Zink, Ingles Inquiry

I have the 1840 census of Gallia Co with a John Zink listed. In 1850, Gallia Co., Perry Twp is a widowed, Sr. John Zink, born in VA, with 3 children, James Madison, Sarah and William Zink.

Right next door is John Zink Jr., born in VA, married to Elizabeth Ingles, also born in VA, with two children, James and William M. (listed here as what appears to be Thomas??).

The Senior John was born about 1792 and John Jr. was born about 1822.

I have information on Wm. M. Zink, including his death certificate, which lists his parents and verifies they were born in VA.

I also know that James Madison Zink, son of John Zink Sr., married and moved to Indiana.

I was hoping that someone would have additional information about these families. If you can assist, I would love to hear from you.
I am looking for any male Cole who can trace his ancestry back to Henry and Sarah Rusco Cole of Connecticut. I am interested in finding a Cole who might be interested in taking a DNA test (for genealogy purposes only). Many of Henry and Sarah Cole's descendants settled in the Portsmouth area of Scioto County. I hope there are still some around.
Thanks...
Bill Cole

Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Looking for information and details pertaining to the Portsmouth and Springville Ferry operating across the Ohio River between Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio and Springville, Greenup County, Kentucky. In 1860 the ferry was owned and operated by Alexander K. Thompson and his wife Nancy D. (Bagby) Thompson and their son, Robert B. Thompson. In 1864, they sold the ferry operation to John McAllister and his wife, Catherine S. (Bagby) McAllister, a niece of Nancy (Bagby) Thompson.

Other than these simple facts, I know little else about the ferry. Would like to know the years of operation, other owners, and any other facts.
The online 1850 Census Index lists a J.Fassler in Green Township, page 300, family # 295.

I am tracking my Faessler Ancestors who came to Scioto County about 1850. The name now has become Fessler but at that time Faessler would be written Fässler and easily mistaken as Fassler.

This individual could be Johan Michael Faessler, who in 1851, married Maria Walter.

I would appreciate it if some one would check the Census and give me details of the listing.

Lee Fessler

My ancestors from the Scherzheim / Lichtenau area of Baden came to, stayed for a while or passed through Portsmouth in the time period 1848-1865.

Since most of them moved on to Illinois, I wonder what attracted them to Portsmouth? One reason might be a community of friends or relatives from the old coutry. Are there any on line data or references that would shed light on my question?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Lee Fessler

Death records for Charles & Catharine Harter Heid

I know an official death record is probably out of the question for this couple, but I just need something to help me find where they were living in Germany. Charles Heid was b. in 1826 in Baden, according to the 1880 census & Catharine Harter Heid was b. in 1831, also in Baden. Charles last appeared in a census in 1880. Catharine was found in 1900, still living in Clay Twp., Scioto Co. with daughter Grace or Gracia. In 1910, she & daughter Theresa were living in Portsmouth, Wayne Twp. She was shown as 81 years.

In the Ohio Death Records beginning in 1913, I found a Catheri Heid living until 1918 & dying in Montgomery Co.

Are there Catholic church records in Clay Twp., Scioto County & is there anyway to contact someone to do a search of these records?

I'm at a brick wall on this family until I can learn where they came from in Germany, besides Baden.

Cyndy Thompson

I'm not sure of the exact years, I think it is something like 1908-1953, but you can order copies of Ohio death certificates from the Akron Public Library. You can place a maximum of two requests per month, but each request can be for 1-5 death certificates. They ask for as much info as you have for the person (ie., death date, county of death, certificate number), then they will send you the certificates and an invoice. Their charge is $1 for processing and 5 cents each for the copies. So, for 5 death certificates, your charge is only $1.25. You can't beat that!!! Requests can be emailed to speccollections@akronlibrary.org. It normally takes 3-5 weeks to get your death certificates in the mail.

Some site about Bikes and Jedi Warriors. Tried typing the address, then googled it. Still goes to the wrong site. Any suggestions?
Betsy

I was wondering if anyone knows of an area called Buckhorn in Scioto County? I think it may have been near Jackson County and there was possibly a school called Buckhorn as well?

