I am a decendent of Samuel Hall through his daughter, Elizabeth, who married John B. McWhinney. My grandmother, Wilda McWhinney, was the daughter of Cullen McWhinney and Sibbie Reed. She married Roy E. Bixler. Would be interested in sharing information with others related to this family.

John Spade marriage to Margaret Farper or Farber

Does anyone have access to an index or original record of a marriage for John Spade and Margaret Farper or Farber on
January 13, 1824 in Stark Co., Ohio. I need to verify information I found online. If there is a marriage record does it give a middle initial or name for either John or Margaret? I would love other marriages for the Spade surname in Stark Co., Ohio if anyone has that info.

email me at:
pjmcg5@gmail.com
thanks very much in advance

I believe it is in Nimishillen Township. I found the cemetery, and unfortunately, my own relative is in an unmarked grave. I would be happy to look for your relative's marker, transcribe, take pictures, etc. Please just let me know and I'd be happy to help. The cemetery is between Alliance and Hartville (OH), out in the country, off the main road. Thanks to the others who helped me find it as well.

In my research of Corabelle Knight I have traced the Knight family back to Jacob Knight b. 1788 PA and his wife, Martha Dixon.

I do not have information on all of this Jacob's children, although I do have the names.
One of Jacob's sons was Benoni Knight who married Eleanor Firestone. Their son, George Firestone Knight married Margaret Price. This couple had Charles Knight and Cora Belle. I have Charles Knight married to Eva C. Black. Their children were Earl and Paul.Paul married Ruth Bream and Earl married Grace L. Brown. I only know of one child from this union - Betty Jane Knight b. 1917 - 1918 OH.

If this is your line then Earl and Betty were your ancestors. How related? Can you fill me in on what might be missing information for me? I will happily reciprocate.

Revae
California

Email me directly.

My name is Vicki Stephens and I am also looking for descendents of Robert Pinn. I am working for the Henrico County (Virginia) Historical Society. We are erecting an historical marker recognizing the service of the U.S. Colored Troops Medal of Honor recipients who fought in the battle of Chaffin's Farm. We would like to invite descendents of any of the recipients to participate in the ceremony. Any help you could provide will be greatly appreciated.

According to the enlistment records, he joined up with Battery A on February 20, 1863 at the age of 18. Yes, it's possible to see a discharge to enroll in another unit, but there is a time lag here, so I don't know why the discharge and then reenlistment unless it has something to do with his age?

I suspect these two Herberts are one in the same. I'll be more than glad to share his photo with you and can email it. Please let me know what email you'd like it sent to.

This is what I know about him. Herbert C. Fessenden joined Battery A, 1st Ohio Light Artillery as a recruit at Nashville, and participated in all of the marches, battles and skirmishes during the campaigns of 1864, to Atlanta and return. Received a short furlough while the command remained at Gallatin. Discharged at Cleveland, Ohio, July 31st, 1865. After the war, he lived in Twinsburgh, Summit Co., Ohio.

Now, he might have moved to Michigan. The picture is of a Herbert Fessenden in his Civil War uniform and his looks quite young. Would any of the rest of this information make sense for your ancestor?

Hi,

It's great to hear from another Shaup descendant! I actually met "Aunt Bertha" when I was in Colorado visiting my Aunt Carol, who lived in Loveland, Colorado. Maybe you have met her?

You have given me much more information to think about regarding Henry Shaup. I knew he was a railroad man, and that he lived in Birmingham, but that's about it.

Ralph and Mary Grier were my great-grandparents. I never knew Mary, but vividly remember Ralph. I have a 4-generation picture of Ralph, his daughter, Grace (my grandmother), my father, and my sister and myself. It is a priceless treasure of mine. It was taken a few months before he died.

Do you know what Grace Rickard died of? I always wondered.

I will look at my tree and see what I have to add to your information about the Shaup's. I also think the Shaups' were of Swiss descent; I saw an electronic copy of Henry Shaup, Sr's death certificate, and it listed Switzerland as his birthplace. I think I found this at the Wichita Public Library in the genealogy department.

I do know that Mary (Shaup) Grier had really bad crippling arthritis. Calvin H. Shaup and Mary E. Tate were married around April 24, 1873 in Hopkins Co., KY.

