Searching for Burton family graves in Pryor Oklahoma

I have always been told stories about my maternal grandmother's family living in Oklahoma for a few years in the early 1900s. I was also told that the family lived in Pryor while they were in Oklahoma. I'm trying to find out about death/burial information for two children that were supposed to be buried in Pryor.

The first child is Mabel Agnes Burton, born 26 November, 1891 in Missouri (probably Randolph or Howard County). Mabel died 13 September 1906 and I was told she died in Mayes County.

The second child is Thomas Waller Burton. Family stories indicate that he was born sometime between 1906 and 1908 and died as an infant. The family tells a story that when Thomas Waller was born, his father, Gorham Burton was very ill. Gorham Burton claimed to have seen Mabel in a dream saying that she was visiting to "take the baby away" and Gorham replied "I know".

It would mean so much to everyone in the family if we could find out where Mabel and Thomas were buried. We have not found their graves in the family graveyard in Missouri, so we suspect that they are buried in Oklahoma.
Thanks!
Beth

William R. Smith age 70 b IL and his brother McClusky (Mack) Smith age 66 b IA were living in Hogan, Mayes Co OK on the 1920 census.
Wm was living alone at D/F 55 and Mack was living with their sister and her husband at D/F 58 (Lewis and Irene Allen). I cannot find any record of Wm R and Mack Smith after that census but Lewis and Irene Allen were still in Mayes Co when the 1930 census was taken.

I am trying to learn where they may have died and been buried. They were not with their only other sibling in 1930 so it makes me think they must have died in Mayes Co. I have been searching for an online OK death record list but there doesn't seem to be one. Is there one for Mayes Co or cemeteries that have been canvassed ?

Thanks, Bettye

B. F. Pennington 1859-1920-buried in Pryor, Mayes, Oklahoma Query

I am researching/hunting/desperately seeking information about my great-great-grandfather, Ben F Pennington b. abt 1855 MS. I know in 1880's he was living in Van Zandt county TX. After 1900 he disappears. His wife, Mary Vashti Toles, d. 1902 in Van Zandt county TX. One of his brothers moved into Oklahoma Territory in 1903 in the southern central part (Ardmore, Tishamingo, Woodville area). What happened to Ben remains a mystery.

On Findagrave.com someone posted an information of a man fitting the date of birth to my relative buried in Fairview Cemetery, Pryor, Mayes, Oklahoma. He is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Pryor, Mayes county. There was a family story passed along that Ben possibly went to Kiefer, Oklahoma to work the railroads. If this is true, it would put him in the general area, about 60 miles difference.

I am hoping to find someone who is a relative of the man buried in Pryor under the name B.F. Pennington to help me either rule him out as a lead, or otherwise.

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.
j_bmartin@hotmail.com

POW/MIA Korean War. Mayes Co. THOMPSON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mayes County Oklahoma as his home of record.

Soldier: SEQUOYAH THOMPSON
Born: 1932
Date of loss: Jan. 24, 1952. KIA

Sequoyah Thompson is on the Department of Defense Urgent List. This means that there are recovered remains that Thompson is associated with. Family DNA is needed to verify or eliminate him.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 45 families in Oklahoma that have not been located. There is one family from Mayes County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (77 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
In the Salina News Nov. 9, 1917 there is an obit I am trying to get more information on for the Wickliffe cemetery records in Mayes Co. It read: "A Fullblood Cherokee woman by the name of Black Bear was buried at Wickliffe 35 Tuesday." Vol. 5, No. 33 pg. 1 .
I believe this woman's surname was Blackbear and not her first and last name as the paper transcribed. Wickliffe 35 is Wickliffe School Dist. #35 located seven miles outside of Salina OK.
Dawes Roll shows a Sallie Blackbear , Cherokee age 40 in Saline, also found a marriage record for a Kani(?)-hi-yada Blackbear m. Nancy Cochran March 8, 1906 both from Spavinaw Ok. Since the Wickliffe community was once known as Cochran Prairie and all the surrounding area was called Spavinaw then, thought this Nancy might be a possiblity. Thank you for any help in putting a name to this woman.

