10-21-2009

If there is any local source available that might have an obituary notice for a MR. BRYANT B. COCKRUM (born March 1840 in Texas) who died March 6, 1932 in Tahlequah, I would appreciate the assistance of anyone who can get a copy of this obit for me. What is the name of the newspaper there and are there back issues on microfilm for this time period? Thank you. K. Canfield, who has been
named to the newly-created position of regional
geologist at Tulsa general office. His sphere
of activity now covers company's operations in
North America.

***********************

01-12-1945
p.12

Stanolind Oil Shifts Units

...
Stanolind has re-established its North Texas district
with offices at Wichita Falls; Charles R. The Mrs. was very active in the
Rotary Club and hosted many social gatherings.

Hope the obit helps you out. I am sure there would be
a much larger obit listed in the Tulsa World paper.
Cookson is a small Lake Tenkiller community and if he
lived there during this time, there would be an obit
listed for sure. However, the papers there are and
most likely were printed once a week.

May I suggest that you contact one of the Tulsa RAOGK
volunteers for a more detailed obit at:

http://www.raogk.org/oklahoma3.htm

Keith Northington has always been a wonderful contact
for me. However all of them enjoy assisting others.

Good Luck,

Smiley
☺☺☻☺☺
RAOGK Volunteer

I am sorry to say I know nothing of her but the Benjamin Brackett you speak of is my husbands family. I would love to have a copy of the statement you have. I have been working on the my husbands family for a while now and that would be a good addition to the rest of what I have. I will keep my eyes open and if I find anything about her I will let you know. Thank you so much. Kathy B

I am related to Belle Young, Thornton was killed by bushwackers along with his son William Henry during the civil war. Belle had a sister named Courtney who married a Yarborough. They all seemed to be around Booneville Arkansas. Belle is living with the Cauthrons on the 1870 census so I know her mother is possible deceased by then

Columbus J Sansing and his wife Mary Matilda Kendrick Sansing were last known to be living with their Daughter Lula Miller and her husband Morris Miller. This was according to the 1920 Census. CJ was about 74 years old at the time and Mary was only a few years younger. I can't find a 1930 census report on either of them so it's a good bet they passed away between 1920 and 1930 in Peggs, Oklahoma. I need to know if and when they passed away and where the interment was/is. Any information you have on Morris and Lula Miller, or Birtie and Jessie Sanders (Birtie is the other daughter of CJ and Mary in Peggs in 1910) would also be helpful. Thanks for any help.

No matter what some one ses, someone in this mixing pot of ethnic groups, will be agitated or not happy with what was said. It is so hard now to just talk to people. They look for fault in every word, and move you make. The Cherokee family I know, are not like that. They taught me understanding, and forgivness. I don't judge by a persons posible mis-stated words. but what they do to others and for others. none of us walk on water, till we do, mistakes are made. and we must not critisize or minamize each other. We are all in this world trying to make it the best we can. what makes us unhappy, may not affect some one els the same. Try to help and be kind. love the life we have with each other.
The story in my family goes that Elizabeth Eliza Coulter was half Cherokee.

Elizabeth Eliza Coulter (2nd from left)
Born: 16 Nov 1861 in Appanoose, Iowa, USA
Died: 4 Aug 1929 in Helena, Alfalfa, Oklahoma, USA (age 68)

The town she spent most of her life had Cherokee at the seat. And my aunt and older cousins remember going to reservations. But alas, no proof that she ever was.

A Native American friend of mine says that often Natives would hide and change their status to white.

Besides the Dawes Roll and Baker Roll, are there other places I can look?

Email: liz.pak@gmail.com

Isn' it amazing how people can insult without realizing it? Some terms used by people just cut right through me. Such as "sqaw" and "chief". Especially when I am asked "what God do you pray to?" And I am not real fond of "Indian" or "Native American" (which just means you were born in this country) we are "FIRST NATIONS PEOPLE". But hey, thanks for being so patient with the ignorance and continuing to help. I guess we should all be used to it anyway.
Cherokee Lady in Arkansas

The Watkins boys that died in the tornado at Peggs were Benjamin Floyd and Julius. Benjamin was born June 3, 1909, he was a twin to James Lloyd. James Lloyd died in 1910. Julius was born July 19, 1911. They were my great grandpas brothers. The family story is that GGreat grandma Lillie Catherine had one by the hand and carried the other, as the wind knocked her down and took them away. She was running for shelter. My dad is Mike Watkins and we live in Tahlequah, OK. THis is the family story that was passed down. I have the dates in my genealogy papers.

If a child's Parents or grandparents were enrolled members of a federally recognized tribe it is possible for them and adoptive parents (if under 18); to obtain any and all information with in his/her adoption records pertaining to their Indian Ancestry.

If the adopted child meets the enrollment criteria for a federally recognized tribe (every tribe has different policy and blood quantum Requirements); then under ICWA law it is required that the adoptive parents be provided any and all necessary information to respect and honor that childs right to be enrolled with there tribe.

Or upon turning 18, even sealed adoptions are required to provide all indian information if the adopted child were to request it.

additionally, by law that child is also supposed to recieve legal assistance to obtain adoption information and/or membership that pertains to His/her Tribe(s).

You could contact the BIA office in Phoenix Region. Sometimes, in the past they have held Phoenix documents in Riverside,CA. However they have there own Agency in AZ.

They may not be able to provide you with what you are looking for right away, however, with patience and sometimes much needed persistence they can point you in the right direction or provide contacts of individuals and/or Indian Legal Services to help aid you in obtaining your documents/information.

If you know what tribe you are then you could contact that tribes administrative offices preferably the enrollment department or Cultural/Historical Preservation Program director or what ever department those types of things are in for that tribe. Many tribes have made efforts to document family trees, however the majority of Documentation is Oral History.

Good Luck! Hope you are able to find what it is you are looking for.

Whiteside/Fisher

Adaline Whiteside, full-blood Cherokee, was probably born in Jefferson County, Illinois about 1848. The name "Whiteside" was a nickname given her family; not their true last name. Her family originally crossed on the 'Trail of Tears' and ended up in Oklahoma. Supposedly, her father was a Chief or Headman. Adaline met George A. Fisher, Native American, in Oklahoma. They left tribal land in Oklohama and married; probably in Missouri. We located a marriage license dated 1864, Jefferson County, Missouri. Adaline and George then sharecropped for a while around Sedalia, MO. Eventually, Adaline and George moved to Franklin County, Illinois and started a family. Twins William T. and Sarah, (Sarah died at birth), were born in 1869, and George W. was born in 1871. Circa 1880, Adaline died in Illinois and George moved the boys to Bell City, Missouri. He left them with relatives and departed for parts unknown, only to reappear occasionally. He worked as a horse trader and served in a Confederate Indian regiment during the Civil War.

We have found no records on either Adaline or George. Family in Missouri received land allottment information from Tahlequah in the 1950's; however, they were uninterested and discarded the letter. Any help would be appreciated. I believe the key lies in finding Adaline's true last name.

I'm looking for the parents of Sam E Moyers. He's on the 1910 and 1900 census. He was married to Tahlequah and born in 1874. Can you give any information that would confirm CJ and JD are the parents of Sam E.? Did you have any luck with the Tahlequah newspapers?

Anything you can tell me is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Clay
