I am looking for a Susannah Anderson. I'm not sure if she is in Hartwood Cemetery. I recently found out that's where her husband Jacob Anderson (1801-1882) is buried. She would have died between 1870 and 1880 as she is on the 1870 US Census and not the 1880.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Chad Anderson

This couple was in Tusc Co as of the 1850 census; probably as of the 1840 census (though I haven't proven that yet). Tusc Co History book states that they were both from Pennsylvania. Are there any sources that may show me where in PA they were from? They were in Lucas Co as of 1860; both died there in the mid 1880's. I'm wondering if there was a contingent of families that may have arrived in Tusc Co together? There was another family (Clantz) that they closely intermarried with that was also in Tusc and also moved to Lucas Co, but they were from MD. I'm just at a loss of where to look; the names are common, and PA is a big place.

Any and all hints appreciated...

Tracey

Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Her obit says" Survivors include one daughter, Edna Mae (Smitty) Smith of Beach City."

Does anyone know the other two children that were born to Wilson and Dorothy. I assume the other daughter and the son died between Wilson and Dorothy's death.

I am trying to find Edna Mae but not having any luck...

Thanks in advance for any help...

Juls

Hello,

My great-great-grandfather was Jacob S. Harris who married Margaret Balder in Tuscarawas Co., 13 Aug 1865. A 1900 Clay Co. IN census which contained my great-grandfather, Phillip Harris, Jacob and Margaret's son, stated that Phillip's father,Jacob, was born in Ohio and his mother, Margaret, was born in Germany. This might have been Jacob's 2nd marriage. I estimate Jacob was born abt. 1838 and Margaret around 1840. Was East Germany Prussia then? I want to find any information about the Harrises and Balders from Tuscarawas Co., Ohio.
Thank you...any information is greatly appreciated!
Carla
Scullin, Smetts before 1850

I am looking for any information on Henry SCULLIN who was born about 1817 in Ireland. In Tuscarawas he was a ship's chandler and he died of cholera in July 1850 in Tuscarawas, Ohio, probably in New Philadelphia.
His wife's name was Mary Ann SMETTS, born 1825 in Starke, Ohio, died in 1889 in Auglaize, Ohio under the name CORDREY. Her second husband was Riley CORDREY. I would like to have any info about Mary Ann, I know nothing of her parents. She had a brother named Philip SMETTS, born 1818 in Tuscarawas, Ohio, died 1902 in Tuscarawas, Ohio.
Henry & Mary Ann had 3 children; Elizabeth Ellen SCULLIN b1845, Henry Jeremiah SCULLIN b1849, Margaret A SCULLIN b1850 possibly.
Riley Cordrey & his first wife had 4 children. Riley & Mary Ann had 8 more; Sarah Cynthia, John R., Alice, Arminta, Nathan Ellsworth, Alvaretta, Mary Olive, Irene Arvinda/Adell.
When Riley and Mary Ann married in late 1850, they lived in Newcomerstown, Tuscarawas, Ohio. They moved to Goshen Twp, Auglaize, Ohio sometime after 1863. They are buried there.

I'm looking for a relative I believed died after 1930 but not sure of the year. What are the laws regarding releasing death certificates for genealogy perposes, in other words how long does a person have to be dead before you can look at the death record? Thank you for your time.
Arlene

I am looking for information of Thomas White and Elizabeth Law who in 1860 were living in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas Co. Ohio.

They still have living with them 3 daughters:
Ruth 18
Amanada 15
Martha 14

I would like to know when Thomas and Elizabeth died. If Thomas left a will. And who their 3 daughters married.

Thomas and Elizabeth had an older son named Thomas whom I believe to be my 4th Great-Grandfather. Though cenus records for my Thomas seems to put his birth in 1838 as were the Thomas of Thomas and Elizabeth is listed as 1835 on the 1850 Census for Carroll Co.

Esther Fretz Overholt is supposed to be buried there, but I have no idea where the cemetery is. I've got an idea based upon the description from http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Tuscarawas/TuscarawasHDover.h.... I descend from Jacob Crites and Abraham Overholt, Esther's son.

