Seeking info on and fate of James L. Knight of Perry Twp., Pickaway Co. OH in 1830 (there is another James Knight also living in Perry Twp. in 1830, who was born 1770-1780 and may the the father).

James was born 1800-1810 and married Mary "Polly" Rowen in Pickaway Co. on 3-30-1824. She was the daughter of Alexander and Sarah (Grainger) Rowen.

By the time of the 1830 census, James and Polly Knight appear to have had one child - a daughter born circa 1825.

Any information on this family will be appreciated!

I am looking for information on my gggrandfather. His name is probably Manuel (or some variation of the spelling) based on death certificate information I have put together. He more than likely was born in Maryland (date unknown-but around 1800). He married Sarah Tower(s) (b. Jan 25, 1806 in Ohio). They had the following children:
Hessa (b. about 1826 in OH, d. Dec 8, 1851 in IN)
John (b. Apr 21, 1830 in OH, d. Mar 5, 1903 in KS; married Margaret Taylor)
William E. (b. Jun 9, 1832 in OH, d. Feb 20, 1907 in KS; married Mary Snyder or Snider)
Charles E. (b. about 1834 in OH, d. about Jul 1, 1895 in MO; married Emily Yancey)
Mary Elizabeth (b. Apr 12, 1837 in OH, d. May 16, 1921 in KS; married names: Forney, Palmer, and McNabb)
James Thomas (b. Jan 29 1842 in OH, d. Sep 9, 1914 in KS; married Laura Butler)
George Emery (b. Apr 8 1844 in OH, d. Jan 21, 1921 in KS; married Margaret Fryback)
(NOTE: All above Ohio births were from the Circleville area of Pickaway County)
I know that around 1846 the family moved to Randolph Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana and stayed there until late 1850's where they moved to Vermilion County, Illinois. William, Charles, James, and George were all in the Cilvil War for Illinois Infantry Regiments.

I have a lot of information on these people, but would like to get more information on Manuel and/or Sarah.

Searching for parent info on Mary Stein (maiden name may be Montgomery). I ran across an article in the Oct. 1929 Circleville, Ohio paper stating she was "called to Columbus, Ohio due to her brother's death - William Montgomery". William was my grandfather. The article listed my dad, a few of his brothers and a sister, along with my grandmother Irene. I know nothing about Mary. She may have been born about 1902 in Circleville, Ohio to Charles William Montgomery and Ella C. Howard (aka Carrie Ella Howard). By 1910 Charles and Ella were divorced. I'm trying to verify if Charles William and Ella C. are, indeed, her parents; who did she marry; and if she is deceased. If you know of this individual, please feel free to email me directly at Mim71747@aol.com. Thank you.

Mary

I was wondering if anyone there would be willing to do me a favor. My GGGreat Grandfather died and was buried in Pickaway CO., near Deer Creek. I found once on the internet where there was a Hanson Cemetary on a private farm. I do not know where this is exactly or if there is even a headstone. His name was Daniel Hanson. His son died and is suppose to be buried there alongside him as well. His name was John Hanson.

If anyone has any info on this or would be willing to look them up for me, I would be very aprreciative. I live in far Northern Wisconsin, so I really can not get down there. Any help would be great. I hope someone can help me.

Eric Hanson
St Germain, Wisconsin

Obituary of Ann Brunidge Famuelener

The following is a transcription of an old obituary that was found in an old book. It has no date & no name of the newspaper. This was scanned & sent to me & I have no other knowledge of this family.

In the death of Mrs. William Famuelener, which occurred Friday night at her home seven miles south of Knoxville, Knox County loses another old settler, and the ranks of the pioneers are growing less each year. The deceased came to Knox County from Ohio in 1854 and settled with her family in the old Famuelener homestead, where she died.
Mrs. Famuelener died that night at 12 o’clock, after an illness of only a few weeks. Stomach trouble was the cause of her death, and her advanced age allowed insufficient strength for a second attack of the disease. Ann Brunidge was born near Circleville, Ohio, October 1, 1825, and lived there until she grew to be a woman. In ’52 she was married to William Famuelener, and two years later moved to Illinois and Knox County.
She leaves a husband, four sons, two daughters and nine grandchildren. The sons, Chauncey, James and John, live near the old home and George is a resident of Abingdon. Of the two daughters, Martha Famuelener lives at home, and Mrs. Chester Graham lives near Cameron. The funeral was held at the house Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock, and the remains were buried in the cemetery a half mile south of the home. The services were in charge of Rev. Frank Smith, of __ingdon. (probably Abingdon).
The family moved from the Minisink area of New York to Pickaway County, Ohio after the 1810 census. Ziba drowned in the Scioto River in May 1815, leaving Margaret and 9 children. Margaret married Cornelius Von Wagoner in Pickaway County in 1824 and she died there in February 1846. Three of the children of Ziba and Margaret stayed in Pickaway County. Eve, who married Ebenezer Everts and died the same year as her mother; Zebedee who married Elizabeth Champ and died in 1889; and Jonathan who never married and died in 1835. The remaining children went to Indiana, Ilinois and Missouri.

