Elvina Cooper

Elizabeth's father Henry Schneck moved to Richland Co and is buried there, but I haven't been able to find Peter's family of origin or siblings. Peter's obit might be helpful, but the Marvin library said that paper is missing. He died 20 March 1882.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated!

Searching for connections to the CLEVER family of Richland County, Ohio. My husband's great-grandmother was Golda/Goldie Geraldine CLEVER, born 1881 in Richland, who married John Albert PETERSON in Milwaukee, WI, in 1898. Goldie and John are shown in the 1910 US census living in Chicago, with 5 children, all born in Illinois; the oldest, Blanche, is already 10 years old. Other children were John Jr. (age 8, my husband's grandfather); Mildred (6); Roy O. (4); and Walter G. (not recorded). Goldie's parents were William Garrison CLEVER and Alberta "Birdie" SMITH; William's parents were John CLEVER and Harriet Amelia ANDREWS. John's parents were John CLEVER and Mary STRICKLER. And I can go back at least two more generations (thanks to the generosity of another researcher), if anyone is interested in further details. We would welcome any clues or connections.

I am searching for information on my Grandfather, Harold Funston. He was born in or near Mansfield, OH somewhere around 1900. He died around January of 1950 in a magic accident. He was married to Mabel Kountz somewhere in Ohio, probably near Cincinnati or Cuyahoga Falls. They had three children, Ronald, Robert and Wanita.

Harold traveled with Blackstone the Magician and was set to appear in the NY Worlds fair in the 40's that never happened. He was also listed in the Guiness Book of World records for something. We have never been able to substantiate this from Guiness.
Harold's parents were John and Nettie Funston. Nettie was a Bloomfield either before or after she married John. She did come to the marriage with a son. But that son was adopted by John.

Another marker for this family is that John's marriage to a divorce or widow whatever Nettie was. Brought some sort of scandal to the Funstons of Mansfield, OH. They are tight-lipped and I could use some help in shedding light on Harold and his family.

Our family was also in possession of a dagger that was supposed to belong to General Funston during his Philippine campaign. It has since has disappeared.
You see, lots of mystery here. Help please.

Redd - Painter challenge #1: Frederick Co., Virginia & Richland Co., Ohio

John Painter (1775-1860), a son of John Painter and Susannah Stratton, was born and grew up in Frederick County, Virginia. He is reported to have married twice. His second wife, Rachel Redd, daughter of George Redd and Rachel Fawcett, is reasonably well documented, as are their 12 children. There is an 1808 marriage record for John and Rachel #2, and ensuing Quaker disciplinary actions against Rachel, her father, and John’s brother Robert. [A]

John Painter’s first wife is the challenge. John Painter and Rachel Redd, probable daughter of Andrew Redd and Elizabeth Hollingsworth, may have been married in the mid- or late-1790s. Yet there is no surviving marriage record, nor does there seem to be any original document that mentions Rachel #1 specifically. The couple reportedly had five sons. Nothing is known of two of them, reportedly Lawrence and Washington, except their names. For the remaining three sons, reportedly Jacob, Andrew, and Ephraim, no known document links them to their parents nor to each other.

About the closest item of proof that Rachel Redd #1 existed and married a Painter is the 1818 will of Andrew Redd of Frederick County, Virginia. He directed: “to my grandson Ephraim Painter one hundred and fifty dollars to be paid to him by my executor when he arrives at the age of twenty one years.” Ephraim clearly was not a son of Andrew Redd’s daughter Elizabeth (also mentioned in the will) who married in 1799 Isaac Painter (a first cousin of John Painter). Ephraim did not migrate to Ohio with his father and Rachel #2 around 1812. Instead, Epraim probably grew up in his grandfather’s household; was married and died in Frederick County.

The late Harold Painter included in “The Painter Family” (1975) the following biographical sketch of his grandfather, Nelson William Painter, from Mark A. McGruder, “History of Pettis County, Missouri” (Topeka Historical Publishing Co., 1919), p. 688.

“NELSON PAINTER…a son of Hamilton and Matilda (Grub) Painter. Hamilton was born in Virginia and was a son of John Painter.
“John Painter was twice married and both his first and second wives strangely bore the maiden name of Rachel Red, although they were not related. To both of his marriages were born 17 children.”

Nelson William Painter was born 23 August 1838 in Richland County, Ohio, presumably on the Painter family’s farm in Perry Township. He lived with or near his paternal grandparents John and Rachel #2, and was enumerated in the same household with them in the 1850 census. He moved to Missouri in 1860, the year John passed away, was a Union soldier, and returned to Richland County in 1865-66, while Rachel #2 was still living. Nelson himself was living when his biographical sketch was published, and almost certainly provided the information, which seems to be very reliable.

