"History of Portage County, Ohio" published by Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, 1885

C.A. BARTHOLOMEW, farmer, P.O. Aurora Station, was born August 31, 1828, in Auburn, Geauga Co., Ohio; son of Jonathan P. and Mary (Wilson) Bartholomew, natives of Onongada County, N.Y., and Montpelier, Vt., respectively, and who came to Ohio in 1814, passing en route through Buffalo at the time that city was in flames, it having been fired by the British, settling permanently in Auburn Township, Geauga County. They had a family of twelve, nine of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, eight now living: Perleyett (Mrs. Frazee) in Burton, Geauga County; Julyann (Mrs. Redfield) in Fayette County, Iowa; C.A.; N.S.; Betsey (Mrs. L. Reed) in Burton; Mary (Mrs. Canfield) in Auburn; Alonzo D. in La Fayette County, Iowa; T.C.P. in Auburn. Jonathan P. Bartholomew died February 5, 1863; his widow survived until February 22, 1884. Our subject was married, in 1852, to Emily, daughter of Chauncey Winchell, a native of Suffield, Mass. Mr. Bartholomew is a prosperous farmer; he is prominently identified with the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Lodge 213, Twinsburg.

I'd really appreciate a lookup on a marriage record for my g.g.grandparents. I believe they were in Revenna around 1814-1817. (First son John b. 1818) I only know that my gggrandfather's name started with "J" and my gggrandmother's name was Elizabeth E. Maiden name? Elizabeth died in ottokee, Fulton Co, OH. Her gravestone says, "Betsey E., wife of "J" Stow." Her short obit said, "Stow- in Ottokke, Elizabeth Stow in the 60th year of her age died April 10, 1857." THEN it said, "Revenna papers please copy!" Can anyone help me with this? Or any other info that might be recorded on "J" & Elizabeth. Thanks!

William Wallace Smith was born in Hiram on March 2, 1829. His death certificate says parents are "unknown". I believe his father was William Ward Smith (known as Ward) and he died in 1829. Does anyone know where I might obtain records for William Wallace Smith's birth (and hopefully information about his parents) and/or William Ward (known as Ward) Smith's death? It is possible that his mother is Sophia Higley. Thank you.

Please check out the new page and let me know what you think or if you can help with any other information. It now loads much faster and is more user-friendly for people wanting to only view a certain county.

Hi

I have a Calvin White in the 1850 census living in Portage Ohio, age 46, born in New York. It looks like his wife is 20 to 30 yrs old. However In the 1850/60/70 census in Illinois his wife is the same age.

How would I search for the possible death of his wife between 1840 and 1849 in Portage, Ohio and a second marriage to Mary (last name unknown). I don't think he married in Illinois or at least I can't find it and he didn't have any other children

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Steve North (Australia)

Ravenna c. 1893 - directory available?

I have two girls in my family tree who went to Ravenna in 1893 from Ireland via Liverpool. What would the draw to Ravenna have been? I looked at the 1900 census and did not see any familiar family names. The girls were in Toledo, OH by 1900.

The two girls were the eldest in the family, Bridget Kilkenny, age 17, and her sister Mary Ann Kilkenny, age 15. The family story is that their uncle, Philip Bohan, paid for his nieces to emigrate from County Leitrim. In 1900, he is in PA where he is a priest (born 1873). The girls, in turn, each paid for the next sister to come over. (There were 8 that did.)

Are there any city directories for Ravenna circa 1893? Were there hotels, or perhaps a Catholic seminary, or anyone living there with the last name Kilkenny or Bohan?

Thanks for any insight.
Susan Daily
[Please note I do not subscribe to the email list. Please post replies here, or email direct. Thank you.]

Portage Co. bibles-moved from historical society to....???

I just had a chat with a lady at the Portage Co. Historical Society in an attempt to get records on my gr., gr., gr. grandfather, Azariah Ross, and his daughter's father in law, Jonathan Pearson. among the things we discussed was where Jonathan's bible had got to. she said that the bibles left over, Jonathan's being one of them, were removed from the Historical Society and moved at least 3 times, and she wasn't sure where they were. has anyone tracked these bibles? she says there were about 250 of them...it would be a great boon to researchers to find where these bibles are and to get them back to their families.
I'm in Oregon, so I am unable to do this myself, or I would...
also, she said some of those bibles were in bad shape, so they need to be saved as soon as possible.
I would assume they are still in Portage Co., but beyond that, I've no idea.

Death Certificates for Ohio from 1903-1953 are now available online at:

http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

You can see the actual death certificate and might be able to print it off, but some users are having problems with that function. There is a place to report problems so maybe the site needs some "tweaking" yet.

You will need to register your name and email address and wait for an email confirmation before you can use the site.

When you go to the site for the first time, if you don't have Adobe Flash Player on your computer, you will be prompted to download it. If you have a dial-up connection, be patient because everything will take a little longer to open. After you download Adobe Flash Player, you will be prompted to close your browser window to complete the download process. If you have AOL dial-up connection, you will need to sign offline completely and then sign on again.