From an unknown newspaper source found among Frances Eldridge-Albertson-Conkel's papers. Lucretia's daughter, Emma was married to Harrison Albertson, these are the parents of Henry Lee Albertson, Frances' first husband. Estimated Death year is 1953. Would like to know if anyone has an exact death date for her. I have a funeral book from Piatt Funeral Home, 926 Ninth Street, Portsmouth, Ohio with a death date of May 6, 1953, without the deceased's name, I believe it is for Lucretia because of who is listed under family and friends. Among the names are: John Henry Loizer (Lozier?)-son, Emma Collins-daughter, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Lozier, Patricia Ann Lozier, Robert P. Lozier, Martha Collins, Rose Collins, Mr. & Mrs. George Collins and Crete Holmes and 6 pages of other names too numerous to list here. I would like to know how the others listed above are related to Lucretia and the names of her three husbands and other family members who preceded her in death. Thank you.

Mrs. Lucretia Prater
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Saturday for Mrs. Lucretia Prater, 88,
of 120 Second St., who died at 4 p.m.
Wednesday at Portsmouth General
Hospital.
Mrs. Prater was born March 12, 1865,
in Greenup County, Ky., a daughter of
Alexander and Jane Frances Holmes.
She was a member of the Pentecostal
Church of Christ at Highland Bend.
Surviving are a son, John H. Lozier,
Huntington; a daughter, Mrs. Emma
Collins 120 Second St.; two grandsons,
seven great-grandchildren; and a great-
great-grandchild.
Mrs. Prater was preceded in death by
her first and second husbands, two sons,
two daughters, two sisters, a brother and
a grandson.
Funeral services will be held at the Pentecostal
Church of Christ of Highland Bend. Rev. Marion
Stiltner will officiate.

William Craig - 1820 Census Bloom, Scioto County

Does anyone know the names of William Craig's children? I find him in Bloom, Scioto County in 1820. After that I can not find him. I am looking for a connection to Sarah Craig, born about 1805 in Ohio, who I think may be his daughter. She married Joshua Bennett about 1824. I know of three children that she had, Mathias, James, and Fanny.

Looking for more info for Clark West and Sarah Jane Hood. They were married in Scioto County 17 May 1843. They may been in Vernon TWP. in 1850. Can't tell if it is CLARK or CHARLES West on the census, but the 3 children listed, Mary A., William, and George W. seem to be right for the time period. I was hoping someone would be so kind to lookup for parents listed. They are my brick wall.

Thanks

We'd like to have it right in Portsmouth, not at the State park outside of town.

Have you held a reunion in Portsmouth, and would you recommend using the same location again? A certain church, a lodge hall, etc?

Place names, phone numbers, names of contact persons would be greatly appreciated!
Old St. Mary Cemetery, Portsmouth and plat map availability

I know back in the 1970s, there was a list of people published who were buried at the Old St. Mary Cemetery and those who had headstones. My great-great grandmother was on the list. Mary Geis, wife of Sebastian. Are these headstones still there and can someone tell me where this cemetery is located?

I recently found the Township and Section where the Geis farm was located in the 1850s to 1890s. Where can I get the plat map? It was described as 2 miles NE of Portsmouth on the graveyard road.
I found this info in the Portsmouth Historical Newspaper on Ancestry.
Thanks for any and all help.

Salladay Family

I am trying to find out more about the Salladay or
Sallade Family. They were apparently Swiss. Phillip
Sallade was married to Sarah Flick. His son, George,
married Phoebe Chaffin. George and Phoebe chaffin's
daughter, Melissa Salladay married Amaziah Bacus. I
believe that Phillip Salladay served in the Rev.War, as
he is listed in the DAR Patriot Index. Can anyone tell
me the name of Phillip's parents and where they came
from. Incidently, Phoebe Chaffin, who was married to
George Salladay, is a direct descendant of Giles Corey
who was pressed to death in the Salem Witchcraft Trials
of 1692.
Elizabeth Reeves Bacus bacus@gte.net

Mitchell-Morrison Cemetery - still visible?

Does anyone know if the Mitchell-Morrison Cemetery is still visible and not overgrown? Years ago I had heard that it was becoming overgrown and that many of the stones were broken. At the time, there was a group of people who were caring for certian cemeteries and were considering adopting this one.

I would love to visit some day and am interested in whether or not the graves and stones are still viewable.

