On 27 Jan 1831 John Kritzer married Elizabeth Raver in Stark County. In 1840 there is a John Kritzer family living in Green Towhsip of Summit County which fits the profile of this marriaed couple. I believe this is the John and Elizabeth Critzer I find in Berrein County, Michigan as early as 1842. There were also Raber/Raver familes here at that time. I would like to contact anyone working on this family. .

Am looking for a death record of Alice Outten Shield Martell.
She was born in VA 1868. First husband was Leroy Asa Shield he died in VA. She relocated to Akron OH & appears on the 1920 Ohio Census married to Euclid Martell. I am quite sure she lived until at least the late 1940's.
Is there a web address for the state of Ohio statistics for birth marriages & deaths? I do know Missouri has an excellent one free on line!
Thank you!

Martin, Cover, Evans, Sterrett, Baysinger, Davis, Burgan, Duryer

Anything ring a bell with the Alexander Martin family (he died in 1855 in Bath, Summit County, Ohio. His wife Sarah d. 1890 same place. Both buried at Bath Center.
Presume his sister Esther married Michael Cover on 21 May 1840 by Rev. Daniel M. Conant. 1840 census is a Mrs. Martin and daughter. Alexander is too young to have a daughter Esther of marrying age in 1840.
Michael and Esther Cover's daughter Mary married Perry Evans on 15 October 1865 then Thomas Sterrett on 27 October 1879. The Evans had two children Clarence (broken link) then Esther who married Frank J. Baysinger on 4 October 1893 in Sharon, Medina County, Ohio. Mary Evans Sterrett died on 12 May 1925 in Medina County, Ohio, Frank J. Baysinger d. 23 November 1926, Esther Baysinger d. 19 November 1959...all in Medina County, Ohio.
Alexander and Sarah Martin family:
Belinda N. married Henry L. Duryer on 26 August 1855. No known children.
Mildred L. married William Davis on 25 December 1866.
The Davis clan:
Ruby S. Davis married Wilbur Burgan and had these children Dean, Harold, and Kenneth and lived in Richfield, Copley, and Cuyahoga Falls from 1900-1920 per census.
Walter R. Davis, 16, in Bath, Summit, Ohio (link broken)
Carl L. Davis was married to a Jessie, children were William, 19, Lillie R., 18, Mildred L., 13, Robert M., 10, and Richard C. per 1920 census, First Ward, Akron, Summit County, Ohio.
I am also assuming the Mrs. Martin in the 1840 census of Bath, Summit, Ohio is the mother of Alexander and Esther Martin Cover. Would like to connect with descendants of these families and to find out who is the Mr. Martin presumed deceased per the 1840 census of Bath, Summit County, Ohio. Alexander, age 42, per 1850 census, Bath, Summit, Ohio is claiming birth in Pennsylvania.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Esther Martin Cover must have died prior to 1846 as Michael married Mary Henney that year in Wayne County, Ohio.

Hello, I am look for census maps for the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census. What I need to find out is if certain streets fell in Barberton, Norton Twp, Coventry Twp, Kenmore or Akron in those years. Even better would be to have the census precincts listed on them.

If these types of maps are not available, is there an on line searchable index for streets (instead of surnames) for the census years listed above?

Biography - JOHN E. GOUL (1857-1927), Hudson, Summit Co., OH; Trowbridge, Allegan Co. & Sand Lake, Kent Co., MI

J. E. GOUL, a leading lumberman of Northern Kent, was born in HUDSON, SUMMIT CO., OHIO, Jan. 23, 1857. His parents, John and Catharine Goul, were natives of Germany. They removed to Allegan Co., Mich., in 1858. Mr. Goul was reared on a farm, and was educated in the Allegan High School. In May, 1873, he came to Sand Lake and clerked in a grocery store two years, and subsequently engaged in manufacturing shingles, which he still follows. He owns a shingle-mill in Solon, and is one of the old business men of Sand Lake. He was married Oct. 20, 1880, to Miss Georgia CRABB, daughter of George W. and Anna L. Crabb, born in Jennings Co, Ind., Nov. -, 1861. Mr. G. is a member of the I. 0. of 0. F., and is a Democrat, He is now President of the village, and has served as member of the Council two years.

