I am trying to find the father of my grandfather's half-sister. My aunt, Cladie, was born in 1909 in Van Wert County to Mary Louisa Hudson 1889-1924. Cladie's last name is listed as Ramsey but their is no mention of the father. Mary Louisa was not married but was living w/ a Charles RAMSEY in the Van Wert County, 1910 census. Charles is noted as a widow, born ca. 1874, and has 5 other children from his previous marriage. John W., Bermalda, Floyd D., and two other unknown children.
Mary Louisa is listed as their housekeeper.

Any help would be greatly appreciated in helping me solve this mystery. :-)

Looking for an F.O. Current, plus other surnames

I'm researching my Van Wert County family tree ... with its roots mostly in Jennings Twp., Tully Twp. and Van Wert City.
Primary surnames are: REED, MOSEL, WHERRY, MAY; secondary surnames include TRACY, BAXTER, REEVES, COIL, etc. I seem to have connected many family names, but still haven't found anyone else listing queries with the same ones I'm looking for.
Anyway, as for F.O. Current, he is the son-in-law of Daniel and Mary Tipton Reed, but I don't know which of their daughters he married. Pretty sure he lived in the Convoy/Tully Township area.
Similarly, I have a Ruth A. Reeves who is also a daughter of Daniel and Mary, but I have absolutely no information for her. Don't know her husband's first name.

As for the Reeds, I have a lot on Daniel's descendants, but though I know they all bought land in Jennings Township at the same time Daniel did (Nov. 1837), I've run into dead ends for his brothers William, Quinton, James and Peter. (There are a couple William Reeds I've found in the County biographies published in 1896, but neither appears to be Daniel's brother.)

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

I am seeking information about the family of Martha Gorrell Zinsmaster. Martha graduated from Van Wert High School. She died on February 8, 1954. She left her husband, Charles Zinsmaster, and four children: Gretchen, Karistine, Charles, and an infant son. Her parents were Eugene and Elsie Gorrell. Charles' parents lived in Van Wert at one time, although it appears that they moved at some point. I'd like to have news of the Zinsmaster family. Martha was a cousin to my father.

William Atkinson and family lived in York, Van Wert Co. in 1860, 1870 and 1880 Censuses. It appears that his mother Elizabeth lived with the family in 1860. I believe he may have been William Watson Atkinson, son of Jesse Atkinson who originally homesteaded that land in about 1837. Does anyone have information about this family? When did (Mary)Elizabeth Atkinson (mother) die? Did descendants remain in the area?

But if you might have any info on any cemetaries that the Cochenour's ar buried I would be interested.

Thanks

Charles W. Dewey family need info before 1850 and after 1880

I am looking for information about the C. W. Dewey family after 1880. I cannot find the children in later census. These Deweys may be key to my brickwall, Eli Easterwood.

1850 census, Dist. 69, Cleves, Hamilton County, Ohio
Charles W. Dewey, M, 29, Shoemaker, Ohio
Sarah J. Dewey, F, 17,, Ohio
Lavina (?), F, 9/12,, Ohio
Elizabeth Bunce, F, 17,, Ohio

I believe this Elizabeth Bunce married Isaac Trader of Ohio county, Indiana, in Boone Co. Ky, in 1854. Can anyone verify this? What was her relationship with this Dewey family? Does anyone have info on Charles or Sarah Dewey?

Charles (C W) Dewey, b. Ohio, and wife Sarah J., b. Ohio, 1860 census, Boone Co, KY. 1870 census Ohio Co, Indiana. Children: William, Daniel, Mary, Henry, Charles.

He signed my gggrandmother's (Mary Ann Trader Easterwood) Civil War pension affidavit. Looking for family connection; where he came from in Ohio.

C.W. (Charles) Dewey in 1880 census in Ridge, Van Wert County, Ohio. Children with this Charles and wife's name align with those found in the 1870 census in Indiana.

Also found my gggrandmother's (Mary Ann Trader Easterwood) brother, Isaac Trader, and sister, Rachel York, had also moved from the Rising Sun, Indiana area to Van Wert County, Ohio for the 1880 census also. Even stronger evidence, I think, that C.W. Dewey was a close friend of the family or a relative. I still have not heard from any C.W.'s descendents or researchers as to where he was born in Ohio.

Janet

I've seen Thorn, Perry, and Jackson,Allen as districts on census records.

Benjamin Bope makes the best starting point and I believe he was born about 1821, and have a death date of 8 Sep 1893 confirmed by obituary in the Lima Times Democrat on 19 Sept 1893. The only other useful info I see in the obit is that "Mrs. Bope is seriously ill." It doesn't say otherwise, I can only infer they meant his wife Martha Wilson Bope.

Grateful for any information you can send my way.

I am looking for information on Isaac Fording (1824-1896). He lived in Van Wert County until at least 1860. After that, he moved his family to Fort Wayne and then Toledo after taking a job with Wabash Railroad. He was a railroad grader, then a brakeman.