Does anyone live near the cemetery, and willing to take a picture?

The location of the cemetery, about 20 years ago was: 1/4 mile up a hill off State Route 52, on state owned land across from the Selby Farm in Nile Twp. 6.7 miles past the Shawnee Golf Course and marina.

I would be grateful for any information regarding this cemetery.

Thank you!

Tami
Washington State

Has anyone been able to speak with the person that is in charge of this cemetary? A few years ago I was given a number by scioto burial park on who to talk to and basically I called and left messages or spoke to someone else and never had any calls returned. I'm planning a trip to Ohio this summer and I want to have as much info before I go. At this cemetary I have a Elam Farmer buried there. I want to find out if any of his children and wife are there esp my ancestor William S. Farmer. thanks Cristina

can someone help me get an obituary for Apr 25-28, 2006 ???

Jimmie Eugene Nunnelee born 28 Aug 1960 in Chicago, Cook Co IL - died 25 Apr 2006 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The death notice (not obituary) said he lived in South Webster, Scioto Co, Ohio but he could not have lived there very long as the SSDI still had his address of record as Pinellas Co, FLA.
Jimmie never married and had no children.

Jimmie and I are Nunnelee cousins but I would like to find his half-siblings by his mother, Mary Sue [Caylor]'s other marriage(s); when she died her married name was Gabriel.

Perhaps his half-siblings, the funeral home that made his arrangements, or some other clue might be in his obituary...
I'm thinking he must have had family in South Webster ???

Any help in finding out IF he had an obituary will be deeply, deeply appreciated.
Kathye Upham

The following are taken from the above Colulmbus Citizen newspaper story, starting on Page 1.

Captions from pictures on front page:

"Della May Maynard, 9, young Portsmouth refugee, who brought her dog, Trixie, to Columbus by "hiding it under my coat from those railroad men."

"Mrs. Ruby Bell gets a lunch and her son, Charles, 3, gets some milk on arrival at the Masonic Temple here. While Charles gulps his milk, another young refugee watches the cameraman."

"Drinking water was a luxury in Portsmouth. On the train, Mrs. Esther Morris didn't wait for paper cups to be passed out, but drank from the lid of a box."

"These boys had a good time singing on the the train, because Robert Brown decided his guitar was more important to save than anything else. The other boys are Oscar McGraw on the arm of the seat, and Carl Pennington."

"First family to register here as refugee trains arrived, Mr. and Mrs. Walker Kidwell and four children. Mayor Gessman and Johnny Jones in background."

Page 2: "At Portsmouth: Threat of fire arose to plague authorities in thei beleaguered city today as floating storage tanks spread a film of gasoline over wide areas in teh heart of the residential district.

Strict ban on smoking and lighting of fires in the affected sections was ordered by City Manager Frank Sheehan as police, firemen and coast guards sought to anchor three large tanks which broke from their moorngs on the outskirts of the city."

"Refugees: 18 Here Taken to Hospitals for Treatment"
"By Arthur Robinson
From the nightmare of flood-stricken Portsmouth, the American Red Cross today had removed 546 persons to the comparative paradise of clean beds in a high and dry city with an ample flood supply.

They are 546 persons to whom pure water had become a luxury; baths and clean clothes a dream; adequate meals something they prayed for.

They are the first of the hard hit victimes of disaster-shaken Portsmouth to be evacuated in a gigantic plan to relieve that city of the burden of 5000 homeless floor sufferers.

Today they were being cared for in the warm auditoriums of the Masonic Temple and the Broad-St. Presbyterian Church.

Nineteen of the refugees were taken to hsoptials, Grant, Mt. Carmel and White Cross, to be treated for exposure, codls, influenza, cuts and bruises....."

...."Some had come from a Portsmouth school in which 175 had been jammed into one classroom- 16000 into a 10-room schoolhouse.

The train was to most of them a miracle of comfort and convenience. On short water rations (two horus a day) most of them had not been able to wash even their faces and hands. Most were thirsty for fresh, cold water.

Washroomson the trian were crowded. The ice water tanks ran dry before the train had rolled 30 miles.

They talked of their hardships, of what they had lost. To many of them, the loss meant everything they had. Others had hopes of salvaging something when the mad Scioto and Ohio rivers get over their rampage.

