My ancestors from the Scherzheim / Lichtenau area of Baden came to, stayed for a while or passed through Portsmouth in the time period 1848-1865.

Since most of them moved on to Illinois, I wonder what attracted them to Portsmouth? One reason might be a community of friends or relatives from the old coutry. Are there any on line data or references that would shed light on my question?
