Yes!! I'm amazed. Edward Christman was Silas R. Christman's brother, (my grteat grandpa). Ed and Clare resided in Massillon, Ohio and bought property in Michigan. In his old age, Ed came to stay at Silas J Christman's farm, (my grandpa), where he gave my Dad a silver dollar in abt. 1945. From there, Ed went to stay with my great uncle Charlie, (Glenn Christman)at the old home place outside of Hamler, Ohio. Shortly after that, he passed away. If you click on the following link and scroll to the bottom of the 1870 Federal census you'll see my great great grandparents, Jacob abd Caroline Christman: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...

As you might know, Silas R. Christman passed away in 1900 from diptheria. He is buried at Sugar Ridge Cemetery outside Leipsic, Ohio acrossed the highway from my other relatives. Let me know if I can be helpful.

I'm searching for the parents of my 4x great grandpa, Jacob Christman who married Elizabeth Lauffer and resided in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania.

Sincerely,

Will Christman
332 Cherry Street
Findlay, Ohio 45840
jchristman9@att.net
(419) 581-2511

Hi Mary,

It only took ten years for me to answer. I remember seeing Daniel in the records but couldn't find him tonight. I think I remember reading about Father Jacob Christman in the History of Stark, or maybe Tuscarawas County.

My family has a Margaret Christman. She was the wife of John Christman, aunt and uncle of my 2x great grandpa, Jacob Christman. They came to Stark County Ohio from Westmorelnad County Pennsylvania in the 1850s. The following 1870 census for Stark County, Tuscarawas Township, Wilmot, Ohio lists them: http://search.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx=View&r=an&dbid...
- Will Christman jchristman9@att.net

Wow! Thanks so much for your help, and thanks especially for finding it and sending it on a holiday weekend. I've grabbed a few minutes here and there, and believe I can now trace Elizabeth/Betsy Brown back through David Brown and Barbara, to Mathias Brown, to Henry Braun, born 1744 in Germany. Now, if those wives would just make their surnames known! I'm beginning to suspect that if I can find William Cook, it's likely the name somewhere changes to Koch.

Again, my heartfelt thanks to you.

Janice in Indiana

Is there any information available about William Cook and his wife Elizabeth or Betsy? They were in Whitley County, Indiana by 1860 and I just found them in Marlboro Twp, Stark County, Ohio in 1850. At the time, their children were Sarah, "Barbary", and Alfred. Also living with them was a 66 year old female, "Barbary" Brown, whom I suspect was Elizabeth's mother. William Cook was born in Pennsylvania and Elizabeth/Betsy was born in Ohio. There are several Cooks in the same Marlboro Twp in the 1830 census, and Peter would fit as William's father.

William's daughter, "Barbary" married William Withers in Whitley County, Indiana.

Does anyone know anything of these Cooks, or a potential lead on Barbary Brown? With names like Cook and Brown, I'm going to need a bit of help, I suspect! Thanks!

Janice in Indiana

I was wondering if Schaup (e) and Schauve could be the same surname in anyway? All I have to work with is Schane, which I am sure was not the immigrants surname. My gr gr grandfather married to her. My surname is BRENT but his was WENDT when he immigrated. He joined the US calvary where they changed his surname to Brant. So, when he was naturalized he changed it to Brent (probably because of the Brant goose and for him possibly an insult?). Any info or input would be appreciated!

Steven Brent
Oregon

Hi,

This is mostly about John, but links him to Thomas.

From the History of Stark County page 901:

"Dr. John Bonfield had at one time been a surgeon in the army and was a well-informed man, but rather eccentric in certain ways, careless in the makeup of his apparel and slow of speech. As he was more or less of an office seeker he never became very popular as a physician. His wife was a sister of Thomas Cunningham, the carpenter, whom many of the old citizens will remember."
Page 906: "The two Bonfields, John and Thomas S., brothers, settled in Canton soon after the War of 1812. They were from Baltimore, and both graduates of the medical school of that city. John was an assistant surgeon of the army at the time of the attack upon Fort McHenry. He was a strange genius, and many thought too much learning had disturbed his balance. He was slovenly dressed, wore his hair long and straggling, and would often appear with a red bandana as a necktie. He was slow of speech, and kept his horse so poor that the boys would "caw" after him on the streets. Many reposed great faith in his medical skill, particularly in the treatment of fevers. He had an itching for office and was repeatedly a candidate, though never successful. He came within one in a race of half a dozen for the county treasurer's office. He married a daughter of William Cunningham, by whom he had several children. Several years after her death he returned to Baltimore, where he died in 1835."