"Among other early pioneers who arrived prior to 1812 and located in the western part of Dover Township, may be mentioned Mathias Burchfield, Christian Noftzinger, Abraham Overholt, John Burkholder, Jacob Crites, Henry Kretzer, Isaac Thomas and John Wible. Christian Noftzinger entered, and occupied until his death, the southeast quarter of Section 18, Township 9. Abraham Overholt owned the northwest quarter of Section 12, Township 8, and Mathias Burchfield the east half of Section 11., Township 9. These three families were related, came from Pennsylvania. and one winter lost eleven members from typhoid fever. John Burkholder entered and settled on the southeast quarter of Section 22, Township 9. Jacob Crites, a German, and his two sons, Andrew and Jacob, owned the south half of Section 10, Township 8."

Emerson and Bessie (Arbogast) Patterson

Hello everyone. I am looking for information on the Patterson family. Bessie Arbogast married Emerson J. Patterson.
In the 1910 census, Emerson and Bessie are living in Mills, Tuscarawas County, Ohio with no children. Emerson is 25 and Bessie is 23 years old.
In the 1920 census, they are still living in Mills, Tusc Co. with 4 children: Raymond, age 8; Mary, age 6; Grace, age 4; and Ruth, age 2.
In the 1930 census, they are still in Mills. Emerson is 46, Bessie is 43, and George R., is 19. None of the girls are listed in the household. There is a slight chance that Mary is married as she would be 16 or 17 but at age 14 and 12, Grace and Ruth would not be married.
I looked at the Ohio death index and also on familysearch labs for a death certificate and can not find anything.
I received an obituary for George Raymond Patterson and no siblings nor were his parents mentioned.
I talked to a nephew of his and he knows nothing on any siblings of George R. He is a nephew from George’s wife side.
Bessie died in 1946 and Emerson died in 1953. She died from suffocation from drowning and he died in an accident. These both happened in Franklin County where they moved to at some point.
If anyone has any information on the daughters of Emerson and Bessie I would appreciate it.
Thanks for your time and help. It is greatly appreciated.

Juls
I have seen Gus and Gust the rest of the time...

I can not find a death date on him at all. I am wondering if he died between 1954 and 1957. I say this because I have looked at the death certs and the death index and he is not in either one so the only gap where there isn't an index is 1954...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh and Gust was born 25 Jul 1893 in New Philadelphia...

Juls

Hello. I am looking to confirm the birth and death dates of Sarah (Kohler) Arbogast. She married John Edward Arbogast around 1890. They had 9 children.

The dates I have for her is 9 Mar 1870 (birth) and 23 Oct 1908 for her death. I can't find her on the death index or a death cert for her but I believe they didn't start until December of 1908??

Any help would be greatly appreciated... I believe she is buried at Stone Creek as her husband is buried there, according to his death certificate.

I am trying to find the parents of my ggrandmother, Margaret Henderson b. November 28, 1871 at Mineral City, according to her death certificate of 1954. Her obit said she had a living brother named James G. Henderson. She married David Stull of Carroll county Ohio. My grandmother was informant and didn't have a good memory. It just shows Henderson for father and maybe Gordon for mother. Our library here in Wooster only has Tusc. births to May 1871. This is my brick wall and I would appreciate any help.
Barbara Flint

Hello everyone... I am looking for ANYONE working on these lines or anyone that knows any information on these lines...

John George Arbogast and wife, MAgdaline Geihecker, came to Tuscarawas County from France. They along with their 6 sons and 1 daughter arrived in NY on 4 Jun 1840.

Their children and info about them are:

1. Philip Arbogast... born 1817 in France... mrd Magdaline Oswalt... Philip died in 1889 (somewhere between Jan and Apr 1889). They had 6 children. One of their daughters was Caroline who married William Kinsey.

2. Magdaline Arbogast... born 1819 in France... mrd Philip Dreher... had 10 children... Only have information on a few of the kids...

