Looking for information about my great-grandfather: moved to Alfalfa county sometime around WWI; apparently atempted to kill his wife, Martha (Mattie) Ann Kirby and was sent to prison; he apparently died at McAlister of pneumonia in 1931. Any info from newpaper articles about events leading to conviction and death - obituary would be greatly appreciated.

Also, obit for Martha Ann Campbell Kirby would be great, if available.

Thanks.

The company that published it sold it's atlas book line to the same company that publishes the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer. I have one of the Delorme atlases and it doesn't mark cemeteries and the detail is nowhere close to being as good. I think they bought them out just to kill the competition.

First off, anyone can put anything they want on findagrave.com with out any proof. I looked around at a few places and the only site I could find that had a cemetery for Cherokee was
http://www.okcemeteries.net/alfalfa/cherokee/cherokeem.htm
It's called Cherokee Municpal by them.
I have an atlas "The Roads of Oklahoma" In it cemeteries are marked with a symbol. There is one near Cherokee that is not on the USGS index. If you go 1 mile south of town and 1-1/2 miles east. It's on the north side of the road.

Hmmmm! How interesting. I hadn't thought to look at the actual names on the one, then compared to the other one. Anyway, I think we've proven that they are one and the same and it's up to Find A Grave now to merge them and list only the one with the correct name. We'll see how that goes this next week.
Thank you so much for all your time and help. The links you sent, especially the one that took me directly to that cemetery's listing (http://www.okcemeteries.net/alfalfa/cherokee/cherokeem.htm)
was the proof I needed along with an idea I had to go with it.

It's not that anyone can post at Find A Grave (I've been busy doing that for the past several days), but that the same cemetery is listed with two different names, and with the details for each that I enumerated in my first query.

So now I'm waiting for Find A Grave to merge the two cemeteries into one with the correct name. Only then will I post my uncle (a WW I veteran) & his two wives.

Again, thank you so much for all your time.
My records have the name of the rather large cemetery in Cherokee as the "Cherokee Municipal Cemetery" which is (as I remember) the way it is identified in the cemetery transcription book published (date?) by (who?) which I have looked at but didn't photocopy any page.

Those of you familiar with the Find A Grave site online will find TWO listings for a cemetery at Cherokee, Alfalfa County, Oklahoma -- Cherokee Memorial Cemetery, and Cherokee Municipal Cemetery.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=csr&CScn=c...

The "Memorial" cemetery currently has 211 listings and a photograph of the entrance on the main page.

The "Municipal" cemetery has 10 listings and no photograph of the entrance.

So I checked the U.S.G.S. website and called up all cemeteries listed in Alfalfa Co., OK, and was shocked to discover that NO cemetery by any name is registered by them at Cherokee, and I know for a fact that this is not a small country cemetery by any definition.

Before I bring up this subject to the Find A Grave people to ask them to merge the two cemeteries into one, I thought I should first ask the question here to be sure of the correct name and for clarification. It always complicates things when an entity has an "official" name but is popularly referred to by another name as is probably the case here.

I'm posting this to the RootsWeb Message Board for Alfalfa County which will also go out to the Alfalfa County e-mail list that I'm not subscribed to so please, please respond privately or on this Message Board.

Anxiously awaiting a knowledgeable response so I can alert the Find A Grave people, then create pages for my uncle and his two wives at Find A Grave.

Augusta

Does anyone know about Augusta, Ok. It was 2 miles West of Carmen, near where the old (removed long ago) railroad track was. It had come and gone before my time. Grandpa, Sylvester "Frank" Terrel, owned the land west of the old railroad, North of Hwy 45. Every time they plowed, they dug up old chunks of cement.

Did Augusta blow away in a storm, or just dwindle away when the railroad moved east to Carmen?
Marsha Terrel Hayes mhayes@cgtelco.net

Hi Marty,
Stumbled upon your post and have a question for you.
If your local library does not do lookups for obits, how would someone go about getting an obit? I am in CA and looking for obit on Leonard Roy Passwater (Sr.) who dies in Cherokee about Oct 2006. Would like to know where he is buried and if any other Passwater members are buried near him.
Thanks for any assistance you might be able to provide :-)
Dawn