While indicating nothing of the existence of Rachel #1, Hazel M. Kendall, “This Book Records the Descendants of William Gregg the Friend Immigrant to Delaware 1682…” (Anderson, Indiana: 1944), p. 146, indicated that John Painter’s marriage to Rachel #2 was his second marriage. “…John Painter 1775-1860 Richland Co. Ohio (m. (2) Rachel Redd 1781-1862 prob. dau. of George Redd m. 1781 Rachel Fawcett…” In this same paragraph, however, there is information missing, questionable, or wrong.

EEP

[A] Marriage license: John Painter & Rachel Redd, 2 Jun 1808, Frederick Co., Virginia; Lewis Chastain, minister. "Frederick County, Virginia, Marriages," Eliza Timberlake Davis, ed. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1973), p. 57. Chastain, a Methodist minister, also performed the marriage ceremony for John's first cousin Abraham Painter in 1807.

3 Jul 1809: Rachel (Redd) Painter, "Married out [of discipline]--testimony signed against and referred back to [Hopewell] Women's Mtg." (Joint Committee of Hopewell Friends, "Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia" (Strasburg, Virginia: Shenandoah Publishing House, Inc., 1936), p. 525.)

4 Sep 1809: Robert Painter and George Redd disowned by Hopewell for "Attending a wedding accomplished contrary to discipline." (Joint Committee of Hopewell Friends, "Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934, Frederick County, Virginia" (Strasburg, Virginia: Shenandoah Publishing House, Inc., 1936), p. 515.)

Cross posted to: Painter; Redd; Frederick County, Virginia; and Richland County, Ohio message boards.
Creigh family

I am looking for information on Samuel A. Creigh who lived in Franklin for the 1830 census. He married Lydia Lock in Mansfield Oct 5, 1823. He is also found on the 1840 census. He was born about 1798 in Maryland. There are several other Creigh families living in the area. David and John Thomas whom I suspect are his brothers. I found a land patent for CREIGH, JOHN T OH Crawford 8/6/1834 Wooster 2931 OH0570__.455
CREIGH, SAMUEL A OH Crawford 8/6/1834 Wooster 2729 OH0570__.253
for Crawford County, both issued the same day. Both list Richland County as their residence. I think John moved to Morrow County, Samuel moved with his family to Indiana in 1844. I am also trying to identify Lydia's father. Can anyone around Richland County help me find a family for Samuel Alexander Creigh?

Stephen STILLWELL and Lydia TRYON - VT/CT/OHIO

I am looking for information about the family of Stephen STIL(L)WELL and Lydia TRYON who were married on 10/9/1792 in Wethersfield, Hartford County, CT at the New Haven Second Church. Lydia was born 12/16/1767 in Wethersfield, CT and was the daughter of Abijah TRYON and Eunice FRANCIS.

Stephen was born about 1768 and was mentioned as a native of Ransomville, New York in his marriage record to Lydia. Stephen was an early settler of Huron County, OH in the 1811-1815 time frame. The History of Huron County, OH book mentions that Stephen was a native of Vermont. So it is possible that they were married in CT but lived in VT prior to coming to Ohio.

The Stephen Stil(l)well family family appears in the 1820 and 1830 Huron County, OH census. They lived near Plymouth on the Huron and Richland County, OH border. Stephen died on 4/30/1846 in Huron County while Lydia died on 10/6/1862 in Huron County.

It is believed that children of Stephen and Lydia included:

1) Eunice md. Asa CHURCH on 1/17/1822 in Richland County, OH
2) Francis md. Susan WYKCOFF on 1/20/1820 in Richland County, OH
3) Sarah Jane (Sally) md. Thomas LARGE on 1/21/1831 in Huron County, OH (It appears that Sarah may have been married previously to Thomas and had a daughter with her 1st husband)
4) Clarissa md. Aaron KNOTT on 5/2/1828 in Huron County, OH

It is also possible that there were a couple other daughters named: Mary and Rebecca.

I would like to hear from anyone who might have additional information on Stephen, Lydia, and/or their children. Thank you.

C. R. Marshall, of Richland county, Ohio (sword of Col/Capt John Marshall)

Hi, Richland list, I am looking for decendants of CR Marshall who is a decendant of Col. John Marshall. This person was in possesion of a sword given to John by George Washington. I would just like to see it or have a picture of this sword. And find a living Marshall of this line or people working in this line.

There is also supposed to be a silhouette of John made around 1776 that was in the hands of a decendant.

John is supposed to be burried on the Marshall farm in Richland County. I think he should have a special marker since he had a big part in the revolution that has been forgotten.

