The death of Capt. David Brown (Aug 5, 1900) of Beverly removes one of the remaining few, who were prominent as commanders of steamers on the Muskingum and Ohio rivers back in the fifties and sixties. He was first known here and along the river as chief engineer of the steamer, Empress, owned and commanded by Capt. Geo. Cox. Afterwards he was engaged in the same capacity on the steamer Cheviot and on the retirement of Capt. McIntosh he succeeded to the command and continued as master until the boat was sold and left the trade. In 1857 in company with the late Capt. Ed Martin, he built the Lizzie Martin which was built for the Pittsburg and Muskingum river trade but later was run as a daily packet between Zanesville and Marietta until sold off the river early in the years of the Civil War. Capt. Brown then bid farewell to the river and engaged in business on shore in Beverly where he has continued to reside ever since.
Capt. Brown was a popular commander and a gentleman whom it was a pleasure to meet, always genial and pleasant, shedding in daily intercourse with friends and neighbors a life and cheer that will be sadly missed. Of those who owned or commanded steamers on this river in the day that Capt. Brown stepped ashore, now thirty-eight years ago. There is but perhaps but one living and he resideing in the same town so long the home of the lamented Capt. Brown.