Mrs. Marm Brown, 80, saved only her pipe, on which she puffed rapidly but found little solace this morning.

"Never been in a flood before in all my life," she said. "Alwlays lived off and on in Portsmouth and in the country. Just moved to Portsmouth again before Christmas. Wish I'd stayed in the country. My house is turned over by the flood, and I know there's nothing left."

Mr. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Biggs said they moved thier belongings three times to the homes of freinds on higher ground- "but still we lost everything, because Old Man River kept right on coming up."

Mrs. Blanche Coleman and her son at first did not believe the predictions of high waters.

"We stayed in our home and moved everthing upstairs," Mrs. Coleman said. "But when a boat used our front porch for dock, we stepped out the upstairs window, walked across the porch roof, and got into the boat. Only the tiptop of our house is abouve the water now."

Mrs. Sarah Justice and her grown son, Henry, have nothing to go back to.

"Our home's been washed away," they said.

Mrs. Justice was at home alone when the water started coming up.

"I waded away from the house with water up to my waist," she said. "Henry waded home from work with water up to his chest and I wasn't there. We didn't find each other for four days. I didn't know how he was, and he didn't know about me. But we're together again now, thank God."

On the day the water came up, Vernon Payton was with other WPA workers, piling sandbags on top the flood wall. Finishing work, he went home- and found water on his parlor floor.

"Don't worry about anything but the family," he shouted to his 27-year-old wife. Mr. Payton is 32.

"We just grabbed the six kids and a handful of bedding and ran for it," he related. "And all my wife and I have got now is our kids."

The "kids" range from Billy, 9, to Jerry Lee, two months.

With memories like these fresh in their minds, the unpleasantness of their crowded school roooms in Portsmouth and only a dismal prospect for the future, the 546 came to the Columbus train like beatne people, as if to say: "What next?"

Their miery was greater because many were suffering the after-nausea of anti-typhoid serum injections. One doctor and three nurses were on the train with 28 special deputies to help the victims. The physician and nurses had many callers."

"No one is really ill," said Dr. Albert L. Berndt, whose own office is buried under water. "They are all sick at heart. Their nerves are gone. They think I can do something for them."

But medicine is not made that cures sick hearts. No serum has been found that restores confridence..."

I had Anna Foster m William Farney, but now it appears that it is Elizabeth. I have no documentation for Anna.

In 1830, Kanawha Co., VA, William Farney is listed right after Thomas Foster, who I show as Anna's father.

In 1840, Kanawha Co., Elizabeth Farney is listed as head of household, right after Noah Foster, who would be Anna's brother. Makes me wonder if Anna and Elizabeth are actually the same person.

In 1850, Elizabeth Roe is listed in Sciotoville, Scioto Co., OH. She is once again H of HH. Children are listed as, Marcus Farney, Jane, Amanda and Van Buren Farney and Vernon Roe.

The last time I find Elizabeth is 1860, Porter Twp, Scioto Co. Van Buren Farney is hh, then Elizabeth and Vernon Roe.

I'm wondering if anyone can help with documentation, family stories, etc?

Thanks,
Chuck

POW/MIA Korean War, Scioto Co. MERSHON

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Scioto County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: DAVID FRANKLIN MERSHON
Born: October 5, 1930. Caucasion
Date of loss: July 16, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from *** County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Looking for more info on Grace GILMORE (b.1893), daughter of Robert Lee GILMORE (1861-1907) and Mary Gertrude POLLOCK (1866-1918) of Portsmouth, OH.

Grace GILMORE married Charles HUSTON in 1912, "next door" in Lawrence Co., OH. In about 1937, she was going by the name of Grace GILMORE again.

Grace GILMORE grew up in Portsmouth, OH, and lived in that area during her marriages.

questions....
What was her 2nd husband's name?
What were her children's names?
When and where did she die?

Please contact me at my address below. I have a photo of her and one of her children. Also, I have lots of info about the GILMORE family. Thanks for your help!