Board Administrator
POW/MIA Korean War. Portage Co. DEAN

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Portage County, Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: ERCEL WAYNE DEAN
Born: October 8, 1931. Caucasian
Date of loss: November 28, 1950. POW

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. There are 158 families in Ohio that have not been located. There is one family from *** County that has not been located.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
Was it recently used as an antique store? Is it for sale?

Hello,

I have found two marriage records in Portage Co Ohio:

Thomas Lyman marr Cynthia Eggleston Sept 12 1820

Laura Lyman marr Zalmon Eggleston 1821

I am directly connected to Egglestons and from my research I know that Cynthia and Zalman are connected to me, although not directly. They are children of Oliver Eggleston and Cynthia Skinner of Portage Co Ohio.

Are Laura Lyman and Thomas Lyman brother and sister? Who were their parents?

As it happens, I have an old old photo of a Thomas Lyman, which came to me with a collection of Eggleston related photos. I don't know if this photo is of the same Thomas Lyman mentioned above.

If anyone has further information, please contact me.

Thanks,

Colleen Lill
I am searching for information on the John Carroll family. John was born abt. 1830 in Ireland and immigrated in 1848. He married Bridget Elizabeth Unknown. The couple had ten children. One of their sons, Henry M. b. 1871 married Jessie G. and had five children. Their son Henry Charles b. 16 March 1896 married Sylvia.

I have not been able to find any marriage records. This family was Catholic and probably burried at St. Mary's Cemetery. If anyone has a copy of the internments at St. Mary's could you please check and see if the family is listed there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Linda Thirion Gatewood

"History of Portage County, Ohio" published by Warner, Beers & Co., Chicago, 1885

CONSTANT CHAPMAN (deceased) was born in Westbrook, Conn., December 27, 1761; a son of Deacon Jedediah Chapman, Jr., and a descendant of Robert Chapman (of the seventh generation) who was son of Robert Chapman, Sr., born in 1616 and who came from Hull, England, to Boston, Mass., in 1635, settling in Saybrook, Conn., in November of the same year; and died October 10, 1687. Our subject, when sixteen years of age, chose the occupation of a sailor, and followed the seas up to the time he settled in Brimfield, in 1821, and for many years was a ship Captain; during the war of the Revolution and while in the marine service, he was taken prisoner by the French Government and his ship and cargo confiscated. He was taken to the Island of Guadaloupe and kept a prisoner over a year, when he was exchanged. The American Government afterward made the French pay for the loss of his vessel and cargo. He was married, January 27, 1785, to Jemima, daughter of Silas Kelsey, of Killingworth, Conn., by whom he had nine children: Lydia K. (deceased); Thurot F. (deceased); John K. (deceased); Anna F. (deceased); Chole P., wife of Henry Smith; Mary C. (deceased); Joseph G. (deceased); Jemima T., wife of Gardner Wing, and Henry C. (deceased). Mr. Chapman was the first Postmaster of Brimfield, and died here in 1847, aged eighty-six years.

Bunts, Bunch, Bunce, etc. in Ravenna and Brimfield twp.

Richard Bunts & Catherine LKU married in and moved from NY to Ohio before 1838; found in 1840 census. I have not found them in the 1850 census. By 1860 they were in Ravenna, and their son, Benjamin, b.~1832 NY, was in Brimfield twp.
It appears that Richard and Catherine died before the 1870 census. I have been unable to locate their burial place(s).
In 1854 Benjamin (mistranscribed as Buets in marriage index) had married Henrietta McManis (aka McManus). They had one known child, Ermina, who died before 1870. Henrietta is buried with others of the McManus family, but I have not located the burial place(s) for Ermina or Benjamin d.btwn summer 1870-summer 1880.
Harmon A. Bunts lived with his parents and also with his brother, in the summer of 1869. He enlisted in 1862, fought with the 7th OVI, then married Mary L. Heller, 1866 Summit Co., farmed nr. Kent 1870, then moved to Akron. See this branch at worldconnect tree perseverance.
Any information on Richard, Catherine, Benjamin, Henrietta, or Ermina would be appreciated.

Benjamin Wilcox 07 May 1789 to 12 Mar 1862

Wanted to share this. Let me know if you are researching this family.