I don't know I tied Wesley and Thomas P. to John and Mary. I know they has at least two sons and two daughters according to the 1830 census. I also have John's death as 1846 according to an obit in the Ohio Repository on October 7, 1846. Mary and John's marriage was announced in the Repository on May 22, 1817. They married on the 21st.

I found an index of tax records for John in 1829 & 30 and Thomas for 1826,27,29 & 30- all in Canton. I have not sent for the details.

In the Ohio Repository on Dec, 17, 1840: "Died: On the 5th inst., Mrs. Bonfield, mother of Dr. Thomas S. Bonfield, at an advanced age."

I also have a copy of a page from a Stark County history. Unfortunately, I didn't jot down the title, but I can find again they next time I am in Ft. Wayne. It is on page 307 and the heading is Canton Township:
" Although a distinct portion of the history of Stark County will be devoted to the medical fraternity, in which all the pioneer physicians will receive full notice, we deem it due to the history of Canton to revert briefly to the earlier doctors who came here after Dr. Rappe, of whom as the first one, a fuller notice has above been given. After him, the brothers John and Thomas Bonfield came and practiced in this city and neighborhood. Dr. John came first, and though a man of decided ability, was somewhat odd in his manners and dress, and had a penchant for holding some public office, an ambition however, which he was never able to gratify. Dr. Thomas S. came shortly after, and was in nearly every respect totally unlike his brother; he was a popular practitioner, a zealous member of the Methodist Church and a noted skater."

I also have a listing from the Baltimore Patriot, 2/11/1824, listing Justice of the Peace appointments. Dr. John Bonfield of the 4th district is listed. I suspect this may be the father of Thomas and John? My (rather strange) John was already in Canton by 1824.

I would like to identify John and Mary's children and also find a death date for Mary. I am trying to piece together the Cunningham generation of Mary and Thomas and their parents' generation as well. I have hit a wall.

I'll keep digging and let you know if I find anything else.

Candy

Candy, I think you're close but my records indicate a John Bonfield, dob ± 1750, was the father of my GG grandfather Thomas Shaw Bonfield, dob ± 1796 in Baltimore Co., Maryland. Thomas Shaw married Sarah Weaver (Troop), 27 may 1826. They had 2 children, 1. Thomas Philip dob, Apr 1827, and Wesley, dob Nov. 1828. This Wesley in my Great grandfather. Both Thomas Philip and Wesley were born in Canton, Ohio. This Wesley did indeed die in Wilmet, IL in 1916. Thomas Shaw Bonfield died in Canton, Ohio 16 Mar 1855. Unfortunately, I lost much of my readily available information when my computer died last year. I have hardcopy of most of it but I haven't been able to spend the time retrieving the info as I would like to. I have a reference, that I am pursuing, that shows a John Bonfield married Mary Cunningham in Canton, Ohio, on 25 May 1817. I am trying to determine if this is the brother John of Thomas Shaw. I will continue to dig into this and keep in touch. If you come up with anything more, I would appreciate it. P.S. Both John and Thomas were doctors.

Chuck,

Was your John Bonfield married to Mary Cunningham in 1817 in Canton, Ohio? Mary was a sister of my ggg-grandfather. Do you have any information about her? If they are the same, I have two of their children listed. One is Wesley who died in 1916 in Wilmet, IL and the other Thomas P., who died in 1913 in Kankakee, IL. I think John Bonfield went back to Baltimore after Mary died and died in 1846.

Candy Cunningham-David

Calvary Cemetery has many different sections within the grounds. Ex: Blessed Virgin, St Michael, etc. I don't know exactly how many sections they are, but can I help you in some? I live only minutes from the cemetery.

In my research of Corabelle Knight I have traced the Knight family back to Jacob Knight b. 1788 PA and his wife, Martha Dixon.

I do not have information on all of this Jacob's children, although I do have the names.
One of Jacob's sons was Benoni Knight who married Eleanor Firestone. Their son, George Firestone Knight married Margaret Price. This couple had Charles Knight and Cora Belle. I have Charles Knight married to Eva C. Black. Their children were Earl and Paul.Paul married Ruth Bream and Earl married Grace L. Brown. I only know of one child from this union - Betty Jane Knight b. 1917 - 1918 OH.

If this is your line then Earl and Betty were your ancestors. How related? Can you fill me in on what might be missing information for me? I will happily reciprocate.

Revae
California

Email me directly.

My name is Vicki Stephens and I am also looking for descendents of Robert Pinn. I am working for the Henrico County (Virginia) Historical Society. We are erecting an historical marker recognizing the service of the U.S. Colored Troops Medal of Honor recipients who fought in the battle of Chaffin's Farm. We would like to invite descendents of any of the recipients to participate in the ceremony. Any help you could provide will be greatly appreciated.
