Name of old hotel run by Speltz/Redfox

Does anybody know anything about an old hotel that was possibly located in Bascom (or maybe Hopewell)? It was run by Mathias and Maria Speltz (Spells/Spelz) probably in the 1850s and then later by their daughter, Mary Redfox, wife of Frederick Redfox. I don't know if the hotel is still around (my guess is that it's not), but it was still around in 1886, as Mary Redfox was listed in the book, "The History of Seneca County, Ohio" that was published that year. Anything would be helpful. Thanks.

Obit 1900 Sudden Death of Mrs. Philip Seifert

Obituary taken from the Advertiser, Tiffin, Ohio:

December 25, 1900
Sudden Death of Mrs. Philip Seifert
When Philip Seifert, a well known pioneer resident of Union Street, arose Monday morning, he found his aged life partner lying on the floor of a room at his home. Investigation revealed that Mrs. Seifert was still alive, but before medical aid could be summoned, she expired; heart trouble being the cause of death. The deceased had been in her usual good health up to the time of retiring Sunday evening.

Mrs. Seifert, born Thiery, was born in Germany 77 years ago and came to America in 1847, settling with her parents in Seneca Township. On February 20, 1850, she was married to her grief-stricken husband, in New Riegel. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in this city last February, at which time the Advertiser published an extended biographical sketch of the highly respected couple. Eight children of the deceased survive.

The funeral services will be held in St. Joseph's Caholic Church at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning.

Obituary for Joel W. Platt Dec. 02, 1897

Obituary for Joel W. Platt
Tiffin Daily Tribune,
Dec. 02, 1897, Thursday Evening, Page 4 Column 3
Another of Seneca county's pioneers passed, quietly away at his home in Republic, Wednesday, about 12 o'clock. Mr Platt ate his breakfast of oyster soup and coffee and was feeling as well as usual. About noon Mrs Platt ran for her daughter, Mrs J L Cole and when they returned to the house they found him sitting in his chair unconscious and he soon passed to the great beyond. Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church, Friday morning, at 10 o'clock.
Joel W Platt was born in Steuben county, NY, Jan 12, 1809, and came to Seneca county, Ohio, in 1834 and was married to Amanda Norton, June 1, 1834. To this union were born six children--three sons and three daughters, four of which survive him--Mrs M E Way, Mrs A Maria Cole, of Republic, J C Platt of Missouri, and Styles Platt, of Fostoria. The oldest son, Edson, died in the army. He leaves also sixteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. Mrs Platt, his faithful companion of sixty-three years, survives him and is in her eighty-seventh year. She is able to do her light housekeeping. Mr Platt's postoffice address has always been Republic, since he came to Ohio. He was a charter member of the Republic Baptist church. He has always been an honorable, upright citizen, beloved by all who knew him. During his life he has suffered from many hardships. At one time while at work he fell from a ladder, breaking his arm and injuring him on his head. He had his second eyesight and was able to read the newspapers without the aid of glasses. At times he would be unable to hear a person's voice and perhaps the next day be able to hear common conversation.
Nicholas Marx/Marks 1809-1887- New Riegel

In 1847 Nicholas Marx and his wife Theresia came to the USA from Meysembourg, Mersch, Luxembourg. On the ship, the Bark Case, along with them were Nicholas's niece, Elisabeth Hoffmann, a daughter of his oldest sister, Anne Margaretha Marx Theisen, Elisabeth's husband, Nicholas Hoffmann, and their 22 month-old daughter, Margaretha, plus a nephew, Nicholas Theisen. In the next year or so, the entire Theisen family joined the Marx and Hoffmann families in Seneca County. That included Anne Margaretha Marx and her husband, Johann Theisen, plus two more sons, Nicholas (another one) and a young son Michael Theisen.

Between 1856-1858 the entire Theisen/Hoffmann family moved west to central Minnesota in order for the families to acquire sufficient farmland to support their families.

I wish to know more about the family of Nicholas and Theresa Marx/Marks. This is what I have so far:
Nicholas Marks Jr. born abt Oct 1848 in Senca County
Edward Marks born 31 Oct 1850 in Seneca County
Elisabeth Marks born 3 April 1853 in Seneca County
Anne Marks born abt July 1857 in Seneca County
Michael Marks born abt Sept. 1860 in Seneca County
Catherine Marks born after 1860 in Seneca County
Dominick Marks born after 1860 in Seneca County
Thomas Marks born after 1860 in Seneca County

I am descended from the Hoffmann/Theisen family, and I have acquired information on the Marx ancestors in Luxembourg. I am willing to share this information with descendants of Nicholas and Theresa Marx.

