Update: Old Ross Co. Schools

I have just finished my overhaul of the Ross County Schools page on my website.

http://www.oldohioschools.com/ross_county.htm

I am still missing quite a few pictures of some of the old schools as well as some dates and locations. Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Can anyone help me or tell me who to contact about information on a man killing someone with a pitchfork. This man was later aquitted of the murder. I have two names(the man who done the killing) as possibilities. Sebastian Romershausen or Berhardt/Robert Schlegelmilch. This supposedly happened between 1849 and 1852 in Ross County, Ohio. The story has been passed down in my family but no one has been able to verify it. If you could just supply me with an address of someone to contact, that would help.

I am trying to find a date of death & place of burial for Maria/Mary KNOCH. We don't have a birth record for Maria but information in our family Bible appears to give her date of birth as January or July 1823. We have been unable to determine the correct spelling of her maiden name, but it may not help if we did as her name is spelled differently on every document we find. Her marriage record shows "Goltatne", her son's death certificate lists her as "Goldney" and her daughter's death cert says "Goltaire" or "Galtaire." Maria married Harmon/Herman KNOCH in Ross Co, OH in 1840. They are together in the Ohio census records until after Harmon's death in 1866. Mary married William A Doyle in 1867 and is found with him in the 1870 census in Huntington Twp, Ross co. along with two of her daughters, Phoebe & Louisa. In 1880, Maria/Mary is living with her daughter Phoebe who has married John WEATHERSPOON. They are in Clinton co, Ohio, and Maria is listed as "Mary KNOCH", mother-in-law to John. I do not find her in the 1900 census of Ohio. If you have a connection to this family, or advice for me regarding this search, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Surnames connected with Harmon & Maria's children are: COX, FRESHOUR, HILLMAN, PURDUM, REASTER/REESTER/REISTER, ROBINSON, ROONEY, WETHERSPOON/WEATHERSPOON
Lemon/Lemmon/Lemen

I am desperate to find the parents of Andrew Lemon/Lemmon/Lemen born 1810 in Ohio, probably Ross County. Andrew was married to Jane Bryant/Brian/Briant September 1835 in Ross Co. Andrew and Jane are noted as heirs to John Bryant, Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH. Andrew and Jane sold land 1836 to a possible relative of Jane's, Edward Young of Ross Co.
There is a Joseph Lemon listed on the 1806 tax list for Ross Co., and later there is a will for a Joseph Lemon supposedly on file in Chillicothe, Ross Co. I suspect this Joseph is the father or at least a relative.
Andrew had a brother Joseph born 1808 in Ohio who married an Elizabeth Carmean in 1833 also in Ross. Before the 1840 census both Andrew and Joseph are in Madison Co., IN, living next to each other. Another possible brother is Thomas who married in 1830 Margaret Hann in Ross Co. All three--Andrew, Joseph, and Thomas--were spelling their name Lemmon. Another possible brother could be the John Lemons who died in 1834 at age 22 in Ross County. He is listed for the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Buckskin Twp. Also at the Mt. Pleasant is a Joseph son of an Isaac and Mary Lemons.
Andrew's first son was named John, and this makes me suspect that he may have been related to the John Lemon who is shown as a first land owner in Ohio, August 24, 1801.
I would think with birth dates as early as 1810 and 1808 for Ross County, the parents of Andrew and Joseph would have to have been among the early settlers, but I can't find any Lemon/Lemons/Lemmon/Lemen first families discussed for the Chillicothe-Ross County area on any genealogy websites. Somebody has to know something about this group.

Thank you for any connections.
Melody

I am searching for information on John Elliott and his family who are found in Ross County, Ohio in 1830 census. Esther, his wife, appears in 1850 and 1860 census in Pike County, Illinois. According to Pike County, IL records there were ten children. I would be interested in knowing if there are any probate or land records for John in Ross County, Ohio. Thank you.

LEONARD - MENDENHALL research help, please

There is an entry for a Ross Co. marriage of William LEONARD to Elizabeth MENDENHALL, 17 Jul 1842. I need to find the parents and sibs of William and there are two families of interest in Ross Co. in 1840: 1) William LEONARD in Concord, a "couple" age 20-30 with 3 girls under five years of age and 2) Thomas LEONARD, a "couple" age 60-70 plus five younger people - perhaps this was William's family but how can I determine that?

