for nearly 17 years I've been struggling trying to put three related Portage Co. pioneer families together, and I think I've finally made a little headway, but anyone who knows anything about these people, please let me know-post it here as I sometimes lose my email at this eddress.
Azariah ROSS was probably the first family member to arrive in Portage. he married Polly CHITTENDEN in Atwater in 1817. they removed to Randolph in 1823 and they had 7 children before Polly d. prior to 1850. Azariah is in the Atwater 1820 census, the Randolph 1830 & 1840 census, and the Guilford, Medina Ohio 1850 census. I believe I have 3 of his 7 children's names; Mary who married Ira BUNNELL, Azariah and L. Mariah aka Mariah. Azariah and Mariah were at Ira and Mary's home when they, Azariah and Mariah, died. who were Azariah and Polly's other children?
Azariah's brother William[?] was in Portage by 1836 when Cynthia ROSS was born-or was her father Azariah? all I have that confirms William's name is a note in my family papers which I cannot locate at the moment. Cynthia certainly fits into one of the missing children slots in Azariah's family, as Azariah's last child is born 1835-1840 and is female. for some reason Cynthia is in the WHITTLESEY residence in 1850 Randolph, a 15 year old, and Azariah is over in Medina Co. so some things still don't make sense. is Cynthia Azariah's daughter? is she an only child of William's and if so, why can't I find him in the 1850 census?
Jonathan Pearson arrived in Stark Co., OH in abt 1833, and resided there for some time before moving to his brother Ebenezer PEARSON's farm in Edinburgh, Portage, OH. Ebenezer married Nancy KEEN and from the 1840 Edinburgh census they had 4 children, yet the 1830 Edinburgh census has them without children! and there appears to be a lone daughter in the 1820 St. Clair, Allegheny, PA census for Ebenezer. so I have something of a puzzle with this family. Jonathan married Margaret YOUNG and they had at least 7 children, some of whom were Amanda, John Young, and Sarah. I have yet to find the other three, a baby died before 1840 and was buried on a PEARSON or YOUNG farm in Stark Co. OH. I am wondering if one of the other 3 is Ebenezer, whom I thought was Jonathan's brother Ebenezer's son.
so you can see I have some work left to do. if any of this sounds like part of your family, please post a note here for me.
thank you