I believe it was a George, his ill wife and they had among their kids my grandfather's beloved grandmother Amanda Peck. Any relatives out there?

Armentrout, and various spellings. Also Carr and Peck

I need help with the confusion of these two John W. Armentrouts.
The first John was born Jan. 14, 1820 in Virginia and d. May 1, 1897 in Pickaway County, Ohio. It is said that he is buried in Peck Cemetery. This cemetery is located about 4 miles South of Williamsport,
near the Ross County line.
This John W. Armentrout was married to Lucinda Michael? or Lucinda Peck? I found a marriage record for John W. Armentrout and Lucinda Michael. Was she a Michael or was she a Peck that married a Michael then married John W. Armentrout? John and Lucinda had many children , Henry, George, Margaret, Jane, John, William, and Elizabeth . There may be more but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. The second John W. Armentrout was born in 1826 Virginia. He was never married and had no children. He lived with Jacob and Amelia Carr Peck and was listed as a nephew. By 1880 he was still living with Jacob and Amelia Carr Peck and was 55 yrs old and was a Invalid. There were clearly 2 John W. Armentrouts in Pickaway County, Ohio both born in Virginia. The second John is 99.99% related to Jacob and Amelia Carr Peck.

My biggest question right now is. Is the John W. Armentrout buried in Peck Cemetery the first John born in 1820 or the second one that was born in 1826 Virginia. Does anyone have proof that the John Buried there is indeed John born in 1820.? Who were the parents of these two men. I need proof that John born 1820 was the son of David Armentrout and Barbara Layman/ Lemon

Hello - James Davis was born in VA probably about 1750. He married Comfort Littlejohn. Their son, James Davis was born abt. 1770 in VA and married Rachel Atchison in Clark County, Kentucky in 1797. They moved to Pickaway County and had children there between 1800-1814. Rachel died about 1814 and James moved on to Scot County, Illinois. Rachel and John Davis' daughter Edith, married Wm. Henry Brown and their daughter, Rachel, married John Arnold. The Browns/Arnolds, and other Davis' moved to Brown and Scot County Illinois around the 1830-1840s. Any connections / suggestions would be most appreciated -- Many Thanks!

Sue sug53@earthlink.net

Any chance there is someone who knows about the Webb and Justus families of Pickawaw Co. Ohio? I found a James Webb and Mira Justus marriage May 10, 1824 and wondered if there might be a connection to a James Webb in Indiana.
I am tracking a James Webb who came to Hamilton Co.
Conklin and High Street Cemeteries Photographed

Hello fellow researchers,

I have done some work in Pickaway county photographing whole cemeteries to place on my husband's website. The cemeteries I have photographed do not contain relatives of mine, so please do not ask me questions about the people, as I have not researched them. This link is simply to aid people who might have ancestors buried in the following cemeteries:

Conklin Cemetery
High Street Cemetery

To view these photographs (for free of course), visit http://www.ohioexploration.com
and then follow the cemeteries link. After clicking on the specific cemetery you're interested in, then you must click on the yellow link at the bottom of the paragraph, and that will take you to the complete listing (and corresponding photographs) of all those buried there.

Enjoy!
Jodie Robinson
I've been searching for death records on the above (my great, great grandparents) for a long, long time and haven't been able to find anything. Last known residence was Circleville, Ohio in 1900. 1880 census states Thomas and Kate were born in 1851, but the 1900 census states Thomas was born Dec. 1853 and Kate - June, 1853. I've searched and searched but they don't show up in any census after 1900 so I'm assuming they passed away before the 1910 census. I'm totally lost as to how to find these documents. If anyone on this Board has any suggestions as to what my next step should be, I'd really appreciate it. You can e-mail me at Mim71747@aol.com Thank you! Mary

I am looking for any information on a Lovey Condery in the 1850 census for Circleville, Pickaway County, Ohio. She is 62 from Delaware and living with a family of James Miles 38 from Pennsylvania. His wife Mary is also from Delaware which leads me to believe this would be Lovey's daughter. I don't think Mary's maiden name to be Condery though. I find in the 1860 Kansas Territory, Doniphan County, Iowa census a Lovisia Conder age 71 from Virginia living with her known son Elisha Bowen from Ohio. Assuming this correct Lovisia's husband (William Bowen) is known to have died in 1841 Ohio then she remarried shortly thereafter to an Unknown Condery/Conder in Ohio and he died before 1850. Thanks for any information that my prove or disprove this line of thinking.