There were three MENDENHALL families in Liberty, Ross Co., including Amos, father of Elizabeth (MENDENHALL) LEONARD.

I would be glad for help or ideas about researching this LEONARD family.

Researching the following families of Highland Co. and Ross Co., Ohio of the early 1800's who intermarried. They came mostly from Penn. and SC. The families are William and Margaret ROSS GARRETT of Abbeville, SC, Abraham and Sarah STUART DEAN of Cumberland Co/Juniata Co., PA. Their children married into the STRAIN, PATTERSON, DEAN, ANDERSON, BAIRD, GARRETT, DICKEY, TAYLOR, SCROGGS SIMPSON and WILSON families of Ohio. Margaret ROSS is the daughter of William and Martha ELLIS ROSS who came from N. IRE. to Abbeville, SC in 1767 aboard "The Earl of Hillsborough". Sarah STUART is the daughter of William and Elizabeth WILSON STUART. Her father came to PA from Newry, N. IRE with his family in 1752 aboard the "Happy Return". Elizabeth WILSON's parentage is unknown, though it is known that she was born near Philadelphia, PA. William GARRETT's widowed mother, Rebecca, married James MCCONNEL of Abbeville, SC Their daughter, Jane, married Job COMBS of the Highland Co./Ross Co. area. Their children eventually lived in Allen Co. and Auglaize Co., OH Any information appreciated.

I am guessing my ancestor had family connections in Hardy Co., VA since he m. Mary Elizabeth (Isabella) Newland probably of Frederick Co., VA about 1818 prior to the move to OH.

Offutt Family in Ross County, OH

Seeking information on the Offutt Family in Ross County, OH. In the 1860 Federal Census of Union is listed the family of John E. Offutt, which included his wife Eliza (Pease), sons Charles, Henry and Phillip as well as daughter Deborah. According to the 1860/1880Census as well as OH Death Certificate information for John's son Phillip M., John E. Offutt was born in OHIO. Daughter Deborah Offutt's Ohio Death Certificate stated that John Offutt was born in Martha's Vineyard but this may actually refer to her mother Eliza, as in the 1880 OH Fed Census for Clermont Cty Eliza's place of birth is listed as Mass. So far I have been unable to locate the family in the 1870 OH Census. Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

The Parents of Susan/Susanna Salts

I am having problems researching the parents of Susanna Salts, b. 1815 in Ohio. Supposed parents are William Salts (b. 1803 in Virginia) and Sarah UNKNOWN (b. 1793 in Virginia). Susan wed in 1837 in Jackson County, Ohio to husband, (I'm sure), Stewart or Steward Thompson (b. 1805 in Ohio). Their children were born in Ross County, Ohio. They then moved to Illinois between 1850 and 1853.

Problems:
You can see William probably was too young to father Susanna. Also, some family trees list Sarah as being William's sister. Possible, I suppose. It keeps things interesting enough.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Steve Royce
I'm hoping to find information on James Tallman b est 1840-1850, unknown place of birth.

James and Amanda's son Charles is listed in the Ross Co. birth records as being born in Chillicothe, 10 July 1878. (His WWI draft registration card shows 11, July 1878) By the 1880 census Amanda was living in Pickaway Co. with son Charles and is listed as widowed/divorced.

I have been able to find no record or hint of infromation for James other than this mention on the birth record for Charles.

Any scrap of information would be most welcome.

I am asking for any information on the Joseph Lemon family living from 1799-1809 in Concord Twp., Ross Co., OH.

Joseph Lemon/Lemmon married Elizabeth McCartney, daughter of Rev. War veteran James McCartney, in 1799 in Ross Co., OH. The James McCartney family lived in Westmoreland Co., PA, before moving to the Bourbon Co., KY, area in 1793. In 1804, James moved to Concord Twp., Ross Co., OH, living near his daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law Joseph Lemon. Joseph and Elizabeth had sons Andrew, b. c. 1809, Joseph, b.c. 1808, Thomas, and James. Joseph, the father, died around 1809, Ross Co. and supposedly had a will at Chillicothe. I have seen other people's posts dating his death as around 1806, but I have found my Joseph on the Ross Co. tax list for 1807 and 1808. His will was probated 1809, and his widow Elizabeth is shown has head of the house on the 1810 tax list. There are not two Joseph Lemons (last name spelled in any way)on official records for Ross Co. in that time period. My ancestor is Joseph's son Andrew who married Jane Bryant/Bryan/Brian, daughter of John Bryant, in 1835 in Ross Co.

