This is long but the more information I can give and show how I have arrived at the point where I am I think will help people determine if they have other information and/or are cousins! There are a number of Clarks in Warren County in this timeframe but I don't know how they are related.

I am trying to find out the parents of Samuel Richard Clark who later in life said he was born 27 Aug 1840 near Twenty Mile Stand in Deerfield Twp, Warren County, Ohio. Apparently later in life he stated the following because it is what was written up by someone in his obit: 1) That his father died of "well damps" when he was a year old, 2) that soon afterward he and his mother moved to Ripley County, Indiana, 3) that From the time he was nine years old until he was about 24, he was the man of work on his mother's farm, and thus developed a sturdy, reliable, independent character.

However, upon studying Census Records it appears there was more that happened in his life than these facts reveal. On the 1860 Indiana Ripley County, Jackson Township Census, Page 28 (192/192) there is a Samuel Clark 21 years old (born about 1839) living with Elias C. Williams 67, Roxanna Williams 62, Elias Williams 15 born in Indiana, David W. Williams 11 born in Indiana, Josephine Scull 14 adopted and born in Ohio.

Now, assuming that this is the same Samuel Clark as my Samuel Richard Clark this shows several things: (1) He was most likely born earlier than he later recorded; (2) His Mother must be Roxanna and she remarried, which is NEVER mentioned in his obit, to Elias C. Williams and (3) she had more children (whom are also NEVER mentioned in his obit).

The next record on this Census is the family of the Uncle of the woman whom my Samuel Richard Clark marries (she is found living with her grandparents - her parents are deceased - 42 households further down the Census but same Twp, etc.) which gives them a way to have met.

Assuming that this is my Samuel Richard Clark, then one can track back to the 1850 Indiana Census, Ripley County, Jackson Twp, page 371 and find Elias C. Williams 54 (a school teacher) with wife Roseanna 43, and children: Mary A. Williams 16 born in New Jersey, Samuel R. Williams 14 (which means born about 1836) born in New Jersey, Isaac Williams 9 born in Indiana, Elias C. Williams 5 born in Indiana, and Davis W. Williams 1 born in Indiana. This would appear, for the most part, to jive with the 1860 Record and make this the same family. The Census Taker made a few errors of last name, at least for Samuel R. as a Williams rather than a Clark. Further research reveals that Elias C. Williams had been married twice before Roxanna so it must be determined if "Mary Williams" is a Williams or a Clark with another misindentification by the Census Taker. An 1840 Indiana Ripley County, Jackson Twp, page 124 Censu Record shows Elias Williams with a male and a female both in the 30-40 years of age category and no one else; husband and wife with no children it would appear. Now, Mary could still be his child but living somewhere else if she was the child from his first marriage rather than the second marriage which is the one that would show in 1840.

Now, if my Samuel Richard Clark was born in 1840 then a 1840 Census Record in OH, Warren County, Deerfield Twp, page 206 Line 1 fits the family:

However, if he was born earlier as indicated in the 1850 and 1860 Census Records, and if his father died when he was about one year old, then his father would have been deceased before the 1840 Census. Then another record on the same page of the 1840 Ohio, Warren County, Deerfield Twp Census Record would be he and his widowed Mother, Roxanna, as well as more children (siblings?) which are never mentioned in his obit later in life:

Is his Mother Roxanna? Was Samuel Richard Clark born in 1840 and his father then deceased in about 1841 or 1842? Was his father, then, the Samuel Richard Clark on the 1840 Census?

Or was Samuel Richard Clark born before 1840 and his father deceased before 1840 and therefore the Roxanna Clark on the 1840 Census is his widowed Mother?

Did he not get along with his step-Father and half-siblings or why was there NO mention of them in his obit? They all seem to have stayed in Ripley County, Indiana with their parents even though Samuel Richard Clark moved on to other places finally settling in Kingman County, Kansas.

Is any of this correct? Who are Samuel Richard Clark's parents?

Elias C. Williams, Sr. and Roxanna Williams are buried in Flat Rock Cemetery in Jackson Twp, Ripley County, Indiana. Her headstone says she was born in 1808. This jives with the ages she gave on the 1860 and 1850 Census Records stated above. It jives with age of the wife for Samuel R. Clark on the 1840 Ohio Warren County Deerfield Twp Census Record but NOT the record on the same page for Roxana Clark whom it states was born 1790-1800; for what that's worth. Buried there also are 23 other members of the Williams family spread over several generations - Elias and Roxanna being the oldest. There are also Clarks buried in the Cemetery but have not been able to link them to my Clark family.

Samuel Richard Clark ended up in Kingman, Kingman, Kansas and he is buried there which is also where his wife is buried although they are NOT buried togethe since he is buried in the Civil War Soldiers area of the Cemetery (none here are buried with their spouses).

If any of this information fits in with yours OR you know of any cemetery record for a male Clark that fits the time frame and location (Deerfield Twp area) OR a birth record for a Samuel Richard Clark that nails down when he was actually born and/or who whose parents were, OR anything else helpful, PLEASE let me know. This is about to drive me crazy! (Verne Ross Clark and I have been/are in touch as we are searching the same Samuel Richard Clark and are cousins.)

I am related to Roxanna Scull, and I am very interested in any information you have about her life before she married Elias Williams. I know she married a Clark (and had two children, Mary A and Samuel R), but I don't know Mr. Clark's first name or anything else about him. I know nothing about a marriage to a Connett. I think her father was Abel Scull (since she lived next door to him, as a widow, in the 1840 census in Deerfield Ohio), and I think this was the Abel Scull born 1784 who married Mary Cobb born 1784, but it would be nice to have this confirmed.
