I am on the search for where my ggg grandfather is buried. I am hoping to find some that might help me with searching. Here is what I know. Henry B Wall was born in Portage, Hancock, Ohio in 1819. He married Mary Carrel. Mary was born in about 1814 in Hancock County Ohio. Henry served in the Civil War with his son Lewis L Wall, Lewis is my gg grandfather too. I have the Civil War records for Lewis, and in that it states that his father Henry died in 1889 in Kansas. Well, I can not find Henry on any 1880 Census. I have found Lewis on the 1880 census living in Richmond, Franklin, Kansas, and also on the 1885 Kansas State Census, they have moved to Sedgwick County Kansas as of that Census. Then by 1900 Lewis is Living Barry County Missouri. Also I believe I have found Henry's wife Mary on the 1880 Census living in Liberty, Wood, Ohio near her son Andrew Jackson Wall. Living with Mary is her son George W, and the name of someone else that I do not know. Mary died in 1887, not real sure where. I thought it was Kansas, but now I am thinking they may have went back to Ohio. I have a feeling that Henry may very well be buried in either Wood county or Hancock county Ohio. If anyone could help me locate his resting place, I would be very greatful.

Landon

I have just finished my overhaul of the Wood County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/wood_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Does anyone know where I can get info on who is buried at Portage Cemetery?

I was at Portage Cemetery on County Home Road on Sunday looking for my great grandmothers grave, Julia Reed Miller. It must be unmarked or I missed her tombstone, cause I could not find it. I would like to know who to get ahold of for that cemetery to ask them what plot she is buried on and maybe a map of the cemetery plots so I can visit her grave. If anyone knows the caretakers and can get me a phone number I would be most appreciative. Thanks!

Don't know where to look for this information, maybe in old city directories? I have several very old photos of children that are unidentified. Many are marked with the photography studio's name and location. I would love to find out when the studios were in business to maybe pinpoint what generation(s) of my family tree these might connect to. (Though some probably could, I can't tell by the clothing style.)

If anyone's curious, the studios are: Finzel in Weston, Dubbs in Weston, and Zimmerman in Carey (though that last one is Hancock Co, I think).

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'm looking for a long lost cousin. In the Ohio records is listed a John Dennis Menton, born 6 Jan. 1932 in Maryland. He died 4 April 1999 in an "out of state hospital", probably in the ER. He's given as a resident of Wood Co. His father is Menton and his mother's maiden name is Dawson. No first names are given for either. Any information about this person will be greatly appreciated. My cousin's father was A.Paul Menton and his mother was Jean Taylor Dawson. Hope this rings a bell with someone. Thanks, Jim Dawson

Need someone to do a marriage look up for my grandfather. Joseph Burns and Mary Hosmer were married July 8, 1940 in Bowling Green Ohio. Joseph Burns was a native from Michigan stationed at Camp Perry Ohio in 1940. I tried Ottawa county where Camp Perry is located. There is no record there. I then recall seeing something in some olf notes about being married in Bowling Green. Cpl Joseph Burns also used the surname of Norkiewicz. Marriage record may be under either Burns or Norkiewicz.
Thank you so much.
I really appreciate any help you can give!

Also, I am hoping to find Jacob's parents, Christian & Mary SWARTZ buried there, also. All four individuals died in Milton Twp. Christian died between 1860 & 1870; Mary died between 1870 & 1880 (believed to be 1871). Jacob died in 1921. Amanda died in 1910.

Surname may also be spelled SWARTS. I believe Jacob was a CW vet, so there may be a marker for that, as well.

I recently visited the "Potterstown Cemetery" now known as "Central Beaver Creek Cemetery" It is located near Weston Ohio. I was planning on transcribing the cemetery but it was rainy, mosquitoey and I was only in town for a few days. Luckily, a township board member drove by and saw us out there in the rain and stopped. He graciously informed us that he had a map and other information about the cemetery back at the township building. I was able to copy (by hand) most of the information. Mainly I got names and the year that people were buried there as well as who bought the plots and which plots they are. If you are looking for anyone in this area I may be of some help. Let me know.

He had 5 children, Mary, James, Henry Parrish, Henrietta and Charlotte.

