I am looking for any information on Thomas J Simons b. 1925 in Diamond Township, Haskell County, Oklahoma. He was the son of Albert and Iona (Ermer) Simons and all three can be found on the 1930 US Census. Albert and Ermer are buried at Miners Cemetery in McCurtain, but I've hit a dead end when it comes to Thomas. I am also interested in finding out if Albert and Ermer had any other children. I'm just guessing but I think Thomas' middle name might be Jefferson because his grandfather was named Thomas Jefferson.

Riley Ford Obituary

Ford, Riley

Riley Ford was born October 3, 1914 in Stigler, Oklahoma to Modie and Lizzie (Bostick) Ford. Riley served two terms in the Conservation Corp, building the Angel Bright Trail in the Grand Canyon and fire breaks in Wyoming at Devil's Tower. Like many others, Riley migrated to California in 1940 to find work. He worked for Kirschermann and Pressler Farms for 43 years retiring in 1983. Riley will be remembered for being a hard worker, working long hours, 7 days a week during potato season. Riley married Ola Neal of Lamont on September 26, 1987 and they had quite an unusual wedding ceremony at an old west ghost town with shotguns drawn. After retirement Riley and Ola decided to take dance lessons and enjoyed the 2-Step with The Pals and Old Time Fiddler's contests in Green Acres. Riley also loved to garden, producing okra, tomatoes, walnuts and many other vegetables. He sold enough from his garden to finance his trips back east to visit family. Riley is survived by his wife of 20 years, Ola Ford of Arvin; sons, Ular Ford of Arkansas, Modie Ford of Missouri and Alvin Ford of Arvin; daughter, Cindy Dotson of Texas; brother, William Ford of Utah; sister, Lena Harness of Arkansas; step-children, Elton Neal, David Neal and Labetta Glenn; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His daughter, Carmel who passed away in 1982, preceded him in death. The family would like to thank the nurses of Optimal Hospice for the loving and tender care they gave Riley. Arvin Funeral Home will conduct a graveside funeral service on Monday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m., at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin, in the outdoor chapel for Riley Ford, age 93, of Arvin who passed away April 16, in Arvin with his family by his side. Chaplain Bob Winter of Optimal Hospice will officiate and interment will follow. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 20, from 2-8 p.m., at Arvin Funeral Home. Please sign Riley's guest book at www.GoldenValleyMemorialCare.com Riley Ford Oct. 3, 1914 - Apr. 17, 2008 Arvin Funeral Home
Published in the Bakersfield Californian on 4/19/2008.

HI! Everyone,
I live in the state of Virginia and I have for sometime now been trying to fine information on my great grandfather-John Hayes. All I have been able to fine is that he is buried in Mine's Cemetery in Haskell, Oklahoma. He was born on 17 Jan 1879 and died on 27 Aug 1937. He married Orpha Keys in Dec 1905 in Washington County, Arkansas. I was told he was a Mormon. I now he lived in Blanie and Stilwell Oklahoma also. John Nad Orpha had four daughters together, Anne- who died as a baby, Inita(Which is was her middle name, married and went by the surname of Teague and is buried also somewhere in Oklahoma.), Agnas who married and lived and is buried in California and my grandmother- Goldie Alice Hayes Howerton who also has passed away and is buried in Topeka, Kansas. I know nothing of John Hayes family, nothing about his parents. I do not even know if he had any brothers and sisters. I cannot even fine is obit or a copy of his death certificate. I would like to know who to e-mail at the mine's Cemetery to get copies of his cemetery records. Any help at all I would be very grateful for. Thank you very much for your time and your help.
QUINTON, Okla. (AP) -- Four people have died after a two-vehicle collision on State Highway 31 in Haskell County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the accident occurred Sunday at about 5:19 p.m. about one mile east of Quinton.

Troopers say a Ford Mustang driven by 25-year-old Jennifer Tucker of Kinta was eastbound and went left of center, striking a westbound Chevrolet Malibu driven by 69-year-old Wilbur Vanhorn of Norman.

The collision knocked Vanhorn's vehicle off the road and caused it to overturn one-half time, landing on its top and pinning its occupants for between 45 minutes and 2 1/2 hours.

Tucker was pinned in her car for about an hour. She died after being taken to a Stigler hospital.

Troopers say Vanhorn died at the scene, as did one of his passengers, 79-year-old Dolores Vanhorn of Eufaula. Another of his passengers, 81-year-old Lynn Vanhorn of Eufaula, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in Fort Smith, Ark.
Murder Mystery in Stigler, OK

Looking for any information on the brutal murder of Mrs. Tina Davis (also known as Mrs. Sarah V. Kendrick) on February 9, 1913 in Stigler, OK. Her two small children witnessed the murder. Her brother, J.R. Davis, is reported to have taken the children to Arkansas, but they were raised by a Tipton family in Arkansas instead of the Davis family. It is suspected that Mrs. Davis married an unknown Kendrick around 1906 or 1909. I have information regarding one of the children, but this murder is a brick wall. Thank you so much, Carol

Tom supposedly died in 1925, in Oklahoma. I have no documentation to prove this, but I did find Tom and his family living in the San Bois Township, Haskell, OK on the 1920 Census, household #330. On this census, his wife Leona Downing Jordan, and her older children (by her first husband, Moses Downing a full Cherokee and on the Dawes Roll as was she and the older children.) Also listed are the other children: (Grandfather)Rufus Cisero Jordan and Albert Jordan.