HISTORY OF KENT COUNTY, MICHIGAN (1881), Chas. C. Chapman & Co., Chicago, Pg. 1261

****************

JOHN E. GOUL, the most prominent business man of Sand Lake, Nelson township, KENT COUNTY, Mich., is a native of SUMMIT COUNTY, OHIO, and was born January 23, 1857, the eldest of three children that constituted the family of John and Catherine (KEYES) GOUL, and of these three one son, Charles A., is a farmer of Allegan county, Mich.; one is deceased, and John E. is virtually the head of the family, as far as seniority of years is concerned, both parents being deceased. John Goul, the father of the subject, was born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, in 1826, and was a cooper by trade. He came to America at the age of twenty-one years and lived in Ohio until 1858, and was there engaged in farming until his coming to MICHIGAN in the year last mentioned. In Trowbridge, Allegan county, he purchased a farm, and on this he passed away in 1883, a member of the Lutheran church, and greatly respected as a man and a citizen. Politically he was strongly democratic, but was never an office seeker. His wife was a native of Wurtemberg, Germany, was born in 1824 and died in 1887, also in the faith of the Lutheran church. John E. Goul was a mere babe when brought to MICHIGAN by his parents, and until sixteen years of age attended school in Allegan county, although much of his present advanced knowledge was gained through self inculcation. His business life was begun, at the age of nineteen, in the manufacture of lumber and shingles at Sand Lake at a time when twenty-five lumber and shingle mills were operated at or near that place, but later had some experience in conducting a general store-carrying a stock of dry goods, groceries and the various other commodities usually suited to country trade. In January,1876, he commenced mercantile business in Sand Lake, and this, but not altogether exclusively, has been his home. In 1881, he erected a shingle and lumber plant in Ensley township, Newaygo county, which he controlled until 1882, but did not relinquish his business interests in Sand Lake. In 1889 he erected in this town his present mill for the manufacture of lumber and shingles. He handled the product of other mills as well as his own, and from 1875 to 1880 assisted materially in clearing up this section. In the spring of 1891 he manifested another degree of enterprise by forming a partnership with James H. Brayman in the grain and feed business and the erection of a grain elevator at the cost of $2,500. From this elevator grain and feed are shipped north and to points in the extreme east, and although the firm commenced with handling ten or eleven cars per annum only, it now handles at least 100 cars. This elevator is the best on the G. R. & I. R. R., north of the city of Grand Rapids, and the fair and square dealinig of Mr. Goul and his partner have gained for it the extensive volume of trade it is now favored with. Beside owning their elevator, Messrs. Goul & Brayman are the possessors of sixty-five acres of land just north across the boundary line between Kent and Montcalm counties, and this land is made subservient to the interests of the firm. Mr. Goul was united in marriage, October 20, 1880, with Miss Georgia CRABBE, a native of Jennings county, Ind., born November 28, I861, and a daughter of George W. and Anna L. (WEEKS) CRABBE, residents of Sand Lake, the result of this marriage being one son George E. Thay also reared two girls, Lena and Iva CULLOM, who remained in the family from childhood to maturity. As a democrat, Mr. Goul cast his first presidential vote for Winfield Scott Hancock in I880, and since then has been favored by his party by election to various official positions. For nine years he has served as a member of the town council of Sand Lake, and for seventeen consecutive years he has been connected with the public school board. He has also served two terms consecutively as supervisor of Nelson township (although the township gives about 200 majority for the republicans as a rule), and was chairman of that body one year. At the memorable deadlock in October, 1899, regarding the apportionment of enumertion between city and country, Mr. Goul led the fight, and after twenty days won a victory by securing a less percentage to the township. In 1898 he was nominated for representative from the third legislative district in the state assembly, and made a very close run. Several times he has represented his party in county and state conventions, and it would be only a waste of words to further demonstrate the popularity which his genial disposition and unswerving integrity have won for him. Fraternally, he is a member of Cedar Springs lodge, F. & A. M., and but few persons in Sand Lake stand higher in the esteem of the public than John E. Goul.

THE CITY OF GRAND RAPIDS AND KENT COUNTY, Mich (1900), A.W. Bowen & Co., Pgs. 710-711
I've got all the basic facts about early settlement and the businesses that have come... and gone over the past 200 years. (for those who don't know, Middlebury was here before Akron) What I am lacking is recent history, but more, personal stories from those who grew up and/or worked in the neighborhood. If this describes you or someone you know, I would love to hear your stories. And pictures would be very welcome and helpful.
Thanks,

Rodney D.

Hi.

I am trying to locate relatives of Mr.Peter Durnan and his wife Mrs. Annie Callahan Durnan. Towards the ends of their lives, they lived at 275 Goodview St.in Akron. In the late 1930's they lived at 299 Sobul Ave. They relocated from Philadelphia to Akron, about 1920.

Peter Durnan, b. 23 Sep 1894 in Philadelphia to Edward and Mary Durnan. Peter had a number of brothers and sisters, including, John, Mary, Rose, Edward, Thomas and Francis. Peter Durnan died in Akron 22 Jan 1979.

