Update: Old Vinton Co. Schools

I have just finished my overhaul of the Vinton County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/vinton_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.
Obit. Lkup- Lloyd Gene Eads- Died May 23rd, 2008 New Plymouth

I am needing someone who will do a lookup for me, I tried viewing the local newspapers and they are apparently unable to be accessed unless I subscribe to them, which I have no intention of doing for just one obituary that may or may not even be there.

I am looking for an obituary for my Uncle, my dads brother:

Lloyd Gene EADS aka Teddy EADS
(b) 22 July 1934- Bernie, Missouri
(d) 23 May 2008 New Plymouth Ohio
He lived and died in New Plymouth Ohio. My dads family were not very close since my dad passed away in 1993, we didnt even know that my uncle passed away until I found his death listed in the Social Security Death Index. I would appreciate it if someone local there would be willing to search and see if they can find his obituary. He was the son of: Columbus Franklin EADS and Bertha Mae HARTLINE-EADS

I am looking for any information on Eva Robb Notestine Spencer. b. 1873 in Vinton County. Daughter of Samuel Robb and Lydia Davis. First husband's last name was Notestine (two children by him--Harley and Clarence). SUPPOSEDLY her second husband was Frank Spencer of Canton and they had 2 daughters named Dora and Dorothy, but I have found no census recrods to confirm this. I am wondering if I have the last name (Spencer) wrong. Any information would be a blessing!
This means she was most likely a month pregnant when they got married.
They are not in the 1880 census and their daughter Lydia is living with her grandparents in Vinton County.
Lydia married before or around 1893 to John Rearly and lived in the Chillicothe Ohio area. She died while staying with her Aunt in Columbus and is buried in a Chillicothe Cemetery.
Any help is welcome.
Cindy

Hi. I'm still looking for a 1870 census report in Athens, Perry, Vinton, or any surrounding county for charles Carrigan. Name may have been spelled differently, I'v seen a few variations down the line. He would have only been a year old in this census, so he would have been listed with his parents. I have them as James and Ellen Carrigan. I'm trying to find out what I can on Charles' parents. I know is father came from Ireland and his mother from Pennsylvania, but I don't know what towns or anything else about them. My email is caren_34420@yahoo.com if you wish to email me directly. I appreciate anyones help with this.
Thank you
Caren Detgen

Im looking for a birth record for Charles Lisamore Carrigan that may have taked place in Vinton County. He was born Dec 9, 1869. His fathers name was james or Patrick and his mothers name was Ellen. I had thought he was born in Perry county but can find no record of it there and I know his wife Eliza jane Search was born in Vinton county. Now I'm told they may have been born in the same county. I would appreciate if anyone could do a birth lookup for either of them. Eliza was born in Feb 1873. I don't have the exact day for her.
Please e-mail me at cdetgen@aol.com if anyone finds any records for them. Also could someone check the census reports closest to their birth years for them in Vinton county?

Thank you very much
Caren Detgen
cdetgen@aol.com

This couple is on several Vinton Co census. Margaret was first married to James Whitlatch & appears on the 1850 Adams Co, OH census. Apparantly after 1853 James dies and before 1860 Matilda married John Bagley & moves to Vinton Co. John appears on all census as younger than Matilda. On I think the 1880 census the Whitlatch children are listed as Bagley. Through Cornelius b.ca 1853 they are Whitlatches. Almost any information someone could give me would help.
Searching for a connection to Brooks