Pat Bowen

FLORENCE CEMETERY GONE!!!!!

My sister said the old Florence Cemetary up from the Muhlenburg Cemetary Darbyville has been destroyed. Somebody went in there and threw all the gravestones down the hill. How can someone do that? I have relatives buried there. There are Civil War veterns in there. Elias Florence is there. Alot of History gone. That property belongs to ALOT of people. Just the Historcal value alone - the Historical Society and DAR should protect it. MAKES ME VERY UPSET! I also heard my grandparents, in the Muhlenburg Cemetary has a road running over their graves now. They paid for that land to be buried in! They should not be covered up. Is there someone out there to help those who cannot come out of the grave to help themselves? pieone@hotmail.com

Requesting cemetery lookups (already searched other online sources), as well as any other records readily available, for Circleville, Pickaway Co., OH, c. 1830s, following individuals:

John PARK/PARKE/PARKS, d. 8 Sep 1831. Approx age at death: 79-80.
seeking headstone, any details on birthplace, date, mil. service, family members. Obit or will would be ideal :)
Appears to have moved from Virginia to Ohio after 1827.

Anna Maria "Mary" PARK
d. 1 Nov 1831 or 1836, approx age at death: 70-71
Maiden name could be Vance or variants of the following: Millslagle/Millslagel/Milchladle/Millshingle/Muehlschlaegel
(lots of conflicting reports about this woman's identity, but she was aforesaid John Park's wife, so any data to help clear up her identity is helpful).

Abraham PARK/PARKS
d. 1 Jan 1878, approx age at death: 86.
Son of aforementioned John Park and Mary whateverherMNwas :)
He might be listed as Abraham Park Sr., to distinguish from his son, Abraham T. Park.

Martha (Thompson) PARK
d. 3 Oct 1866, approx age at death: 67.
Wife of above mentioned Abraham Park.

Abraham appears to have moved to Circleville sometime *after* 1860 and before his wife's death in 1866. All their children were born in Iowa prior to this move.

Since both Abraham Sr. and his father moved to Circleville area in their old age, and Abraham moved after all his children were grown and left home, I suspect they had other family connections in the town or area.

Any research assistance would be gratefully received.

On 18 Apr 1837 Daniel D. Pontius m Elizabeth Ann Bentley. They are listed on the 1850 census in Circleville:
Pontious Daniel D. 39 cabinet maker PA
Elizabeth 35 VA
Charles 11 OH
Amanda 7 OH
John H. 5 OH
Lyman C. 3/12 OH

By 1860 Daniel has moved to Columbus. However, his wife is listed as Emily A. The children are the same except Lyman is not there and there are two additions:
Roalthal [becomes Rosa later] age 7 and Fannie age 2.

I'd appreciate knowing if Elizabeth Ann [Bentley]and Lyman died in Pickaway before they moved to Columbus; and if Daniel D. remarried in Pickaway. It's possible that the name listed in 1860 is an error.

From Columbus, he has moved on to Logan Co., OH by 1870, then the entire family disappears. I'd appreciate any help anyone has to offer on this family.

LouAnn in NC

Pedrick lookup request

I am trying to confirm the relationships between Samuel Pedrick (dates unknown) and Thomas (1790 - 1859) and Levi Pedrick (1792 - 1854).

It is our suspicion that Thomas and Levi Pedrick were brothers, and that their father was Samuel Pedrick. However, we have not been able to prove it. Both Thomas and Levi moved (we believe with Samuel) from the same town in New Jersey to the Circleville area at approximately the same time.

Levi Pedrick married Eleanor Keffer on March 6, 1822 in Pickaway, OH.
Thomas Pedrick married Mary Keffer (we believe Eleanor's sister) on December 8, 1825 in Pickaway, OH.

