James Monroe Taylor was my GG grandfather and according to his death certificate, was born in Burbank, Ohio on Sept 24, 1861. His father was listed as Daniel Taylor, also of Ohio. Mother was listed as "unknown".

James Monroe Taylor married Emma Seabrook in Winnebago County, IL, on December 1, 1884. They moved to Wausau, WI, soon after and lived there until they died.

I am trying to find out more information about siblings, parents, etc. Thank you!

Kris

Hi. I certainly would be. My Smiths living in the Wooster/Wayne area include David and wife Mary, sons Daniel and his wife Mary, son David Jr. (later moved on to Sandusky Co., but some of his children were born in Wooster Twp. and first wife Phebe [nee Begun] died 1810 and may be buried there), son Azariah Smith (buried Wayne Co., plus at least two of his three wives, Wealthy and Ruth), granddaughter Lucretia Smith Franks, and lots of folks named Warner, the Warner branch having stayed in the area well into the 20th Century.

I haven't been to that cemetery. I live out of state, but plan to visit it on my trip this summer. I have found many wonderful people in Ohio who love to assist those of us who are looking to connect with our roots. I'm looking for a lost grave there also. Many of the old stones are hard to read, but sometimes you can make out a few letters. Thanks to everyone in Wayne County, OH, who maintain the records, cemeteries, and history. Your dedication is priceless!!

There was a William PRETSMAN married to one of Conrad KIME's daughters (we think it was Maria/Mary, b. ca 1798). In 1830, they were living in Norwegian Twp, Schuylkill Co, PA.

A group of folks from Schuylkill Co, PA, migrated to Wayne Co, OH, ca 1828... among them REPPs, KIMEs, NIESWENDERs, BENGINGERs, and more. William PRETSMAN is said to have moved to Ohio ca 1837. We have been unable to locate Wm on an 1840 census.

The Wayne County DAR has identified two unknown graves listed as patriots in Canaan township. One is in Canaan Bend and one in Jackson Presbyterian Cemetery. Several of the Smith families of Wayne County lived in Perry and Fayette County PA prior to 1820. Several marriages are recorded in Lutheran church records there.

David Smith (senior), the Revolutionary War veteran, is buried in Canaan Bend Cemetery according to a number of other records I have found. Either he never had a headstone, or it has vanished. His wife, Mary (died 1833), does have a headstone. I assume his grave is probably next to hers.

Peggy,

Many thanks. None of the marriages is the one I'm looking for. However, Daniel Smith was a son of David Smith senior (and oddly, his mother's maiden name was also Mary Tryon -- I'm still trying to link either one of the Mary Tryons to any of the many Tryons around at the time). I didn't know about Amber Smith, nor of William N's wife Mary.

I live in southern England, so if you have anything that needs tracking down here, I'm more than happy to return the favor! You can send me a message via Ancestry.com.

Thanks again,
Laurie
In the book "75 Years of Wayne County Ohio Marriages 1813-1888": There are 4 David Smith-David married Franey Flory 12-30-1838 in Chester Twp; David married Sarah Ann Adams 3-30-1848 Canaan Twp; David married Mrs Mary E Helmick 5-7-1864 in Chippewa Twp; David M married Sarah Eshelman 8-28-1855 in East Union Twp. There is a Daniel married Mary Tryon on 4-6-1820 in Chippewa Twp.

I checked the cemetery book published in 1975 for Canaan Bend there is no David Smith listed. Amber Smith d/o D & M died 8-4-1833 age 12; Dainiel died 3-28-1863 age 76; Daniel W died 2-17-1855 age 30; Mary w/o Daniel died 4-18-1865 age 66 yrs 2 mos; Mary (w/o David S) died 3-31-1833 age 72; Mary M (w/o William N) died died 7-23-1875 age 28.

We photographed that cemetery also and there are 10 or so grave stones that are not legible.
Peggy

Wow, thanks for all that. No, that David is another. The David I was asking about did have a son named David, but David junior and his family moved on to Sandusky County in 1833 and he died and was buried there in 1849. It's the one place in Ohio I've visited! I will definitely get ahold of the will/estate papers you mention.

The David Smith I was asking about was a Methodist -- there is a 'complaint' about him and his sons in a history of Tuscarawas County (where they lived for a year before moving on to Wayne Co.) poaching from the Moravians there. (David was one of seven children and all six others plus the parents became Moravians.) His wife is buried in Canaan Bend Cemetery, and I believe he is also but his stone appears to be missing or totally illegible.

