...I found a Ned CLANTON listed as the Fire Chief in Drumright, OK, back in 1958. He was listed as Chief at the time for the previous 14 years. This was taken from an article in the Oklahoman newspaper archives dated: 09-28-1958

...also Nancy was listed as living in Drumright in an article dated: 02-09-1947. Maybe you could list your query on the Creek County board, and you would get more replies...

Good Luck,

Smiley :-))
OK RAOGK Volunteer

Okay, I've seen the Varnell name, and didn't even connect it... It makes since now that you point it out to me that it is a mis-spelling of Vowell. Looking at some of the census' some of the enumerators weren't always clear with their writing, and sometimes they didn't clearify a spelling. There is also a Census that was listed as Cowell, but when I looked at the actual document, the "V" had a shorter side and was translated as a "C". Thank you for the connection. I have seen the name Gadberry in some of my explorations, but don't remember the context until I go back and see where I've seen the name before. Thank you again, the infomation you gave, gives me more threads to look at.
He is in Mannford in 1930 listed as Fate Varnell. According to his mother Sarah's death certificate, her father is listed as Gadberry. There was a family of Gadberry's in Howell Co.

Hi all. I'm looking for any information on James Lafayette (aka Fate) and Martha Vowell. They owned and ran a Merchantile in old Mannford, before the lake was put there. I remember when I was small going to the park, and walking on the foundation of the store, it isn't underwater, or at least wasn't at that time. I think they retired when the town was relocated, and they went to Sand Springs, rather than to Mannford. They lived in Sand Springs to the end of their lives. Anything that anyone may have on these folks would be greatly appreciated. They are my Grand parents on my mother's side, and I have had a very hard time finding anything about their life (My mother has passed, and what I have are the memories of a child).

Daily Oklahoman, The
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
April 23, 1939

Sapulpa Man Is Only Early Day Survivor
SAPULPA. April —

J. C. Menifee, colorful pioneer resident of Sapulpa is the only surviving trail-blazer business and industrial life in this city, who is still active.

In the late summer he will celebrate his forty-sixth year in business in this community. lie came here In 1883 and opened a general merchandising store. He was the second major storekeeper of Sapulpa.

His enterprise required the constant services of an Indian interpreter. He took the land for his business venture by fencing off a space after receiving permission from the Indian agency. This claim later became permanent, through the signature of Theodore Roosevelt.

Menifee is 79 years old. He operates a real estate office here and has turned "gentleman farmer" (or a hobby. His business career here has included stock shipping, saw milling, . the operation of a brick plant, grocery, seed, dry goods and drug stores.

He has served as frontier mayor, city commissioner several times, school board president and member and leader of numerous civic organizations.

In the early days when the Dalton gang and other outlaws frequented this sector Menifee was noted for his stand against them and for his alliance with the "Light Horsemen" of the territorial area, who fought the outlaws. He worked with the U. S. marshal service and helped clean out much prevailing territorial vice.

Menifee is Sapulpa's grand "Old Citizen" and with him resides much of the factual transitional history of this community.
I have not come across a John W. Harmon, but in the 1910 and 1920 Creek Co. census there is a family of Harmons living in farms next to each other. Loranzo and Hannah are the parents, born in Va. and Il. the sons Albert and James are in separate dwellings and most of the children were born in Missouri.
My interest in this particular Harmon family, is they are listed in Depew Creek Co. Ok. in the census but son Robert E. Harmon was buried in 1923 in Wickliffe Cemetery located half way between Spavinaw and Salina Ok. Then son James W. Harmon was buried there in 1942, later his wife Rosa was buried next to him. In 1968 (John)Earl Harmon b. 1906 was buried in the cemetery but not up by the rest of the Harmons. He was the son of Albert and Blanche Harmon according to the Funeral Record. He died in 1968.
There are several graves unmarked to the south of Robert Harmon and I am researching to find out if Loranzo and Hannah Harmon and other Harmons are buried in this cemetery and why.
If this family doesn't connect to your Harmon research, please keep it in mind while you pursue your line of research. I would like to put names on the markers on these unknowns. I am not a Harmon researcher.
Thank you.

You are most welcome. Creek County is unique, I'm sure you've read, in that Bristow marriages are kept in Bristow, Drumright in Drumright and the rest of Creek Co. in Sapulpa. Have you looked at the Creek Co. marriage records online? Oh, I just thought, one more place to look is:

http://www.odcr.com Set it to Creek Co. and Marriage licenses. I have had great success using that site to fill in information for divorces, maiden names in marriages, etc. I always use that for my source when I list the Marriage License number too.