Thomas Roscrans Jordan was born on 06 Aug 1879, Mt. Home, AR. He was the son of Cicero & Mary Shadwick Jordan. I have attached a photo of Tom to this query, as well as his WWI Draft Registration card. This shows his own signature and lists his half-brother, W.D.[William Durham]Jordan as the nearest relative. [double click the photo to enlarge]

Tom's father, Cicero, is buried at Buffington Cemetery, Sequoyah County, OK.

Any help greatly appreciated!
This shows his own signature and lists his half-brother, W.D.[William Durham]Jordan as the nearest relative.

Tom's father, Cicero, is buried at Buffington Cemetery, Sequoyah County, OK.

Any help greatly appreciated!

I am looking for any information about my Mother's family. Her maiden name was Bean her father was Robert and her mother Johnnie. Mother had several siblings I know of only one still alive and her name is Irene Underwood. Both of her parents died while I was still a child, they both died in Stigler, OK. Robert sometime in the late 60's and Johnnie during the mid 70's. My mother was Ila Leoma Bean Martin, she died December 1969. My dad was Elzie Martin, he remarried in 1970 and I lost track of many of my mother's relatives, any help would be appreciated. I have often wondered if we were related to Judge Roy Bean "The Hanging Judge" from Ft. Smith Ark. as I know I had relatives from there. Thank you Randy Martin

hello fellow researcher,
I am looking for this couple in particular: Joe and Ginny GRIFFIN (all spellings). They may be siblings (which I do think they are) or a couple that was divorced. They are connected to the following families: FRAZIER (all spellings found), ALLEN, BISHOP, BIRD/BYRD COMBS,MORGAN,JONES,LEWIS,ETC..and traveled between Kentucky and Oklahoma with moving several times between the two.

In particular however, I am looking for Ginny Griffith (many different spellings) is shown in Clay County iKY in the census 1880 and single and had my ggranma (Ollie Georgie Frazier, daughter of Lucy Allen and George FRAZIER and raised by mother Lucy and JK Martin) in her house. She is listed as 'mulatto;' and in 1900 aa 'white'. It has been tradition in the famly that the Griffiths' wee registered NA and returned to Kentucky (Ginny registered Mt. Sterling?) There were ties to Oklahoma and Joe may have moved to Oklahoma at some point and stayed. It would be extremely costly for me to send for registration packets on the name 'Griffin' name with all of its multiple spellings, to try to establish ethnicity. I am hoping that someone here would have the information that is needed.

Tradition in the family also speaks of The Long Walk and The Trail of Tears. Supposedly, my family lost several during the Trail...whether they were Griffiths, Brewer, Fraziers, I don't know. All are popular names and it is expensive to obtain packets on each family.

My grandfather was born in Seminole in 1908: Willie Combs, son of Amerida and Ollie Georgie (the one mentioned above). Ollie was believe to be NA, and behind the COMBS line, the ALLENS (many relocated to OK) BIRD/BYRD, BREWERS,HENSLEY, LEWIS were also to have NA heritage. Willie was moved to and raised in Kentucky, but known that there are long distance relatives in Oklahoma that remained.

Our NA heritage and the tribes they encompassed are thought to be our heritage: Mulungeon, Creek, Muskogee, Choctaw, Lumbee, Powhatan, Seminole (?) and several small other ones as well as Cherokee.

Is anyone out there researching along with these lines? Any info most appreciated. Not knowing the Oklahoma area myself, would it better if I did research myself in the tribal research libraries? Can anyone shed any light on this for me? I am most anxious to complete this....
Muskogee Public Library

