In 1913 George and Mollie's daughter married William Crosby in Okmulgee Co. In 1917 George and Mollie's daughter Edith APGAR married Fred Beebe in Creek Co. In 1939 Charlie TERRELL, Mollie's brother was in Muskogee Co. If any of these names ae familiar, please email me. Thanks
Louisiana French Creoles in Indian Territory

Between the years of 1900 and 1915, hundreds if not thousands of French Creoles migrated to Indian Territory, Oklahoma. You have a huge population of them in Oklmulgee County. You will find them living in areas such as: Bald Hill, Grayson, Hamilton, and Schulter.

Names Like:

Carriere
Fontenot
Guillory
Holmes
LaChapelle
LaCour
Lartigue
LaToure
LaViolette
LeBlanc
Ledoux
Manuel
Papillon
Thierry

Most of the above names have faded out or away, some got caught up in the Indian Nations.

What made these French Creoles migrated to Indian Territory, Oklahoma, who knows, but they did come.
His father died in Okmulgee County (reportedly of Black Lung disease) around 1900 or before. I am uncertain as to the father's given name but think it may have been LLoyd. His last child, LLoyd McKelvey, was born after his father's death. Mr. McKelvey's wife was Lutitia (Dean) McKelvey. They had five sons; Malcolm, Jesse LaVann, Emerson, Irving, Lloyd, and one daughter, Maude.

Mr. McKelvey and Lutitia were married in Roxton, Texas in 1884 (approx.) and moved to Okmulgee County sometime after that and were still there in 1900.

Any information as to birth or death records of this family? Lutitia McKelvey married Harve Henderson Ledbetter in 1901 (approx.) Record of the marriage?

POW/MIA Korean War, Okmulgee Co. WARMBRODT, JOHNSON

I am searching for the family of two soldiers who was killed in the Korea War. When they entered service they gave Okmulgee County, Oklahoma as their home of record.

Soldier: JACOB HAROLD WARMBRODT
Born: 1921
Date of loss: October 20, 1952

Soldier: JOHN E JOHNSON
Born: !914
Date of loss: July 12, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 45 families from Oklahoma that have not been located. There are two families from Okmulgee County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find these families. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating these families.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
I am trying to find information on the family of Schuyler SPURRIER and Dane (BENNETT) SPURRIER. They had 2 daughters, one was Schuyleen (Spurrier) TUTT and the other was Luane (Spurrier) CASTIN. Any information on them would be appreciated. I know that Schuyleen died in 2003 and that her father died in September 1971. Luane died between 1972-2003. The only one that I know lived in Okmulgee was Schuyler Spurrier. Are there any books on the local cemeteries? If so, would someone please look and see if you can find any of the above mentioned people? I know that Schuyleen was buried in the Memorial Park Cemetery, but I don't know if that cemetery is located in Tulsa or in Okmulgee county. Thank you so much in advance for your help.

I am trying to get some info on these Crawford Brothers---obits etc.

>Beggs Cemetery, Beggs, Okmulgee Cty, Oklahoma Crawford, Tommy O., B
>4-11-1910 D 1-28-1929(19yrs) (Beggs Cemetery is located on Hwy 16 on
>the west side of Beggs, Oklahoma.
>It is approximately 4.4 miles from Hwy 75 and Hwy 16. It is a very well
>maintained Cemetery with gravel roads.) ==============================
>Arkansas Death Index, 1914-1950
>Name: Thomas Jun Crawford
>Death Day: 29
>Death Month: Jan
>Death Year: 1929
>County: Washington
>Roll Number: 19241933
>(Jun must have stood for Junior)
>===================================
>Student Suicide
>TOM O. CRAWFORD
> BEGGS, Feb. 2- Services for Tom O. Crawford, 19-year-old junior in
>the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, whose body was found late
>Thursday in a field four miles from the university campus with a bullet
>wound in the head, will be held here Sunday at 3 p.m., from the First
>Baptist Church, with the pastor, the Rev. J. W. Isms, in charge. Burial
>will be in the Beggs Cemetery.
> While the Fayetteville coroner reported the death as a suicide,
>friends in Beggs and students of the university as well are at a loss
>to explain young Crawford's action. When the body was found one hand
>was resting on an automatic pistol, a bullet from which had caused the
>boy's death, the coroner said. A partially empty bottle of poison was
>found beside the body also. Fayetteville authorities believe the youth
>was sickened by the poison and then decided to use the gun.
> The boy's father is Dr. T.O. Crawford of Dewey. An uncle, Dr. H.G.
>Crawford, lives in Bartlesville. The youth has made his home here with
>his mother, Mrs. Ollie Crawford, for several years.
>
>I was hoping that an obit existed for him in the Beggs area--I would
>think it would since his father was a doctor.
>
>His brother was Oren Whelpy Crawford--I believe older and died about
>1937 in that area. I would also like to have his obit and any record of burial ---is he buried at the Beggs cemetery also???

thanks for any help on these two.

Julia Isaacs Schroeder

James & Agnes (FERNE) RUSSELL, early-mid 1900's
I am looking for any information on James A. Russell and his wife Agnes (Ferne) Russell. James was born in Ireland c.1861 and lived in Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Arkansas before moving to Henryetta, Okmulgee Co., OK.

He married Agnes Ferne in Cherokee Co., KS on 23-Apr-1885.

I have them traced through the Census records to Henryetta. Based on those records, Agnes died sometime between 1920 and 1930, and James died after 1930.

James and Agnes had a daughter Agnes who married John M. Wilson (1893-1967), probably about 1920 or so in Okmulgee County. The last known location for them is also Henryetta. Agnes Wilson died in October of 1992.

Does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

Glenn
A few Louisiana "free blacks", however, served in white Confederated units and received Confederate pensions. Among them were Charles Lutz, Jean Baptiste Pierre-Auguste, and Leufroy Pierre-Auguste of St. Landry Parish, who fought with the Confederate army troops at Shiloh,
Fredericksburg, and Vicksburg.

Confederate Research Sources

===========================================================

Civil War Service:

Auguste, Lufoy Pierre. Bergeron, Jr.

Lufroy Pierre-Auguste was born in St. Landry Parish about 1830. He was the son of Pierre Pierre-Auguste and Gabriele Tessier, free persons of color. The 1860 census shows that Lufroy worked as a stockherder for Francois P. Pitre, Jr. Lufroy left his farm and joined Captain Daniel Gober's Big Cane rifles, which became Company K, Sixteenth Louisiana Infantry Regiment. The first two muster rolls of this company list him as a free man of color-the only such instance found in researching these men. None of the men discussed in this manuscript, except for Lutz and possibly Gabriel Grappe, pretended they were white. The other men in their units undoubtedly knew them as free blacks. The Sixteenth Louisiana fought in the battles of Shiloh, Farmington, and Perrysville. On December 8, 1862, while in camp at Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Lufroy received a discharge from Confederate service. The reason given for his dicharge was that he was a "colored man." Apparently superior authorities had finally discovered that he was black and ordered his separation from the army. Lufroy went home, but he did become involved in one other incident before war's end. On May 13, 1865, he surprised two Jayhawkers near Opelousas. These men made up part of a band of outlaws, deserters, and draft dodgers who resisted Confederate authority. The two Jayhawkers fired at him, and he returned fire, hitting one of the men. Lufroy married in 1869, but no further information on his life after the war has come to light so far.

===========================================================
Francois P.
WHERE WAS HIRAM AND DORA???

I am trying to find my grandmother Dora LAWSON SWEET and her father Hiram Shelva LAWSON on the 1930 census. I have found Dora's husband Earnest Columbus SWEET living with his mother Sarah Dezzie SIMS SWEET and his brother Thomas. They were living in Bryan, Okmulgee County, Oklahoma. Earnest was found living in Bryan in 1910, 1920 and 1930. Also, Earnest is listed on the census as being single, does anyone know why this was when he married Dora in 1923? He and Dora were married until her death in 1951. I cannot find Dora or Hiram anywhere. Hiram and his wife Sarah Jane JAMES and their children, including twins Dora and Nora LAWSON, moved to Kittitas, Washington and were living there in 1910. Does anyone know why this family moved there from Ozark Co., MO? While they were there in Kittitas, Washington they were living with Dora's half sister, Della Mae Ford and her husband Robert Marlett. They moved back to Ozark in 1920 and then are not found in 1930. Dora's mother Sarah Jane was also found living in Bryan, Okmulgee, OK in 1930 living with her son Floyd LAWSON.

