August 3, 1922

O. E. WARD Appointed Mail Carrier on Route 2
On Monday, O. E. WARD received notice of this appointment as carrier on Route 2, recently established south of Davis. … He has been bookkeeper at the FREEMAN store nearly 2 ½ years in which position he will be succeeded by W. F. PARKER.

Death of Mrs. Rikard
MRS. NANCY RIKARD, wife of J. C. RIKARD, died this morning at 8:45 at the family home 3 miles east of Davis, after an illness of several months. She was 67 years of age. She had been a citizen of this section about 20 years. She is survived by a husband and nine children. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery Friday morning at 10:30. Services will be held at the grave.

In Cattle Market
J. B. HARRELL was among the delegation from Murray County at the Oklahoma National Stock yards last Thursday. He had in two cars of steers, 54 head averaging 1052 pounds brining $6.60. U. S. JONES, a regular from Murray County, was in the Thursday market with a string of steers including 34 head of 1057 average that sold at 6.50, 23 head of 1993 sold at $62.5, 49 head of 1002 at $5.35 and 24 of 1031 at $6.40.

WILL HORTON Hurt
WILL H. HORTON, brother of T. H. HORTON of this city, seems to been an unlucky man. He has been working for the Dallas Light & Power Co. for some time, and word was received that he fell last Thursday and broke his back in 2 places… He fell and broke his hip last October and was in the sanitarium five months, and had been out just a couple of months when he fell again. He also fell and sustained painful injuries at Valley Mill, Texas nearly two years ago. He formerly lived in Davis and Davis friends are sorry to hear of this misfortune.

The First Bale
The first bale of this season’s cotton was brought in Wednesday morning by ED WILEY. It was ginned at R. A. VAUGHN’s gin, and weighed 358 pounds and was sold to TOM Davis for 20 cents. A premium of $43 was given by Davis businessmen. This is the earliest date the first bale has been marketed here in many years.

LEON MYERS Married
News of the marriage of LEON MYERS has been received. He and MRS. GERTRUDE PRIDE were married in Memphis, Tennessee last Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The bride is not known in Davis. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. JOHN L. MYERS of this city and has lived here several years. He is now assistant yard master for the Frisco at Memphis. He and his bride will continue to live in Memphis.

Oak Ridge News
Mr. and Mrs. W. J. RANKINS of Wayne visited his sister, MRS. W. T. MARTIN last week.

Mr. and Mrs. FRANK MONORE of Oklahoma City have been visiting his sister, MRS. RILLA RUSSELL.

MISSES ETHEL MARTIN and CLEO EDWARDS spent Sunday with their friend PEARL BEARDEN.

The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. ROBERT EDWARDS is on the sick list this week.

MRS. BUD MARTIN was the dinner guest of MRS. M. L. EVANS Sunday.

MISS JOSEY COPPS was the Saturday guest of MISS LILLIE JETER.

PROF. WALKER’s brother of Pauls valley visited the Oak Ridge school Friday and played ball with the children.

M. L. EVANS is attending the Holiness camp meeting at Sulphur this week.

MRS. BUD GARRETT and MRS. HARLEY GRIFFIN spent Thursday with MRS. RILLA RUSSELL.

Mr. and Mrs. GEORGE JAMES and MRS. TOM HARMON were the dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. MARTIN Sunday.

MRS. KATIE HARMON and MRS. BUCK COPPS spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. HENRY COPPS.

Mr. and Mrs. MELVIN MOGG spent Monday night with Mr. and Mrs. BUD MARTIN.

Smythe News
A large crowd attended singing at MR. SMITH’s Saturday night.

Mr. and Mrs. BOB JONES of Eldorado were the weekend guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. MAL WILLIS.

WILLARD WARDEN spent last week in Milburn and Durant visiting friends.

R. T. RAMSEY and family visited friends and relatives at Sunshine.

MISS EMMA WILLIS spent Sunday night with her aunt, MRS. LON WILLIS of Davis.

BILL LAMBERT was the dinner guest of MARVIN WISHARD Sunday.

NINA PENNER is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. JOHN DUGGER.

Mr. and Mrs. JESS THOMAS and family attended the preaching at Sulphur Sunday night.

MISS VERA NIXON visited friends at Rock Creek Saturday and Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. CLAUD WILLIS are visiting relatives and friends at Lexington.

MISS VELMA SIMS visited her aunt, MRS. JESS THOMAS.

MRS. B. W. REA and family spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. MAL WILLIS.

Mr. and Mrs. LON WILLIS spent Sunday with the family of MAL WILLIS./

Crusher Plant at Sulphur Completed
The Continental Asphalt and Petroleum Company, with a big plant at Dougherty, and now mining the asphalt mines just south of town, have completed a big crushing plant on the Frisco tracks, adjoining the old fire hall… V. V. LOONEY will be in charge of the Sulphur plant and states that wagons would begin hauling in large quantities of rock asphalt.

August 31, 1922

The Missionary Baptist Church meeting at Wheeler closed last Sunday night. There were 25 additions to the church by baptism and 5 by letter. The youngest baptized was CARL MANNING age 11. The oldest was GRANDPA PEASTER, age 72. The church gave REV. R. D. BIRDWELL a unanimous call to pastor them next associational year.

REV. J. M. MARTIN died a few days ago and his body was shipped to Wynnewood for burial Monday. We failed to learn the cause of his death. Rev. Martin was 76 years of age and lived in Wynnewood many years. He was a Presbyterian minister and many years ago was the pastor of the Presbyterian church at Davis.

MISS CAROLYN PULLEN left today for Altus to take a position as teacher in the school. She taught there last year.

W. W. SHORT has purchased the SAM EDWARDS place near W. A. GABEL’s residence. The purchase was made by a trade.

EDGAR BIRD of Arlington, Texas came in to visit his brother, W. L. BIRD. Mr. Bird is a traveling salesman for the N. K. FAIRBANKS Co.

COL. JERRY MCCLUSKEY and W. H. RICHARDSON motored up from Ardmore and transacted business and mingle among old time friends here.

Mr. and Mrs. JAMES W. KYLE left today for Stillwater to re-enter the A. & M. College. They have been here the past month visiting Mrs. Kyle’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. MOGG.

OCAY GETTLE came in last week and visited homefolks and friends. He has been living in California the past 14 months. He left yesterday for Lebanon, Tennessee to enter the Cumberland Law School.

Mr. and Mrs. HILARY STEDMAN returned Monday to Cameron, Texas after visiting Davis relatives. They were accompanied home in their car by FRANK STEDMAN, who will spend the week in Cameron.

MRS. R. L. FREEMAN and MRS. O. M. WOODWARD attended the wedding of MISS MARIE FREEMAN to FRANK ROBINSON at Pauls valley yesterday afternoon. Miss FREEMAN is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. WILL FREEMAN, former Davis citizens.

Mr. and Mrs. SHIRLEY ANDERSON and their two children returned home to Galveston after visiting with his parents, Mr. and rms. D. A. ANDERSON here. Shirley is employed in the valuation department of the Santa Fe.

Mr. and Mrs. W. Y CHITWOOD had as their guests last Thursday and Friday: Mr. and Mrs. LUTHER CROWDER and son of Snyder, Texas, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. EAVES of Poolville, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. BRADY of Ardmore. Mrs. Crowder and Mrs. Eaves are Mr. Chitwood’s sisters and Mrs. Brady is his niece.