I have not been able to get further back than James Wells, I only know his father's name and nothing else, and even that could be wrong.
(POW/MIA Korean War, Wood County, VAN NEWHOUSE

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Wood County Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: RICHARD VAN NEWHOUSE
Born: Feb. 18, 1933. Caucasian
Date of loss: Captured (POW) December 6, 1950 in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Wood County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
Does anyone know anything about the Milton U. Ensminger family who lived in Wood Co. OH in 1860? I believe he's the M. U. Ensminger who lived in Hancock Co. in 1850 married to Amanda (2nd wife) with children Corwin, Harriet, and Wellington (kids of 1st wife). In 1860 he's married to Julia (3rd wife, I guess) and has additional children Milton, Clark and John - not sure if their mother was Amanda or Julia. (in 1860 Corwin was evidently listed as Caroline and a girl!) I guess Milton U. died before 1865 when Julia married Benjamin Leonard in Seneca Co. and the kids were all over the place. John, the kid I'm interested in, born 1856, was living with Julia and Benjamin Leonard in 1870.

In 1930 Deward had remarried Tolice Post and lived in Jackson Co., Michigan, and Arthur lived with his maternal grandmother, Maggie Brown Blodgett, in St. Joseph Co., Michigan. Can't find anything about Olive. Divorced? Died? She's not in the OH death index under Olive Clifton. Does anyone know anything about these people?

I don't know what type of disability Elmira Bower had but on the 1900 it indicated that she couldn't read, write nor speak English and in the 1910 census it indicated she was "weak minded".

Does anyone have any idea what institution she may have gone to?

George M. Dalley b. 1873 Wood County, Ohio

Searching for any info on George Morgan Dalley b. 19 Oct 1873 Wood County, Ohio. I am not directly related to this person and am only trying to verify info...Here is what I know: He married Jessie Feller(s) abt 1897 Liberty Twp, Wood County, Ohio. Jessie was d/o Enos and Lucretia (Fogler) Feller(s). I can trace Jessie until 1900 census. The 1900 Census shows that Jessie has now married George M. Dalley and they are both 26y. The 1900 census shows that George was born Oct 1873 in Ohio. I cannot find either Jessie or George in subsequent census records no matter how I change the spelling of their names or where I look for them. Jessie's father's obit states that in 1914, Jessie (Mrs. George Dally) was living in Cleveland, Ohio. www.familysearch.org shows that George Dalley died in 1922 but it does not say where and there is no record of a death for Jessie...or any mention of children. The 1900 census shows a daughter, Marie, b. May 1899 but I can find no records of her other than this census.

Any help on this family appreciated so that I can verify some of this information.
I would like to correspond with anyone who knows anything about the Metsker's of Wood co, who were born in Pennsylvania. My Sarah Metsker was born in 1823 in Westmoreland, PA, of unknown parentage. She married William Long in Stark co, OH in 1841. By 1850, they were living Hancock co near some other Metsker's who I suspect are her siblings. I have been able to prove that these four other Metsker's are related to each other, but I have yet to be able to link them to my Sarah. They are:

1. Eliza, born 1817 in PA. She died after 1900 in Wood co.
2. Catherine, born 1825 in PA. She married Squire L. Edgar before 1850 and she died in Wood co after 1880.
3. John, born 1827 in PA. He married Bridget Emma Routson in 1860 and died after 1880 in Wood co.
4. Lydia, born 1840 in PA. She married Hiram Johnson in 1858 and died in Wood co after 1900.

Does anyone have death dates or any family information on these folks?

Also, I strongly suspect that Ann Metsgar, living with the Wm. Rodebaugh family in the 1850 census of Hancock family, might be a sibling as well. However, I haven't been able to find a marriage record for her or follow her through the census. She was born about 1831 in OH. Can anyone identify her?

Question about Wood County Genealogical Society???