Sometime in the mid to late 1940's Hiram was committed to a mental health hospital for beating his daughter Dora with a stick. He was committed to a hospital in either Wichita Falls, TX or Norman, OK. Hiram died in 1949 and was supposedly buried in Haskell Cemetery in Haskell, OK, although I have been to this cemetery and have been unable to find the location of his grave and they have no record of his burial. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I am looking for information about George Washington Evans and his wife Pink (Gordon) Evans. Pink had one son, named Eugene Gordon, born 1885. George W. Evans, I have been told was the First Mayor of Okmulgee, Ok. He was born in Al. about 1859, and was in Eufaula, Indian Territory in 1887. Pink was born in Ms., the daughter of Thomas J. and Mary Elizabeth(Gentry) Gordon. Does anybody have any infomation on Eugene Gordon, George Washington Evans and Sarah Pinkney (Pink) Evans?? Pink is a sister to my Great Grand Mother, Susan Gordon Baker. I think that other than being First Mayor, Evans was in the real estate business. Please E-Mail me at Barbara_Ballard@Juno.com

Born: March 23, 1921
Date of loss: October 20, 1952. Missing in Action

Soldier: JOHN E JOHNSON
Born: June 20, 1914, Caucasian
Date of loss: July 12, 1950. Prisoner of War

There are 46 families from Oklahoma that have not been located. There are two families from Okmulgee County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return.

Lockmanese Family from Henryetta, OK.

I am looking for information on the Lockmanese family who lived in Henryetta, Ok. They are on the 1930 census. Joe & Mary and children Joe, Mary, Ann, & Agnes. Joe worked in the coal mines as a machinist, per the census. I have recently found out that there was another daughter, Helen, who married a Suchar. I am looking for any information on her as well.
Also the son, Joe, was in an accident when he was about 10 years old. He was run over by a train and lost one of his legs. I would very much like to have a newspaper article on this if one exists. This young Joe was my husband's father.
The elder Joe and Mary were immigrants, Joe from Hungary and Mary from Austria.
Does anyone know anything about this family or can help me find information?

I am wanting information on these Bennetts that are buried in Beggs Cemetery. They are as follows Amy M. b. 1918, Nora Rance b. 1872, and Laura E. Bennett b. 1875. My grandmother Emily Jane Bennett Roberts is also buried in Beggs Cemetery and I wondered if there was a connection in this family of Bennett's? My Emily Jane Bennett moved from Pocahontas Randolph County Arkansas after 1920 and setteled in Beggs Oklahoma. Other surnames buried there are ROBERTS, WICKHAM, AND ROCKWOOD. Any help on these people would be appreciated. abkfsk@swbell.net

