Naturalization Certificate

My gr, gr grandfather, Johann Tobias Weidinger, immigrated from Germany to Ross County, Ohio in 1860. According to naturalization records that I obtained through FamilySearch.org, he became a U.S. citizen in October 1884.

FamilySearch recently added to its online collection the “Ohio, Southern District Naturalization Index, 1852-1991," which is a “card index of naturalization records from the U.S. District Courts in the Southern District of Ohio...” Among the cards is one for a John Wehringer. This card, which I believe may be for my gr, gr grandfather based on the “Date of Naturalization (October 10, 1884),” shows a “Certificate no. (D-223),” which I would very much like to find/view.

Could this certificate be among records which are available at the Ross County Archives - or possibly at the Ross County Library or Ross County Historical Society?
Thanks! This is remarkable. This family has been pretty heavily genealogyized over the years and their burial place doesn't seem to have been recognized ...

I wonder if you can give me the title, etc. of your source of information so that I can make a proper reference. Then, I think I'll see if I can get a findagrave member to take a photo ...
Thanks again -

That's Great!
I don't need the other McCrackins, but just in case - Sarah's parents, John and Mary Hanawalt apparently died in 1873 and 1877 respectively. They were long-time residents of Bourneville. Any clues to their burial place??

William W. McCrackin was a Civil war veteran and store owner near Bourneville, Ross County. His wife Sarah J. (Hanawalt) McCrackin died in Bourneville in 1891. Their son Robert H. McCrackin was also a store owner in Ross County.

I wonder if someone familiar with local Ross County sources would be able to track down ...

When in 1891 did Sarah J. McCrackin die, and where is she (and William) buried???

Thanks!

Early Adair - Dent connection

This was in a Zanesville, Ohio Newspaper.
It may be interesting to our citizens to know that the Dent family were residents of Zanesville along about the year 1810 and 1812. The sons of the family were Frederick and Lewis Dent. Frederick, recently deceased, was the father of Mrs. Ulysses Grant.
Lewis Dent was the paymaster of the 3d Regiment,
O. V. I., under Col. Lewis Cass, serving in Gen. Hull's expedition.
Two of the sisters married in Zanesville. One named Eleanor, (for whom Nellie Grant was named) married Col. Abraham Wood. He was at one time a saddler, at other time, a merchant, and afterwards built and owned a furnace. He was a brother-in-law to Peter Mills, a well-known citizen of Zanesville who married Col. Wood's sister.
Another sister married Mr. Adair who soon left Zanesville and settled in Chillicothe. The sons after leaving Zanesville, settled in St. Louis.

Zanesville Daily Courier
Wed. Eve. December 7, 1873

Note: Another Zanesville Historian noted that Priscilla Dent married Alexander Adair.

Hello again. A few months ago, I discovered a web site for the Snyder Family and other families who married Synders of Ross County, OH. They also have quite a lot of information on the Evans and Hurles families. You can search it freely but if you want to post a message or reply to one, you have to register but it's free. They can also send you email when someone posts to it. Here is the link and it just so happens someone else is looking for Adam Evans. Here is the link: http://lostourcensus.com/snyder/2013/04/04/charles-wesley-ev...
First, let me thank you for responding. We feel a little like puppies chasing our own tails at this point, and any help or leads shared with us would be very much appreciated.

At this time we are unsure of the first name, but it has been rumored to be an Adam Evans. We can't find an Adam Evans that fits the profile of the man we are looking for, and so we are also looking at any Evans in the right age group whose middle initial is "A". He should be either in your William or your David's age group, or their siblings. We are looking for a man in the age range to have fathered a child in 1888.

Our male DNA result indicates "Evans" and we know this is a long-shot, because there is no specific info on him. He would most likely be the father of Wesley A. Snyder b. 1888 Ross Co., Ohio or his maternal grandfather, Frederick W. Snyder b. 1822 in Germany. We have chosen to try to link this name to Wesley, as we don't know for sure who his father was, and it is less likely that his German grandfather would have been connected to the Evans DNA.

In 1888, this (Adam?) Evans would most likely be a single man, a widowed or divorced man, or a man abandoned by his wife, or maybe he abandoned his wife. He would have most likely been in the Franklin twp., Ross Co. or nearby area at that time or maybe was traveling through that area for his work, traveling to market, or some other reason.

Wesley's mother was married and had other children, but they had been abandoned by her husband years before she gave birth to Wes. Although we haven't ruled out her husband as Wesley's father, we are curious to know whether this DNA result may hold a clue. Wesley seems to have no birth record on file in Ross or surrounding counties.

