The small village of Peoria, Iowa was laid out in 1853 by Theodrick Spain (married Mary Haines). It appears that this Theodrick was in both Union and Champaign Counties in Ohio prior to his immigration to Iowa. There is no documentation of why the Iowa Peoria got its name.

I know that there is a town of Peoria in Union County, but that it was platted later than 1853.

My question: was the name of "Peoria" any type of place name in Union County (for example, a rural neighborhood, creek, or church) that could have been the reason why Theodrick Spain chose the name of Peoria for his new Iowa town?

Thanks--Calvin
Basically, the only solid information I have on them is this from DAR records:
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 116 page 263

Mrs. Flora Price Jones. DAR ID Number: 115841 Born in Darby Plains, Ohio. Wife of Albert Newton Jones.
Descendant of John Judy, as follows:

1. John Price (1833-99) m. 1859 Sarah Wilson (b. 1844).
2. William D. Wilson (1807-73) m. 1829 Nancy Moore (1808-82).
3. Valentine Wilson (1785-1855) m. 1806 Eleanor Judy (d. 1818).
4. John Judy m. 1782 Phœbe Lamaster.
John Judy (1760-1840) served in the artillery in Virginia. He was born in Switzerland; married in Kentucky; removed to Ohio, 1794, where he died in Union County.

I believe Albert was born in Morrow County in 1860, but have not been able to prove that conclusively.

I am looking for any information on Andrew GANDY and Elizabeth JOHNSON GANDY. I know that Andrew was born in Union County, OH abt 1826. Elizabeth Ann JOHNSON was born in Union County abt 1827. They are my great, great grandparents. Their daughter, Eliza J. GANDY was born in Union County abt 1851. They only other thing I've seen online is that Andrew died in Bosque Co., Texas. I can find no information on why and when he went to Texas. There is an Elisabeth GANDY, wife of A. GANDY, buried in Maskill Cemetery, Union Co., OH. I did not see an A or Andrew buried in same cemetery. Does anyone has any information on this family, especially the connection to Texas?

Help?

Can anyone help me fill in a gap in the life of one of my wife's relatives?

Stella Mae Cobb was born August 16, 1898 in Ohio. On March 10, 1919, she married Harold M. Temple in Union County. On November 15, 1926 she married Charles E. Reineck in Union County. At some later point she married George Shilling.

The marriage application for Stella and Harold indicates he was a farmer in Richwood, so I assume they lived in Union County and Harold died before she married Mr. Reineck. Can anyone tell me when Harold died and the names of Stella and Harold's children?

The marriage application for Stella and Charles Reineck indicates that Charles lived in Fremont, Ohio. All I know about George Shilling is that he lived in Fremont, Ohio when he died.

Thanks for assistance

Smith married Amy Andrews on 12 Jun 1842 in Union county. They had 2 sons (that I know of), Alden (b May 1843) and Joseph (b about 1846). Either they were divorced or Spencer died - Amy is living with her parents in the 1850 census (without Alden and Joseph). She then remarried and had more children. I don't know anything more about Spencer. Is there anything you can find on him?
Thanks for YOUR help.

In the 1850, 60, 70, and 80 census records, there is a listing for Lockey Garrett. It looks like he was born in Virginia in about 1810. Some of these are listed as founding members of the Free Will Baptist Church in Taylor Twp.
I'm trying to find out if he was the brother of Priscilla Garrett who married Jacob Orahood in 1830.

Would anyone out there who lives nearby be willing to take a digital photo or two of the monument and email it to me? Samuel is on a monument with wife Margaret, and Samuel, Jr (1768-1821) with wife Elizabeth Robinson Mitchell.( It is not clear if he is on his own monument, or with his father.) I would greatly appreciate it if someone is willing to do this. Thanks. bbdavis3@comcast.net

Does anyone have a copy of Mitchell Cemetery monumental inscriptions that does not list burials in alphabetical order? I have a Samuel POLAND who is buried Mitchell Cemtery. He died of disease in Hunstville, Alabama May 28, 1864. His family had been living in both Illinois and Iowa for some time and, as far as I know, there was never any family connection in Union County. The family was originally from Union Twp, Champaign County, Ohio. I would like to see who he is burried next to in hopes of finding a family connection.

I'm having some difficulty posting on this board, so forgive me if I'm not successful here.

I am looking for descendants of two Hoffheintz brothers, Georg and Jost. These two came over after the first three - Adam, Jacob & Daniel.

They settle for a time in Fayette Cty., Pennsylvania, and may have moved on to Ohio.

My husband (and children's ) g,g,g, great grandmother was Catherine Huffines (1811-1883?), who married William Steele in Fayette & had a number of children. On the 1800 census for Fayette, Georg & Jost are listed (and they belonged to the Good Hope Lutheran Church). I believe CAtherine may descend from Georg's son, Jacob, but have no proof yet. He would have been 16-26 years old in 1800, so is the right age to be her father.

Is there anyone out there who knows something about Catherine & her ancestors? I could really use the help.

Please email me at ellenlevy66@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

am desparately looking for any record of my gr gr gr grandfather, Thomas Wilkins b. 1815-1818?, in OH, Union, RossCo., I think, and his wife , my grandmother, Mary Tull , m. Aug 1840, in OH. They moved to Hadley, Pke co. IL in the early 1850's, and in 1860's moved to Perry , Pike co IL. He was living with his dau. Rachel Wilkins Mercer in the 1880 Census. I assume Mary passed by then, but I have no record. He is listed in the 1900 census. I think he died soon after the census was taken, possibly Nov or Dec. 1900. I Only found a blurb in the personals in the Pike newspaper in Nov or Dec 1900 that his son , professor John ? Wilkins came from Vermont IL to his funeral . I have checked all the cem books, I've walked the McCord and Wilson Cem several times, I've walked the Wade and Seybold Cem also just in case the burial place was overlooked. His chldren and grandchildren are buried mostly in Perry. His son Milton and grandson Russel ran a grocery store in Perry, I would think that a write up would've been in the paper. i THINK Thomas parent's were John and Nancy Wilkins b. Delaware, moved OH in 19th cen. and this John died 1869 in OH. Maybe Thomas and wife wanted to be buried in OH where they were born and with their parents? Please Help