3. Henry Arbogast... born 1824 in France... mrd Dasada/Dothea Getzman... They had 7 children... I have info on all 7 children but my info on Henry and Dorthea is VERY lacking...

4. John Arbogast... born 1828 in France... mrd Julia Elizabeth Baumgartner on 15 Jun 1853... moved to Illinois and then to the Dakota Territory... had 16 children (this is my direct line so have a lot of info)

5. Frederick Arbogast... born around 1831 in France... 1st married Mary Dougherty who died around 1852/53... had one child with Mary. 2nd wife was Caroline Yakley or Yagley (have seen it both ways)... Had 6 children...

6. Louis Arbogast... born around 1833 in France... mrd Roseanna Baumgartner... moved to Bureau County, Illinois and then on to the Dakota Territory...

7. Jacob Arbogast... born around 1838 in France... I have no info on him except that when his father died in 1867 he was still alive as he is mentioned in the will/probate...

The Arbogasts also had 6 more children. Three sons died in the war in France under Napoleon's rule... They also had 3 daughters... One was buried at sea on the trip to America and two were buried at Long Island when they arrived. Supposedly due to the war and the loss of the 3 sons caused John George and family to come to America...

ANY information would be greatly appreciated... I am hoping to make contact with some of the family that is still alive and living in the area... If more info is needed on a particular family, please let me know... I am more than willing to share!

Thanks in advance!

Juls

The marriage of Solomon Henry Stocker and Elizabeth Stauffer occured 18 Oct 1831 Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Is there any referenceable proof that her father was named Andrew? Her mother Maria? I cannot find anything close to Andrew Stauffer in the 1820, 1830, or 1840 Ohio census. The 1820 and 1830 Tuscarawas Co., Ohio census has only Jacob Stoufer/Stouffer. 1850 census Elizabeth wife of Solomon is age 27 born PA. 1860 census Eliz wife of Solomon is age 48 born Ohio. 1870 census Elizabeth wife of Solomon is age 56 born PA.
The Stocker Family by Jennie E. Stewart and Charles L. Stocker have in the Third Generation page 4 that Andrew Stocker, after the death of Mary Magdeline Haas, his first wife, married 10 Jun 1828 Maria Brehmer, daughter of Conrad Sr., and Barbara (Keener) Brehmer.

Deceased was about 75 years of age adn was
one of the oldest settlers of this county, having
come from Pennsylvania at an early age and settled
near the place where he died."

Hello,
I am researching a Balder family that came from Bavaria, Germany in the areas of Rockenhausen &/or Bisterschied.
I have an Andrew Balder aged 57 in the 1860 Tuscarawas county census born in Germany about 1803. This is my ggg-grandfather. He was married to Mary E. Erhardt (var. spellings). Mary is not listed in the 1860 census so I believe she had passed on by this time. Living with this elder Andrew Balder is Catherine aged 16 born in Ohio & Andrew aged 21 born in Germany. Living next door is Philip Balder w/ wife Catharine (Dougherty) & a child Mary E. Schafer aged 10. Philip & the younger Andrew are brothers. Other known siblings is Margaret Balder (my gg-grandmother}, & John Balder who married Lucinda Bentz.
1900 census has the year they came to this country:
John Balder came to the U.S in 1852
Phillip & Margaret came in 1853
Andrew came in 1855
So they wouldn't be in the 1850 census maybe the elder Andrew would. They are also found living in Coshocton & Holmes counties at various times. Would love to have any information on this Balder family.
Thank you. Carla Frazier

I am also looking for Rachel's parents. She was born about 1835 and married J. B. McG. in Tuscarawas Co. Feb. 5 1854.
I have recently found information on John Waud from Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, who was married to a Frances Scur and had a son, John Waud mentioned in a 5th Judicial Circuit action held in New Philadelphia Sept. 19, 1842. I find John Waud Sr.68 with wife Frances 68 in the 1850 census in Andrew, MO., both born in England. Can anyone shed further light on these facts and can they connect James T. Waud from England to these Wauds.