He may have performed quite a few marriages in Van Wert and had a wife pass away sometime between 1850-1860 (Catherine Fording). He also would have remarried sometime between 1850-1860 to Sophia who probably passed away in Fort Wayne Indiana sometime between 1860 and 1870.

He had the following children:
Sarah Fording, 1845
Peter Fording, 1848
Ellen Fording, 1852
John Fording, 1862
Emma J. Fording, 1863
Louise M. Fording, 1867 (also called Lula May)

They moved to Toledo Ohio sometime after 1870 where I have records of Isaac, Peter and Louise. Louise married William Cramer and also died young (1867-1902). Peter died in 1920. Peter and Isaac are buried together in Woodlawn Cemetery, Louise is buried with her husbands family close by.

Any information would be helpful.

Jessica Leonard
leonard.jessica@gmail.com

Janet

I am trying to confirm a date of death for Hester Ann Shafer / Shaffer who was listed in the 1910 Census as living in Van Wert. She was 90 years old at the time of the 1910 Census. Hester is buried in River Cliff Cemetery in Mt.Gilead, Oh with her husband Jacob Shafer. However, the tombstone states a 1907 death date. Due to other evidence (in addition to the 1910 census entry) I am certain that this date is wrong, and am looking for any info to support my belief that she died sometime after the 1910 census.

I am fortunate enough to have been able to trace the family through other generous contacts and the Faust/ Foust book back to Germany, but I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me fill in the blanks with family photos, occupations, stories about this family, etc. Thanks!

I am trying to find verification of the marriage of Bessie Annabelle Spohn to Eugene Black who were said to be married 30 Aug 1902, in Van Wert.

The date came to me through research done by my uncle a number of years ago. I have just lately come to question the date as given based on a small item found in the Delphos Daily Herald dated 26 May 1903.

In that newspaper it reads, "Miss Bessie Spohn of Van Wert is visiting in Delphos." Bessie had two sisters who lived in Delphos during that time frame.

Bessie also claimed to have been married in 1901 when she petitioned for a divorce in Allen Co. in Nov 1923.

If there is anyone who could check marriage records (if available) for Bessie and Eugene in the 1901-1903 time frame, I would be most grateful.

Viola Wallick from York, Van Wert, Ohio born 20 March 1874

I have found a discrepancy in parentage. Though the 1880 census record indicates her parents to be David Wallick and Mary Ann Smith, I have come across another piece of information that gives her parents as John Wallick and Anna Gibson. John and David look to be brothers. The 1880 census does place Viola in the home of David and Mary Ann, the age gap between Viola and the child born before her does cast doubt on her parentage. Anna Gibson died in 1877 in York, but John did live until 1906. Does anybody have any clear indication of Viola Wallick's true parents? She married David Earl Jones about 1896 and remained for her whole life in York, Van Wert, Ohio. She died on 23/24 June 1972.

Albert Alvin Weagley (1887 - 1920)

Maryville Enterprise (Blount Co. TN) December 15, 1920, Page 9:

“On Sunday morning, December 12, 1920, at 10:30, Albert Alvin Weagley went home to suffer no more, after a lingering illness of three and one-half years. On last Wednesday morning at 2:30, he changed for the worse, suffering intensely to the last. He bore his suffering with all patience, saying it was God's will and was alright, always cheerful, trying not to burden others with his trouble. He tried to guard everyone from getting his disease even to the last. He was a devoted husband and father, and a great lover of home.

From a child Albert dearly loved to read good books. His books were his companions, and during his sickness read so much until the last few months when he did not feel like reading. He kept a list of the books he read while sick which number 151, all good books, also some favorite quotations:

"He prayeth best who loveth best,
All things both great and small,
For the dear God who loveth us
He made and loveth all." ---Coleridge.

"Tis as easy now for the heart to be true,
As for the grass to be green or skies to be blue,
'Tis the natural way of living." ---Lowell.

He was so fond of the many beautiful flowers, the gift of dear friends, they seemed to cheer him so much.

He was born in Van Wert County, Ohio, September 20, 1887, being 33 years, 2 months and 22 days. On August 20, 1911 he was married to Flora Ridge, to which union one daughter was born. he was converted January 7, 1912 during a union revival at the Presbyterian Church, joining the M.E. Church the following April, of which he was a member until death.

He was in the service of the National Guard of Tennessee six years, 1911-1917, serving from June 19, 1916 to March 12, 1917 as a Lieutenant on the Mexican border. Just after he returned from the border his health began to decline and in July came the break down. He stayed six months at the M.W.A. Sanatorium, Woodmen, Colorado, and six months at the White Cross Sanatorium, Silver City, New Mexico, hoping to regain his health, but to no avail.