The Clinton Republican, St Johns, Clinton County, Michigan. 21 Mar 1862, Page 3. Transcribed by Dorothea Williams on 23 Feb 2007

OBITUARY
DIED – At his residence in Duplain, on the 12th inst., of disease of the heart, BENJAMIN WILCOX, aged 72 years 10 months and 5 days.
The deceased was born in Oxford, New Haven Co., Connecticut, - emigrated to the then far west in 1817, and took up his residence in Rochester, N.Y., which was at that time a village of a few hundred inhabitants. Here he married Miss Anna Adams, April 11th, 1819, whose death he was called to mourn but three brief years afterward. He was married again, on Christmas day, 1822, to Miss Sophia Gustin, who survives him to mourn the loss of a kind protector, and affectionate husband. Mr. Wilcox remained in Rochester, until 1837, when he moved to Palmyra, Portage Co., Ohio, and from thence to Duplain, in this county in 1853.
For the last 35 years of his life he was a consistent and exemplary member of the M. E. Church. Unostentatious, and unobtrusive in his habits of life; never coveting positions of prominence among his fellow men, for any personal advantages which might accrue to himself; but was ever found discharging with a conscientious regard to usefulness, his varied duties as citizen, neighbor, husband, father, and the various official relations which he was called to occupy in the Church of his choice. He will be remembered by the business men and mechanics of Rochester, with whom he had business relations, as an energetic manufacturer, and considerate employer – by his former neighbors in Ohio and this State, as a genial and conciliatory friend, and by all who knew him as a good man.
PORTAGE COUNTY OBITUARIES online

Hi all,
Several thousand Portage county obituaries have been compiled and placed online by a generous donor. They are in the library of files at GenealogyBuff.com http://www.genealogybuff.com/library.htm
Just go to the Ohio page and scroll to Portage County. The obituaries can be keyword searched.

For a refresher, here’s what can be obtained from obituaries:

- middle names
- date of birth
- surviving family members
- place of death
- occupation
- military role
- place of burial/cremation
- cause of death
- funeral home

Many times we look for the obituary for the person of interest. However, search engines used by GenealogyBuff.com help to find names contained IN the obituary. You may find information about your person of interest in an obituary written for someone else. Obituaries are FULL of clues!

Hope this helps.
Bill
I am trying to locate descendents of the following individuals who were in Ravenna in the early 20th century. Edward Huffman (b. 1868) married Etta and adopted a girl named Audrey (b 1898). Audrey eventually married a Joseph Cole. Edward's second wife was Myrtle who had a daughter from a previous marriage Maye (b. 1909). Maye married Herbert Eidson (b. 1909). My 2xgreat grandfather Archibald David Frets was adopted and I believe that Edward Huffman was his biological brother. I am interested in corresponding with any of the family members to see what they might know.

First, thanks to bralph1 for posting the Peter King entry to this board in 1999, from "History of Portage County, Ohio". I just came upon that posting yesterday. That posting gave me a lot of information about that side of my family. I can't thank you enough for this.

Peter King's oldest daughter, Mary, married Patrick Carney in about 1859. Their youngest daughter, Helen Gertrude, was my grandmother. I request help to find Patrick and Mary's marriage date and Patrick's county of origin in Ireland.

Thanks for whatever help you may give me.

Edward F Murphy

DEAN, POW Korean War Portage County

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Portage County Ohio as his home of record.

Soldier: Ercel Wayne Dean
Born: October 9, 1931, Caucasian
Date of loss:Captured (POW) November 28, 1950 in North Korea. His remains were never recovered.

There is one family from Portage County that has not been located.

Story of Harry DeWitt Cline from Beacon Journal 1913:

EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY KILLS BABY
Shoots Little One With Gun Found in Play at Freedom Center.
Ravenna--A sickening accident resulting in the immediate death by Harry Cline, occurred at Freedom Center, Wednesday when the little one was shot by a neighbor child, Bennie Crew, aged eight Years.

The child that was killed was aged two years, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cline of Ravenna. Mrs. Cline was at the home of John Crew, and the children were playing in the yard with their mothers not far away. Bennie, the little Crew boy, had found his father's shotgun, and without realizing the awful possibilities in the weapon, pointed it at his little playmate, and pulled the trigger.

The Cline baby had just gone to his mother to show her a bunch of flowers, he had picked from the yard when the fatal charge was sent into his body, taking his life almost at the mother's feet.

The mothers became frantic instantly when they realized what had happened, and gave the alarm in hopes that something might be done to save the life of the child, but death had resulted almost instantly after the shooting.
(Little Harry died June 4, 1913)

Warner/Kerns marriage Portage 03 Jul 1857

I'm looking for the marriage of Margaret Kerns, (d/o George and Margaret ? Kerns) born 05 Oct 1831 Beaver Township, Mahoning County, Ohio and died 09 Aug 1878 Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan.

Her spouse, or so I've been led to believe, was named Warner but I have nothing at all on him.

There was a child named Jacob William Warner born 10 Jul 1861 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio.

I've been told that Margaret remarried. The new spouse was John H. Hurley (Harley) and they married sometime between 1862-1864 but definitely before 07 Feb 1866 when her son Frank A. Hurley was born in Coldwater, Branch County, MI.

I'm not certain but Kerns and Hurley/Harley may also have been married in Portage.

Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. I need to find out whether Jacob was a Warner or a Hurley.

Thanks in advance,
Chris (coloknight@verizon.net)
