Looking for information on the family of John Hays who lived in Richland county, married Catherine Cunningham, had Abner, Sarah and John. Catherine died and John married Catherine M Weaver and had Daniel 1848, William 1850, Lavina 1852, Jacob 1854, Valores 1857, Eli 1859, Marchard Ellsworth, Rilla May, George Sherwood and Samuel Kirkwood Hays. Info on the census says John Hays was born in Pennsylvania. We have no idea what county. Need any info that might lead us to John's parents, and birth info. Thanks.

Carl, I do have copies but I would like to know your interest in this John Neff. I looked at your Johnson family tree and the only connection I can see is Martha Neff who married a Johnson. My John Neff is far removed from Martha's line. She is from Abraham Neff, brother of my John Neff (born 1795). Abraham & John were both born in Germany.

Thank you, Peggy. I was aware of the Susannah Flick connection, but wonder how it all plays into the Cline connection. I suspect that something happened to the family, most likely in Indiana, based on James' comment about his sister's death, but no luck with that research as of yet, either. I was also looking earlier to see if there is a "Flick-Cline" relationship, but no luck with that so far. Thanks again for your response!

David Wallace

He has siblings Jonathan, Robert, Petter/Peter. Which of the many Cline's in Richland Co. in early 1800 are their parents? Are there more siblings? I find Jacob and brothers in Warren Co., IL by 1847 and census of 1850 and then in Fayette Co., IA by 1856. Do you know anything about them?

Standard Cline/Charles Wallace Relationship - 1860

I'm trying to discover the relationship between Charles Wallace and Standard and Elizabeth Cline of Bloominggrove Township. Charles is listed as a "Cline heir" in the 1860 census, living with Standard and Elizabeth Cline. Charles was born in Whitley County, Indiana, in 1844, the youngest son of James and Susannah (Flick?) Wallace, whom I believe were married in Richland County in 1836. The family, with the exception of Charles and his older brother, James Monroe Wallace, disappear from records after 1850. James Monroe Wallace mentions in his Civil War pension application the his sister, Eleanor Wallace, died prior to 1860. Both brothers enlisted in the 120th Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Shenandoah in 1862.

Afterward I read one of your earlier posts indicating you had a photo of Henry and Rachel, which I was very surprised to find even existed. I'd very much like to obtain a scan of that, in particular, if you could send one to me. Hoping to hear from you. Thanks. Dale

I DO have really nice professional photos of (I beleive) all of Isaac and Caroline's family, and I would love to discover which one is which and share them. I have worked a bit on our shared ancestry and when I get into it again, I would be glad to share it with you. Are you the grandchild of Clarine,Bessie,Loucile,Dewy,Reed,or Oleta??

Graham's History of Richland County says that Eliza McConnell CRAIG's father was Hugh McConnell (see page 697) who was, at the time (and since about 1832, living in Richland County). The 1850 Census shows Hugh McConnell, wife Mary, daughters Mary & Eliza, son James and probably 2 grandchildren in Springfield Twp. This fits the CRAIG history. This Mary was born about 1829 in Pennsylvania and may or may not be your Mary J McConnell

Also, there was a Joseph McConnell in Jefferson Twp as early as 1814, probably providing the connection between the McConnells and the Lefevers.

Mary J. McConnell - in Richland Co. circa 1850s

I have been desperately looking for the McConnell family - Mary J. McConnell in particular, who I think was born in Ohio around 1826. I have some letters written in the 1850s to my GGG grandmother Rachel P. LeFever Moore. In her letters, Mary J. McConnell referred to Rachel as "Coz" and "Cousin" but I have not yet made the connection with her and Rachel's family. Rachel lived in Bellville, Ohio.

In the letters, Mary J. refers to her sisters Margaret, Martha, and Eliza. I'm wondering if Eliza is the Eliza McConnell who married Dr. J. W. Craig.

In 1850, Mary J. McConnell was listed in the Federal census with the John and Rebecca LeFever Markey family in Bellville (Rebecca was Rachel's sister); Margaret McConnell was listed with the William and Jane LeFever family, in Jefferson Township, Richland Co. (Bellville).

If you know anything about Mary J. McConnell, please respond to this post. This mystery is driving me crazy!

Thank you so much!
Steph Jobes

This is not related to your request, I just thought it was interesting two people from Little Rock were on this list. I also have researched Kuhn or Kyhn families in Copenhagen in the 1800s. I believe they came from Saxony originally. Small world!