He leaves to mourn his loss a widow and one little daughter, Ruby Inez; father and mother; one sister, Mrs. E.J. Freeman of Lafayette, Indiana; four brothers, Harley of Van Wert County, Ohio; Perry of San Jose, California; James of Gas City, Indiana, and Lawrence of Maryville, Tennessee; an aunt, Mrs. F.R. Babcock of Maryville.
The funeral service was conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of R.R. Babcock by Rev. J.M. Emert, assisted by Rev. G.T. Francisco; interment was in Magnolia cemetery."

I need burial place & dates for John and Barbara DANIELS / DANNELS.
John was born abt 1820 and Barbara abt 1821.
I found John and Barbara in Ridge Twp on the 1880 census, but couldn't find them on the 1900.
Their son George DANIELS (b. 1858) was with them in 1880.
I was told that Barbara was buried in Van Wert County, but they didn't know where. Could someone check the Ridge Township Cemetery book and see if there are tombstones for John, Barbara and George DANIELS.

In the 1900 census for York Tp., Van Wert Co., Oh. There is a Jacob Bluffer born Mar 1845 aged 55. I cannot find him nor his wife in the 1910 census. His wife was Delilah, born Dec 1839 and aged 60, she was married previously to Abraham Bodle, 27 Dec 1859, 2nd to William Rickman 1 Jul 1882, and 3rd to Jacob Bluffer one year before the 1900 census. I know nothing about Jacob BLUFFER, but Rachel lived in Ohio and Adams County, Indiana. Does anyone have any information to share with me about the deaths of Jacob Bluffer and his wife Rachel?

Asdel Family in Van Wert County?

I just got a hit in ebay for Gateway to the West, Volume I, No. 2, April 1968 Issue, Published by Anita Short and Ruth Bowers. In the section "United States Land Patents Granted in Van Wert County" it lists as one of the surnames Asdel. This is my mother's paternal line and one of particular interest to me. I am hoping that someone might see this message and have access to a copy of this source in order to do a lookup for me and let me know what that entry says, especially a date and first name.

I thank you in advance for any and all help! Will happily compensate for your time! Thanks again!
Laura Moff Goist
John Rogers

Looking on information on the John Rogers family. They came from New York and there is some confusion on family ties in Ohio.
I have so far:
John Rogers b. abt. 1782 in new York
m.
Hannah Silsby

had a son
Augustus "Gus" Rogers b. abt. 1828 in New York
he m.
1st wife: Sarah Ann "unknown" b. abt. 1828 in Ohio
They had possiblly 4 children:
Ellen
John
Charles
and Angeline Rogers b. 1859 in Isabella Missouri.

My connection is Angeline, the other children are said to be born in Ohio. Sarah Ann dies between 1859 and 1862., I have been told in Van wert Ohio. But I can find no records there. I find no records of Angeline in Ohio either, she would have been an infant.
Augustus joins Civil war Union between 1862 and 1865 after war he marries again
wife 2:
Mary Perry b. in Indiana
and they have at least 7 more children.

My delima comes with info on John and Hannah (Silsby) Rogers and thier children which does not list Agustus.

The second delimma is Augustus and Sarah Ann's family, I can find Augustus and Sarah Ann in a 1850 Census in Ohio (Franklin or Licking County) but nothing for 1860 for them or any children. I can find no death records for Sarah Ann or birth records for Angeline Rogers. Between 1850 and 1862 Agustus and Sarah Ann go from Ohio to Missouri and back to van Wert Ohio.

After 1870 Augustus and his new wife Mary Perry go to Michigan (newyago county).

Any information will be greatly appreciated!

BAKER, KIA Korean War, Van Wert

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Van Wert County Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: Paul Edward Baker
Born: March 19, 1929, Caucasian
Date of loss: Missing in Action September 1, 1951 in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Van Wert County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
Civil War Book

Although I am in Colorado, I came across a 1916 original book titled"The Fifteenth Ohio Volunteers and Its Campaigns 1861-1865". It appears to be signed by Frank Askew, the Colonel and Brevet Brigadier General. It is based on the diaries of Lieutenant Andrew J Gregory, Frnak L. Schreiber and William McConnell, partial diary of Chaplain Randall Ross, and many letters of men in the regiment.
I am just learning about Ohio's role in the Civil War although I grew up there. How does the Fifteenth Ohio Volunteers fit into the general army/military for the Civil War? Any direction would be appreciated. Also, does this book have any value to it beyond basic history?

Ridge Twp Cemetery

Last October I made a genealogy trip to Van Wert Cty from Florida. I happened upon Ridge Twp Cemetery on my way from Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert out to Kings Cemetery, but didn't realize I had folks buried there.

I just found that I have several ancestors there, and I'm wondering if anyone travels that way along US 30 or SR 30 (if I remember my directions correctly). If so, I have section and row numbers that should make the look up easy. If I recall the cemetery, it wasn't very large, and set up in blocks to make locating graves fairly easy.

Of course, I'd be willing to reimburse for film, postage, etc if anyone has time to do this...I just don't know when I'll be able to get back up that way again.

Thanks so much,
Joanie