In tracing the family of James T. Waud from England, I ran across another family from Capt. John Waud family, mostly in Oregon. Capt. John was said to have a connection to Tuscarawas by virtue of an Oregon Donation Land Claim Application Biography that stated that " nat by nat father, John Wand (sic) while John Jr. was a minor of about 12 years in Tuscarawas Co. Ohio, 5th Judicial Circuit Court House, New Philadelphia 19 Sept 1842. Aff William Caples, Robert Willis, Sheldon Murry"
I am looking for any connection of these Wauds to James T.

Need help finding out if the ca. 1880 to 1942 McCollam Bros. funeral home founder William McCollum/McCollems/McCollam was the son of Daniel McCollum and Jane Thatcher. Daniel and William were in the 1850 census in Ohio, Tuscarawas, Salem Twp. In 1860, the family was in Iowa without William. I cannot find him in 1860, but in 1870, he is a cabinet maker in Urichsville. in 1880, he is listed as an Undertaker. Daniel's son Edward followed him in the businss, and Edward's son James Charles was a Funeral Director on his 1942 Draft registration. Name was originally McCollum, but is McCollems on 1880 census. On the 1900 and later cenus' it has been McCollam.
Willam was the older brother of my grgr gradfather Harvey. William was born ca. 1829 in Milton Twp. Trumbull, now Mahoning Co. Ohio. I have yet to find his date of death. He was married 1st to Margaret Warfel in 1854, then to her sister Marie Caroline Wafel 1863.
Any help in solving his puzzle would be greatly appreciated.
Ralph McCollum

My mother and I were both born in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. We have a rich family history dating back to over 150 years in Tuscarawas County Ohio. My husbands Huff family came to Ohio in 1803 and settled in the bottoms of Zoar, which is a Quaker Settlement in Tuscarawas County. Our family trees have taken us to the Lancaster Co. PA and Frederick Co., Maryland areas. There are many locations in between and many overseas that we have information leading us on our family tree journey. Since we both enjoy geneology it makes finding and sharing information alot easier. I'm always on the look-out for her and she is always on the look-out for me. We would love to share and find new family branches.
Black Horse Tavern Tale

Researching Jane Reed in Tuscarawas Co in the mid 1800s introduced me to the story of how the Black Horse Tavern got it's name. It is a sensational story of murder, deception and revenge circa 1820 in frontier Ohio. I am most interested in finding out if it is true. Does any one know if there is any contemporaneous newspaper account of the affair that took place in the tavern owned by James Boyd on the Stuebenville Road thru Tuscarawas Co in 1819 or 1820? I have even read of a stone that was found in the Tuscarawas River circa 1918 that is purported to have the initials of the murder victim carved into it with the words "I am killed"! Is there such an account in any paper? I have located stories in the 1920s and 1950s that relate to the tale and it seems to have spread thruout Ohio. There was even a play written by a Kent State professor and reset in the Rev War era based on the tale. Any info that could be shared regarding this story would be greatly appreciated.

Alfred Ault, Jefferson and Tuscarawas Co., OHIO

Ok, heres the problem. My maternal Great, Great Grandfather is pretty much invisible to everyone but myself. I know that he exsisted, I have 1 photo of him with his 4 sons, I have a World War 1 Pension paper, and a death certificate for him, saying that in 1925, in Tusc. Co., he "commited suicide by laying head down upon RR, when train passed over 1/2 lenth, head was severed off at neck" I cant find any obituary for this at all, I also have 3 census forms with him, 1 being 18 years old, the second when he is about 28 and the third when he is about 38. His death certificate reads that his fathers name was Harry or Henry (illegible) and his mothers name was Jennie Page. I am about 95% sure that his mothers name was page, but I have suspected it was Matilda and not Jennie, seeing that this family did not have a Jennie as a child. If anyone can help, or anyone has any information on any Ault matters this side of Ohio then please contact me by email at aultgenealogy@gmail.com

William SMITH b. 1842, looking for more information

My ancestor, William (middle name possibly Frederick) SMITH was born in Tuscarawas County in September 1842. The only sources I have on his birth are other family trees. One source (OneWorldTree) states his birth as 2 September 1842 in Wayne township, no parents listed. The other source on FamilySearch gives the date as 3 September in New Philadelphia, York township. That source states his parents' names are William Smith and Mary Jane JEFFERIES.