If you are in this family line, know of this sword or know where John is burried, let me know and maybe join my site

Joe Marshall

this is the Col/Capt John Marshall page on my site

http://www.chipster.us/phpGedView/individual.php?pid=I1387

and my other links
http://www.MiscellaneaMarescalliana.org

rootsweb: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=aaronmarshel1740

DNA site: http://www.chipster.us/AaronMarshallDNAline/default.htm

marshall DNA: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~marshalldna/Marshal...

Looking for cemetery / burial information on William J Macomber and Elsia Ferguson (Elise Furguson) Macomber who were residents of Blooming Grove Twp from before 1840 until after 1880 -- and raised 8 children there.

Other sources have William Macomber's death date as 1 Aug 1887. The death date for Elisa F Macomber is unknown but I assume that she died before 1900. Believe that both died in Blooming Grove and believe it is likely that both are buried there.

There is a short bio for William J Macomber on the Richland County Rootsweb site.

Greatly appreciate any and all information.

Regards,

D.

I am looking for the burial location(s) of my g-g grandparents, Daniel B Gedney and Alice Gedney nee Macomber. Daniel was reported to have died in 1895 in Shiloh Twp. Alice Gedney died 18 Apr 1928 -- also reported to be in Shiloh. Also looking for a specific death date and age at death for Daniel Gedney.

Daniel Gedney was born abt 1842 in NY. Alice Macomber was born 22 Oct 1843 in Greenwich Twp, Huron County, Ohio.
Daniel Gedney and Alice Macomber were married on 5 Apr 1866 in Richland County. From the census records, they were living in Haskins Twp, Wood County, Ohio in 1870 and 1880. They returned to Richland County sometime after 1880 where Daniel Gedney was reported to have died in 1895. Alice L Gedney died on 18 Apr 1928. Per family notes, both were reported to have died in Shiloh. The 1900 and 1920 census shows Alice Gedney living in Cass Twp.

Daniel Gedney was a doctor. Daniel and Alice had three daughters and one son as follows.

Ada Gedney 1868 - 1964 (school teacher, principle)
Bertha Gedney 1869 - 1963, w/o William Henry Fritz
Hattie Gedney 1870 - 1956, w/o Peter L Willet
William Roy (Ray?) Gedney 1881 - 1940

Any information would be greatly appreciated.
I would like to communicate with anyone who has knowledge of HARDENs or HARDINs who have roots in Richland Co., OH. My G4 grandfather was Isaac HARDEN who lived in Somerset Co., PA in the 1700s and early 1800s. One of his sons, John HARDEN or HARDIN, migrated to Allen County, OH in the early 1800s and later moved to Auglaize County. By the early 1900s some of John HARDIN's descendants were living in Mansfield in Richland County. Do HARDINS still Live in Richland County?

If there are any HARDEN/HARDIN researchers who read this message, please contact me.

Levi Stevenson (b. 1785 PA), son of John Stevenson (b. 1751 Ireland) and Sarah Nye (b. 1749 Scotland). His son William Ambrose (b. 1808 PA) is my grandfather's (Irven Ellsworth Stevenson) grandfather. Levi and his wife, Elizabeth Kennedy (b. 1783 Ireland) moved to Weller Township after Wm A. was born and had several more children while residing there: Andrew J. (1813), Samuel (1816), Mary (1816), Elizabeth (1819), and Anna (1821).

William Ambrose and his wife Minerva Foulks (b. 1813 Columniana, OH) had many children, most of whom, I believe, stayed in Weller Township; Simon (b. 1856) moved to Sioux Falls, SD, where my grandfather was born -- and met and married my grandmother, Iva Frances Crawford (b. 1897 Iowa).

Considering how long the family farmed in Weller Township, I figure maybe some descendents are still there. Would love to here from you!

THRUSH, Roland - Michigan

In the 1930 Census, Roland Thrush was living in Detroit, Mich. with wife, Lois and child Alma. Looking for living relatives to perhaps provide me with a photo of Francis M. Grim (Roland's grandfather), who fought in the Civil War. In the 1930 Census Roland's parents (Herbert Thrush and Lily B. (Grim) Thrush) lived in Warren Co., Virginia.

I am also related to the Grims. I sent for and received Francis Grim's Civil War records. Now I am looking everywhere for a photo. Thanks, Marianne

Research trip

I plan on being in Ohio some time the week after Mother's Day (depends on how long it takes me to drive from Wichita, KS and how soon my 98 year old mother will let me leave) and want to do research in Licking and Richland Counties. Since I am totally unfamiliar with that part of the country, I am looking for a good place to stay while I am there. Also, any hints on the libraries, court houses, genealogy societies, etc. would be helpful. Licking is pretty much getting information on people that I know about, but Richland is trying to break down a brick wall - or at least tumble a few bricks. Anyway, any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nancy - TX

Looking for more Crawford, Bargahiser, Coble & Rawley family info...

