I'm looking for a William (Bill) Conkle (Konkle – Kunkle). That’s all I have on him. My wife's brother, Donald E Might, was born in Harpster, Wyandot County, Ohio in 1927. He is the only one of seven children NOT born down in Athens or Meigs Counties in Ohio. The family lived down in southern part of Ohio. We know his father and mother, John Might & Anna NELSON Might, had a cousin Bill Conkle there and must have visited then, as they always lived in the southern part of the state. It is believed that Bill Conkle may have moved to the Fairborn, Greene County, Ohio area sometime later. I'd love to connect Bill Conkle and the Might family but I have no idea how they are connected. Any information you could give will be most appreciated. I would be happy to share anything I have on the MIGHT line.

Regards,
Gary R Harwood
Sharon J Harwood
grharw@gmail.com
Somewhere between 1870 and 1880 Thomas and Mary's kids, incl Joseph Marion, headed west from Van Wert. I believe Thomas and Mary must've died btwn 1860-1870. I have a bit more if you want to send me your email. Mine is Morgan@yonderplaces.com

Hi... I am still looking for information about my grandfather, Joseph Marion Beavo... He died in Los Angeles, California in 1917 when my father was an infant. We believe he was from Van Wert and possibly related to John Beavo. He was married previous to my grandmother and had a daughter by that marriage by the name of Virginia whom may have been raised by a family member. He worked on the Panama Canal for awhile and ended up in California working on the Huntington Estate in Los Angeles. If you know anything about him or his family in Ohio I would appreciate your reply.

Looking for exact death dates for Elizabeth and Jacob Stripe and where they are buried at. Here's the basic information I know.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Stripe was a daughter of William Harvey and Sarah Sally Watson. On around February 1825 in Ohio, she was born. On October 23, 1845 in Van Wert County, Ohio, she married Jacob Stripe (b. about 1810/1 Ohio probably Fairfield County). His parents were from Pennsylvania. Jacob was a farmer. First, they resided in Pleasant township, Van Wert County, Ohio. Second, they resided in Jackson township, Van Wert County. Third, they resided in Hoaglin township, Van Wert County, Ohio. Jacob died between 1880 and 1900. Elizabeth died between 1900 and 1910. Their children were:

John - He was born on August 1845. He had a 2nd marriage in 1883 to Mattie. He resided in Clay, Kosciusko, Indiana on 1900. He may have died on 1942.
Jacob - He was born on January 1855. He was married 1st to Mary and 2nd to Emily or Emma Demint on May 19, 1890 Van Wert, OH. His children were George W. (b. February 1879), Earl (b. April 1891), Grover S. (b. October 1894), and Roy (b. July 1899). There was a Jacob L. Stripe who died in Van Wert County, Ohio on April 17, 1935. There was an Emma Stripe who died on November 9, 1933 in Van Wert, Ohio.

George W. - He was born on October 1860. He married Herma A. and their child was Elizabeth M. (b. November 1888). There was a George Stripe that died on February 27, 1925 in Fairfield County, Ohio. There was also a George that died on 1945.

They adopted Katherine Reese after Betsy’s sister Martha and her husband Henry Reese died. Latty Twp is directly north of Van Wert County's Hoaglin Twp.

http://www.pauldingcountyengineer.com/m/1878/latty_township_...

Hagerman's Creek seems to line up on a modern Van Wert Co map with what is called North Creek in Hoaglin Twp near the Union Twp line.

http://vanwertcountyengineer.com/countymap.html

david

Does anyone know the origin of Hagerman Creek's name? My ancestors, Isaac Hagerman (as well as his sons William, Jacob, and Isaac) settled in Union and Hoaglin Townships in Van Wert County in 1840 and I suspect that it was named after them.

I see that the majority of the creek is in Paulding County, but can't tell which Van Wert Co. township it enters. Is it Union or Hoaglin Township? I can't find a good map online. Thanks for any insight. -Joan Hostetler, Indianapolis

William Harvey died August 11, 1872. He resided in Pleasant Township, Van Wert and Hoaglin Township, Van Wert. He is buried at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, but there is no death record for him in Van Wert County. He must have died elsewhere. He was 77 years old when he died.