Salina Herald Newspaper film , Dec. 17, 1913 states that one
"Les Stevens formerly of Pryor and Salina, has opened a store at Wicklffe school house, three miles south of Spavinaw and is doing well."
Does anyone have the history or any data on this store or Les Stevens?
Ref. to son Mack and that Les Stevens was Mayor and merchant prince.
The area of Wickliffe in the old records is referred to as Spavinaw, Cochran Prairie or Saline in general. Very seldom do I find it called Wickliffe in my research.
In Mar. of 1914 the paper states the Les Stevens traded for 4 lots in Strang and will move, so the store may have only been in operation for lest than a year, but WHY at the Wickliffe School?
Thank you.

My grandfather, William N. West, was a businessman in Spavinaw in the late 1890s-1900s. He was married to Clementine Shadle(s) in 1890. William and his brother, Walter A. both served in the Civil War under Stand Watie. Both are buried in the West Family Cementery just outside of Strang. When the dam was built in Spavinaw, my grandfather's house (supposedly a Mormon waystation built of rock) was covered by the lake. Sometime in the 1920s, a Tulsa newspaper ran a feature article about Spavinaw Lake with a picture of my grandfather's house. Would anyone in Spavinaw have any pictures of old Spavinaw before the dam was built and possibly some of the homes that were there then? Thanks
Jim Coats

Hi! I am researching the John Sherman LANE ( 1893 MO-1972 OK) family of Adair,Mayes Co. OK. John's father was George Grant LANE (1864 MO.-1943 OR), who lived in Locust Grove. George's father was Daniel Alfred LANE (1829 KY-1900 MO). There are family stories that this LANE family is part Cherokee. I have a lot of information on my grand father John's ancestors, but no proof of Indian heritage. I will be happy to share what I have with anyone that is related to this line. I hope someone can help me with the Indian story, and fill a few missing links. Thanks,
Charlotte

Catherine Elizabeth Hendrex LEE obit 2001

Adair, Mayes Co. Obit:
From microfilm at the Pryor Creek Public Library:
CATHRYN ELIABETH LEE
Funeral services for Cathryn Elizabeth Lee, 89, of Adair, were held at 2 pm today in the Utopia Baptist Church, northwest of Adair. The Rev. LF. Chronister officiated. Interment followed in the Adair Cem. with Wayne Shultz, Charles Jordan, Sam Anderson, Bob Looney, Tom Linihan and Joe Paysinger serving as casket bearers. Services were under the direction of Garner's Jim Green Funeral Home, Pryor. Lee was born 27 Mar 1912 in the family home on North Rowe in Pryor to George Emmett and Katherine Lee (Burnham) Hendrex. She died 4 May 2001 in Prairie Village, Kan.
She often liked to tell that she was ' born, raised and married' in the same house on North Rowe in Pryor. She was a member of the Pryor High School, Graduating Class of 1930. She married Fred Sewell Lee on 19 Nov 1930 in her parents home. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage until his death on 31 Jul 1969. Along with Fred's parents, they operated a general store in Adair. Her husband was elected to serve in the Oklahoma House of Representatives at age 24. She continued to manage the store for 4 additional years following his death. She was a longtime faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Adair where she had served as pianist, organist and soloist. For many years she was requested to sing her rendition of 'Oh, Holy Night!' at Christmas. She was the church secretary for over 25 years as well as a former adult ladies Sunday School teacher. Several years ago she moved her membership to Tuopia Baptist church were she remained a member. She was a very active member of the Easter Star, serving as Worthy matron of the Adair Lodge No. 99. The Lee's were very staunch supporters of the Adair community and were proud of the Adair school system. She was a very talented, kind and caring Christian business lady whose focus in life was serving God and helping others. One unknown fact of her life was the numerous Adair students she assisted financially for their college eduation.
For many years she supported financially a resident of the Baptist Children's Home, Owasso. For decades she mailed birthday cards, anniversary cards, get-well cards and sympathy cards to present and former Adair residents and other friends. Not long ago she shared with her friends very simply that the "Lord has given me a wondeful life!" She will be remembered in the hearts of her famil and her 'Adair family' as an example of a dignified, professional Christian lady who was always cheerful, kind, loving and willing to help everyone.
Survivors include her nieces Mariliy Harrison Morris of Leawood, Kan., Cathy Hendrex Foster of Richardson, Texas and Nancy Hendrex Simmons of Italby, Texas; other relatives and the Adiar community who loved and cherished her. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; parents; a brother George Wison Hendrex; sisters Nellie Aeileen Harrison and Ea Hendrex. In lieu of other remembrances donations may be made in her memory to Utopia Baptist church, Adair.

