Trouble at Claypool
At a meeting at the school house south of Claypool on Christmas day, a difference between some citizens and the trustees of the school resulted in which is described as a free for all. It appears that the trustees had made a rule that no singings or public meetings should be held in the school building at night, but did not object to day meetings. A discussion took place and the trustees were denounced. One trustee resented what he termed insult and the fight took place. The News failed to learn of the names of all parties involved, but HERSHEL LINDSEY was one of the parties in the fight and several arrests were made.

For several years prior to his disappearance, Plum engaged in real estate and loan business here, controlled credit to about $500,000. When he departed April 28, 1912, he left two communications, one resigning as mayor and one to his wife saying she would never see him again. Plum says he has been in Brazil most of the time of his absence. He returned two weeks ago. He had communicated with his wife about his possible return and to face whatever charges. For several days, Plum had been at his wife’s father’s home in Iowa, SHERIFF A. J. BLANKENSHIP accompanied Mrs. Plum there and the three returned here. Dubious transactions were uncovered in the bookkeeping…

The History of the Cornish Orphans’ Home
About four years ago, after having been a school teacher for several years and having taught a great number of homeless and destitute children, I conceived the idea of starting an Orphans’ home at Cornish.

At first, I met with all kinds of disheartening failures, people of my home town advised me never to make such venture…

At first I kept several children in a rented house which were cared for by my mother, but just as soon as the new building which I was having erected, was completed, I moved them all to the same and started into secure all the homeless and orphan children that I could take care of…

…statement from MISS KATE BERNARD, Commissioner of Charity, I also give the report of the local board of trustees of the home, showing the true conditions of the home. ..

We have established a receiving Home at Chickasha during the past few months where we receive children from all the state. All children taken in the receiving home who are in a condition to be given to a private family, we immediately find homes for them. All children who are not ready to be given homes with private families are taken to the Home at Cornish where they are carried through a course of training which prepares them to step into any private home and immediately seem like a member of the family.

Yours sincerely, M. E. HARRIS, State Manager

Statement from C. STEVENS, M. D. after his inspection of the home, finding the home in good sanitary condition for institutions of its kind. The children were clean and healthy, free from disease. Building, furnishings, etc found to be dry and clean, no damp or mouldy decaying…

From KATE BARNARD, Commissioner of Charities and Corrections of the State of Oklahoma… found it to be satisfactory…

From the trustees, A. MCCRORY, W. W. WOODWORTH and R. O. DULANEY: rooms of the children are cleaned everyday, children bathed regularly, …

Court Makes Unusual Ruling
At the January session of the district court of Carter County, the court heard the application of J. R. LEWIS, who resides a few miles east of Cornish, to set aside a former order of the court in which his divorced wife, ELIZABETH LEWIS, was granted custody of their little girl. The court did the unusual thing and placed the little girl in the hands of her father. The child and her brother, slightly older, both testified they would rather live with their father, that he was kind to them, sent them to school and helped them with their lessons. A son, 19 years old, lives with his mother and testified he disliked his father and would rather make his home with his mother.

A few days ago Mr. Wilson came to town and the check was declared a forgery. Immediately Constable J. A. CUMMINS went to the home of the WILLIAMS boys and arrested, W. B. WILLIAMS, brother to Arthur, who was supposed to have a hand in the forgery. While here, Cummins found a letter just written and addressed to Arthur WILLIAMS at St. Louis, Missouri. Cummins returned with his prisoner, telephoned the police chief at St. Louis and within three hours, Arthur WILLIAMS had been arrested there….