Published February 24, 2007 in Muskogee Phoenix

Now you can spread wings as you search for ancestors

By Wally Waits

Muskogee Public Library

The genealogy doors will be swinging open tomorrow at the Muskogee Public Library. Renovations in order to move into a larger space are finished. The use of two rooms upstairs for research is now a fond memory. Those rooms are empty of everything except for the ghosts of ancestors who are yet be found by researchers poring over books or peering intently at a microfilm reader. Hopefully, now that the books and film have been moved downstairs, the ghosts of the past will migrate downstairs, too. These ancestors, however, will find the research area on the first floor a more inviting place to lounge while awaiting discovery. The old research space will be renovated into a new meeting room for public use. People are naturally curious. They have been poking their heads in the doorway of the new Genealogy and Local History Room in the library. As the viewers’ eyes have swept across the large area, they have taken in the gray shelving with delight. They seem genuinely happy to see the neat, orderly rows of books on the shelves that now have space for new titles. Compact shelving was selected to allow greater use of available floor space in the room. Despite the installation of more than 2,750 linear feet of shelving, the use of compact shelving means that there is room for future growth. Additional ranges may be purchased and installed individually as needed to handle future growth. The new compact shelving means many things to the researcher. First of all, reaching for books on the top shelves now means that those items are reachable without having to search for a kick-step. Some might recall the use of cranks to roll a range of older compact shelving. The library selected to install motorized shelving in the library. The motorized controls will allow the use of a fingertip to roll a range of shelving into position. The new research area downstairs offers greater elbow room with additional study desks for patron use. Electrical outlets at the tables enable easy use of laptops. The researchers will enjoy having elbow room in which to spread their research notes out. Maybe at last, they will be able to unravel their ancestral knots they have struggled with for so long. During the past 15 years the library’s collection of genealogy and local history material has grown substantially. Members of the local genealogical community have promoted this expansion with generous gifts. By local, that does not necessarily mean just people living in Muskogee County. Such definitions as “local” and “foreign” are breaking down in the modern age of telecommunications and online connectivity. A former Muskogee girl who became a west coast columnist and Puget Sound resident is one such supporter. Another makes a sizable donation monthly out of a trust fund to build the collection. With the doors opening again, researchers who have wanted access to back issues of the Muskogee Phoenix, or to other county newspapers, will again have the opportunity to conduct their searches. Those researchers looking for accounts of their ancestors will again be able to reach up and retrieve a county history the ancestors are mentioned in. This is my farewell column for the library. A lot of people have helped me reach many of my life’s goals. While I will not name each of you individually, I want the reader to realize how grateful I am for your kindness and support. I look forward to retirement as an opportunity to give back to such a wonderful community.

My father Delmer T. Upshaw was born in C.N.I.T. 1910 census shows:
John T. Upshaw Father
Delmar Upshaw 1902
Norah Upshaw 1903
in Mchire twp.
John T. was married to Etta May Shannon in 1901 in Sharp.
Does anyone know if Mchire is the same as Spiro? Family lore has them living in Spiro.
Does anyone have information on when etta may died or where she would be buried? It was between 1903 and 1910 or any info on the Upshaws in the I.T.

I'm researching several families who settled in Haskell County in the 1880/90s. Two of the families (Thomas & Henderson) were in Cartersville in about 1885. Does anyone know the history of Cartersville?
-John Carter Thomas and wife Lue Vickers came from Mississippi (Alabama?). His father was George Thomas.
-Jasper Claborn and wife Mattie Teter came from Sebastion Co., AR but their families were from Obion Co., TN.
-Rassie Roper and his wife Melinda Kemp came from Alabama.
-Levy Henderson and his wife Nora Piatt came from Clinton Co., MO.
I have alot of info about some of these people and little on others. I'm happy to share whatever I have.

Seeking information on Nellie May SMITH – born around 1889 in Mississippi.

Nellie May SMITH married Ward Beecher POWELL in Chant, Haskell County, Oklahoma on June 4, 1908. Witnesses at the ceremony were O.E. REYNOLDS and Olie F. REYNOLDS. (Marriage Record, Office of Court Clerk, Haskell County, Stigler, OK)

Ward Beecher POWELL was born on 14 July 1883 to Jane STONE (perhaps Martha J.C. STONE) and Nathan Hamilton POWELL in Lone Mountain, Claiborne, Tennessee. (Source - Beecher’s SSN application in 1939). He died in Yucaipa, San Bernardino, CA on 22 February 1966.

Children born to Beecher and Nellie SMITH POWELL, all McCurtain, Haskell County OK:
1. Helen - b. 12 July 1909 d. 27 January 1988 San Bernardino Co., CA (husband-Dan McRae)
2.	Carl Nathan – b. 26 July 1911, d. 19 January 1951 San Bernardino Co., CA
3.	Lawrence 1914-1915 Buried in Miner’s Cemetary, Haskell County, OK.
4.	Dana James b. 21 January 1915. Married Louise Katherine Kelly. d. 3 August, 1939 in Rock Springs, Wyoming (coal mining accident)
5.	Leon Augustus b. 25 December 1918, d. 06 August 1943 Los Angeles, CA.

There is possibly a connection to a Davis family in McCurtain, although not certain.

The family moved to Wyoming prior to 1930. Nellie was granted a divorce from Beecher in October, 1930 in Thermopolis, Hot Springs Co., WY. Beecher received custody of all the children. According to family members, she traveled to Montana and married. She lived a long life and may have died either in Montana or somewhere near Fort Smith, AR. Unfortunately, no one remembers the name of the gentleman she married in Montana, nor do they remember exactly when or where she died.

I would appreciate any information regarding her parents, siblings, etc. and any other relevant information regarding Nellie May Smith Powell.

Wanting to find out anything concerning a "Poor Farm" that existed in/about 1927-30 in Haskell County. We have information that my great-great uncle from NW Ar. moved to Kinta/San Bois area to be near his brother John W. FORD after losing his farm to his son. He died about 1929 in the Poor Farm. Wanting to find out if there are any existing records on the inmates. Thanks, any information is greatly appreciated! Glynda