Sarah Sally (Watson) Harvey died September 15, 1889. There also is no death record in Van Wert County for this date that is on her grave stone at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. There is one for a Sarah Harvey on September 17, 1880, but I don't think that's her. She was 82 years old when she died.

Thank You so much for the info. Was Sarah Jane's maiden name Evans too? I know she married John Evans. They had a daughter Mary Evans b:1874. I'm stumped on John Evan's parents . I thought it was Evan Evans b: 1824 & Sarah b:1825. Do you have any information on them? There are so many Sarah's Evan's & John's that it really gets confusing. Thank you so much for the information. You can use my email if you want...gmtjy7@msn.com Thank You, Tina Youngpeter

Don't pay any attention of Dewey being one of Emma's Sisters child, it would be one of Emma's father or mother's siblings. Her father's name was John Evans b:1891. His siblings were David b:1850, Margaret b:1864 & Mary b:1866. I don't have much information on Jane b:1852 her mother. John's parents were Evan Evans b:1824 & Sarah b:1823.

don't know if this information will be any help. My Grandma's (Edith Williams-Ayers) aunt was Emma Evans. Dewey Diss lived with Emma Evans in 1930 Census, they were cousins. My Mom remembers Dewey living with Emma but she never knew that he was married. Sarah Evans-Williams b:1877-d:10/19/1920 was my GG Grandmother & Emma Evans b:1879 were sisters. There other simblings were...Mary Evans b:1874, Evan Evans b:1876 & Oscar Evans b: 1884. I have no idea who Dewey's parents were. If he was Emma's cousin then it would have to be Mary Evans. Emma was never married. I have information on Mary's Father & Grandfather if you would want it.

If your positive he is buried there, you could try contacting the people who maintain and own the cemetery for a plot layout. I have been able to get one of those in Michigan from a cemetery right on line through googling for free. It's also possible the marker got damaged with age and weather and no one ever replaced it with a new one. I just went to a cemetery locally last month and my Uncle's grave marker was missing and it was there just last winter. Good luck in your quest. Thanks for downloading those picture from Van Wert.

Thanks Amie,

I think I emailed you once a while back. Here's what I got on Zepheniah Harvey in trying to see if there's a connection to William Harvey b. 1795 Maryland and both are burried at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. I also found this message at the bottom somewhere else on the message boards. Have you had a chance to check into that information, since Zepheniah and Sarah named their one son with Wheeler as a middle name?

Zepheniah was born on 1809 in Maryland. On January 10, 1819 in Ohio, he married Sarah Stoner (b. January 10, 1819 Ohio; d. May 20, 1889 Van Wert County, Ohio; buried May 22, 1889 Mount Pleasant Cemetery). He died in Richland County, Ohio on 1853. He is buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Van Wert County, Ohio. He had two sons. John Wheeler Harvey born on June 10, 1834 in Richland County, Ohio. On October 7, 1863, he married Amanda Jane Grove (b. October 5, 1841; d. January 13, 1905) she was a sister to Mary Ann Grove, who married Hezekiah Harvey. He died on August 2, 1910 in Van Wert County, Ohio. He was buried August 4, 1910 in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Royal Clyde Harvey was John and Amanda’s son. Wyman Chester was the son of Royal. Amie Knueve is Wyman’s granddaughter. Samuel B. Harvey was born in Richland County, Ohio on 1838 and was another child of Zepheniah. He died in Van Wert county, Ohio.

(Administration Records, Richland County, Ohio - Vol. 4 A.D. 1841)
Zepheniah Harvey; Page 275; Date: E 1841.