I know the marriage records are available in "Marriage Records for Pickaway County 1810-1862" by Dan Hearl (which I have not personally seen), but I was hoping the actual marriage certificates might list both sets of parents' names, which would confirm the connection.

If that is indeed the case, how does one get photocopies?

Thanks for all your help! -- DP

Dennis Pedrick
spikepirate(at)yahoo(dot)com
Cliftons In Pickaway Co OH 1800-1850. Job, Charles, John, Benjamin, Margaret, Juda

This Clifton family was in Pickaway Co OH for at least 50 years. I am hoping someone may have information about them. I believe Margaret is the mother of these Cliftons. They were all born in Delaware where there is a will of Obediah Smith stating his daughter, Margaret Clifton's children.

Listed in the will are: Job,Benjamin,Charles,John,Judah, and Smith Clifton. Is this the Pickaway Co family? There is a Margaret Clifton age 100 in Pickaway Co OH. Who was her husband? Job Clifton married Ann VanBuskirk and Juda Clifton married John VanBuskirk, both in Ross Co before Pickaway was formed.

There must be some records for these folks as they lived there for so long. Perhaps cemetery records would tell some of the relationships. Any clues or help will be greatly appreciated.

Are there any records of bound children in Pickaway Co, and who they were bound out to?
We think Hiram's father may have been a Noah Stotler. His mother was Ellen Farner (Farnum, etc.) Ellen & youngest son, Noah (b. ca 1843) lived with Henry Simmons & wife Kesiah, in 1850 census. We can't find Hiram on that census- is he listed under the name of the family he was bound out to?

I am trying to find an obituary for Isaac Straight who died on February 14, 1906. At the time of his death he was a resident of Circleville, Ohio (although he died in Athens State Hospital in Athens, Ohio).

Unfortunately, the Pickaway County District Public Library will not do email genealogical lookup requests in their microfilm archives for the Circleville Herald.

If anyone will be at the Pickaway County District Public Library and would have to time to search for the obituary I would greatly appreciate it.

David Robertson
Flint, MI

I want to follow up on a Gabriel Franklin Hargo, b. ca 1843, who later attended the University of Michigan, where he received a law degree in 1869.

Seeking information on Francis Marion COLLINS

I'm trying to find more information on FRancis Marion Collins, born circa 1854-5, who is listed as the biological father of my grandfather, Arthur Chester ZANE, born in 1885. His legal father was Elias Zane, who married Suzannah Miller in Terre Haute, Indiana in Sept 1874. But Suzannah...well, she played around. She had four sons by four different fathers (married to two of them). Arthur's birth certificate shows his surname as Zane, meaning Suzannah and Elias were married at that time, but Collins is listed as the father. I suspect she knew Collins even before Arthur's birth; he had an older half brother named Francis Marion Zane, born in 1876. Any help is appreciated.

He may have served in the Civil War as there is a William Fisher listed on the 1890 Vet's census in Pickaway which might be him.

Thanks in advance.
Pamela G. Was it named after an Imler?

I am curious because my ggg grandmother Deborah Grim is buried there, but her husband, Jacob, was buried in Tarlton, so I thought that perhaps she was originally an Imler or one of her daughters married an Imler. A long shot, yes, but just thought I'd learn a bit of history in case it helped.

Thanks for any responses!
Linda Thomas

I do not know the name(s) of these original immigrants or even the port where they entered.

Any information on these early Gillilands from Pickaway would be most appreciated.

(orphaned?) Deyo children in Darby Twp. 1850

Seeking information about the six DEYO children listed with other families in the 1850 Federal Census of Darby Township, Pickaway County, Ohio.

In order of age:
Edson DEYO, age 17, living with Jeremiah DEYO and Hannah (ALKIRE) DEYO and four of their children.
Robert DEYO, age 16, living with Nancy KEYS and her children.
Harriet DEYO, age 15, living with Jeremiah DEYO and Hannah (ALKIRE) DEYO and four of their children.
Leonard DEYO, age 14, living with Caleb and Sidney BURNS and their eight children.
Martha A. DEYO, age 13, living with Maria MCMULLEN and her children.
Joseph DEYO, age 7, living with Samuel LOWE.

All were born in Ohio according to the census, and all but Robert were living within a few houses of each other. I suspect that these children were perhaps orphaned between 1843 and 1850, and sent out to live with nearby neighbors, but have no proof. If you have any information about parents with the surname of DEYO passing away between 1843 and 1850, or any information about any of these children or families, please contact me.
Lisa