I have been searching for a connection to other Brooks in the Athens , Meigs, & Vinton County area. I am descended from Archibald Brooks of Vinton County Ohio. I had posted a lot of times before under the impression that Archibald's father was also named Archibald and that he was born in 1802.
I have since found there is no basis for this assumption, I got this info from another researcher who has not told me where that info came from.
I now am almost positive that his parents are Andrew Brooks & Roxenah Morrow. Andrew married Roxenah in 1827 in Meigs County. They are next door to Archibald in the 1850 census.
Andrew & Roxenah with most of their children moved to Van Buren county and surrounding counties in Iowa, by 1880.
Now Andrew was born, according to census, about 1797 in PA. He has to be the son of one of the original Brooks brothers who came to the Athens / Meigs County area's. Of that I am still trying to connect.
Does anyone have a child in their family tree that has that approximate birth date, but no name? Or maybe goes by another name and has no further info?
I can't beleive that everyone who has researched so well with names and dates, has not found Andrew in their family tree. Or has not seen his name written somewhere. He has to go by another name in someone's info.
Children of Andrew & Roxenah are Joel S who married Mary Markham (moved to Iowa after 1870), Rachel who married John Bacus (moved to Iowa after 1870), Rosetta who married David Weisenburger (moved to Iowa after 1870), Isaac Franics who married to Hester Evans (moved to Iowa after 1870), Phillip Brooks who married Mary Smith (moved to Iowa after 1870), Andrew J who married Mariah Quarterman, in 1860 census, but unknown where they after that. Another son might be Norman Brooks who married Sarah Lightfritz. He stayed in Athens Ohio area.
Has anyone seen any of these names in their family tree?
Cindy

Searching for my Scott Connections in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky

I am trying to find Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio Scott connections, in hopes of, finding my GG Grandfather’s parents, siblings, and cousins. My GG Grandfather, John B. Scott has been stated as being born in Kentucky and Ohio. In the 1850 and 1860 Census has him born 1811 in Kentucky and 1870 Census has him born 1807 in Ohio. He is not found in 1880 Census. This leads me to believe he died between 1870-1880. His wife, Mary Hannah-Scott was listed as Widowed in 1880 Census and is living with daughter and son-in-law.

My father always told me my GG Grandfather was from Ohio. He was from Rising Sun; which, is in Indiana now. At one time, Rising Sun was part of Ohio State. I am wondering, if at one time, this may have also, been a part of Kentucky State. Maybe, this is why he is listed as being born in Ohio and Kentucky. There is a small section between Rising Sun and Cincinnati that is now Kentucky. So I am searching Dearborn County, Indiana, Ohio County, Indiana, Switzerland County, Indiana, Hamilton County, Ohio, Montgomery County, Ohio, Miami County, Ohio, Vinton County, Ohio, Boone County, Kentucky, Kenton County, Kentucky, Campbell County, Kentucky, Allen County, Kentucky, and Warren County, Kentucky in search of Scott relatives.

I am also, wondering about Miami. My father mentioned Miami Tribe my GG Grandfather belonged to. He is not listed on any Dawes Rolls. I have searched there, as well. There is Miamitown outside Cincinnati, Ohio in Hamilton County and there is a Miamisburg, Ohio outside of Dayton in Montgomery County and then there is Miami County above Dayton, Ohio. I have even heard stories of Seminole’s from Miami, Florida. I have another Scott family friend where her family is from Vinton County, Ohio. Haven’t been able to connect the two families, yet. Also, there is a story from a cousin that said my GG Grandfather was in Kentucky and boarded a train near what is present day Bowling Green, Warren County, Kentucky and came to Indiana before his marriage to Mary Hannah in 1838. I do not know exact time line. I do know of another family who’s ancestry was on the same train. They died in route to Indiana and didn’t make it. So, I know the story is true. Now, for what reason he was in that location; I do not know. It may even be possible that he was born in the Warren County, Kentucky area. Also, he may have had a 1st marriage with Mary and John not being married until 1838 in Dearborn County, Indiana. John would have been 27-31 years of age and Mary would have been 24 years old. Mary could have even had a 1st marriage. I don’t know.

My GG Grandmother Mary Hannah was born in Pennsylvania in 1814. Her parents are listed as being born in Delaware. I have been unable to locate any of her family either. Also, I have found a James Scott living with John and Mary in 1870 Census. I do not know, if this is a son, nephew, or cousin. This is the only Census I have found him.

