Private family services were held for Leona Margaret Terrell Pierce Mattix, 89, of Nowata, who died Friday, December 15, 2000 at Nowata Nursing Center.
Leona was born in Nowata County on February 19, 1911 the daughter of Lewis A. "Lute" and Dora B. Foster Terrell. She was a lifetime resident of Nowata County. She received her education in the Terrell School. Leona was a familiar face at Bliss Restaurant where she worked as cashier for many years. Leona had also worked at the Rexall Drug and Ben Franklin Store in Nowata as well as at Montgomery Ward at Bartlesville. Leona's favorite past times were riding her horse in her younger days and dancing in her later years. She also enjoyed going to Las Vegas. Leona was first married to Joseph Ray Pierce and then later to William Anthony Mattix on July 1, 1968 at Nowata.
Leona was proud of her Cherokee and Irish heritage. She was especially fond of a large poster she kept on her wall of Monty Hawkeye Henson, a rodeo star. Leona was a member of the First Baptist Church in Nowata and sang with the Golden Notes Choir.
Mrs. Mattix is survived by a daughter, Joy K. Elledge of Nowata; four grandchildren: Sarah Smith and her husband, Mike of Perry; Judd Pearce and his wife, Brandi of Shawnee; Doak Elledge and his wife, Marla of Pampa, Texas; Rusty Elledge ad his wife, Michaelle of Midland, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Jeff Michael Smith of Perry; Ty and Con Elledge both of Pampa, Texas and Allyson Elledge of Decatur, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Mattix on April 8, 1976; by three beloved children: Michael T. Pearce, Joe Lewis Pearce and Jackie Pearce; by her parents. Lewis and Dora Terrell; by one brother, Foster Terrell and by one sister, Ruby B. Terrell Blasingme Stegal.
The family suggests that friends who wish may remember the 10-33 Emergency Team at 321 East Cherokee in Nowata or their favorite charity.