At this point, I am working under the theory that my Joseph was himself from Westmoreland Co., PA, since he married into a family from that same location and the James Lemon, Sr., family was in Westmoreland Co for a time. Additionally Elizabeth McCartney's mother was Mary "Mollie" Jamison. Mary's parents lived in Franklin Co., PA, and died on a trip to see their other adult children living in Westmoreland Co. Some of these Jamison adult children moved into the surrounding area of Concord Twp., Ross Co., OH, near the Joseph Lemon family and the James McCartneys. I think my Joseph may be the son of James/John Lemon, Sr., d.c. 1782, from Tyrone Co., Ireland, the brother of Robert, Thomas, John, James, Archie, etc., and the Rev. War veteran listed with same on other posts. On various records the family name is Lemon/Lemmon/Lamon/Lammon/Lemen. Widow Elizabeth "Betsy" Lemmon married James Lee in Ross Co., in 1818. She died in 1856 in Anderson, Madison Co., IN, where she migrated with and lived near her sons Andrew and Joseph.

Any information on the Lemon/Lemmon family in Ross Co., OH, in the late 1700s, early 1800s in Ross Co. will be apreciated. Or for that matter, any additional information, positive or negative, on the Joseph, son of James/John Lemon/Lemmon,Sr.,d.c. 1782 from Tyrone Co., Ireland.

A Joseph Lemon is listed as serving in the disasterous Sandusky/Crawford Expedition of 1782. If my Joseph and this one are the same, he, then, would have been familiar with the greater Ross County, OH, area.

Any information or connections will be most appreciated.
Best regards,
Melody Hull
Alexandria, IN

I"M in need of some information on the Dyer family

I'm doing some rearch on the Dyer family name and all I know is my great grand fathers name was C.W. Dyer which I think stands for Charles Walter Dyer. His wife's name was Flora Shipley which she is from pickaway county. I do not know where Charles is from. I do know they lived in auston which is around frankfort. What I'm looking for is where he was born .I know he was born in 1875 . I want to know where he was born and what his parents names are.I know he did not die in ross county but he is buried here. He died May 25 1925,and that is all I know. If anyone has any information I would appreciate it! Thanks Sherrry

I am hoping someone is researching the Byers family of Ross Co. Clement Byers and his wife Mary Woodrow moved to Ross Co. around 1920. Clement and his son Clyde ran a meat market and grocery on Eastern Avenue and later a coal yard on Eastern Avenue. Cyde married Tillie White. Clements daughter Lillian married Stanley Heskett, a local plumber and had children Mildred Heskett Freeman and Rosanne (Betty) Heskett Graves.

If anyone remembers this family please contact me. Any help would be very much appreciated.

The Diehlman I am searching is John Frederick Diehlman, spelled Dielman, in some records. DOB. June 9, 1843 DOD 16 July 1913 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio. His wife was Phillipine (last name possible Stoll or Stull) who died 14 June 1897. His declaration for citizenship states he was from Hesse. . Family stories indicate he probably immigrated about 1853 throught New York. I have death forward but am searching for Phillipine's last name, information about immigration, birthplace of both. They married and lived for a short time in Ross County near Chillicothe, Ohio, before moving to Portsmouth. I would appreciate any information you may have run across about this family.
Pickaway Co Clifton's With Ross Co Connections

This Clifton family was in Pickaway Co OH for at least 50 years. I am hoping someone may have information about them. I believe Margaret is the mother of these Cliftons. They were all born in Delaware where there is a will of Obediah Smith stating his daughter, Margaret Clifton's children.

Listed in the will are: Job,Benjamin,Charles,John,Judah, and Smith Clifton. Is this the Pickaway Co family? There is a Margaret Clifton age 100 in Pickaway Co OH. Who was her husband? Job Clifton married Ann VanBuskirk and Juda Clifton married John VanBuskirk, both in Ross Co before Pickaway was formed.

There must be some records for these folks as they lived there for so long. Perhaps cemetery records would tell some of the relationships. Any clues or help will be greatly appreciated.