I have been trying to submit names for research to the Wood County Genealogical Society but even though I have sent them emails and they have responded with general information - they stopped answering my emails when I told them that I had many names of family that lived in their county and that I needed help in obtaining any documents that might be in their records. I offered to send them money upfront for the research and the document copies but I never heard a response. Am I doing something wrong? I don't live anywhere near Ohio and am disabled and cannot travel to Ohio to try to get the records myself...so I don't know how else to get the records that I want. I have all of the names and most of the birthdates, some marriage information and some death information. Unfortunately, my family chose to live in Wood County from the period of 1860 until the early 1900's and there were quite a number of them...If anyone can tell me the secret of dealing with genealogical societies or this one in particular - I would appreciate any advice!!!

Seeking information on the following CORNELL family:
Gideon CORNELL, b. ca. 1798
Jane CORNELL (unknown maiden name), b. ca. 1804
Children of Gideon and Jane:
[daughter], b. 1820-1825
Jane, b. ca. 1830
Joseph, b. ca. 1832
Mary, b. ca. 1833
Sarah, b. ca. 1839

The ages are estimated from census returns. The family lived in Salt Creek township, Wayne County, OH in the 1830 census. In the 1840 and 1850 census, they lived in Weston township, Wood County, OH.

I have more info on their son Joseph and his descendants, but everything earlier than him was obtained strictly from census records. I don't have anything else yet. There are many Cornells in Ohio at this time, and many Gideon Cornells, but none that match this family.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I've been unable to link this family to any other Cornells.

Thank you,
Kurt Lively

I'm trying to get information on the family of Benjamin and Sarah J.( Macklin) Ash. They were married 1 March 1866 Henry County, Ohio. Sarah died 2 May 1876, Wood County, Ohio, and is buried in the Pottertown Cemetery, Wood County, Ohio. Benjamin remarried in 1877 to Catherine______?
From the 1870 census it list a son for Benjamin and Sarah, Washington Ash born 1867. On the 1880 census it list Washington living with Daniel Corfman and family. He was 13 years old. This Daniel Corfman family was living with Benjamin Ash family on the 1870 census.
What I would like to know is if Benjamin and Sarah Ash had any more children, and what was the connection of these two families.

William H. Rolston (Ralston) and Caroline Hay, his second wife, had five children. The family resided in Wood Co., Ohio from about 1871 to sometime past the 1880 census. By 1900 the parents had removed to Arcada Twp., Gratiot Co., Mich.. None of the children are living with them. The two daughers, Anna (b. ~1875) and Etta (b. ~1879) had likely married. Is there a marriage record in Wood Co. for either of these two daughters?

Hello, I'm seeking any information on my dad's brother who was born Richard Hawley, on 8/24/1930 in Freedom twp. Wood county.

My dad's family moved back to michigan from Ohio in 1930, and there is no trace of Richard. So I'm unsure if he died as an infant before they came to michigan or if they just gave him away because they had too many. I would love any information on this Hawley family anyone can find or has.

Mother and Father Hawley were either Sarah or Lillian (she used both names) and he was LC, Leonard or Carl (he used all 3).

They had several children born in ohio, Geneva or Genevieve, Betty, Jonnie, Phyllis, Waneta or Juanita, James, Calvin and Richard.

I've been researching my dad's family for years with no luck, it's all brick walls, so any help or information is greatly appreciated.

Jane BUGH, born abt 1815 in Ohio

My fourth Great Grandfather, John (Johannes) Adam HELLER had several wives.
Today I received a copy of his marriage to Jane BUGH on November 21, 1867 in Wood County, Ohio.
By the 1870 census all I find is Jane E Heller, age 54 and no husband, and she has one child listed with her, Jane Bugh, daughter age 11 (born about 1859).
So I am guessing that Jane was previously married to a man named BUGH and they had this daughter.
Then maybe he died and she remarried to my John HELLER.
I am also guessing that John Adam HELLER may have died sometime between 1867 and 1870, that's if the Jane Heller I find in the census was in fact his widow.
I have been unsuccessful in trying to find Jane BUGH in the 1860 census to find the name of a previous husband, and do not find her as Jane HELLER after 1870 either.... (she may re-marry again before 1880).
Does anyone have information on this Jane (maiden name unknown) BUGH?
Is there a cemetery listing book for all of Wood county in existance?
if so, can someone look see if John Adam HELLER is listed, please?
I have many birth dates for him from various sources...
He was baptized 1811 in Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania
