My ggggrandfather, James D Ferguson was married in Preble Co on 24 Oct 1824 to Elizabeth T Ireland. Their first child James Arista was born the following year also in Ohio. I am wondering if anyone there has access to any records of the period that might indicate if any other members of the Ferguson or Ireland families were also there at that time(I did find a not that a Jane Ferguson was married to a John Ireland in April of 1824) and when they might have migrated. I have been able to discover that Ferguson was from North Carolina and Ireland from KY. would REALLY appreciate any suggestions or help. Thanks SO MUCH!!!
Linda Young
graybird@hotmail.com

I am trying to determine if John T. GREENFIELD is the father of the William Walter GREENFIELD (or perhaps Walter William GREENFIELD) who married Sarah Jane EKES in Preble Co., OH. Any other information on John T. GREENFIELD would also be helpful.

John GREENFIELD married Elizabeth SPROWL 31 Mar 1833 Preble Co., OH
Walter W. GREENFIELD married Sarah Jane EKES July 27, 1854 Preble Co., OH

A "W. Wm" is in John T. GREENFIELD's household in the 1850 census, and is of the correct age. I could find no other W. W. GREENFIELD in later census records around that area, other than the one who married Sarah EKES.

1850 Census: Linville, Bowling Green, Licking Co., OH p. 120
GREENFIELD, John T. 46 MD Farmer
", Elizabeth 34 OH
", W. Wm. 16 OH Farmer
", Alferd T. 14 OH
", Mary 12 OH
", Holland M. 9 OH (male)
", Sarah E. 7 OH
", John W. 5 OH
", W.B. 3 OH (male)

What I know about my William Walter GREENFIELD is that he was born January 11, 1833 in OH, that his first son was named Alfred (after his brother?) and his first daughter had Elizabeth for her middle name (after his mother?). In the 1900 census, W. W. GREENFIELD indicates his father was from Md. and his mother from OH, which also agrees with the 1850 census if John were his father.

Thanks,
-Eric Albers
erics_box@hotmail.com

WILLIS L. BUNCH and wife LAURA STELLA ZEEK, Preble Co OH

am seeking information on Willis L. Bunch born c1868 Preble Co OH, d. 30 Aug 1951 at Duke Rest Home in Jamestown. He was married to Laura Stella Zeek who died in 1935. Obits list three children:

1. Charles Eugene Bunch who lived in Dayton in 1935
2. Marie Bunch m. Charles Wynkoop - Marie d. 1926
3. Esta Bunch m. ?? Hapner

My grandfather, John McNamara, was orphaned as a young child and raised by "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in the Eaton OH area. I do not know the surname of the couple who raised him. My grandfather left this home between 1893-1903, and is living in Cincinnati in 1906.

My grandfather said that Uncle Will was a wheat farmer, and they often traveled between Eaton OH and Richmond IN. He said Uncle Will lost a great deal of money in the "wheat bust" of the 1880s.

I have searched for over 40 years to locate and identify the "Uncle Will and Aunt Laura" in Preble Co OH who raised my grandfather.

As far as I know, my grandfather, John McNamara, was born in Lexington KY on 30 Apr 1884 (one record says he was born in 1874). His SS form said his parents were: Frank McNamara and Mary McCoy. I have not confirmed this with marriage or death records.

The family story is that his mother died when he was a baby and his father was killed on the courthouse steps -- no other details. Why was this chld taken from Lexington to Eaton? What relationship to him was Uncle Will and Aunt Laura?

If anyone can get in touch with these BUNCH descendants, please ask them to contact me directly at:
mart2542@aol.com
Hello,
I am working on a project for my Master's Degree documenting old schools in Ohio. My website is www.oldohioschools.com

This site is for the schools built after the one-room era. I am looking for pictures and information on any schools from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The categories are :

Gone- Schools which have been razed

Abandoned- Schools which are closed and not used for any other purpose

Endangered- Schools which are closing soon or have recently closed and likely to become abandoned or razed

Retired- Schools which are not used as public classroom buildings but serve in some other capacity (apartments, offices, etc)

Functional- Schools still in use as classroom buildings

**DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THE OLD WEST ALEXANDRIA HIGH SCHOOL IS STILL STANDING?

I would appreciate any updates to the information I already have posted, such as dates and locations, as well as any pictures or new information to post. Please contact me at aaronturner@Neo.rr.com if you can help!

Fairmount Cemetery Contact Info - Re: Bosticks

Is there an office at the Fairmount Cemetery? I know that Ann E (aka Lide) Bostick is buried at Fairmount Cemetery in Camden Ohio. She is buried next to her parents Major and Rebecca Bostick and her sister, Mary J. Taft. Major and Rebecca have a huge monument...a lady standing next to a cross. According to her tombstone, she died 22 March 1929. However, I don't know where she died. I can't find a record of her death in Ohio. Is there any way to check burial records at Fairmount Cemetary to find out where she died?

(I've posted on this board previously as Roxanne Jones before registration was required)
Jesse Simonson married Mary Russell 23 July 1823 in Hamilton County, Ohio. I believe Mary lived in Elizabethtown. She was orphaned at an early age.

The Simonsons moved to Preble County after 1830 and raised many children.

Mary Russell Simonson's sister, Elizabeth, married Walter Kerr and lived in Dearborn County, Ind.

I am especially interested in locating the parents of Mary Russell. Family information states that her parents were Joseph Russell (or William Russell) and that her mother's name was Mary. I have been told that the Russells were both from New York and were married there.

Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated!
Where might my ancestor Elias ELLIOTT have been buried if he died in 1844, presumably residing in West Elkton(no census, just Preble County estate file)? His widow Sarah Elliott and her parents Solomon and Amelia STONE are in West Elkton/Gratis Twp. on the 1860 census. I don't know his religious affiliation, date of birth, or the identity of his parents. He and Sarah married May 19,1842 and my Grt. Grt. Grandfather William Clinton Elliott was born in Preble County, January 15, 1844. I have not been able to find Elias on an index. Any help, or suggestions are appreciated.

Looking for info on family of Henry Coons

The 1820 census of Butler County Ohio(just south of Preble county) included 3 Coons household:
Henry Coons, males 3<10, 2 10-15, 45up 1, females 3<10. 1 10-15, 1 26-44.
George Coons males 1 18-25, females 1 16-25.
William Coons, males 2<10, 1 18-25, females 1 16-25.
Seems likely that William and George are sons of Henry.
These Coons families possibly preceding generations to our William Coons, b ~1806, VA.

Coons Family ancestry posting(2006) by Colin Clark, states Henry Coons, b ~1775, Berkeley County VA, married Mary Howe. Three children, Elizabeth, b1789?, John b 1797, Phillip, b 1800, other children names not known.

Maybe no connection, but 1820 census of Butler County includes Ebenezer Howe, males 2 < 10, 1 10-15, 1 18-25, 1 45up, females, 1<10, 1 10-15, 3 16-25, 1 26-44.
Joel Doolittle Sarah Williams 1828 marriage

My ancestors Joel Doolittle and Sarah H. Williams married in Preble County on 17 Aug 1828 but lived most of their lives (I think from 1830 onwards) in Indiana--Decatur County and elsewhere. I know that Joel and his brother Josiah and nephew Loyal came to Ohio in the 1820s from upstate NY and previously Shoreham, Vermont. Loyal married in Preble County in 1829. But I can't find anything about Sarah Williams or who her parents were. In the 1880 census she indicates that she was born in New York about 1806 and that her father was born in Vermont and her mother in Massachusetts.

Can anyone identify who Sarah's family might have been?

I am looking for the marriage history of Laura Minta Taylor, born Sept of 1867 in Ohio (probably Preble County). I know she married Alonzo Matix (Mattix, Mattox) in 1885 (The Preble County District Library has a scanned copy of the marriage documents online.)

I believe that Laura Minta was remarried to a Thomas Lyons by 1920, but this is just a hunch, based on a story told to me by my great-aunt about her father's Aunt Minnie and Uncle Tom who owned a farm in Preble, Co., Ohio. The only aunt her father, William L. Taylor, had was Laura Minta Taylor, so I guessed that her nickname was "Minnie" from the middle name. I found a Laura M and Thomas Lyons living in Preble Co., Ohio in 1920 and 1930, the decade when my great-aunt would have gone there to visit them.

But then I found that Laura Minta Taylor married Alonzo Mattix (Matix) in 1885, so in order for these records to match, I need to verify Alonzo's death and Laura's remarriage.

Does anyone know anything?

Thanks, Lynn

Brig. Gen. Henry FRENCH -- in Preble Co. in 1808

***************************************************************************
Brig. Gen. Henry FRENCH (b.1785 d.1850) was among the Founding Fathers of Sullivan Co. Indiana, which was created in 1816.

On Oct. 20, 1808 ... Henry married Ehster (Hester) Howard (Hayworth) there in the Preble Co. OH. area. It appears he had a brother as well that married an Elizabeth Howard in 1809 (Jacob).

It's my belief that Hester & her family had recently migrated to Ohio from around North Carolina then.

Reportedly she had brothers named Jeremiah & Micajah, which settled in Vigo Co. IN., bordering Sullivan Co. Indiana.

I noticed in Preble Co. online searchable records that Henry FRENCH paid taxes, at least in 1816 as I remember it. Also it showed that Henry & his brother Jacob bought property there in 1811 & 1812.

Their father is said to be a James FRENCH. And James brought his family over to America from Wales in 1801.
Henry FRENCH had two children born there, & six more in Indiana. His firstborn was James (b.Nov 1809), & then Margaret was born there (b.Oct 1811).

Now something I hope someone can help me to uncover is Henry's military status there. He apparently was quite involved I believe, in the Ohio military/militia before he settled in Indiana.
I also believe that when William Henry Harrison was using the best troops & military minds in America for the Battle of Tippecanoe, that this is what originally may have brought Henry to the Sullivan Co. IN. area to start with.

Gen. Henry FRENCH's troops were at the Big Turtle Creek Fort located inside Sullivan Co. Indiana, & this was in 1811 prior to the War of 1812. He later bought that fort & all the property around it.

Some info that I've seen suggests that during the War of 1812, Henry was serving out of Ohio, even though he had been in Indiana.

Surely there would be some Ohio military info (state info) supporting his involvement there????

Can anyone there assist me with this research? I have seen only one Henry FRENCH shown from Ohio in the War of 1812, & I bet that this was indeed him. However ... that's all that I've seen on that ... just a name.

It also seems that there might would be some Ohio military info that was prior to the War of 1812 as well.

Can anyone help me with info on FRENCHes or HOWARD's (HAYWORTH's) there around 1805 to 1816?
.
Thank you sooo much if anyone can help me on this.

Donald A. French
Aaron Brower who married Polly Beall/Bell.

Any info on William would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jill
Burroughs and Alloways marriage

I am looking for info on Valorous Burroughs. He is a brother to my great grandfather, Eugene Burroughs. They were born in Delaware, Delaware, OH but I found a marriage record in Preble County for Valorous and Sadie Alloways. Valorous is with his family on the 1880 census (5 yrs old) but I can't seem to locate him anywhere else. William Alloways is the person who signed the marriage license application but I don't know how he is related to Sadie - father, brother or uncle. I can't seem to find the Alloways family either. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Preble County index lists James Evans marriage to Rachael Elliott as dated 21 April 1842, but transcription on other site says 21 Apr 1852. Would appreciate look-up to verify. Thanks Janet