“William Harvey, Revolutionary War Patriot, born in 1744 in Piscataway, Prince George’s County, Maryland (now Frederick), MD father, William, mother, Statia, who settled in Cecil County, Maryland from England. William Jr. married Margaret Bell; our direct descendents are Reason, Nathaniel. This branch settled in western Maryland and nearby West Virginia. Married Wilson. Much has been documented on this line at DAR (Daughters American Revolution), published family history. The problem is that William Harvey married a Peggy Wheeler and had a different family . . . Jonathan Lewis Harvey, b. 1786 Clarksburg, Montgomery County, Maryland (same area, same time). Is it the same William or a different family? Please respond. I have much to share.
Death Record Lookup

I am hoping that someone can help me find out what happened to my gg-grandmother. I am looking for the death record of Harriet Stevens Hudson who was born in Adams County, Indiana April 8, 1853 to James and Sarah Melodar Stevens. She was the widow of Thomas Hudson who died in Van Wert County, Ohio in 1900. I don't know when Harriet died or exactly where, but I am assuming Adams County, Indiana or Van Wert County, Ohio. I know the information I am giving out is vague, especially when I don't even know when she died, but I am hoping someone has a searchable death index for these counties.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

-Trina

Some of the info is fairly easily available. Charles, Rachel and family are in the Van Wert county census listings 1850 thru 1880.
http://www.ancestry.com/search
Only problem is 1860 has been transcribed as GILTILAND.

Extracted data from Van Wert Co. Probate Court dates the marriage to 1849. And a contributed listed puts the wedding in Liberty Twp. She is listed as Rachael MEES.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

1850 Census data also indicates potential families for Philip MEES <1803> and Henry MEES <1808>, both in Liberty Twp.

1840 Census shows both Philip and Henry MEESE in Columbiana Co. You would have to check the 1840 demographics to see if you can isolate one of these families with an older daughter. Look for Ancestry Census transcriptions at your library.

Good hunting,
Wanda

I am looking for information on Charles Gilliland, (1826-1908)prior to 1880 and his wife Rachel Meece (c.1830-1880?). Charles and his children moved to Lake Odessa, Michigan after 1880. I am looking for confirmation of his marriage date of 08 Jul 1849 in Liberty Twp, Van Wert Co., I would like her vital data; birth date, death date, and burial location for Rachel. She is not buried with the family in Lake Odessa, Michigan, there is no record on the census after 1880 or Michigan death record. Also her mother and father'
s names.

Frank Hunt born abt 1890 Van Wert, Ohio

Frank is the father of Audrey Hunt, but I believe was never married to Audrey's mother Blance Harp. Frank was in Van Wert County 1905 to 1906, I have photo of him with Audrey abt 1906. I also have a photo of him in the military, prob. WWI. All of Audrey's census records show a different birth place for Frank. I think he was very young when he fathered Audrey maybe abt 15. Does any body have a Frank that would have been in Van Wert County during this time period?

I will do both! I won't give any guarantees as to when I'll have this done, since it will have to be a low-priority task, but I will definitely send this along as soon as I can, both a searchable transcription and a PDF scan of the original.

Have Calendar/Journal with many Van Wert names, 1935

I recently acquired a 1935 weekly memo calendar that was used as a journal by someone who presumably lived in or near Van Wert, OH, since it was an advertising calendar from Carper & Hall Lumber Company in Van Wert.

While it is mostly a delightful snapshot of life (example: "July 31, Very hot. O & I went over to B's boys made hay. I got brown dress fitted. Chris Lewis buried today. Harry and Lula Hablitzel here in eve.") it also has many names scattered throughout that I'm guessing may be of interest to folks researching family in this area.

I'm willing to transcribe the journal into a document so that it could be posted somewhere and therefor searchable, but I have no idea where to post something like this.

So if anyone has a suggestions as to where I could post it that would allow folks to find it who are searching on the internet for people named in that calendar, or where folks specifically researching families from Van Wert might find it, I will go ahead and transcribe it and make it available. I will probably both transcribe and scan it, so that people can see the original just in case I made a transcription error.

FYI, the surnames listed below are just some of those mentioned in this journal.

OHGenWeb is an association of dedicated volunteers whose goal is to provide online genealogical information at no cost to the visitor.

The recent retirement of one of our county coordinators has created an opening for someone to take care of the Van Wert County OHGenWeb site.

The requirements are few:
1. Knowledge of HTML
2. Abide by project rules at http://www.ohgenweb.org/guidelines.php
3. Have a passion for genealogy.

Kindly reply to: sc [at] ohgenweb [dot] org

Dale Grimm
OHGenWeb State Coordinator