Any help or suggestions would gratefully be received in helping solve the mystery of finding my GG Grandparent’s family. Email me at debby_scott@yahoo.com. Thank you for any help.

Debby Scott

Descendants of John B. Scott

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN B.2 SCOTT (UNKNOWN [FATHER OF JOHN B. SCOTT]1 ?) was born Bet. 1806 - 1811 in Kentucky/Ohio, and died Bet. 1870 - 1880 in Daviess County, Indiana. He married MARY HANNAH October 04, 1838 in Dearborn County, Indiana, daughter of UNKNOWN HANNAH and UNKNOWN?. She was born 1814 in Pennsylvania/Indiana, and died Aft.1880 in Daviess County, Indiana.

More About JOHN B. SCOTT:
Died 2: Aft. 1870, sometime, after 1870; don't know when. He is in 1870 Census for Daviess County, Indiana. He was not living in 1880 Census for Daviess County, Indiana
Burial: Bet. 1870 - 1880, High Rock/Mt. Zion Cemetery, Daviess County, Waco, Indiana
Cemetery Book: High Rock/Mt. His wife Mary is living with daughter in 1880 listed as widowed.
Location Notes 1: My father told me our line of Scott's are related to Scott's in Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, North/South Carolina, Pennslyvania, and possibly Virginia.
Location Notes 1b: Scott families Migrated from Pennsylvania & the Carolina's to Kentucky. Some stayed in Kentucky; others went to Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Indiana.
Location Notes 2: Bef. 1838, A cousin said John boarded a train near present day Warren County, Bowling Green, KY and came to Indiana.
Location Notes 3: There is a town Scottsville in Allen County, Kentucky near Owensboro, Kentucky
NOTE: John middle name maybe "Bruce". It is possible, since we have two other Bruce's. My brother's name is Bruce and his son's middle name is Bruce. It would stand to reason that my dad could have named him after his GG Grandfather's middle name of Bruce.
NOTE 2: In 1870 Daviess County, IN Census; states John B. was born est. date 1806 in Ohio
Number of Children: 6-7
Occupation 1: Bet. 1850 - 1870, Farmer

More About MARY HANNAH:
Burial: Aft. 1880, High Rock/Mt.
I recall a post a while back from someone who's husband was in the process of photographing all the stones in Elk Cemetery. Just wanted to see how things were going and ask if they needed some help in completing the project. I'd be glad to take a section on if I knew what had been done already.

Thanks,

Mark

David F Bishop

I am researching a David F Bishop for my Aunt. I know he was born on Nov 28 1864 to Harry and Elizabeth (Mercer) Bishop and was married to Carrie W Newton Mar 11, 1893. He died on Aug 17 1904 (buried in Locust Grove Cemetery) 3 days before their daughter Lena Meridith was born on Aug 20 1904. I was wondering 2 things, 1) what did he die from? and 2) what did he do for a living? If there is anyone out there that can share that info or more with me I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance, Rob Schrader

What I have is very sketchy at this time and only have names of Williams parents so any info would be greatly appreciated.

Linda Hopkins

Francis E. Shades

I am searching for more information for Francis E. Shades who was listed in the 1850 and 1860 census as being Sheriff of Vinton County. The family bible says that he died May 1883 in Logan, Ohio. I would like to be able to get information about him, where he is buried, cause of death, and parents. If anyone could help I would appreciate it very much. Thank you.

Need Courthouse record look up please

Hello,
Would someone please on their next trip to the courthouse search out a couple records for me?
I have a marriage of a David Hill and Martha Brooks. License issued July 3, 1872 and married on July 6, 1872.
I was told there was something called a Marriage return in some counties. I do not know if this was a year in which they had these.
On the copy of the license I got it is split into 3 sections. 1st is PARTIES, 2nd is AFFIDAVIT, and 3rd is RETURN.
If this is the only return there is then ok. But I was told that sometimes there is a return where the parties involived would tell whether this was a first marriage or a second one, and parents names.
I also need to know if this could died in Vinton County. I beleive that they had a daughter named Lida in Vinton County but after that there is no mention of David and Martha, and after 1880 census I cannot find Lida.
There is another David & Martha Hill in Vinton County and the maiden name of the wife is wrong. Strangely enough she has the right birth date to be my Martha Brooks.
Thanks in Advance
Cindy