Thank you.

I have 14 Evans on my database, mostly from Ross County, Ohio. The oldest one is William Evans, born 1836, who died in 1906. He was married to Mary Hurles and they had 5 children. Their son, David Evans, born 3 Feb 1859 in Chillicothe, Ross County, OH died 4 Mar 1934 inChehalis, Lewis County, WA. Do you have any first names of the Evans you are searching? I could check against the ones I have.

Is anyone researching Evans families in Pike or Ross County? We have virtually no information, except the following:

A recent DNA test result indicates there may be Evans ancestry in one of our family groups, but we are unable to determine who or how this Evans may have fit into the family tree, unless by illegitimate birth. There are no known records to document this possibility at the courthouses in either county. Extensive research over a period of 10 years has resulted in no leads.

If anyone is researching Evans lines, we are looking for any possible leads on a male, born approximately between 1835-1865. Names, dates and locations will provide us a direction to focus our research and would be greatly appreciated.

Our families are mostly from the Franklin twp., Ross & Jackson twp., Pike Co. areas between 1860-1900. They were also known to have been in Jefferson & Huntington townships during that period.

If you would prefer to communicate by private email, you may contact me at: researchinq@outlook.com

Yes, I would very much like any information on the lineage of the Hugh Stewart who was born ca 1757, and later lived and died near Frankfort, Ohio. Family lore said that he had a quarrel with his father and destroyed all records and ties to his family. I have been engaged primarily in researching the lives of his children and descendants, and especially their involvement with the Underground Railroad in Ross and Fayette counties of Ohio, so have made no concerted effort to go further back in the family. But I would welcome such knowledge as you have. One question that is open is the family connection, if any, with the Covenanter line of Presbyterianism. There are some strong family connections to Covenanters, but I have no evidence as to Hugh Stewart's personal beliefs. I can be reached directly at: hughfullerton@gmail.com. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide. Hugh S.
Since I am responding to an older request you might have already discovered the parents of The Hugh Stewart you seek. Our family has extensive research on the Hugh Stewart arriving in Philadelphia from Ireland at the age of 16 in 1735. He is the father of Hugh born in 1757 and married to Elizabeth. Hugh 1 was the youngest son, born in Glasgow Scotland 1716. Rather than duplicate information you might have already discovered I will leave it at that. if you want further generations please contact me via email.

Here you go- Oscar and Dorothy's marriage license.
He was born in Franklin County, Kentucky, parents Jeff Colvin and Sarah Johnston
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-23410-6540-44?...

If it doesn't open, go to the database for Ohio County Marriages, 1789-1994. Select Lawrence County, book 26, then go to image 266

It also confirms his birth year of 1889

You are a genius!! Thanks so much! Also may explain why I am having such a hard time finding his records. Notice he signed his name Osker Calvin. Mother's maiden name is spelled Johnston rather than Johnson. Makes me wonder if Osker Calvin is actually the name he was born with.

I think we just hit the jackpot! I found this site for history for Lawrence County Ohio, where Oscar's daughter Sarah died. This is the list for obits from 1900-1930. It lists a Sarah Colvin, and...Mrs. Oscar Colvin! You can order them from the person who compiled the list at 5 dollars a pop! The ordering information is at the top of the page. The whole site has a ton of info! The marriage index, under brides, has one listed for Dorothy and Oscar.
http://www.lawrencecountyohio.com/deaths/1930deaths/1930co_c...

The further I dig the less sure I am about some of the info I have on Sarah, Jeff, and Lee. Sarah died August 21, 1930 in Marion, Fayette, Ohio. Her death certificate says she was buried August 22, 1930 in Carlisle, Kentucky.

Lee on the other hand I am having problems with. I only find one instance where he is referred to as Levi and that is in Walter Lee Colvin's obituary which is dated May 10, 1946 so even though the date of birth may be correct, the date of death would not be. Here is a link to Walter's obituary. http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/53423688/person/13540497041/m...

It's been awhile (: I would just suggest clicking on Contact us link, and ask what their procedure is.

Also, there is this Ohio obituary index, that lists Dorothy Colvin
http://index.rbhayes.org/hayes/index/

Lee and Sarah Colvin are buried in Delaware County, hers says birth April 1930, I think that must actually be the burial date, and his birthdate is 1863, not 1963! Click on the name of the cemetery to search for Sarah.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=co...;

Check the dates for me, I am not sure this is the right Lee and Sarah Colvin.
