My grandmother was Edith married to John Joseph Cleek. Please share information you may have.

I know her mother's name was Pricey Jane Stewart and she married a Ben Hall. They had 2 children, Edith and Willy. Ben left Pricey for another woman and I believe the story says he ran off with her to California. Pricey then married a gentleman by the name of Taylor but I don't know his first name. They had 8 children together.

Ohio Geography: county formation, townships, towns, cities, maps, etc.

About nine years ago, I placed a page on my web site entitled, "Ohio Geography":

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Ancillary/Geog/OH/OH-Cos.shtml

The page includes information about county formation, names of townships, towns, cities, and villages, and township maps, etc. Apparently, people have found the page useful because it has remained one of the most visited pages on my web site, along with a similar page for PA counties.

I'm posting to announce that I've just done a major update of the page, fixing broken links and adding new links. I hope you'll find the page more useful than ever.

Hi, I am looking for anyone who might have any info that might help me in my research. i am looking for the family of William F. Robbins who had married Katherine Kelly they had a daughter Myrtle Robbins born 1-29-1905 in St. Louis Missouri. We have no info on William but do know as of 1910 he wasn't with Katherine and Myrtle who are in the 1910 St Louis Missouri census with Katherine's parents John P. Kelly and Mary (Grounds) Kelly and Frank Kelly. the Kelly's and Robbins lived quite a few years in St. Louis Missouri. Also looking for the family of John P. Kelly, we know his father was John P. Kelly who was married to a Catherine Feenie both born in Ireland. Also looking for Mary Grounds Family, her and John were married in 1879 Ohio and she was also born there. Anyone who can help, your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you....

B. Richard BURDMAN - Youngstown, Ohio

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – B. Richard Burdman, 76, a Youngstown, Ohio area attorney and real estate developer, died peacefully in his Scottsdale, Arizona home on Friday, October 30, 2009 of a long illness.

Born to Russian immigrants, Burdman was a prominent attorney who will be remembered for his commitment to his clients, his charitable activities, and his wry wit.

Richard, better known as “Dick” or “Dicky” by his friends and family, was born in Youngstown on Sept. 6, 1933. The third of four children of Harry and Doris Burdman, he grew up in a home steeped in international culture and civic participation.

After recovering from a childhood illness, he graduated from The Rayen School in 1951. He went on to complete an undergraduate degree at Youngstown State University, Youngstown, Ohio and, in 1956, a law degree at Duke University School of Law. He chose to return to Youngstown to start his career. There he met and married Babette Feldman in 1960.

After practicing for a few years with the Youngstown firm Rigelhaupt and Rigelhaupt, and then with Attorney Martin Goldberg, Dick joined several attorneys in establishing a new firm, which most recently went by the name of Burdman, Kretzer, Ellington, Stein and Marando. In 1987, the firm merged with Nadler and Nadler to form Nadler, Nadler and Burdman, which continues to operate by the same name in downtown Youngstown today.

His practice was primarily devoted to real estate, small business and taxation law. Besides his legal business, he had a significant pro bono practice, helping friends, family and others in need manage legal aspects of their personal and business affairs. Dick also partnered with his brothers, Kenneth and Ronald in a real estate development business. Burdman Brothers built and managed post offices, office buildings, shopping centers and industrial properties in numerous states in the Northeast.

Continuing his family tradition of civic service and expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to practice law, he served for years on the Duke School of Law’s Board of Visitors, and was named an honorary lifetime member. Both a faculty lounge and an endowment for public service fellowships were established at Duke as a result of his generosity. He and his wife Babette were also supporters of numerous civic organizations and Jewish community agencies in the Youngstown, Ohio area.

He was a member of the Mahoning County, Ohio, and American Bar Associations, and an honorary member of the Ohio State Bar Foundation. He also belonged to the legal fraternity Phi Delta Phi, El Emeth Synagogue, the Simon Weisenthal Center International Leadership Council, St. Albans Lodge of the Masonic Order, and numerous other organizations.

He was married for 49 years to Babette, and together they led a very active life, including travel, cultural pursuits, and a wide circle of friends across the country. For most of their adult lives, the Burdmans resided in Liberty Township. Since the 1990s, they spent increasing amounts of time in their Arizona vacation home, and eventually, six years ago, sold their Liberty residence. His retirement was equally gradual, as he continued to be engaged in his legal practice and the family real estate development business on a part-time basis for many years. The real estate business was taken over by his nephews, Lee Burdman and Jonathan Levy.