William Dawkins found in the 1930 Mayes County census with 2nd wife, Anna (Hensley). I have no idea where his first wife Tennessee is buried and am asking for a cemetery look-up, please. Tennesse (Tipton) was born approx. 1885 in Arkansas. William's 1942 WWII Draft record shows he and Anna living in Evansville, AR, so I am unsure if he died and is buried in Arkansas or Oklahoma.

Would appreciate any assistance!

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Mayes County, Oklahoma as his home of record.

Soldier: SEQUOYAH THOMPSON
Born: May 14, 1932. American Indian
Date of loss: Jan. 24. 1952, Killed in Action

There are 46 families in Oklahoma that have not been located. There is one family from Mayes County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return.

From
The Pryor Jeffersonian
Pryor, Oklahoma
(Mayes County)
Thursday, February 8. 1945

(with photo)

Pfc. Lowell Bavinger Is Killed in
Action on Layte, December 27

Pfc. Francis Lowell Bavinger was killed in action on December 27, 1944, on Leyte, according to a telegram received on February 2 by his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Wes Bavinger of Pryor from the War Department. The telegram stated that a letter of information would follow.

Pfc. Bavinger is a graduate of the Pryor high school with the class of 1937. During his schooling in Pryor he was a star football player with the Tigers.

He was inducted into the service in March, 1941 and received most of his training at Camp Haan, California. He had spent about 18 months overseas in front line duty.

Pfc. Bavinger was a member of the U. S. 7th Division, veterans of Attu and Kwajelein. It was the 7th Division which made the big push when landing on Leyte, with fiercest fighting taking place on "Shoestring Ridge," 15 miles south of Ormoc, where 60 Japanese were killed for every American. For five nights this seasoned Japanese 26th Division attacked the U. S. 7th Division.

This 7th Division also saw much action in the Aleutians and Marshall campaigns. From the Honolulu Advertiser, September 10, 1944 comes this caption under a picture, "Seated the the reviewing automobile, President Rooseveklt uncovers as the U. S. Army's famed Seventh Division passed in review at Schofield Barracks during his review visit to Hawaii." Pfc. Bavinger was in this review.
I am looking for the said parents of Frank Herbert Lee, b. 22 Sept. 1900 in Pryor Creek, OK.

Frank Herbert Lee
b. 1875 in WI
m.
Clara Marie Nayhosue/Neihouse [or other various spellings for the sound of Nayhouse]
b. 1873-1883 in IL [her parents born in Germany].

I would be just as happy with any information on these individuals. I have located various possible census records for her in which she remains single until she died. I am not certain about the family stores either in which the father, Frank Herbert Lee (8175) was to be Cherokee as well.

The census located for the son, Frank Herbert Lee (1900) states that both his parents are born in OK. So these individuals could me anyone. I won't even be shocked to find him adopted or living in a orphanage or home. But 1920 he is 19 & in IL, making his way to OH & marrying Mardell Beamer.

THANKS!

It is now located in Mayes County, Oklahoma. He was born May 2, 1851 in Indiana. The family migrated to Kansas after he married. He was in the area with his wife, Cecelia Rosalet Love Rollins and their children and some of his Love relatives. None of them stayed in the territory too long before returning to Kansas and any record of his final resting place has been lost to time.

Any assistance or a point in the direction of where to possible begin looking would be greatly appreciated.

Lisa

There once was a family of Scoggins who lived in Pryor. Mr. Tom or William Scoggin married Josephine Beanstick. Thay had two girls Geneva and Beulah who were close teenagers when a long came little Lee. They were originally from Watts, Adair, OK, because that is where little Lee was born. Now one day the girls had gone to get some kerosene to start the fire in the house when they returned Dad started it. The liquid they had received was not kerosene, and it burned the house and Tom or Will had burns all over his body and eventually died a week later. Little Lee was 4 years old nad he was born either in 1913, 1914, or 1915 when Mom Josephine placed the 3 children in the orphanage. Eventually Lee was adopted by the Easleys and the girls because they were old enough went to live with Mom in Oklahoma City. She eventually remarried this time to "Peg Leg" Johnson. Any enough regarding the fire or the orphange a great help.