You wouldn't happen to know anything about other vital and marriage records in Wayne Co., would you? David Smith junior's second wife probably died there (I have no idea what her name was), and his first son by his third wife was born in Wooster Twp in 1821, so I've always hoped I might find a marriage record of David and his third wife Hannah Ames (my GG grandmother).

Found in book "Will Abstracts, Estates and Guardianships, Wayne County, Ohio" published 1996 for Wayne County Genealogical Society. Page 48 has #199 Smith, David 1831 oct 10, administrator Daniel Smith, bodman Nathaniel Edmonds, Abner Ray $400; appraisers Jesse & Moses & Joshua Warner. S104 Journal 4-515. That infomation is kept at the Wayne County Courthouse, downtown Wooster. There were plans to place all that material on microfilm a few years ago. You might want to contact the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster. They have a wonderful genealogical department, the ladies there are very helpful. They have a website.

Also a David Smith is buried at Jackson Presbyterian Cemetery in Canaan Twp. The dates are 1830-1896, could it be a son of your David? There is also a stone for a Mary Smith that was unreadable in 1975 when the information was gathered and published in "Wayne County, Ohio Burial Records".

My sister and I photographed some of that cemetery and posted the pictures on FindAGrave it has David (1830-1896) grave. Good Luck.

Hello, I just found my Revolutionary War grandfather. To obtain a date of death, you might try the Revolutionary War Pension Records at the National Archives. Also, you might go online with DAR (Daughters of America). They can verify if he was a verified soldier of record (they don't have every soldier listed). Good luck. Tim

My probable great great great grandfather, David Smith, died between January 1831 and 1833 probably in Canaan township, Wooster County Ohio. He had served in the War of Independence and in 1831 he still had a wife living named Mary. He was a silversmith in the area, but lost the means of livelihood in 1829 when a fire destroyed his premises and all his smithing tools. Could anyone help with the name of the cemetery where he and his wife might be buried, or a photo or transcription of their headstone(s)? If there is a local history available that mentions him, I would be very happy to hear of it! I have been searching for this man for nearly 50 years!

Do you still have access to the book with burials at Easton Memorial Cemetery? I'm looking for relationships among the McElhenie families. Like who did Nancy C. belong to and what exactly was her age at her death? I'm wondering about if William was buried there (not on FindAGrave). I'm looking for the Thomas DeArmond McElhenie born 1849 and who his parents were (from Wooster, I think). Thank you!

I'm looking for any kind of marriage record (and wife's maiden name) between a Daniel W. SMITH (born 1825 in or near Canaana Twp., Wayne County to Daniel SMITH and mother Mary Tryon, died 17 Feb 1855, buried in Canaan Bend Cemetery). Daniel W's wife is known to me only as Mary J. They had one child, William A. SMITH, born about 1854 most likely in Wayne County, died 20 March 1856 and also buried in Canaan Bend. I assume that Mary, if she survived husband and child, probably remarried.

Possibly these people were members of the United Brethren, though whether of the Moravian United Brethren or the later and unrelated United Brethren I can't say. I'd be grateful for any information anyone can give me.

Hello, I am looking for the birth record of John Jackson Cameron, born c.1872 in Wooster, Wayne County, Ohio. However, I've had little luck finding anything on him, or his parents, or why they were in America.

His mother was Agnes b.1846 in Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, and in 1881 and 1891, they both show up on the Scottish Census. But I have had no luck finding his father, or his mother's maiden name, and so I am currently stumped.

If anyone can lend a hand, I'd be very grateful.

Also, if you find a John Archibald Cameron b.1872 in Wooster, Ohio - it isn't him. Two totally different families.

Snapps, thanks again. I found the death certificate on Harriet Thompson at seekingmichigan.com . Harriet sits astride an intersection of 4 different researchers trees so this has been most helpful. The Tidwell, Burge, my Thompson and PFT Thompson trees all cross lines with Harriets father William Thompson. A real pioneering bunch and no suprise to find her in the "Pioneer" section of the East Amboy Cemetery. Thanks again. I've added as much as I can find so far to my own online tree at Ancestry.com "Descendants of John and James Thompson".

Thanks, Harriet was a dead end in my tree as well as several other people researching this line. Our detailed trees are posted online at Ancestry.com. Mine is titled "Descendants of John and James Thompson. I never could find that death certificate you mention. The database I saw started after Harriet's death. But then I may be reading it wrong.

Terry Thompson