That's really about all I know, except that I have photos of the tombstones of Ralph & Mary Grier, and Calvin and Mary Shaup.

Thanks for the response,
Sincerely,
Pam Good

I am interested in the photo of Herbert Fessenden of whom you have a picture. Is this the Herbert C. Fessenden from Stark Co., Ohio that was a member of the 49th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and who sometime after the war moved to and apparently died in Michigan? The 49th Illinois was my great grandfather's regiment and I am interested in all things involving the regiment. Could you send me a scanned copy of the picture? From the regimental records he was about 14 when he joined up and I seem to remember reading some place that both he and his father were into music. Thanks Geoff Satter

Thanks for your response to my query about Herbert Fessenden. According to the regimental records of 49th Illinois, John, Frank and Herbert C. Fessenden joined this regiment. In 1861 Frank claimed to be 16 and born in Ohio, Herbert to be 14 and born in Summit County, Ohio - they both enlisted on January 1, 1862 - but the regimental records give no such data on John Fessenden. All soon were discharged from the 49th, Frank on May 1, 1862, Herbert on May 16, 1862 and John on May 26, 1862. There were no reasons listed for their discharges in spite of the fact that enlistments in the 49th were for 3 years. Could they have been discharged in order to join other units? Is the enlistment date for Herbert in the Ohio unit after he was discharged from the 49th? Frank applied for a pension in 1891, Herbert C.'s widow applied for a pension in 1888, and John applied for a pension in 1879. Born John's and Herbert's pension index cards only list their service in the 49th - only Herbert's widow applied for a pension based upon his service. Frank's card indicated additional service in the bands of the 18th and 27th US Infantries. What appears to be these same three men are listed in the household of John W. Fessenden in 1860 in Summit Co., Ohio, John being the father and Frank and Herbert being 2 of his sons. The 1880 census lists Herbert C., Sarah and Manorah Fessenden in Saginaw Co., Michigan. In 1870 the census lists "H. E.", Sarah and Manora Fessenden in Charlestown, Portage Co., Ohio. Have you found any indication that there were 2 Herbert Fessendens in this part of Ohio during the Civil War era or are the men that were in the Illinois and Ohio units one and the same?

I am trying to find names of my teachers and classmates in Freedom Elementary School between 1962-1966. I have class photos for Miss Binion's kindergarten class in 1962 and Mrs. Hampu's fourth grade class in 1966. I can't remember who my teachers were for first and third grade (I went to Liberty for second grade, and moved to Akron in the middle of fourth grade) If you remember any teachers from there tell me, I might remember them when I hear them. I have first names for most of the kids in fourth grade, but only one last name. I would also like to eventually find class photos for first and third grade, and find my brother's, who doesn't have any of his. I have posted the two class photos I have at: http://www.genealogywise.com/group/starkcountyohioschoolphot... I and am hoping others will contribute their class photos to the site.

Hi Linda,

I am in the process of organizing and updating my files and will try to get all the information I have added to my ancestry.com tree so you can see it. I few years ago I went to the Alliance library and did some research and was able to obtain a copy of John T's estate papers. It was one long drawn out process, and it is too hard to guess a century later what all the difficulties were. But one very interesting thing I learned was that was a daughter older than Esther, named Mary Ann. If my memory is correct, I don't believe shows in the census records, I know she isn't listed in the 1880. I wonder if maybe she had a different mother, who died, and was raised by her mother's family?
Do you have any information on when or where John and Hannah were married? I would really love to be able to find out what town or region of Wales our family comes from. Have you had any luck looking into that?
I believe I have a picture of Isabelle Leisenheimer. If I can locate it, I will scan it and send it to your email address.
Alice
Hello Alice,

I was glad to get your message. My Jones relative is Sarah Jones Grant. The Robert Grant you met was her son. His sister, Isabelle Grant Leisenheimer, was my grandmother, although I never knew her. I'm thrilled to share information with you. I found Will Jones in the Ohio Death Index and went to Akron to get his death notice. I've been trying to find the Joneses and where they ended up. I found Joshua, Will, Rea(Illingworth), Elizabeth, and Esther. Linda Morgan