Marriage Verification

I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can maybe verify if a marriage took place. I am only going by information that is written on head stones of children and the fact that these two people appear to live on neighboring farms in the 1880 Census for Vinton Cty. They are David F. Bishop (1864-1904) and Carrie W. Newton (1869-1935). From the ages of the children and the 1880 Census I am thinking they would have married between 1885 and 1895. If there is anyone out there that may be able to shed some light on this I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance, Rob Schrader

Looking for the sons of John JACKSON b in Maine who was in Elk Twp, Athens County, 1820. He had 2 sons 1 under 10, (probably born in Ohio) and 1 10 and under 16, (probably b in Maine), on the 1820 census. He disappears. I have hit a brick wall, researching any male Jackson I can find during that time frame.
He had several daughters, found two; Lydia who m Elias Myrick, and Rebecca who m Freeman Myrick. Unable to find the names of the others.
Since Elk Twp, was included in Vinton Co in 1850, thought maybe some one knows of this family. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm searching for background information on John E. Cottrell who appears on the 1880 census for Vinton Co. to determine if he is connected to the John E. Cottrell (sometimes spelled Cottrill) I am researching who was born in Ohio in 1864. By 1910, John Cottrell was living in Putnam Co., WV; many of the families who settled in this area of WV came from Vinton, Athens, Meigs, and Gallia Counties.
The John I'm researching married Virginia Unknown before 1885. She was b. abt. 1864 and died in 1904. John and Virginia had at least three children: Catherine Ann "Annie" Cottrell, b. abt 1885, who married Aldophus "Dock" Billups; Homer Judson Cottrell, b. 1888, who married Adda Harbour; and an unknown male Cottrell, b. abt 1893.
John's second wife was Victoria Billups, d/o Charles and Dortha D. Billups, whom he married in WV. Victoria was born about 1869. John and Victoria did not have children.
I would appreciate any information that might help me to determine if there is a connection between these two John Cottrells. I have information on descendants of Homer J. Cottrell and Annie Cottrell Billups I will be happy to share if it would be helpful.

I recently purchased a wonderful cabinet card photo identified on the back as Maud Hawk Hawks of Vinton County, O. The photo was taken by L. E. Kratzer Photography located at 219 Silver Street in Lebanon, Ohio. Maud has very short bangs, and her hair is styled behind her ears. She is wearing eyeglasses. The dress has a high neck and very large sleeves. There are also four large buttons on the bodice along with a small pin on the collar. I would like to connect this photo with her family or a family researcher. Please contact me directly if you have an interest in this photo.

Kathy Wieland in St. Louis, MO
Kathy@craftsbykathy.com

Mary "Polly" Stevens married Archibald Ankrom in 1854. On the 1850 US Census of Vinton Co. John Stevens age 26, wife Mary 24, David 2 and Margaret 1 were living near Archibald. Also living with John Stevens family were William Stevens age 60 [stated to be b. OH, but prob incorrect], Polly Stevens 12, and Jesse Stevens 15. I suspect that Polly and Jesse are siblings of John and that all are William's children, but no proof. In 1860 vinton Co., OH, Archibald 23 and "Polly" 22 are living by these same Stevens, with their first 2 children Margaret age 3 and Thomas age 2. Now John Stevens is 37 b. OH, wife ? hard to read age 25, David 14, Margaret 11, ? male 9, ? female 6, Thomas 4 and Mary 1 along with William 67 [stated to be born in, it looks like NY - hard to read.] Next to them is Samuel C. Stevens 32, Maragret 30, ? male 8, Sarah E. 6, ? Will ? 4, and Samuel 9/12ths. Does anyone know any more about this Stevens family and where they come from?
