Fred Havens 94, resident of Nowata, left this life Saturday night, December 23, 2000, in the Nowata Nursing Center.
Funeral services for Mr. Havens will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 27, in he Benjamin Funeral Chapel at Nowata. The Reverend Christine Bell will officiate interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Nowata.
Fred Havens began this life July 9, 1906 in Taney County, Missouri as the son of Benjamin Franklin and Helen Sophronia Woodruff Havens. Fred spent his early years in Missouri and moved to Altoona, Kansas with his family when he was 12 years old. Later, he moved to Kansas City for a time and then moved back to Missouri. Mr. Havens met and later was united in marriage with Zona Ruhamah Alleger on April 21, 1928 at Neosho, Missouri. The couple moved form Newton County, Missouri to Nowata. Later, they moved to Elkhead, Missouri and then returned to the Nowata area in 1961. he had lived in California during World War 2. Mr. Havens spent his working years working for the railroad, as a carpenter, an oil field worker, and farmer. Mr. Havens loved to garden and operated a fruit and vegetable stand from his home on highway 169 south of Nowata. he was also an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Nowata.
Mr. Havens is survived by one son, Claude L. Havens and his wife, Edna of Bartlesville, by one daughter, Joyce E. Bright and her husband W.R. of Nowata, by one daughter-in-law, Annette Havens of Afton; one sister, Kate Smith of Deepwater, Missouri, four grandchildren, Chris L. Havens his wife, Susan of Beggs; Kelli Bright Smith and her husband, Kenneth of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Susan Bright Laughlin and her husband, Steve of Tulsa and Cathy Bright Schaffer and her husband, Brad of Lincoln, Nebraska; eleven great-grandchildren, Christopher, Sharon, Catherine and Stefan Havens, all of Beggs; Sarah, Cynthia, Cameron and Casey Smith, all of Fayetteville, Arkansas and Joshua, Samantha and Jessica Laughlin all of Tulsa; by other relatives, by his many friends.
Mr. Havens was preceded in death by his wife, Zona R. Havens on April 27, 1989; by one son, Nolan J. Havens on October 21, 1999; by three brothers, Henry H., Charles E., and James W. Havens and by three sisters, Vinnie Lyman, Eva Holt and Gussie Murphy.