If you are still looking for Shaup info, I will be glad to share. I always thought the family was Swiss. Please let me know if you have questions. Have a good evening, Beth Smith

Hi, My Mom's Father was Calvin Henry Shaup, he was my Grandfather.
His son Henry married and lived in Birmingham Alabama with his wife Alma. They had 1 son named Wendell, who married Lucy and they had one son, also named Henry. That son lived in Seattle, Washington, married and had 2 daughters. He died of cancer, so the this branch of the Shaup family died out with him.
Uncle Henry was an Engineer on the RailRoad. They had a beautiful home on Shades Mountain in Birmingham, with a 3 car unattached garage which had a workshop above the garages. There was a peach orchard too. Back then, he had few neighbors, I'm talking about the 1940's when I was last there.
Henry was the only son of Calvin and Elizabeth, but he had 5 sisters, Emma, Alma, Mary, Bertha who was my Mom, and Grace.
Emma married Mark Means and lived in Derby, Kansas. They had 2 chldren, Clyde and Ruth. Clyde married Norma and had 6 girls and 1 boy, they lived on a farm near Wichita. Their children were: Nadine, Joan, Lois Jean, Beth Mauine, Shirley Ruth, Judy Kay and Jerry Jack.
Ruth married Cecil Bassett had 3 children, Daryl D., Ruth Ann and Glenda Kay. They ived in Wichitam Kansas.
Mary married Ralph Grier and lived on a farm in Andover Kansas. They had 3 daughters, Vera(Bally),Grace (Allison) &Helen (Stucker.
Alma married Eldon Colson and lived in Wichita, they had 3 sons, Maurice, Don and Gene. Gene was a pilot and was shot down during WWII and was never found.
Bertha, my mom married Clarence C. Harvey and lived in Denver, Colorado, they had 2 children, me, Claribeth & my brother Glenn Allen.
Grace married, I think his name was Frank Rickard. I'm not sure where they lived, but likely in Kansas. Grace died very young. They had 1 daughter, Willa(married Joseph Apperson)and they lived in Long Beach,CA.
That was probably more than you wanted to know. I'd be happy to add more if you have questions.
I'm soon going to do a Shaup Family Tree as soon as I finish with my husband's Mom's (Parker) Family. I'd love to have any info you have on Calvin and Elizabeth. I do remember Mom saying he called her "Libby." He was dead before I was born, and Grandma Shaup died when I was about 5 years old, I think.
Unfortunately, I wasn't into trees when Mom was still alive and really know very little about her family, other than those I've listed above. The children of all the Shaup's grandchildren were around my age as I was growing up and I spent a couple of weeks several summers with the Bassett's. Thanks!
Have a good day!
Wow! This is so cool! We really are related. Your Aunt Carol is Mrs. Warren McCollough, (Mark and Susan)?

I think I vaguely remember meeting some of Ralph and Mary's daughters, and I honestly don't remember if I ever really met Carol, but knew she'd married and moved to CO from Mom. I just looked at the address card I have for the McC, it has 3736 Valley Oak Dr. There is a note that Mark graduated college and also got his MBA from DU in 87/88, and Susan was a Freshman at CU that yeear. That is the last I heard from Carol. You might tell her that Mom lived to be 101, almost 102 years old. We moved here here in 1975, I think it was. She was 10-2-1886-died 9-3-1988.
I have a lot more to tell you, but would like to do it via e-mail. Also have pixtures of Grandma Shaup and Ralph & Mary and other family members I'd like to send to you.
Drop me a note, and I'll do that, ```````Beth ....chsmith35@hotmail.com

My grandfather was institutionalized there in 1928 for schizophrenia precox, a diagnosis that no longer exists. Basically, my grandfather was probably psychotic. he was there until he was deemed no longer a threat to the society. He was then transfered to a nursing home, where he lived out the rest of his days.

Massilon State Hospital was built in 1892 and has always been used to instituionalize the insane. It was one of the first asylums based on the 'cottage' principle. We see it used now with adolescents in group homes.

My ancestor Joseph A. Hemann, was a teacher at some Catholic school in Canton in 1838/1839. We're guessing he taught at St. John the Baptist Church/School. How many Catholic schools were in Canton in the late 1830s? We have his marriage record from Jan 1839 at St. John the Baptist.