Hi, I am researching info on Jackson H Crawford family in Ohio. I have a photo of Laura (Bargahiser) Crawford/Price at:
http://charocfl.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=charocfl...

Note that after Jackson Henry Crawford was shot on duty as Chief of Police of Findlay she remarried to a Mr. Albert Price in Ohio. I would appreciate any info on Mr. Price's line to add to my family database.

Also note that Laura Bargahiser surname was also spelled as:
Barga
Bargaheiser
Bargahizer
Berkheiser

Laura’s portents from PA were George Washington (G W Bargahiser) & Fanny (Fannie) Coble.
Also note that the Coble surname was also spelled as Koble.

I am trying to verify the date that J. H. Crawford was shot while performing his duties at work. I believe it to be Apr 09 1923 & my mom said he was actually shot at work or at his office.

I would like to know if there is any place or person to contact to get a copy of the obit for Jack H. Crawford who was the Police chief of the Findley Ohio at the time of his death.

To see a photo of J h Crawford taken in 1904 when he was a policeman go to this link:
http://charocfl.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=charocfl...

The caption said the photo was taken in front of the Municipal building. Also in the photo are (from L-R): Harry Stark clerk in the water works office; Russell Morrison, police court clerk; John Kramer, chief of police; (NOTE: J H Crawford is listed as Jack Crawford, policeman; Will Heck, city auditor and Clark Edie, city clerk. The children are listed as unknown but my grand father Verl B. Crawford would have been about 12 years at the time of the photo & I know Aunt Myrtle (Myrt) Crawford was a few years younger & was short when she died. Note Myrtle or Myrt Crawford married a Mr. Binder & moved to Toledo OH where she became a chiropractor.

I am also currently trying to also find data on J H Crawford’s ancestors who originated in Ireland, possibly Tipperary & settled in around the Warren County Pennsylvania area, ref.:
http://charocfl.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=charocfl...
&
http://charocfl.tribalpages.com/tribe/browse?userid=charocfl...

The only data that I can verify at this time is that William and Catherine (Duggan) Crawford they were married March 27, 1829 also in Tipperary on Mar 27 1829. I have found several different links with this same data. But I have not been able to confirm the data that Ann Johnson posted indicating that Patrick Henry Crawford for Tipperary, Ireland was baptism in 1842 in Tipperary, Ireland and married to Margaret Downs she was also born in Ireland. Note that Jackson Henry Crawford was born on May 27 1865 in PA, USA but that is all the PA data I have on him.

Patrick H. Crawford & Margaret Downs 9 children were:
Helen
M F & which I believe to possibly be Mike F or Michael F.
George
Mary
Tom or possibly Thomas
Sarah
James
Alice
Margaret

Appreciate any assistance with any or all research listed above.

Thanks:
Char O.
I have in my possession an image of a deed where John and Elizabeth Weyrick, husband and wife, are selling 2 lots of ground to Joseph Faransworth. The deed indicates that the property is located in Lupsick, Richland County, Ohio. I have never heard of this location, or seen it on a map. A Goggle search brings no results. Has anyone ever heard of a place called Lupsick, or know where it is? I am guessing it was probably a name that has long since been changed to something else... absorbed into a neighboring town, or abandoned entirely. The property in Lupsick was sold in 1828.

Michael Easterday married Amelia Royer in Richalnd County on March 11, 1852. I believe Royer was the name of Amelia's first husband, and her family name was Hossinger or Hassinger. I am trying to find information to prove or disprove this.

I am searching for information on Daniel STOUTZENBERGER (STOUTSENBERGER) and his wife, Eve ROWINSKY STOUTZENBERGER.
They were married ca 1821 in Lancaster Co., PA, but moved to Richland Co., OH, in the early years of their marriage.
They had a son, Daniel, b ca 1833 in Richland Co.,OH (Franklin Township). Eve also had two sisters who may have moved to the Richland Co., area also. Their names were: "Polly" ROWINSKY who married a Mr. DULIN and Elizabeth ROWINSKY who married a Mr. BLACK. I would like the first names of Mr. Dulin and Mr. Black and also the names of any children these families had. I am particularly interested in information on the parents of Eve, Polly and Elizabeth Rowinsky. Their father was Andrew Rowinsky and their mother was Maria Elizabeth Baer. Would like to know who Andrew and Maria's parents were and the names of other children Andrew and Maria may have had. Any information on these families would be most appreciated.