I'm looking for a primary source to confirm the parents' names, like a birth record. Alternately if anyone has access to the 1850 Census and finds them, that would be great. I have been unable to find the family in the 1860 census.

Chester Russell (1815-1875) and Nancy P ?, married in Tuscarawas abt 1835

Looking for information about Chester Russell, son of Alanson Russell (1793-1838) and Nancy Caulkins (1794-1865), and a brother of Emmeline Russell (1814-1877), George Russell (1817-1888), and Clarinda Russell (b 1820), all born in Jefferson Co, New York.

Specifically, I am searching for information on Chester's first wife, a Nancy P ? , who was born in Connecticut in 1818. I believe Chester and Nancy married abt 1835 in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio, then moved abt 1850 to Bureau Co, Illinois, where Nancy divorced(?) him. Their daughter Mary Jane Russell (1837-1910) married William Butt Ross (1832-1919).

Chester seems to have married again before 1860 -- to a seamstress/dressmaker from England named Martha or Emma -- and had two more daughters before he died in Princeton, Illinois, before 1880. Daughters are Alice or Clarinda Russell (b 1859) and Lydia Russell (b 1865).

Any additional information will be most welcome.

I'm searching for my family and information. My great-grandfather, George W. Robinson was born in Tuscarusras County, Ohio on Dec. 27, 1822. His father was Thomas Robson/Robinson (born in PA) and his mother (born in NJ) is not named. Was told there is Indian blood in the family(mother was full blooded Indian). George was married to Nancy Harris, she died in April 1873. They had four girls; Edta, Sadie, Sallie, and Mary.

George served in the Union Army during the Civil War (I have copy of his military records and know what unit he served in). Stated in his military records he lived in Ohio till 1865, moved to Illinois, then to Nebraska. His parents, Nancy, and his family all moved to Nebraska. Nancy died in April 1873, I do not know where she is buried. After Nancy died, my great-grandfather married my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Richardson in Seward, Nebraska on July 2, 1873 . They had nine children, all born in Nebraska.

Is there anyone who knows the Robinson and Harris family, or any information on them? How do I go about finding out more on the family in the Tuscarusras County? Any help would be most welcomed. Would love to share information and pictures I have.
Thank you.

Brenda

Thomas and Elizabeth Arthur family in Stark County, Ohio in 1870 and 1880 census.

Thomas and Elizabeth Arthur were age 41 on the 1870 census
in Stark County, Ohio. Thier children all born in Ohio were:
Jane A, 13; Mary 8; Ella or Ellen 6; Arthur (3).

The 1880 census of Stark County, Ohio has the father, Thomas,
age 53. His wife had died.
Children in his home all born in Ohio: Ella/Ellen,1; Thomas,
12; and James, 10.

Thomas and Elizabeth were born in England and first were in Tuscarawas County, Ohio in 1860. Children on the 1860 were Jane A. age 2 and John W. 9 months both born in
Ohio.
What I would like to learn is the parentage of Thomas
Arthur. What was Elizabeth's maiden name and where they
married. I believe I have the parentage...but no actual
proof that I have the correct man for sure.
HARRIS Family in Tuscarawas County

My German HARRIS family can be verified back to John HARRIS DOB 2/1804-DOD 2/1881. He was born in Mifflin County, PA and moved to Tuscarawas County in the early 1880s with his family. There my GGgrandfather, George H. Harris was born on 1/1830 and as a result of another move to Daviess Couty IN, died in Raglesville on 2/1867 as a result of his Civil War wounds. While our family was in Tuscarawas County, his son, my GGrandfather, was born 3/1851 and died in Indianapolis IN 7/1946. During the moves our family continued to marry German/Swiss partners. I have a great deal of info and would be glad to share. My brick wall, is John HARRISes parents and entry into U.S. Always glad to find other cousins though. Thanks, FRED