Hello:
I am researching the John Paine family that came to Seneca County, OH, Adams Twp., around the 1830s. Both he and his wife, Sarah Lawrence, were born in Maryland. The Paine and Lawrence families moved to Pickaway County, OH, first then on to Seneca County. I am a direct descendant of the Paine family and the Lawrence family and would like to find the ancestry of these families. They had two sons that I am aware of at this time: Jesse and James. James married Marie or Maria Kline. They had a daughter, Nancy, who married Wilson Pontius, who is my great-great-grandfather. Thank you.

Jan

Geroge H. BRICKNER, (1834-1904)

This from "Portrait and Biographical RECORD of Sheboygan County, Wis." page 521

"HON. GEORGE H. BRICKNER, Member of Congress from the Fifth Wisconsin District, and President of the Brickner Woolen Mills Company, of Sheboygan Falls, was born January 21, 1834, in the village of Anspach, Bavaria, Germany, which is situated near Wurzburg, on the Main, and is a son of Michael and Margaret (Reddelbach) Brickner. His father was born in Anspach, September 20, 1799, and became a thrifty man of affairs, being in comfortable circumstances. After one year in school in his native country, our subject accompanied his parents to America in May, 1840. On reaching the New World, the family settled in Seneca County, Ohio, where the father purchased a farm and engaged in agricultural pursuits. His death occurred at his home in Tiffin, Ohio, June 16, 1883. His good wife, who was born in Rothen, Bavaria, December 8, 1804, died in Tiffin, April 23, 1864. They were consistent members of the Catholic Church, and were much respected.

George H. Brickner pursued his studies in the public schools of his new home, and was employed on his father's farm, where he was taught lessons of morality, industry and economy. In 1850, when sixteen years of age, he began clerking in a general store at Tiffin, Ohio, at the munificent salary of $5 a month. True to the principles of frugality inculcated by home teaching, he lived within that modest income. He devoted himself with assiduity and fidelity to his duties, and soon won promotion and an increase of pay, until in the course of time he received a larger salary than was paid any other clerk in the city, and had several offers of good situations. Early in 1855, Mr. Brickner embarked in merchandising at Tiffin, Ohio, with a partner, but, becoming satisfied that the connection would never prove either pleasant or profitable, he sold his interest to his partner. Having decided to come West and engage in business, he soon got together the fruits of his labor, and before leaving home received a present of $200 from his father, who remarked, "If you make good use of this, I will give you more." Some time later, having been convinced that his son had made good use of the money, he asked him how much more he wanted, and was told, "Not any." From that time forward, George H. made his way successfully and unaided, building up extensive business interests and accumulating valuable property. He received nothing more from his father until the estate was settled a few years since.

In August of 1855, Mr. Brickner removed to the village of Cascade, Sheboygan County, Wis., and there opened a general store. Later, he also owned and operated an ashery, a flouring-mill and a farm, in all of which enterprises he was successful. He continued in business at that place until 1868, when he bought Mr. Prentiss' half-interest in the Sheboygan Falls Woolen Mills, and formed a partnership with B. F. Heald, under the firm name of Brickner & Heald. That connection was continued for four years, when Mr. Brickner bought Mr. Heald's interest, thus becoming sole owner of the property. Having greatly extended the plant, and having purchased the Riverside Mills, he conducted the business alone from that time until 1887, when he converted the business into a corporation. The Brickner Woolen Mills Company was incorporated in May, 1887, with a capital stock of $100,000. George H. Brickner was chosen President, and his son, William Clay, Treasurer. The plant is situated on the west bank of the Sheboygan River, and adjacent to the railroad bridge on the south side. The factory is a fine four-story brick building, two hundred feet long by fifty in width, and is known to the trade as a six-set mill, operated by water-power owned by the company. Eighty hands are employed, and an average of two hundred and fifty thousand pounds of wool are used annually. The manufacture of shawls constitutes the principal products of the mill, although dress goods and cassimeres are manufactured to quite an extent. The capital stock, with the exception of a very small per cent., is held by Mr. Brickner and his family. In 1889, Mr. Brickner engaged in the manufacture of glass at Tiffin, Ohio, in company with Mr. Schieck. This company has an extensive plant, and is the only one in this country that manufactures colored blown Venetian window glass. Its pay-roll amounts to $6,000 a month.