Sandy Gilmore
TracingMyRoots@hotmail.com
Hello, I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather Robert G Anderson born about 1876 KY. Migrated to Scioto Co. Ohio and married Martha Yates. Children:

Thomas J Anderson born Sept 1902 died 1951 Indiana. Married Nettie Lee and had children Thomas and Mary Lou ( I am descended from Mary Lou)

Homer Anderson born 1904 died ? He was listed as living in FT. Wayne IN, in brother Thomas’s obituary.

Agnes Anderson (married unknown Carr) was born about 1907. And died?

Marjorie Louise Anderson (married unknown Jarvis) born Nov 12, 1912 died November 01, 1995 Scioto, Portsmouth Ohio. Would love to find a child or grandchild of Marjorie since she continued to live in Scioto County.

Margaret Anderson born February 1915, mother Martha died February 28, 1915 from an infection she developed after the birth of Margaret.

Robert and Martha lived in Scioto Co. until Martha's death in 1915. I can not find Robert, Thomas, Homer. Margaret or Marjorie in 1920 census, but found Agnes living with Martha’s mother Elizabeth and brother Thomas Yates in Lawrence Co. This has become my mystery.

In 1930 Robert was living with Thomas J and wife Nettie (my Grandparents). Robert was not listed as living in Thomas J's obit.

I would love to communicate with those related to Homer, Agnes, Margaret or Marjorie and any information would be greatly appreciated

Thank you!
Evergreen Cemetery in Scioto County?

In the Portsmouth Times from July 1871 it says the following:

Evergreen Cemetery
Sexton's Report of Burials for June, 1871
5th - Daniel Westwood, aged eighty-one years, two months and three days; heart disease and dropsy.

Daniel Westwood lived in Sciotoville when he died. Has anyone ever heard of an Evergreen Cemetery in Scioto County?
1894 - Unsolved Murder of Edward Perry

In an article recently discovered at Ancestry.com printed in the Portsmouth Times (Portsmouth, Ohio) on Saturday October 27, 1894 entitled "CAUGHT" gives a vivid description and apparent motive for the Murder of Edward Perry and the arrest of 4 suspects; John W. Walker, Thaddeus Bennett, William Rice and William Soards all from Greenup County, Kentucky. The apparent motive of the two brother-in-laws Bennett/Rice (both married to Walker sisters)to murder Ed Perry was jeleousy. According to the article he was quite the womman's man. Courting Rices wife before they were married and attempting to seduce Bennett's wife, which eventually ended in divorce.

In the last part of the article it states that they were all released for lack of hard evidence.

Firstly, I find this most intriguing due to the simple fact that three of these men namely Walker, Bennett and Rice are all close family ancestors. Secondly, because I have not been able to find out if anyone was ever convicted of the crime.

I came accross two other articles, One dated November 17, 1894 that actually states that a Mr. William Courtright, the postmaster at Springville Ky gave a statement to the Portsmouth Times indicating that a relative of Thaddeus Bennett was confident that Thaddeus was to confess to knowing more information of the disaperence of Ed Perry but said he had nothing to do with the murder and that he only helped remove the body from the woods where it was hiden and attached a large stone to it and threw it into the Mill pond. He then goes on to say that Thaddeus Bennett was going to incriminate a certain William Secrest, son of Dr. Secrest of Springville. Indicating he was murdered in order to keep him quite about an arson incident where Wm. Secrest lit fire to his home in order to get the insurance money.

The second article dated Nov 29, 1894 written by the editor of the Portsmouth times indicated that recent murders in Greenup County had influenced many people with evidence to keep quite for fear of retaliation and he goes on to say with good reason. In so many words he sums up by saying that he hoped that those that perpertrated the murder would be eventually brought to justice and finishes with this poem:
"Time at last sets all things even"
and if we but watch the hour
There never yet was human power,
which could evade if unforgiven
The patient search and vigil long
of him that treasures up a wrong."

Any information on this event or the people involved would be much appreciated. And thanks.
My g-grandfather, Robert Lee GILMORE, was killed in a train wreck, near Rardon, OH, on August 26, 1907. I have several newspaper articles from 1907 about this train wreck.

Does anyone know if there will be some type of memorial service this month, or an article in the local newspaper, or whatever, to remember those railroad men who died in that train crash 100 years ago? If so, I'd like to know about it. Thanks for your help!

Sandy Gilmore
TracingMyRoots@hotmail.com