Annie Callahan b. abt. 1896 in Philadelphia to Owen and Hannah McCarthy Callahan. Annie died in Akron, 16 Aug 1973, at the age of 77.

Annie's father lived with them in the late 30's. His obituary mentions one grandchild (no sex given). I also cannot find their 1930 entry in the Census, which might give the child's name. That child was not mentioned by name in either Annie or Peter's obituary. I am guessing there may have been only one child as Owen Callahan died in 1937 and the likelihood that Annie had another child in her 40's was probably not high.

If you recognize this family, I'd love to talk with you.

Durnan - Akron, Ohio

Hi.

I would like to get an obit looked up in Akron. The death occurred on 25 Nov 1937. The deceased person was Owen Callahan, widower of Hannah McCarthy Callahan. The body was moved to Philadelphia for burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. I am hopeful that he relocated with relatives and I can fill in some family from that line.

Can anyone tell me if there is a library that provides lookup service in the Akron area?

Thanks.

My Mom has been troubled for years about a vivid memory she has of two nuns jumping over a ledge or gorge in a park off Grant Street in Akron. She was about five or six (maybe 1935 or 1936) when she and he little sister approached two nuns standing on the ledge. As Mom and my aunt neared, the nuns jumped. She remembers running with her screaming sister away but nothing afterwards. Both girls remember the incident, but want to know if it really happened and what happened. It troubles them to this day. Can anyone tell us if this did happen?

Hi my name is Tammy Vargas and I am looking for information on my 3rd great grandparents Daniel and Christina Plum(b) Arnold. I know that Daniel's father was Samuel Arnold and his mother was Elizabeth?Arnold. And that Christina's father is Jacob Plum(b)it may be that the Plums were Jewish. Jeremiah Arnold was born 1827 I think in Ohio and married Harriet Siekley on 4th of July I can't remember the year at the moment. They moved to Mo and I am unsure of the family members that stayed in Ohio. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Tammy

Hi all ... I'm new to the forum. Nice to meet you!

I'm a rookie at this, but am working on a project to get my in-law's 1840 Norton, OH farmhouse a century home plaque. We also live on a parcel of the same farmland.

I know quite a bit about the house and some about the previous owners. I'd like to find out about who built it, though ... I have a 1874 Summit County Atlas map with an owners name on what I am 99.9% sure is our land.

Any advice or direction would be much much much appreciated.

Warmest regards,
Christine Hoffman
BRANDYWINE CEMETERY:
Destroyed. Gravestone inscriptions published in the Chapter newsletter "The Highpoint" June 1989, pg 44. Originally in Boston Twp but was annexed by NorthfieldTownship in 1819. Was located near Rt 8, south of Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery, in a woody area in back of 2110 and 2128Brandywine Road. The bodies and stones were moved in 1970 to Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery, in Northfield Twp, to make way for new Rt 271.

Does anyone have a copy of this newsletter? I would love to get a copy. It is possible that some of my Leslie ancestors were buried in this cemetery.

MYERS, Luther Hayden was borb approx. 1915, somewhere in Virginia. The only info I have is that he was supposedly in the Merchant Marines, and was possibly a bus driver in Akron around 1944. I just found out that this man was my Grandfather. He would have been living with a Janet Marian Copen-Cornett in Akron, around that time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He may have died in Summit County.

I would especially like a wedding picture and even a wedding picture of Samuel and his wife Almeda/Amelia Rush Strole, or any picture of them or their family. We have a picture of Samuel's father Henry Franklin Strole and are willing to share.

Viola looks to be about 3 to 6 years old and she was born in 1908 to Paul and Mattie Ward Viers. I think she married Paul Viers in 1907 because the 1910 census states she had been married 3 years. Mattie's parents were Henry Franklin and Mary Helmick Strole.

Need marriage license lookup please

I need the marriage license for Mattie Ward Strole and Paul Viers. She had a child Viola that was born in June 1908 and Mattie was born Sept 14, 1890, so I assume she must have married between 1905 and 1908. I would also like her marriage license to Aaron Bidykoffer who she was married to when she died at the age of 28 on April 27, 1919. I have a picture of her as Mattie Davis, so possibly she was married to a man named Davis between Mr. Viers and Mr. Bidykoffer. She lived at 271 Union Street in Cuyahoga Falls when she died.

Mattie's daughter Viola May Viers was married to Victor Limric when she died at the age of 24 on 4 January 1933 and they lived in Springfield, Summit County, Ohio. I suspect she married between 1924 and 1933. She died from complications of a miscarriage. This is probably asking a lot but I wish to find her marriage license too in the hopes that I can find family to provide them copies of Mattie and Viola that we just found in my mother's closet. Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