I am desperately seeking info on Lee Roy Bryant born 1931 in Tennessee to Cecil Oliver Bryant and Bertha Lee McCaig. His wife's names was Pat. They had a son named Robert, and a daughter whose name I do not know. I suspect that Roy is since deceased as I have found a Roy Bryant on the SSDI b. 1931 in TN and died June 1987, in Chouteau OK. This would seem to be him. He and his wife and children had left TN, and the last known address for them was in OK, when his mother passed away in 1986. His siblings were unable to contact him.

I AM TRYING TO FIND EITHER HIS SON OR DAUGHTER. THEY HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS WHO WOULD LOVE TO GET TO KNOW THEM.

Please contact me at cedarjunction@hotmail.com or 618-521-2930, if this is you , or you have any information.

Thanks Scott McCaig

Valley country school???

Has anyone heard of a little country school called the Valley School (or something similar to that). It might have been in operation around the timeframe of the 1920-1940, but I am not sure. I have been told that most likely it was in Mayes county but might have been in Wagoner county.

If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Twila

Robert Friend MONTGOMERY born in 1932 died 18 January 2005. I do not know where. But the SSDI indicates that final paperwork went to Locust Grove Mayes Co. OK 74352

I know Bob had two sisters: Beverly Ruth born about 1936 and Jayne born about 1937. I do not know any married names nor do I know if he was married and perhaps the spouse lived in Locust Grove. I am hoping that since the SSDI death date is fairly accurate that should a sister or a child be living in Locust Grove that there might be an obituary or notice of his death published.

Is there anyone who would be able to check this out for me? Thank You Rose

AR.

I have determined she lived in the NE corner of Mayes Co. in 1900, I guess close to the Craig Co. line but she does not show up in a cemetery in Craig Co. so thought I would ask for a cemetery lookup for Hettie Lynn in Mayes Co.

Children: Mary L. Lynn, William E. Lynn, Frances V. Lynn, Andrew J. Lynn Jr. & Sarah B. Lynn. Born between 1867 - 1884 in MO, AR & I.T.

Would appreciate any help with Hettie Unk Lynn.
We don't know of an orphanage in Hughes (Town in OK?), but there was a Cherokee Orphanage until it burned in 1903 at Salina in Mayes Cty. OK. It continued as the Whittaker State Home until the 1950's or 1960's. For record information, contact us at Mayes County Genealogy Society, P. O. Box 924, Chouteau, OK 74337.

Mayes Co. land owned by Minnesotans ca 1900

I'm looking for some land owned by Godleib/Gottlieb Tessman(n) in 1902. We found a couple of really short newspaper articles and one said Oklahoma, while the other one said "Strand, O.T." Searching OK we think that this was probably supposed to be Strang, OK. Can anyone help me located this little farm in OK?

(London column – Freeborn County Times, Albert Lea, Minnesota,

August 29, 1902, page 5, column 1-2 – selected items)
Christian Schilling has some land in Oklahoma, where he went the 3rd of June. He says that when he arrived harvesting had already begun.
His son will go after harvest to help pick the cotton crop of which there is 40 acres.
G. Tessman can't get along wihout it? “The Times.” Of course.
F. W. Schilling has sided and painted the granary.
John Golnick rents his farm but he still finds work to do. He stacks for his renter and for the neighbors. He was stacking for Wm. Buth the day we met him.

(Myrtle column – Freeborn County Times, Albert Lea, Minnesota, October 24, 1902, page 8, column 4)
Julius Tessman left Tuesday morning via Omaha and Kansas City for Strand, O.T., to look after his father's farm down there. (Note: town is probably Strang, O.K.)

I am searching for information about the Eastern Oklahoma State Home in Hughes. It was previously a Cherokee Orphanage in the late 1800's but by the 1920's it was open to everyone. Are there records available for this institution? If there are, how would I go about getting them? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you, Catherine