On the 9th of September, 1858, Mr. Brickner was united in marriage at the Church of the Holy Name, in Sheboygan, to Miss Anna Elizabeth Ogle. Mrs. Brickner was born in Maryland, and is a daughter of William and Mary Ogle. She is a descendant of the noted Ogle family of Maryland, which has furnished five Governors for that commonwealth. Samuel Ogle, who came from England in the interests of Lord Baltimore, was provincial Governor in 1732, and his son Benjamin was elected to succeed him in 1798. In later years, three brothers were chosen to the same honorable position.

Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Brickner, of whom three are living. Georgiana, the eldest, is the wife of T. C. Hawkins, of Tiffin, Ohio, who is manager of the Brickner & Schieck Glass Company, of that city; Mary Margaret was the wife of Edward Chase, and her death occurred February 24, 1893; William Clay is Superintendent and manager of the Brickner Woolen Mills Company, of Sheboygan Falls; and Lillah Isabella, the youngest of the family, resides with her parents.

In politics, Mr. Brickner is a Democrat. During the war he was elected Treasurer of the town of Lyndon, and later was President of the Village Board of Sheboygan Falls. In 1888 he was elected Representative to Congress from the Fifth Wisconsin District; was re-elected in 1890, and again in 1892, being the present incumbent, and serving his third term. In the last Congress he was Chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Treasury Department, and a member of the Committee on Inter-State and Foreign Commerce. He is Chairman of the sub-committee of the last-named committee, called the "Committee in Light-House and Life-Saving Service."

Mr. Brickner and wife are members of the Catholic Church. The record of the lives of successful men who have sprung from humble origin, and by their own efforts, unaided, have won prominence, must serve to encourage the young and ambitious to strive on, hopeful of success. As shown in this brief sketch, our subject is essentially a self-made man. The possessor of good principles, a manly independence, good natural ability and indomitable energy, he applied himself with zeal and perseverance to whatever he undertook, and success has crowned his efforts in a marked degree. His course as a business man has been distinguished by a conservative spirit of enterprise, strict integrity, and the application of correct business principles. In his official career in Congress, he has proved an active and useful member, showing an earnest desire for sound and healthful legislation, rather than the promotion of partisan policy. Among the substantial benefits he as secured for the people of Sheboygan County, are two large appropriations--one for the erection of a fine postoffice and custom house at Sheboygan, and the other for the extension of the harbor at the same place."
*********************
His photo can be seen at:
http://www.sheboyganhistory.com/images/bricknerpic.jpg
*******************
George was my first cousin, 4x removed.
*******************
His daughter, Georgina, and her husband were living in Marion, Indiana by 1920 census and still there in 1942, then I loose track of them.
*******************
My question is:
Does anyone know "Where" George's glass plant was in Tiffin, such as an address? I would like to go there and take a photograph. Would it have been where "Tiffin Glass" ended up being? Maybe the Georgina sold the Brickner plant to them and they named it Tiffin Glass?

Does anyone know if an Agricultural Census exists for Ohio for the year 1850?? Also, was a mid-decade, or state census ever done for Ohio? I'm looking for my gg-grandpa, Anton Bogner, who bought land in Thompson Twp. in Sept. of 1843. He and his family arrived in NY 29May 1843 from LeHavre, France, and I assume, traveled directly to Ohio. I have to wonder how/why he picked Ohio, relatives maybe?? There is a mystery surrounding his arrival there in Thompson Twp., as to whether his wife, Regina, gave birth to a son, and both died shortly after arriving in Seneca Co.....so many questions I have !!!

Hope someone can direct me!
Thanks!
Joyce

I am a descendent of Captain George Washington Culver born approximately 1823 near Sycamore Ohio. At that time Sycamore was part of Seneca Co as Wyandot Co was not formed until 1845. I have hit a brick wall concerning GW's parents. Does anyone know where birth records are kept for this early? THe Health Dept and other vital records offices only go back to the 1850's. I have also been trying to find an obituary for him. He died in the Civil War in either 1964 or 1867 (records confict) and was buried near Sycamore in Oct 1867. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you.