Muskogee Public Library

Published February 24, 2007 in Muskogee Phoenix

Now you can spread wings as you search for ancestors

By Wally Waits

Muskogee Public Library

The genealogy doors will be swinging open tomorrow at the Muskogee Public Library. Renovations in order to move into a larger space are finished. The use of two rooms upstairs for research is now a fond memory. Those rooms are empty of everything except for the ghosts of ancestors who are yet be found by researchers poring over books or peering intently at a microfilm reader. Hopefully, now that the books and film have been moved downstairs, the ghosts of the past will migrate downstairs, too. These ancestors, however, will find the research area on the first floor a more inviting place to lounge while awaiting discovery. The old research space will be renovated into a new meeting room for public use. People are naturally curious. They have been poking their heads in the doorway of the new Genealogy and Local History Room in the library. As the viewers’ eyes have swept across the large area, they have taken in the gray shelving with delight. They seem genuinely happy to see the neat, orderly rows of books on the shelves that now have space for new titles. Compact shelving was selected to allow greater use of available floor space in the room. Despite the installation of more than 2,750 linear feet of shelving, the use of compact shelving means that there is room for future growth. Additional ranges may be purchased and installed individually as needed to handle future growth. The new compact shelving means many things to the researcher. First of all, reaching for books on the top shelves now means that those items are reachable without having to search for a kick-step. Some might recall the use of cranks to roll a range of older compact shelving. The library selected to install motorized shelving in the library. The motorized controls will allow the use of a fingertip to roll a range of shelving into position. The new research area downstairs offers greater elbow room with additional study desks for patron use. Electrical outlets at the tables enable easy use of laptops. The researchers will enjoy having elbow room in which to spread their research notes out. Maybe at last, they will be able to unravel their ancestral knots they have struggled with for so long. During the past 15 years the library’s collection of genealogy and local history material has grown substantially. Members of the local genealogical community have promoted this expansion with generous gifts. By local, that does not necessarily mean just people living in Muskogee County. Such definitions as “local” and “foreign” are breaking down in the modern age of telecommunications and online connectivity. A former Muskogee girl who became a west coast columnist and Puget Sound resident is one such supporter. Another makes a sizable donation monthly out of a trust fund to build the collection. With the doors opening again, researchers who have wanted access to back issues of the Muskogee Phoenix, or to other county newspapers, will again have the opportunity to conduct their searches. Those researchers looking for accounts of their ancestors will again be able to reach up and retrieve a county history the ancestors are mentioned in. This is my farewell column for the library. A lot of people have helped me reach many of my life’s goals. While I will not name each of you individually, I want the reader to realize how grateful I am for your kindness and support. I look forward to retirement as an opportunity to give back to such a wonderful community.

From the Medford (OR) Mail Tribune 01-30-2007 at www.mailtribune.com

Photo included

Lewis Vernon Cummings was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma on May 21, 1925. He passed away peacefully in Medford, Ore., on Jan 22, 2007.His parents were Mae and Charles Cummings. Lewis began working at age 12 unloading boxcars, but still graduated from Henryetta High School in 1943. He enlisted in the Navy on May 25, 1943. He served as a pharmacist's mate on the USS Mindanao, a repair ship that was anchored in the Harbor of Manus Island, Philippines on Nov. 10, 1944. The ammunition ship Mt. Hood exploded while anchored 100 yards from the Mindanao which was riddled with holes from the shrapnel. Hundreds of men died in an instant. Lewis survived, but woke up in a hospital several days later with little memory of the horrifying events of that day.

Upon honorable discharge from the service he enrolled at University of Oklahoma where he studied pharmacy and pre-med. Unable to afford medical school, he graduated from the school of pharmacy and began his career. While still in college he began dating the love of his life, Joy Ann Hudman, a recent graduate of Stephens College. They were married on Dec 24, 1948 in Henryetta by his good friend, Ross Silvey.

In 1952 Lewis and Joy moved to California and by 1953 he owned Bell Drugs, a pharmacy he operated for 25 years in Bell, Calif. They raised four children during that time: Jack Cummings, Susan Thomas, Lisa Marino, and John Cummings. Lewis was active in the S. Calif. Pharmaceutical Assoc., serving as board member, and president. He was active in Lion's Club for over 50 years, helping with innumerable charity events in S. Calif. and in Mt. Shasta where they moved in 1977. Lewis continued working as a pharmacist for Thrifty Drugs until his retirement in 1998. He continued doing volunteer work at the fish hatchery, and Lion's Club projects along with taking care of his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold, Charles, Earl, and Homer; and granddaughter, Sacha Marino. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Joy; children, Jack, Susan, Lisa, and John; grandchildren, Donnie Cummings, Joseph Cummings, Jonathon Lewis Cummings, Elyse Ledger-Thomas, Matthew Thomas, Aimee Marino, Doug Marino; great-grandchildren, Ezekiel Cummings, Shylo Cummings, Trevor Cummings, Andrew Cummings, Emily Cummings, Caleb Marino, Travis Harnos and Sydney Harnos, Andrew Ledger-Thomas. His ashes will be interred next to his beloved granddaughter, Sacha.

A Memorial Service was held in Mt. Shasta at the Hope Evangelical Methodist Church on Thursday January 25, 2007.
