Hello Custer County Researchers,

The Western Plains Weatherford Genealogical Society would like to invite you to our Sunset Cemetery Tour of the Greenwood Cemetery in Weatherford on Oct. 17th at 6:15.

Meet us at the north EAST gate & parking on Daniel Street on the east side of the cemetery to sign in & get a copy of our helpful Cemetery handout sheet. Our handout sheets cover topics such as Cemetery Etiquette, the meanings of symbols and abbreviations found on tombstones, tombstone art, translating different languages found on the tombstones, a cemetery tool kit items to include for your next research trip, learn the easy & proper way to do a tombstone rubbing & a list of helpful websites to aid in your online researching.

The tour will include stories of some of the early pioneer setters buried in the oldest section of the cemetery, including the William "Bill" Weatherford family, the Blair family & some of our Civil War Veterans buried here.
We also will share tales on the 1905 murder of Katie James & the legend of Dead Woman's Crossing. Another interesting story on the young Police Chief Bruce Rainey who was left for dead in a gyp cave south of town in the 1940's.

We will also do some tombstone rubbings with the kids. The tour will last about one hour and gates will be locked at Dark. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather. In case of rain on the 17th we will reschedule on Oct. 24th.

We hope you'll join us for a interesting & fun tour in the historical section of the cemetery. Last year we had almost 100 people attend our tours & we had so much fun doing the tombstone rubbings with the kids.
Donations are treasured to help pay for the handouts & we hope you will bring a friend or the family for a fun event & our chance to share the history of these early pioneers with the public.