Can anyone tell me where I might look for Naturalization records from the early 1840's ? In Sept. 1843 my ANTOINE / ANTON BOGNER bought land in Thompson Twp. Am I correct in assuming that he had to have lived on the land for 5 yrs before being able to apply for citizenship?? I have been unable to determine exactly when he arrived in the States, and Seneca County, so I'm hoping that finding some Naturalization records might help me out!!

Any suggestions? and thank you!
Joyce Bogner-VanderVere

Becki Pachasa wrote to me today about an entry she found on page 618 of the History of Seneca County..
"Oak Grove Cemetery Association, of Loudon Township, was organized June 13, 1857, with John M. Sheller, president; B. E. Stephens, clerk: R. M. Ranney, Thomas Foughty, Nathan Wade, D. S. Rumple and Perry Chance, trustees."
She suggests that possibly here they speak of the cemetery I have listed online as "Loudon Cemetery."
Can anyone help with this?
There is no "Oak Grove" listed for Seneca county in the "Ohio Cemetery" book published in 2003

SPITLER - need verification of info for DAR membership

I'm hoping someone can help me out there. I decided to join the DAR and I know that I have an ancestor named Jacob SPITLER (1749-1829), who fought in the Revolutionary War from Virginia. He's buried in Fairfield County, OH. From what I understand there is even a DAR marker on his grave, which means he is officially recognized as being a Revolutionary War veteran.

After the family had moved from Virginia to Fairfield County, Ohio, they then moved to Seneca County. That's where I was born. But there are few SPITLERS left in Seneca County as far as I know.

The problem is this. I have only been able to get birth and death certificats for my parents, nothing further back, no family Bibles have turned up, etc. I have Arlie Spitler's genealogy of the SPITLER family, but I doubt if that will be enough. I'm not sure census records will be either, because the DAR has become more rigorous in recent years in what evidence concerning the "patriot" and the family genealogy it accepts from prospective members.

I'm sure there must be someone from Seneca County who has joined the DAR based on Jacob SPITLER's record and perhaps they even have some of the same ancestors further down. I have sent an email to the DAR in Seneca County, but have heard nothing back. It would surely help me if there was someone out there who had the required information and would be willing to help me out.

I am not living in Ohio at present. I am quite a distance away, so at this point I cannot come there, but I really need some help on this situation.

My lineage is this:

John SPITLER ( -1752), Jacob SPITLER (1749-1829), Jacob SPITLER (1784-1865), Martin SPITLER (1824-1904), Fremont Dayton SPITLER (1858-1938), Fred Sherwood SPITLER (1891-1960), and myself

Looking forward to some replies,
Betsy SPITLER Phillips
Backus, Bakeis, Bakies, etc.

My ancestors include the following spellings of the name BACKUS, BACKES, BAKES, BAKIES and BAKEIS (and at least once BARKAS).

The family originated in Belgium. Before 1756 Nicolas BACKES married Elizabeth GERARDI.

Their son Nicolas BACKES was born about 1756 possibly in Attert, Belgium, married Marie Josephine DABFONTAINE in 1783. He died in 1791 in Vance, Belgium. They had 6 children: Jean Francois, Henri Nicolas, Andre Auguste, Jean Pierre, Dominique, and Marie Seraphine.

Andre Auguste BAKIES, BAKES, BACKES was born in Vance in 1786, married Marie Madeline Sosson. emigrated to Seneca County, Ohio and died in 1858. He is buried in Frenchtown, St. Nicholas Cemetery. They had 14 children.

At least two sons also moved to Seneca County Ohio: Nicolas "Joseph" BAKIES, BAKES, He was born in Vance in 1820, married Mary Jane JENNING (GENIN) in 1845 in Seneca County. He died in 1885. He is also buried in St. Nicholas Cemetery. They had eleven children. Some spelled their name BAKIES and others BAKEIS

The other son, Pierre Joseph "Peter" BACKUS was born in Vance in 1813, married Catherine Josephine DABFONTAINE (1813-1853). Upon her death he took their 4 young children and emigrated to Seneca County, Ohio. The children were

Augustus (1836- bef 1910), Nicholas, Victor and Josephine. Nicholas BACKUS born in 1840 in Vance, married Ellen Mary FECHER in Tiffin Ohio. He died in 1914 in Cleveland, Ohio. They had 9 children including my grandfather Henry Francis BACKUS (1886-1973). All of the descendants of Peter spelled the name BACKUS. Josephine (1850-1931) married Blasius Crist. Victor (1845-1925) married Mary Borer and he is buried in St. John's in Delphos, Ohio.