Family was always an important focus of his life, and the Burdmans had an ever-growing extended one. Dick was also a father figure to younger generations outside his immediate family, especially after the death of his brothers and others close to the family. In his last few days, letters and calls of gratitude from across the country reminded him of countless acts of kindness and guidance from those whose lives he had touched.

He is survived by his wife, Babette Burdman; his children, Linda Fine of McLean, Virginia, and Pamela Burdman of Chicago; his sister, Ina Rae Levy of Sarasota, Florida; a son-in-law, Jeffrey Fine; and two grandchildren, Max and Chelsea Fine.

Services will be held on Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Shriver Allison-Courtley Funeral Home, 292 Madison Ave.

Visiting hours with the family will begin one hour prior to the services on Monday from 1 to 2 p.m.

Donations may be made to the Doris Burdman Scholarship Fund at the YSU Foundation, 606 Wick Ave., Youngstown, OH, 44502

The recording of birth (and death) records begin in Ohio in 1867. A few counties have them for the 1856-1857 period.

From 1867-19 Dec 1908, they are located in the probate courts (some counties have given these records to the county historical society, genealogy society, or county archives.

From 20 Dec 1908-present, copies are located in the county health department as well as the Ohio Department of Health in Columbus.

The Family History Library has filmed many of the probate records and they are available for rental from your local Family History Center.

Records of births may also be found in pension records, administrations, deeds, wills, chancery records, etc.

Even if you can't find a birth certificate, depending on the county you might be able to get a copy of the log where the birth was registered. My county (Fulton) has log books listing births by date (beginning in 1867). Some older counties might have older listings.

Hi I am looking for info on James John P Kelly born feb 1853 in Delaware and he married Mary M. Grounds born Sept 1853 in Ohio, they got married 1879 in Ohio. They had 3 children. 1 unknown, Thomas Francis (Frank) Kelly born 9-17-1882 in Iowa died 11-2-1939 in Chicago Illinois, and Kathryn E. Kelly born November 1884 in Missouri. Per 1910 census Kathryn was 24 yrs old and widowed and had a child Myrtle born abt 1905 and was 5 yrs old and born in Missouri. We don't know much and have been searching for years. Frank Kelly married Anna Markowitch from PA and had 2 children Bill and Kathryn, we believe they met in PA. Kathryn we know lived in St. Louis Missouri a long time because my dad and his sister remember visiting a house that had 2 statues of lions and the livingroom possibly oriental furniture. Anyone who can help me locate anyone connected to the Kellys or Grounds I would really appreciate hearing from you...thank you...

Re: Apolonia Kurivial m Stephen Studenka

Lynda and Catherine,
I am sure I am connected to you both as well!

Lynda: Apolonia and Stephen were living in Flatrock, Henry, OH in 1920, just a few houses down from my g-g-grandparents, Joe and Karolina Tomecek (written Tomeck on the census). Karolina's mother was named Jeneve Studenka, who married John Chanack (sp?). They were also from Znorovy. I am trying to see if I can get into any microfilms for the area, but I am not familiar enough with the way the records were set up to find anything.

In addition, I have found several of my more recent Tomecek ancestors' first communion and confirmation records, and several of them have Kurivials listed. For example, my g-g-aunt, Frances Tomecek Jurasek, is listed as the patron of Mary Kurivial in 1928. So the families are closely connected. You may want to check out pilot.familysearch.org for more of these Catholic church records in Henry, Ohio.

Have you tried ordering a death certificate for either Apolonia or Stephen? I am curious as to whether Stephen's parents are listed on the certificate.

Catherine: several of my ancestors from this area also went to Michigan (mostly Juraseks). If you haven't checked out the Michigan marriage records to 1925 at pilot.familysearch.org, you should. There were several Janiceks in the records.

I hope we will be able to make more connections here! Either of you are free to email me at krisd54@yahoo.com
Thanks!
-Kristen

No, I am not related. Do you have access to Ancestry.com or do you need census look-ups? According to their census they immigrated 1887.

1900 indexed as PODOLSKE
1910 - PODOLSKI
1920 - PODOWLSKI
1930 - PODOLSKI

We've had relatives from Prussia who changed their names from MARCINKOWSKI to MARTIN (the whole family) and from AGACKI to AJAX (a couple adult children). I think it was a common practice then. I did get the records from the Cuyahoga County Courts who were very nice about it!
If you need any census look ups let me know

Re: Native American Tribe

With any native american genealogy, it's really important to figure out what tribes were in and around that area in that time frame. If you can figure out what the tribe is, then indian census, payroll records, or even court records (may show removal and land grants etc) will become helpful. Also note that collateral relative research is really important with native american genealogy. You may also find that they have a "white" name and "indian" name which could be completely different. Maybe try death certificates to see if you can pinpoint what area.