I believe they were brothers, but cannot prove it. Frisby and Mahlon each had children named Frisby, Mahlon, and Samuel.

I'm looking for the obituary of a WWII veteran, Marion Mutschelknaus, who died while at the Chilicothe VA hospital.
He was buried (also born & raised) in Aberdeen Ohio (Brown County) at Charter Oak Cemetery. He was born in 1921, and died in 1992.

I'm looking for more firm dates of birth/death and for his siblings, they are my Grandma's cousins:
A brother from his Mother's first marriage (I wish I had a given & or surname).
A sister, Ann, from her Mom's 2nd marriage, full sibling of Marion's. I don't have her married name but know she married a Stanly, from Lexington, KY at the time.

Their mother was Clara Mutschelknaus (nee Wilson). I don't know the names of her husbands, I think the 2nd was also Marion. She was my Grandma's aunt.

Thanks so much!

Hello, I am looking for anyone researching the Joshua Clifton family of Yellow Bud/Clarksburg. He was reportedly married three times, to Elizabeth Kelso, Miranda Buskirk, and Mary McDaniel. He is probably the father of my ancestor, J. Douglas Clifton (born around 1861). I also have a newspaper clipping from the Portsmouth Times dated August 13, 1887 regardingthe deathbed confession of "old" Joshua Clifton of Yellow Bud, Ohio. He admitted to killing two men (Sam Osborn in 1861, and Mahlon Morris in 1864) and assisting in killing a third. Apparently and African-American man was convicted of murdering Osborn and did twenty years in the Ohio Penitentiary. Anyone have more info on this family or the murders? Thanks in advance!!!!

Aubrey Nelson
juniorrocks8@juno.com

I know that one of my NJ ancestors,Andrew Ten Eyck, was born in NJ but ran a tavern in Ross county,OH in the early 1800s.
It has come to my attention that a Julia Tenyck born 1810
NJ married John Thomas in Ross county,OH 1830. Was there any direct relationship between Andrew and Julia? Andrew was son of Matthew and Cornelia Post Ten Eick who left NJ for OH in 1812. Their other children were Henry,Matthew Jr.,
John and Cornelia. John left OH and settled in Wayne IN in the 1830s.

My ancestor, Henry Bramble married Sarah Turner in 1815/6 in Ross County. Their children, William, Samuel, James and Rebecca were born there. Sarah died in 1832 and Henry married second, Eliza Nichol in 1833 and had children Sarah and Lewis. The family left Ross County before 1849, and went to Indiana, but I do not know where they lived in Indiana.
Thomas Orahood Jr.'s "mystery" children

Thomas Orahood Jr. married Catherine "Catie" Bowers in Ross County in 1820. Catie died in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana in 1831. Thomas took their children back to Ohio after Catie's death, left them with relatives, and then went to Iowa where he married and had another family. Orahood researchers have been unable to find any proof of who these children were. There were reportedly three. Andrew Jackson Orahood was almost certainly one of them. In 1850 he was living in the household of Edward and "Ethli" Young and this Ethli was Thomas Jr.'s sister. Andrew Jackson Orahoods descendants are the Arahoods. I think another child of Thomas and Catie may have been John Wesley Orahood who first shows up in census records in Schuyler County, Illinois and always claimed to have been born in New York. But we haven't found a trace of any Orahoods in New York that early. John Wesley Orahood died in Missouri. I've also wondered if the Ethla Orahood who married Ward Strope in Fayette County in 1846 was another one of these "mystery" children. According to the 1860 census, she was born in 1830 in Indiana.
All three of these were born at about the right time to support my theory and so far, we haven't found any other indication as to who their parents were.
If anyone has come across anything about these people, I would appreciate hearing about it. And if anyone is researching any of the Orahood/Orihood/Arahoods. I'd be happy to exchange information.
Looking for information on Coons and Howe ancestry

Two related postings

Coons Family Genealogy Forum posting(2006) by Colin Clark, states a Henry Coons, b ~1775, Berkeley County VA, married Mary Howe. Three children, Elizabeth, b1789?, John b 1797, Phillip, b 1800, other children names not known.

Coons Family Genealogy Forum posting by Samuel Johnston(1999): Searching for information on the parents of Henry Coons.