Yeah- Sure. No problem. I live pretty close to the OGS library. It's easy to do for you. I will take the info you gave with me when I next go. If the marriages happened in Richland County they should be in the books but if not they have ways of looking in the old local papers for announcements. If you have any other things you might need from the area check out www.ogs.org and look under research- they have a ton of different types of info available and a lot of it is indexed on their site so you can have someone do a favor for you or so you can order OGS copy service. I have found them to be AWESOME for Richland info because the library is in Richland County and the RCGS meets there. I'll let you know what I find! :)

Wow, thanks for the tip! No, I am not local...I live in Little Rock, AR. It would be great if you could look it up your next time in the library. This is the information I have:
Philip Reymer Kuhn m. Bertha Cutler 19 September 1860.

I am also looking for a second marriage for Bertha's father, James. If you might glance at that, too, it would be wonderful:
James Cutler m. Asenath Unknown sometime between 1855 and 1860.

Thanks again for your help!

Well, I have had pretty good luck with this series of books: Original marriage records for Richland County, Ohio : [1813-1871] / prepared by M.A.G.I.C. (Mohican Area Genealogists Interested in Computers). They contain the photocopies of the original marriage records for the county. The books (including index) can be found at the OGS library. You can use the index or wing it and searcht the book by time period. the date is listed on every record so in case there was a mistake you just leaf through to the right month and scan for the right one. Are you local to the Mansfield area or not? If not I am planning to go the library soon, I could look and copy then scan it for you if I find it?

In the 1860 census, the closest I can find to a John and Mary Stratton in Richland county are:

John Straten, age 56, born Germany
Margaret Straten, age 55, born Germany
Christine Straten, age 21 born Germany
John Straten, age 13, born Ohio

There is also a Mary Stratton, age 63, born Pennsylvania with what appears to be a married daughter, Rachel A Chamberlain with husband Joseph and daughter Sarah E Chamberlain.

In the 1850 census, there is a John and Mary Stratton with daughter, Elizabeth -- in Madison, Richland, Ohio. John, age 38, born Ohio. Mary, age 38, born Pennsylvania. Elizabeth, age 18, born Ohio.

In the 1850 census in Butler, Richland, Ohio, there is also a Mary Stratton, age 45, born Pennsylvania, with daughters Elizabeth and Rachel, both age 14, born Ohio. This Mary and Rachel are a good match for the Mary Stratton and Rachel Chamberlain in the 1860 census.

On Ancestry.com, in the Ohio Marriages 1803-1900 database, there is a marriage record for John Wilcox and Elizabeth Sloan in Richland County on 15 Jan 1861.

On www.familysearch.org, in the International Genealogy Index (IGI), there is an "extracted marriage record" for John Wilcox and Elizabeth Sloan on 15 Jan 1861 in Richland County, Ohio. IGI batch# M514154

On the Richland County Ohio GenWeb site, there is an entry in the "Early Marriage Records, 1861", for January 1861, for John Wilcox and Elizabeth Sloan.

For an Elizabeth Stratton, there is a marriage record for Elizabeth Stratton and Matthias Buzzard, dated 29 July 1853 in Richland County. This record can be found in the Ancestry Ohio Marriages database, in the familysearch.org IGI database (batch# M514152), and on the Richland GenWeb site.

In the 1860 census, in Mansfield, Richland, Ohio, there is a Martin and Elizabeth Buzzard family, Martin born in Pennsylvania and Elizabeth born in Ohio.

The marriage of Elizabeth Stratton and John C. Wilcox is listed as occuring on 15 Jan 1861 in Richland County. I don't have a source listed for that. I would either have found it on the Richland County, Ohio, genealogical website (extensive information there) or Ancestry.com, I would believe. I have information for a possible 2nd husband, however. I also have (elusive) information on Elizabeth's death at the home of son Charles in New York.

I am researching John Stratton and Mary Bishop, her parents, who lived in Richland County at the time of Elizabeth's marriage. Mary Bishop Stratton is the sister of my 3rd great-grandfather. I have extensive information on the Bishop line if you are interested as well as additional information on the Strattons.

I wish I could see the original marriage document---Maybe I could see if she had been married before and was married to a "Sloan". This has remained a mystery for a long time. If she had been married to a "Sloan" there should be a marriage of an "Elizabeth Stratton" to this person. Maybe it took place somewhere else.
Are you searching for Wilcox and Sloan?
Thank you very much for your answer and for your time.

There is a John and Elizbeth Wilcox in the 1870 census in Mohican, Ashland, Ohio with an oldest child, Charles F Wilcox who is abt 9 years old.