There (in Seneca County) Peter married Susan BOUQUET, NEPPER and together they had a daughter, Catherine Backus Kelbley (1858-1943). Peter died in 1888 and is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery in Seneca County with the name spelled BAKUS.

Would love to hear from anyone with possible connections.

Cathy Backus McDade
cmcdade1@verizon.net

I was wondering if anyone in Seneca County, in the area of Tiffin specifically, knew anything about the Feight family. I found them in 1860 as Feth, 1870 as Faith, 1880 as Fate, and I know the sons that came to Kansas spelled their name Feight. It could have been originally spelled Feith. Alexander and Catharine were the parents, born in Bavaria, as was the oldest son Thomas. There was also John, Alexander, Lawrence, Mary, Joseph, Frank, Lee and Catharine. Any info anybody has would be greatly appreciated.

MOMPHER, POW Korean War, Seneca County

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Seneca County Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: David Page Mompher
Born: Sept. 28, 1928
Date of loss: Captured (POW) July 19, 1950

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from Seneca County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
(I know there were
quite a few of them, 1824-1845)

3. directions to wherever it is I need
to go to see these records?

4. Place for boys age eleven & thirteen to
play and their mother to relax while
I do this?

MUCH appreciated, thanks!

Hello
Would anyone know anything about St. Michaels Church that was located in Thompson Township? We are trying to find the church marriage record for Joseph Frederick and Josephine Shoe performed by John Wittmer. There was suppose to have been a Father John Wittmer. CPPS as a priest at St. Michaels in the 1850's. We are wondering if he might have traveled to Huron County to perform marriages and if so which church that would have been.

Any help or reference will be appreciated.

Marj

George Schock

George Schock, son of John and Elizabeth Schock, was born in Washington township, Union county, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1819. He remained under the paternal roof until 1840, when he removed with his parents to Thompson township, Seneca county, Ohio, where he worked first for his father at one hundred and fifteen dollars a year. He learned the carpenter and joiner trade, at which he worked for about three years

On the 20th day of September 1945, he married Lucy Ann Wehr, a native of Lehigh county, Pennsylvania. They reared a family of nine children, namely:

Benjamin F., born January 10, 1847.

John, born September 25, 1849.

Joel, born October 29, 1851.

Polly, born October 28, 1853.

Eli, born May 14, 1856.

Sarah, born June 10, 1858.

Hetty A., born March 7, 1861

Lydia A., born July 2, 1863; and

Emma A., born November 13, 1867.

Mr. Schock has been mostly engaged in farming, although he has devoted a considerable portion of his time to the manufacture of sorghum, and to the raising of poultry. In 1871 he removed to Michigan and purchased his present fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Lockport township, which he keeps in an excellent state of cultivation in addition to attending his other business.

He is at present, treasurer of Grange No. 178, and also treasurer of Pomona Grange, No. 4, of St. Joseph county. In politics he is a Republican, thought he has recently affiliated with the Greenback party. In religion, he is a member of the German Reformed Church. For a late settler in his township no man enjoys more the confidence and esteem of the people than does he of whom we write. A view of his residence and buildings can be seen elsewhere in this work.

From: History of St. Joseph County Michigan 1827-1877. Description of its scenery, palatial residences, public buildings and important manufacturers. Philadelphia L.H. Everts & Co. 716 Filbert Street, 1877.

Hi:

I am trying to locate several family members that I believe lived in Cass Twp and could possibly have obits in the Fostoria area newspapers.

I am trying to find:

John Fisher. Born May 1831. Married Elizabeth. They had two children Marsina B born about 1853 and Morris born about 1860.

Friederike Magdalena Fisher. Born Feburary 1837.

Wilhelmine Magdalena (Fisher) Beach/Beech. Born November 1838. Died before 1884. I am trying to find both Wilhelmine's and her husbands obit but I do not know her husband's first name.

John Theodore Brookman and Caroline (Fisher)Brookman, his wife. She died February 1920 and he died April 1927.

I would appreciate any help on the above families.

Thank you so much...Mary Jo