School Records Cleveland 1893

I am trying to establish what period of time someone lived in Cleveland. In is only going to be a short time but is important in my research.

They are in the Canadian Censuses in 1891.
In January 1893 they are living in Cleveland where one of their children is born.

In 1894 they are back in Canada.

They had a boy born in 1885 in Scotland.

He would have been school age when they lived in Cleveland.

I wondered if school records were accessible and what information I could get from them.

The other thing is that in Scotland one can access a book called a Valuation Roll. If you know the address you can usually find who lived there for the period of time that you are researching. Although if it is just for a short spell the record can be missed. I have the address they lived in Cleveland. Is there anything that can be checked to see how long they were at that address.

I know I am clutching at straws here. I am going in a round about way trying to prove something.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Betty

Boy, they sure couldn't keep the last name consistent! Also Andrew's DOB is way different in the census compared to his death certificate, but the home address matches up. I've seen this with another relative that immigrated as well. I found the listing for Andrew and Mary's marriage license on the Cuyahoga County Courthouse page. I'll be sending for that shortly. Hopefully that will have some information that will help.

Thanks for all your help!

Ray

I dropped my paid subscription this year to Ancestry due to the economy, so I'm not able to look up census records. I've tried looking through FamilySearch (sometimes they have them) but none for Podolski. If you could send one I would appreciate it. If possible the earliest one, Hopefully it will have the most accurate information.

Thanks!
Ray

Hi,

Thanks for your help. It's funny, I was just looking through the CPL Necrology files last night, but didn't select Podolny as a keyword search.

Alot of the names that showed up in Charles Podolski's obit are names that I have, or have been looking for. Until I saw this I was not aware of the name "Podolski". I'm wondering if it isn't the old world version of Podolny. John Podolny is my grandfather, and I've been trying to find information about his father (Andrew Podolny) and his mother (who I believe is Mary Ziolkowski)

Are you related to the Podolny's/Podolski's, or just helping out?

Ray

She had been married several times from the White to the Emery from what I was told. She had 2 daughters My mother and My Aunt Ruth. Granmother lived in Wadsworth Ohio for a number of years. She passed in winter of 1962.

Ruth was a White she was born 1906 She married Frances X. Roanan in 1935, Florida and She died in 1968 in Miami Dade Florida. She had no children.
My mother was apparently also called or according to the 1920, 1930, census Maebell and Marybeth. When ever my mother wrote her name is was spelled MAEBETH E. (Elizabeth Ellen) White/ South/ Harner. I can find no census that refers to Aunt Ruth. My Grand mother died an Emery but had been married since 14 and to several different men but 2 times each to 2 of the men and I believe Mother said Mr. Emory was one of them. My eldest brother said he thought that Mr. Emery's first name was Albert. My mother said her father was killed in a mill accident when she was a girl and she was born 1913 so I figure she had to be 7 to 10 for her to remember it as when she was 6 I found a census record that had Head 2 by grandma's name.

Hello Sandi. Been a few years since we met. I am now pursueing information that I gleened out of the 1850 Illinois Cheneys Grove census. There was an Otha Owen (2 years older)listed just prior to George Owen [making me think they lived close or on the same property]. He had married a Susan Owen. George married a Catherine Owen. Could these be brothers and sisters. I also have info that I received years back from a helen Evans in Florida. She stated that a Casiah Owen was widowed in 1829 leaving her with 5 children (3 boys and 2 girls.) The girls, Sarah and Mary were left with a gaurdian. She remarried a Joseph Lickard/Lockard [no record found]. If Otha is a brother of George, he had children named George and Uriah. Uriah is the name of Cahiah's first husband. The 1870 Illinois census shows a Sarah (presumably his sister) living with him. Does any of this make any sense.

I may be able to help you with your search for John Britsch. Johannes Bruetsch was born on 7 Feb 1851 in Buettenhardt, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He immigrated into the USA in 1880 and, according to the 1910 Census, was married to Pauline E (maiden name unknown). The couple had two daughters listed in the census. There Names are Emma A Britsch, born about 1888 and Louise S Britsch, born about 1894. If this is the family you are looking for I have information about the ancestors of Johannes. Send me an e-mail.

Werner Brutsch
